PAGE 2 KAPPA GAMMA PI NEWS JULY 2013 Two Texas Kappas Are 2013 Cornaro Scholars The Cornaro Scholarship Committee announced the winners of the 2013 Cornaro Scholarship for Graduate Studies at the National Convention Banquet in Toledo on June 22. The prestigious Cornaro Scholarship—open only to Kappa members—may be used for expenses at a graduate or professional school. Mollimichelle Cabeldue lives in San Antonio, Texas. She was nominated to Kappa Gamma Pi by the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) in San Antonio, Texas, in 2013. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and criminal justice as a double major with a 3.99 overall GPA. She will begin the Master's Program in Clinical Psychology at Sam Houston State University this fall. Mollimichelle noted in her Cornaro application that her volunteer work has inspired a passion for further community service. “As a psychology major interested in working in a clinical setting, I wanted to gain experience in the field while also giving back. . . . I became a volunteer at the San Antonio State Hospital (SASH) working with mentally-ill patients. I have also coordinated events that bring students from the UIW Honors Program to SASH in hopes of encouraging interaction between the two groups. The activities helped break down stereotypes about the mentally ill; several students went back to become regular volunteers.” About her future career goals, Mollimichelle wrote, “After graduating with a Master’s degree in clinical psychology, I hope to work as a therapist in a correctional facility. Most people are shocked to hear I want to work with such potentially dangerous or unpredictable individuals. I, on the other hand, look forward to working with individuals that society has given up on. It is these individuals that I believe I can best serve.” KAPPA GAMMA PI NEWS Published five times yearly in February, April, July, September/October and November by Kappa Gamma Pi, 3479 Glen Allen Dr., Cleveland Heights, OH 44121. POSTMASTER: Send address changes to Kappa Gamma Pi 7250 Overcliff Road, Cincinnati, OH 45233 Nicole Driscoll is a resident of Cibolo, Texas. She was nominated to Kappa Gamma Pi by St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas, in 2013. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in social work and religious and theological studies as a double major with a 4.0 overall GPA. She will begin the Masters Program in Divinity at the University of Notre Dame this fall. Nicole’s resumé of volunteer service is extensive and features a variety of internships and service projects, including work with St. Edward’s Campus Ministry, the Travis Heights Elementary HOTS reading program, the Austin Pregnancy Resource Center and Mary House Catholic Worker through the SERVE Austin program, and two Service Break Experiences, visiting the White Mountain Apache tribe in Whiteriver, Arizona, and the L’Arche community in Montreal, Canada. “After earning a Master of Divinity, I hope to continue serving my community by pursuing peace and justicerelated ministry, for I believe that part of my vocation lies in helping to bring about a more just world,” Nicole wrote in her Cornaro application. “Professionally, I hope to work at a Catholic faith-based non-profit organization such as Catholic Relief Services or Catholic Charities. I hope to engage in both direct service and work on the legislative and administrative level to help meet people’s basic needs, alleviate human suffering and ensure that the dignity and worth of all persons is recognized both in the United States and abroad.” The Cornaro Corner This year, the Cornaro Scholarship Committee was pleased to award $5,000 scholarships to two Kappas from two different Texas affiliates. I am very grateful to the members who served as judges for the Cornaro Scholarship Committee: Recording Secretary Kate Coulihan Ficke (Dominican, IL, ’75), Anne Simon (D’Youville, NY, ’94), Thomas Withgott (Ohio Dominican, OH, ’96) and Michael Bossetta, Sr. (Our Lady of Holy Cross, LA, ’05). Congratulations to our newest Cornaro Scholars! And thank you to all the Kappas who contribute to the Cornaro Scholarship Fund. Jamie Asher (Our Lady of Holy Cross, LA, ’05) II VP, Cornaro Scholarship Committee Chair 2008 Cornaro Scholar JULY 2013 KAPPA GAMMA PI NEWS From the National President Dear Kappas, Thank you, Toledo! My first order of business as your incoming National President is to extend sincere thanks to the Toledo Chapter for hosting the 2013 National Convention at Lourdes University in Sylvania, Ohio. The chapter, led by Arlene Ford-Bond and Kristin Baldeschwiler, provided an outstanding program and generous hospitality to visiting Kappas from around the country. The Kappa Sharing session, led by Chicago Kappa Beth Piper, challenged us to work together in groups to spark conversations that help us to remain “Committed to Our Call” – the call to ongoing service. Our pledge to ongoing service When inducted to Kappa Gamma Pi, we pledged ourselves to ongoing service. Individually and collectively, we serve our communities, colleges, churches and each other. In the April issue of the NEWS, the accomplishments of some of our members who responded to the Kappa Service Challenge were published. I hope that their activities inspire you in your efforts to serve others and I invite you to share information about your volunteer projects. New KGP website Work on the new Kappa website is nearing completion. Because KGP is a special organization and we need a lot of functionality that will give our members and affiliates certain capabilities—while easily integrating with our existing membership database—the process of developing this site has been very complex. Our tentative launch date is September 1, 2013. We know you’ll be pleased when it all goes live. I look forward to serving as your National President and I encourage you to contact me with any ideas you might have to advance the mission of Kappa and bring our organization to new heights. Kelly Haden Our Lady of Holy Cross College, New Orleans, LA, ’98 Kappa Gamma Pi National President July 2013 kgpkelly@yahoo.com 604 Carnation Ave., Metairie, LA 70001 PAGE 3 Kappa Service Spotlight Editor's note: As space allows, the NEWS will feature service projects by Kappas and chapters. A Kappa who lives outside Nashville, Tennessee, emailed this story about her volunteer service project which, although not directly related to the Kappa national service projects of alleviating hunger, increasing literacy and caring for the environment, does, as she noted, “make a positive impact on the poor and marginalized in our society.” “My husband of almost 35 years, Kent Fourman, and I started a ministry called AFFIRM, which is an acronym for “A Friends and Family of Inmates Resource Ministry.” We provide hospitality to visitors to our county jail on almost every Saturday we are in town. We have been doing this for 6-1/2 years, and I personally put in at least 220 hours per year volunteering. “The families of inmates are often hurting worse than the prisoners themselves. They are stuck with bills, kids, anger, frustration, mental anguish and the stigma of having an incarcerated loved one. Many of them come from long distances, only to find that their inmate is on lock-down. “Before we came, there was very limited seating in a packed waiting area. There was nothing for anyone to do during long waits. We give away snacks, candy, water, sodas, magazines and Bibles. We put out coloring books, crayons, paper and stickers for the children. We donated and installed a baby-changing station. We also set up chairs and provide information about social services, since most of the families are in need of some kind of assistance. Most importantly, we give visitors a listening and understanding ear, since we had a son in jail 10 years ago, and can commiserate with them. “The jail is an equal-opportunity place, and we have met a wide spectrum of people. Some of the stories are awe-inspiring, like the man who came to visit and forgive someone involved in the death of his son. Many are heart-breaking. “Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share this. It would be nice to see this in every jail! We wish we could do more, but sometimes, it’s enough.” Peace, Cathy Libert Fourman (Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, IN, ’77), Brentwood, TN PAGE 4 KAPPA GAMMA PI NEWS JULY 2013 At the fabulous Toledo Museum of Art (L-R): Patricia Kubistal, Bill Waitinas, Pamela Wright Waitinas, Anne Dunlap-Kahren, Connie DeMaeyer, Sister Barbara Vano, OSF, Joanne Rouzan Driscoll, Peggy Finnigan-Jessup, Janine Rouzan Piechowski, Patricia Matonak, Kristin Baldeschwiler, Bonnie Gentilia, Iris Smalenberg and Kate Coulihan Ficke Convention Presenter Sister A Note from Kappa's Chaplain Shannon Schrein, Thank you for the very warm and colorful invitaOSF, PhD; Toledo tion! I regret that I will not be able to be present at Chapter President Arlene Ford-Bond the convention. It is very difficult for me to travel and KGP National at this point in my life because of a fall over a year Past President ago! My superior encourages me to “pray for all Pat Baumgarten who are inviting me” and refrain from traveling! ... I do wish all the Kappas the very best as they gather and you may tell them that I will be offering three Masses—one each day of the convention—that is on June 21, 22 and 23 for their intentions. That will be just three days before my anniversary of profession of vows as a monk 56 years ago. On May 25 I celebrated 50 years as a priest—the “Golden Jubilee” they call it! It is interesting as I reflect how life changes as one ages! (Rev.) David Turner, O.S.B., Ph.D., D.Min. (Prin.) Benedictine University, Lisle, Illinois Convention News from Page 1 Secretary for two consecutive years; specify that those serving on Standing Committees be current dues paying members; add College Relations and Development to the list of Standing Committees and clarify that the National President will appoint the Chair of the College Relations Committee and the Treasurer will serve as Chair of the Development Committee. One proposal to allow colleges that were originally Catholic institutions but no longer regard themselves as Catholic to establish affiliation with Kappa with the approval of the National Office was referred to an ad hoc committee for further study. Three National Board recommendations were presented, discussed and adopted: • The September/October issue of the NEWS will be mailed to those members who were nominated or have paid dues at some point during the last 10 years. Prior to this convention, the cut-off period for Toledo Convention Planning Committee members, clockwise from top: Arlene Ford-Bond, Kristin Baldeschwiler, Debra Olejownik and Mary Anne Kubat Some photos by Teresa Bosh and Juanita Sattler. those receiving the September/October issue was 25 years. This recommendation was made as part of an ongoing effort to reduce costs because of the decline in dues renewal by members. • The National Board will review the job duties of its members and the organizational structure as a whole to determine whether the current structure meets the needs of Kappa Gamma Pi as it exists today to help us move forward. The Board will make recommendations at the next convention, if deemed necessary. • Because attendance has been on a steady decline in recent years, the location, cost and focus/theme of conventions will be reviewed by the Board. Further details are in the meeting minutes. To request a copy of the minutes or the current Constitution, please contact the National Office. Delegates reviewed the report of the National Treasurer (see page 7) and approved the budget for 2013-2015. (L-R): Kelly Haden, Teresa Bosh, Susan Lackey, Jamie Asher, Chad Skinner, Peggy Finnigan-Jessup, Judy Gelwicks, Connie DeMaeyer, Anne Dunlap-Kahren, Pat Baumgarten and Kate Coulihan Ficke Faith and Service Award recipient Sister Virginia Welsh, OSF, and new KGP National President Kelly Haden Faith and Service from Page 1 specific guidelines, Sister Virginia, a former teacher, determined to emphasize education and literacy. “Whatever you want to change in the world, you’ve got to start with the kids,” she has said. She firmly believes that it is important to have “some place where people can go that offers engagement in terms of empowering them to do their best.” All of the Padua Center programs seek to recognize and instill the seven principles of Kwanzaa: unity, selfdetermination, collective work, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith. In addition to offering summer camps and a special program for girls, one unique program is Padua Possibilities, an alternative to suspension for students from four central city schools. Three of these schools received an “F” in state evaluations. Children suspended from school are brought to the Padua Center to do homework, to discuss behavior modifications with a social worker and to participate in sessions called Peace Education. The success of the program is attributed to Sister Virginia, whose hard work and determination have won the respect and cooperation of the Kwanzaa Park community. Described by one co-worker as “slight in stature and size . . . big in respect in the inner city community,” Sister Virginia has been recognized as a person who gets things done. Last October when the “Nuns on the Bus” drove through Ohio as part of their trek through nine states to lobby for special welfare issues, the bus stopped at Padua Center to call awareness to Sister Virginia’s programs. Teresa Bosh and Beth Sebesta Piper Convention Resolutions • Be it resolved that Kappa Gamma Pi extends appreciation and gratitude to the Toledo Convention Committee for an inspiring conference, enlightening speakers and generous hospitality. • Be it resolved that Kappa Gamma Pi encourages all in attendance and all with us in spirit to become “Committed to Our Call.” • Be it resolved that Kappa Gamma Pi urges all to learn from the Faith, Education and Service speakers and put these lessons into practice. • Be it resolved that Kappa Gamma Pi calls upon our members to “Expand Our Horizons.” • Be it resolved that Kappa Gamma Pi Board members begin to implement some of the inspirational ideas offered during Kappa Sharing time. • Be it resolved that Kappa Gamma Pi stresses the importance of volunteering at worthwhile projects such as the Padua Center. • Be it resolved that Kappa Gamma Pi sincerely thanks the outgoing Second VP for her years of service on the Board. • Be it resolved that Kappa Gamma Pi welcomes new Board members and looks forward to benefiting from their talents and expertise.
