Culture of the Cherokee
L
ocated in their traditional homelands of Western North Carolina, the Eastern Band of
Cherokee is the only federally recognized tribe in the state. Consisting of more than
14,000 members, the tribe holds around 56,000 acres in their Qualla Boundary. The
Cherokee operate as a sovereign nation, one that continues to provide for the
prosperity of tribal members.
Amid their rich traditions and landscape, the Cherokee offer visitors numerous attractions.
OCONALUFTEE INDIAN VILLAGE
Further into the thick forest behind the museum, the Oconaluftee Indian Village is an interactive, living
community showcasing Cherokee life and tradition during the mid to late 1700s. Visitors are able to spend
the day with Cherokee tribal members, learning and experiencing the culture through reenactments,
hands-on classes, demonstrations, plays, lectures, dance and concessions. Among the recreated buildings
are an authentic council house, sweat lodge and ceremonial grounds. Visitors can also watch as villagers
hull canoes, make pottery, weave baskets and bead work.

QUALLA ARTS AND
CRAFTS MUTUAL
Formed in 1946, the Qualla Arts &
Crafts Mutual is the nation’s oldest arts and
crafts cooperative. Containing a variety of
treasures made from the hands of
Cherokee artisan members, visitors come
across the inspiring creativity of the tribe,
which includes paintings, wood and stone
sculptures, beadwork, pottery and baskets
using traditional and contemporary
techniques. With a lush selection of these
handmade items and yearly craft show, the
gallery attracts art collectors from around
the world in search of authentic pieces.
MUSEUM OF THE
CHEROKEE INDIAN
With an array of detailed exhibits, the
Museum of the Cherokee Indian is a
comprehensive collection of artifacts and
lifelike recreations of everyday tribal life
and historical events. Their 11,000-year
story is recreated with computer-generated
imagery and special effects, while there is
an onsite wing dedicated to the education
and research departments. As you
immerse yourself in the history of the
people, you’ll learn about hunting devices,
agricultural practices, medical approaches,
the language system and leisure activities.
Once you finish the tour, be sure to stroll
through the museum store, which features
authentic Cherokee keepsakes ranging
from baskets to clothing, jewelry to pottery
and much more.
“UNTO THESE HILLS”
One of the longest-running outdoor
dramas in the United States, “Unto These
Hills” educates and entertains families with
the riveting history of Cherokee heroism
over the past several hundred years. The
performance encompasses the height of
the tribe’s power, as well as the tragedy of
the Trail of Tears and onward to modernday realities. The renowned drama takes
places in the Mountainside Theatre, an
open-air stage set against the steep,
mystical Great Smoky Mountains.

Finding fun
on a budget
L
ooking to get the biggest bang for your
buck? Cherokee is packed with a
plethora of free or inexpensive
activities that leave you and your family rich
with memories.
GET OUTSIDE
The great outdoors are yours for the taking
with endless opportunities for family bonding —
from splashing in a stream, taking a hike, having a
picnic or going on a photo safari — and won’t cost
a penny. Kids can even earn their Junior Ranger
badge in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park
by completing activities, including free programs
led by park rangers.
SPLASH TIME
Leave the rest of the world behind when you
venture over the footbridge to Oconaluftee Islands
Park, a magical beach along the Oconaluftee River.
Younger ones can wade in the crystal clear, ankledeep water along the shore and play with the
smooth, water-worn pebbles, while bigger kids can
spend hours floating down the stream in inner
tubes. This large public park has picnic areas,
walking trails and a mystical grove of giant bamboo.
Make sure to hit the jumping fountains and
natural water park downtown, another winner in
the free department. Kids love dodging the flying
sprays of water and scrambling over the rocks in a
flowing, man-made creek.
EXPLORE CHEROKEE
It’s amazing how far $10 can go in Cherokee’s
shopping district. While you browse for Indian art
or jewelry, a handful of pocket change will keep
the kids busy hunting for their own trinkets and
souvenirs.
Kids are naturally fascinated by Native
American culture. Take a trip back in time to see
what Cherokee life was like from re-enactors at the
Oconaluftee Indian Village, or delve deeper at the
first-class Museum of the Cherokee Indian.
Cherokee storytellers will capture the family’s
imagination with a free community bonfire
weekend evenings at Oconaluftee Islands Park.

Camping
with style
More than a dozen campgrounds are sprinkled throughout Cherokee. Providing a friendly,
embracing ambiance, you’ll find everything from quiet family spots to RV hookups, around the
corner from the casino or deep into the picturesque woods of the Great Smokies.
Campgrounds offer plenty of options for activities. Besides tubing, putt-putt, volleyball,
game rooms, heated pools and playgrounds for the children, visitors also have access to laundry
facilities, bathhouses with hot showers and camp supply stores. If fishing is your thing, some
locations provide you with a free pole, bait and someone to clean any trout you catch in one of
the stocked ponds.
If a tent doesn’t strike your fancy, there are numerous cabin rentals available, with cozy buildings ready to fit the needs of any size family. Once you’re settled in, you can take an easy stroll
to the casino or to downtown with plenty of shopping, restaurants and cultural attractions.
Every campground is ready and willing to help you with any questions you may have about
where to go and what to do while you’re in Cherokee. Feel free to call in advance for ideas,
suggestions and recommendations that’ll make your camping experience a memorable one.
AMUSEMENT PARKS
There are few places in America where vintage
theme parks like Santa’s Land still exist in all their
glory. Rides are unlimited for the ticket price, as well
as a small zoo, magic show and lots more. The
grounds are tucked beneath a canopy of shady
trees that keep it cool in the summer. Ideal for
younger kids, but there’s plenty to hold the interest
of older siblings, too, like the famous Rudicoaster
and a nice-sized Ferris Wheel. 828.497.9191.
Cherokee Fun Park is an exciting entertainment
zone with a large arcade, a large pool for bumper
boats, 18-hole mini golf and a fast-paced go kart
track that twists and loops with under- and overpasses. 828.497.5877.
SKATE PARK
Both skateboarders and mountain bikers will
love flying down ramps, sliding on rails, jumping
steps, swooping around curves or going for the
gold on a half-pipe bowl. This brand-new, state-ofthe-art skate park dishes up an awesome street
course along with stand-alone flow bowls. And did
we mention it’s free?
BEAR HUNT
This bear scavenger hunt is one the whole
family will love. Beautifully detailed bears handpainted by tribal artists are on display throughout
Cherokee. The larger-than-life bears depict vibrant
murals, from a tribute to veterans to Cherokee
mythology to the natural beauty of the Smokies. A
photo safari to find all the bears is a wonderful —
and free — family activity while exploring Cherokee.
FESTIVALS AND EVENTS
Cherokee is home to dozens of festivals, powwows, art shows and other events every year. For a

Cherokee Smokies:
by foot
W
ith some of the highest peaks east of
the Rockies, Cherokee is a hiker’s
paradise. If you want to tackle a 6,000foot mountain or just go for a leisurely stroll, you
can choose between a day hike with the family on
the outskirts of downtown or a multi-day
backpacking jaunt into the depths of the Great
Smokies. The region lays claim to more than
3,000 miles of trails, which lead you to
innumerable vistas and awe-inspiring waterfalls.
Information and recommendation can be
found from one of the many helpful people at the
Cherokee Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center.

Cherokee Smokies: by horseback
It’s time to get out of the car and see firsthand the vast grandeur of the Great Smokies. And what
better way to do just that than with a horseback ride? Wading through streams and down lush trails,
you’ll scratch that adventure itch atop the saddle. Riders of all ages and experience can each find a trip
to suit their needs, with wagon rides also available for small children.

This road has it all.
Enough turns to impress a rider looking for
adventure combined with stops along a mountain
stream and a climb up to Newfound Gap at 5,000 feet
make it a must-do.
The roundtrip from Cherokee to Newfound Gap
takes about an hour without breaks but this is one ride
where you’re bound to pull off and enjoy the fresh,
mountain air.
Make sure to take in a side trip to Clingmans Dome,
the highest point in the Smokies offering panoramic
views.
BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY
Heavy metal
thunder
T
he crossroads of the Great
Smoky Mountains National Park
and the Blue Ridge Parkway,
Cherokee is the launching pad for some
of the most revered and exhilarating
motorcycle rides in the world. Whether
you’re cruising a mountain ridge 6,000
feet high or shooting alongside a swiftmoving river, the hairpin curves and
roadside attractions captivate riders.
Automobile enthusiasts will feel the
cool Appalachian breeze in their hair
throwing their sports car or convertible
into gear up a steep incline or down
into a deep, wooded valley. The road to
fun and fast-moving freedom is truly at
your doorstep in Cherokee.
America’s favorite road starts in Cherokee and
climbs up to the ridge tops where it offers a striking view
of the valleys below. From there, it’s all up to you.
Within minutes from town you’ll find high mountain
vistas, wildflowers in the season, picnic spots at
overlooks and easy but exciting riding through sweeping
curves and tunnels. Have your camera ready to capture
postcard perfect memories.
TAIL OF THE DRAGON
A motorcycle trip to the Cherokee Smokies wouldn’t
be complete without a run down the world famous U.S.
129. With 318 curves in 11 miles, this is serious riding.
Take it slow and easy or crank the throttle for a little
excitement.
The road rumbles through the mountains a couple
ranges west of Cherokee, but even the ride to get to the
Dragon is worth the excursion. Along the way you’ll see
Fontana Lake and catch stunning views on the climb over
Stecoah Gap.
Cherokee Smokies:
by water
With countless lakes, rivers, creeks and
waterfalls, the Great Smokies is dripping with
secret spots and popular destinations to cool
off on those hot summer days. Water
enthusiasts flock to the region to participate
or watch some of the world-class events held
on the Nantahala River.
Float through the afternoon on a pontoon
boat, shoot the rapids on a whitewater raft
trip, leisurely kayak along a river or simply just
jump right in and soak your soul in the
tranquil waters.
TUBING
Wile away a summer day floating down the
Oconaluftee River in an inner tube, a sure-fire
crowd pleaser for the whole family. Grab your
sunscreen, towels and provisions and stake out a
spot on the shore at Oconaluftee Islands Park,
accessible by footbridge in downtown Cherokee.
Grandpa can read and snooze, mom can sunbathe
and kids can float and splash to their delight. The
best news: it costs just a few dollars to rent an
inner tube for the whole day.
RAFTING
The Nantahala River takes the prize as the
most popular and sought-after river for guided trips,
offering just enough whitewater excitement but still
suitable for beginners. For a more relaxed float trip
or families with small children, check in with
outfitters on the Tuckasegee. Or for a more
adrenaline-pumping ride and experienced rafters
check out the Cheoah.
KAYAKING/CANOEING
If you’re packing a paddle this vacation, the
rivers around Cherokee won’t disappoint. For
beginners, several outfitters lead kayak or canoe
trips and a few will rent boats on the region’s
gentler rivers or lakes. The World Freestyle Kayaking
Championships is coming to the Nantahala River in
September 2013.

hether you’re looking to
bomb down a dirt-devil
single-track or take a
leisurely ride with the family down a
kid-friendly path, Cherokee is at the
heart of some of the most accessible
and enjoyable mountain biking trails.
A three-mile roundtrip, the
Oconaluftee River Trail maneuvers
beside a river bank within the Great
Smoky Mountains National Park,
ultimately spilling out into downtown
Cherokee, where post-ride treats and
attractions await.
More experienced riders make
their way further out to the Tsali
Recreation Area, a popular spot with
endless trails that spider web deep
into the woods.
For road bikers, the Blue Ridge
Parkway is continually referred to as
one of one of the finest routes for
riders looking for the ultimate blend
of scenery and technical challenges.
If you’re looking for a place where
bicyclists are not only welcomed with
open arms, but also encouraged to
explore and challenge each other, look
no further than the dirt and pavement
paths to discovery in Cherokee.
Casting the line of passion
Emerging as a top national destination for the finest in fly-fishing, Cherokee has long
been lauded for its prized trout streams.
Because of their highly-sought after trout, the region has been the location of the U.S.
National Fly-fishing Competition and continues to host many tournaments throughout the
year, many of which with a robust prize purse.
With over 400,000 trout raised from eggs and released into tribal waters by Cherokee
Fish and Game, these cherished fish regularly reach two pounds, with plenty pushing the
envelope at four pounds and two feet long.
The area provides many trusted guide services, which can take you out for an afternoon
on a drift boat or multi-day backcountry trip. There are plenty of great locations for
beginners and children, which are also handicap accessible. No experience is needed to
catch the perfect day of fly-fishing in the magical waters of Cherokee.

Harrah’s Cherokee on a roll
I
t was a big year for
Harrah’s Cherokee
Casino and Hotel.
The casino was given permission by state leaders to
finally bring in dealers for its
table games, which meant
500 new jobs and lots more
gaming opportunities for
customers. With real dealers,
the casino opened more
blackjack tables and was able
to start offering new poker
games along with roulette.
The casino also put the
finishing touches on a $633 million expansion and remodeling project, which included
twin 68-foot waterfalls that cascade into a
collection pool in the new rotunda. Also new
are a third hotel tower, a suite of new restaurants, bars and lounges and more gaming
space have been added to the complex.
The goal of the expansion is to transform
the successful casino into a destination vacation spot that offers all the amenities found
in more traditional gaming areas like Las

Vegas and Atlantic City.
N.C. Gov. Beverly Perdue visited the
casino in late 2012 as the first dealers started work, praising the tribe and Principal
Chief Michell Hicks for the casino’s continued success.
"It's been a long journey, and I guess I
have been waiting for this day to take a deep
breath," Hicks said. "I am very proud."
The tribe had been previously restricted
to electronic and video-based gambling.
W
hether you’re craving a fresh Italian meal
or southern cooking, Asian dishes or
cosmopolitan items, Harrah’s Cherokee
Casino specializes in serving up some of the finest
culinary selections around.
The casino is lined with an array of choices, which
include Paula Deen’s Kitchen, Chef’s Stage buffet,
BRIO Tuscan Grille, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, an
Asian noodle bar and food court with favorites like
Dunkin’ Donuts and Uno’s Pizza. Despite children
not being allowed on the gaming floor, most
establishments are easily accessible for families.
Always expanding and diversifying, Harrah’s has
emerged as a renowned destination resort nestled
cozily in the high peaks and deep valleys of the
Great Smokies. Visitors can browse trendy boutiques
and shops, attend big-name concerts, stay in luxury
hotel rooms, relax in dance clubs and lounges or go
for a dip in the state-of-the-art indoor pool with
sweeping views of the mountains.
So, kick back and let the world come to you, at Harrah’s –
where family, food and fashion are just part of the fun.
