The Bryant Buzz Student Generated Newsletter VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 DECEMBER 2015 4324 Third Street * Riverside, CA 92501 * 951-788-7453 A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL ~ Dr. Lari Nelson T here is always something special about this time of year. There is a spirit in the air. Regardless of one’s religious affiliation and the commercialism in the stores, a spirit of joy and sharing always seems to prevail during the holiday season. The holiday season provides a rich opportunity for sensory experiences—the taste of traditional dishes; the smell of spices used in cookies, pies, and other goodies the sight of beautiful lights, candles, and cards; the sound of being close to loved ones and appreciating our heritage. As the year draws to an end, many of us are fortunate to receive extra time off. The best thing to spend on your children is time. The pleasure of monetary gifts fade over time, unlike the time and love we give each day. Take this opportunity to see and experience the holidays through the eyes of a child and… Hear the joy in their laughter, See the love in their eyes, Feel the hope in their touch, Let us all see as a child sees… The Joy The Hope The Wonder The Love Then every day will be Peace on Earth. MEET THE NEWSPAPER STAFF by Adrian Rodriguez, 6th Grader B ryant School’s Superheroes are helping make the world a better place by writing and publishing a school newspaper - The Bryant Buzz. In this newspaper you will read about the newest BUZZ around Bryant Elementary. The latest announcements and reminders will be there, too. The 6th graders who used their super brains to create the newspaper are Aryana Klawitter, Emily Harralson, Adrian Rodriguez, Laurisa Lohmann-Neal, and Fiona Dunlap. They came up with this great idea when they were pretending they were news reporters. One of them said, “Hey, what if we started a school newspaper for Bryant?” They asked Dr. Nelson and she said that they could. That’s how The Bryant Buzz came to be. You might be wondering: How does this help make our school a better place? Well, The Bryant Buzz can help by keeping kids like you informed about upcoming events, days off school, and other important topics. A big thanks to Dr. Nelson for allowing us to make The Bryant Buzz possible. We hope that you enjoy reading our newspaper. Have a good month and Season’s Greetings! Roberts was the mother of Duane Roberts, owner of the Historic Mission Inn and also a food company and real estate businessman, and philanthropist. He reported, “I started the Mary S. Roberts Foundation in her honor to support animals and children, among others.” Bryant has been the fortunate recipient of generous charity from this foundation. One of the first things that the foundation decided to do was adopt a local school in the area. Bryant was selected! Every year, the Mary S. Roberts Foundation pays for our entire school (students and staff) to attend the movies before Winter Break! Not only do they pay for buses and movie tickets, by also for popcorn and snacks— because what is a movie without popcorn! The Mary S. Roberts foundation also sponsor’s our 6th graders on their postpromotion tour and lunch at the Mission Inn. Mary S. Roberts’ name is probably best known in relation to the Pet Adoption Center named in her honor and is located in Riverside at 6165 Industrial St. The Mary S. Roberts Pet Adoption Center is a public benefit charitable organization committed to giving homeless cats and dogs another chance for a healthy and happy life by finding them good, loving homes. Thank you to the Mary S. Roberts Foundation for their example of charity and heroic actions to make this part of the world a better place! Materials needed: · Paper plate · Construction paper (various colors)· Pencil· Scissors· Glue · Markers · Glitter, ribbons, and other decorative materials · Large- and medium-sized bowls or pots (to trace your wreath)· Yarn or string What to do: 1. Make the form for your wreath by tracing a small bowl or lid in the center of a paper plate. Carefully cut out the smaller circle. 2. Color or paint a background on the wreath. 3. Using the scissors, poke a small hole in the top of the wreath. Thread several inches of the string or yarn through the hole and tie the ends in a knot. This is the "hanger." 4. Trace your child's hand on a sheet of construction paper and carefully cut along the lines you drew. Repeat this step, alternating paper colors if you choose, until you have traced enough hands to cover the wreath. 5. Talk with your child about the different ways he/she can help others, and what helping and friendship means. 6. Help him/her write the qualities on each hand. He/She could also color a picture. For example, if being helpful means picking up litter, picture of putting trash into a can could be drawn. 7. When each hand has been filled with words and pictures expressing the characteristics of a good friend, think about how to arrange the hands on the wreath so they slightly overlap but the writing and artwork remain visible. 8. Now you'll begin to glue the hands on the wreath. Put a few drops of glue on the back of a hand and press it into place on the wreath. Repeat this step for each helping hand you've made (make sure one hand covers the hole at the top). 9. Let the glue dry. Now add any final decorative touches you'd like, such as ribbons, bows, or glitter. 10. Let the wreath dry and hang it as a reminder of the importance of friendship and kindness.
