Nominations are arriving for the
2106 Awards Dinner at Tranquil
Park on Saturday 23rd April, so we’ll
feature your outstanding nominees
and clubs each week.
With so many clubs in the district,
it’s hoped that many will vie for the
Organisation of the Year Award.
Last Year, Lions Club of Maleny/
Blackall Range took home the
honours. Other awards you can
nominate for are:
Club Administrator/Volunteer of
the Year
Sportsperson of the Year

With nominations closing in just
10 days (Friday 25th March) don’t
forget to get yours in! This week,
we feature an entry in the Junior
Sportsperson of the Year
Award.
Daniel Gilliland
Daniel is nominated by
Maleny Junior Rugby
Union Club.
Daniel started playing
for Maleny Junior Rugby
Union at the age of 11,
playing in the under 12
team.
With Daniel’s hard work
and dedication to the
game he has played in
representative teams in
the lead up to probably
his best year yet which
was 2015.
In 2015 Daniel was
Daniel Gilliland
chosen as the best and
Daniel is nominated by Maleny Junior Rug- fairest player in a combined Maleny/Caloundra
by Union Club.
team playing in the Sunshine Coast
Under 15 competition.
Daniel was also selected in the Sunshine Coast Schoolboy’s under 15
representative team, chosen from
schools from Glasshouse Mountains
to Gympie.
He was also selected for Sunshine
Coast Under 15 in a national competition run by Australia Rugby
Union. The players in this competition are identified as the country’s
emerging players and chosen by
selectors from the Australian Rugby
Union.
With Daniel wanting to pursue his
rugby career further, he applied for
a rugby union scholarship at the
prestigious Brisbane Boys College.
When Daniel applied he was told
applications were closed - but then
later received a call for an interview.
From that interview, he now has a
rugby union scholarship at Brisbane
Boys College.
Keep a look out for Daniel Gilliland
playing more representative rugby
union for many more years yet.

Maleny Results
Not many games to report on this week but the
resurfacing work to our lawns is almost at an end.
In a much rain interrupted handicap game on Sunday afternoon, Robert Elliott 17 defeated Donna
Manning and Vince Carbery 13. Robert played well using his bisques
(the name given to extra turns in a handicap game).
Many of our players are well into their preparations for the Sunshine
Coast pennant season, which commences in a little over two weeks.
We will be fielding teams in both the Bray and the Lochwood Shields.
Did you know that the games of Golf and Croquet have a common
ancestor in the Roman game of PAGANICA. During the 17th century in
town areas where community space was limited PAGANICA morphed
into a game called Pall Mall. In 1870 Pll Mall was introduced to Wimbledon with the formation of the All England Croquet and Tennis Club
which survives until thid day as Wimbeldon Tennis.
The Range Croquet Club welcomes new players at any time, with coaching and mallets available for beginners. Contact Vince Carbery (5494
2193) or Priscilla Vickers (5494 3555).
The Range Croquet Club home ground is in the Maleny Show-grounds
in Stanley River Road, Maleny.

Witta Wompoos came in as victors
in a closely fought match against
Ballinger Park at Buderim on the
weekend. Sets were tied up until
the ladies doubles with Annette
and Paula holding their opponents
out to hit the lead. With sets
even again leading into the final
two mixed matches our couples
combinations managed to get us
over the line with Paula and Jim
coming in victorious and Ernie and
Annette narrowly going down in a
tie breaker. Final results had the

Council Elections
Don’t forget that Saturday March
19th is the council elections and
voting by eligible people is compulsory.
Don’t forget to vote as it is only
once every four years you get to
have your say on council!
Witta Wagtails did well today
against Maleny Racqueteer’s, what
with rain early on this morning
we thank Gerry, Christine, Jill and
Elaine for putting up a good fight
even though we didn’t come home
with the win.
Wallabies had a close match on
Thursday night against L’s Belles winning in a 3rd set tie break.
The Whistlers played at Maroochydore. It was hot and we had lots of
long games, great pickups in long
rallies. Very tight but we ran out
of energy at the end. Score was 2836 games, 3-5 sets. Team was Liz
Mellish, Brenda Warner, Aki Lepper
and Donna Kuskopf.
The Wildcats are doing their best
but things just aren’t working out
for the team just yet. Pauline,
Annie, Libby and Jenie are giving it
their all but just can’t make it across
the line. But the win is coming!
The Witta Tennis Club home courts
are situated at the Witta Recreation
Club grounds on Witta Road, Witta.

Maleny Superintendent collects Top Achievement Award
The Maleny Golf Course officially
opened stage one of their proposed18-hole community golf
course at a special ceremony on
Tuesday 30 June, 2015.
The first Plans to build the golf
course date back to 2001 and those
plans actually accellerated in 2004.
with actual construction commencing in 2014.
Passion, dedication and hard work
have paid off for Maleny Golf Club’s
course superintendent Mick McCombe in the form of a prestigious
achievement award at the Queensland Golf Industry Awards held at
Jupiter’s on the Gold Coast on 10
March.
Mick was one of five finalists in the
running for the 2015 Living Turf
Superintendent’s Achievement
Award following his nomination
by Maleny Golf Club’s President Dr
Max Whitten.
Dr Whitten said the nomination
recognised Mick’s insight in interpreting the design by golf architect
Graham Papworth, diverse operating skills and ability to manage and
motivate volunteers who helped
build and then maintain the ninehole course. “
of volunteers who’ve enabled us
to achieve such a high standard of
presentation,” he said. “ This award
is owed to the long term vision of
the club and it’s board of directors
and with the second 9 holes of the
course due to open in the not too
distant future, I am very privileged
to be working at such a great progressive facility.”
Mick McCombe has played a pivotal
role in translating a weed-ridden,
largely abandoned dairy farm into
an operating golf course which
is now receiving high praise from
both members and visitors alike,”
Dr Whitten said. “When Mick
came on board he worked closely
with the design and construction
team under the leadership of
Club Vice-President and engineer
Rod Richards to tweak the bulk
earthworks to ensure
the tees, fairways and
greens reflected Graham
Papworth’s vision and
the outcome speaks for
itself.”
Dr Whitten said Mick’s prowess as
an A-grade golfer and ability to
operate dry-hired earthmoving machinery had proved to be valuable
attributes. “ Above all his personal
capacity to work with and motivate
volunteers and contractors has
played a huge part in constructing
a good golf course in a short time
frame and with a modest budget,”
he said.
Prior to taking on the role of Course
Superintendent at Maleny Mick was
the Course Foreman at Headland
Golf Club, Buderim, and during a
15-year industry career gained international experience at Coombe
Hill Golf Club in London.
On accepting the award
Mick acknowledged the
unqualified support he
had received from Dr
Whitten and Maleny Golf
Club Greens Director
Rob Bailo since taking on
the daunting challenge
in September 2014.
Mick said he was now looking forward to starting construction of the
second nine holes at Maleny.
Photo Above : Living Turf Queensland’s David
Morrison presents the award to Mick McCombe
“I would not have been
able to build the course
the way we have without their full backing
and of course I want to
thank our fantastic team
