City of Fredericksburg Virginia Economic Development and Tourism Y AUGUST 2015 Eileen’s Bakery, Sprelly take top honors at Sandwich Invitational ummm…a sandwich crafted with tempura artichoke hearts with roasted garlic goat cheese spread, asparagus, icebox cucumbers and toasted almonds on a croissant. These were the winning entries in the second-annual Sandwich Invitational, a tasty event held in Hurkamp Park for 300 lucky ticket-holders kicking off the summer downtown Restaurant Week earlier this month. Twelve Fredericksburg chefs participated in the event, coordinated by Fredericksburg VA Main Street Inc. with assistance from Fredericksburg’s Department of Economic Development and Tourism. Eileen’s Bakery & Café garnered the Sandwich King, 1st place and $750 with its croissant sandwich. Sprelly won the “People’s Choice,” 2nd place award and $500 for its crepe. In further judge’s awards, last year’s champion Foode took 3rd place this year for its oven-roasted pork loin sandwich with smoked Duke’s mayo, Monterey Jack cheese and peach relish on pumpernickel bread. Spencer Devon Brewing won 4th place. It was served with pickled red cabbage on onion ciabatta bread. The three celebrity judges were Elaine ChonBaker, a Washington, D.C., restaurant investor; Dee Daniels, a B101.5 radio personality and Stacy Cogswell, a contestant on television’s “Top Chef: Boston” competition. Other participants included Sunken Well Tavern, J. Brian’s Tap Room, Mason–Dixon Café, Paul’s Bakery, Kenmore Inn, Capital Ale House, Cork and Table and Deutschland Downtown.
