Editorial by Marc Bati
ARE FESTIVALS IN CRISIS ?
Drops in budget, reductions in subsidies, the specific status
under question... at a time where all is seen through an
economic filter, can culture still be seen as something other
than a commodity?
We are living in a period of cultural goods and the economy
of culture, where cultural strategy is discussed with marketing
tools. Producers invest in bankable artists who promise highly
profitable blockbusters.
However, alongside this "mainstream" culture there is a real
explosion of innovative experimentation.
Internet offers an immediate daily selection of artistic possibilities, both highly original
and disconnected from the notion of an economic model, allowing for absolute
sincerity and spontaneity.
How can we best support this emerging talent?
Maybe that’s where festivals come in: as a relay or echobox to give visibility to the
not yet visible.
So, crisis or no crisis, there will always be a place for art as a vector for discovery as
long as there is an audience curious for non-formatted artistic production and greedy
for audaciousness.
And that means you!

Editorial: Prefect Parisot de Bayard for Travelling34
The 3rd edition of Travelling34 is a community event of world
importance.
In our lives we all discover the importance of human diversity.
Through a group of moving and dynamic short films, this
totally original festival reinforces the importance of living
together not despite but with disability.
The festival reminds us that humanity has always questioned
the notion of difference and that the debate becomes richer
with the humour and poetry of young film-makers.
The meeting between men, women and film will carry the audience deeply into the
question of feeling happy to be alive.
I am truly happy to be godfather of the 2014 edition.
Jean-Christophe PARISOT DE BAYARD –Prefect on a public service mission and
godfather of Travelling34 2014

The Festival in 10 points
1.
The festival, in reference to the « haïku » films, very short 3 minute films
(except name and credits).
2.
A worldwide, simultaneous, multilingual cultural event, a bridge between
cultures, with screening organised simultaneously in 108 cities
in 29 countries.
3.
An original concept: films screened for audiences in each city, with
«the single public prize without borders». Prize given by number of votes
of Festival-goers.
4.
Competitions open to all: hardened professionals and promising
enthusiasts send their films to compete in the different selections:
a launchpad for tomorrow s talent.
5.
Liberty and equality in very short and thus very cheap format adapted to
multiple
media
(mobile,
TV,
cinema,
web…).
Whatever the genre (fiction, animation, documentary etc. ).
6.
An International competition with prizegiving in Paris on May 2nd 2014,
and a jury of professionals (44 films in competition presented in 2 parts).
7.

May 2nd 2014 in Montpellier.
8.
Womens Words competition with prizegiving in Montpellier on May 3rd
2014, with the support of the Ministry for Women s Rights:

« Special animation », « they dared ! » and other « local » selections,
organised by cities to showcase their regional talent.

10. Local cohesion around an international project: each city personalises and
creates its festival, with screenings programmed during the 10 days of the
festival, from May 2nd to 11th 2014 and chooses both the programme and
extra animation.
11. The principle and news 2014
The festival screens a selection of Very Short films from around the world.
Each film must be under 3 minutes (except name and credits).
This is the only rule. All genres are accepted: micro fiction, short
documentary, animation, synthesized images etc.…Be they beginners or
professionals the film-makers come from all horizons and continents.

A worldwide festival!
44 films of under 3 minutes in competition, during 10 days, in over 100 cities
throughout the world: enjoy all of this and more at the 16th edition of the Very
Short International Film Festival, open to all, from May 2nd to 11th 2014,
simultaneously in France and the rest of the world. Audiences from across the
planet are asked to vote together for the Public Prize without borders.
The international diffusion of the festival lends it a quite new genre. The same
programmes in competition are screened simultaneously throughout the world.
Planned for international organisation, the Very Shorts International Film Festival
builds real bridges between different cultures. The international selection pursues
worldwide development and will be present this year for the first time in Australia,
Estonia, The USA, Greece, Ireland, Niger, and the Ukraine.

OBJECTIVES
To make the Very Shorts International Film Festival available throughout
the world.
The Very Shorts international network is growing continuously with many new cities.
Development in the Southern countries is also one of our priorities and Niger has
just joined the network.
In order to achieve this, it is important to:
Develop partnerships with business sponsors ready to invest in the project.
Encourage Northern cities to support the project via twinships with developing
countries.
Create a vector for international diffusion of audio-visual creation.
Designed to be organised around the globe, the Very Shorts International Film
Festival gives yearly international diffusion to a format of audio-visual creation,
which is both concise and synthetic as well as intercultural in order to be
understood on each continent.
Increase the visibility of short films
With a network of over 8000 film-makers of all nationalities and a wide variety
of films in the catalogue, the goal is to increase diffusion of the Very Shorts in
France and the rest of the world.
By encouraging TV channels to broadcast the films at peak periods, which is
possible thanks to the light and flexible cinematographic format. The Shorts are
wonderful signs of what is happening in the world and can be widely broadcast
via our media partner s sites Arte Creative, Canal+, France Culture, Rue 89.
By encouraging distributors to include Shorts in feature film DVD s or even to
screen them before films at the cinema. Once again the size and vast choice of
topics plays in favour of Shorts.
Local cohesion in an international project
Local selections « Around the
» give each participating city the
possibility to customize the Festival during the same 10 day period by
choosing the programme and extra animation.
An international event with so much more to offer! Each city may give its own
local edge to this international project with its own set of economic,
social and cultural players.

Travelling34 and jury - Montpellier
The Travelling34 selection was lauched in
Montpellier, in 2012, by Katia Martin-Maresco,
Philippe Caza and Tristan Incorvaia.
For the first time thanks to the support of AG2R –
La Mondiale, « Travelling34 » has its competition.
Since it was launched, this selection on all forms
of disability has been a growing success. The original idea behind this came from
the realisation that there are very few places for disabled persons in cinemas.
Of these short films which are both moving and dynamic, Prefect Parisot says
« the festival is totally original and centers on the greatness of living together not
despite but with disability grandeur», with the support of 3 world
handisport champions and jury members, (Marie-Amélie Lefur, Orianne Lopez,
Delphine Le Sausse) .
15 Very Shorts will be shown for the first competition (projection 45 minutes)
Screening Friday May 2nd 2014 at 8pm at Gaumont Multiplexe Montpellier
Screening Sunday May 4th 2014 at 4.30pm at the Forum des Images, Paris
