Welcome Words – FECAVA President
WELCOME WORDS – FECAVA PRESIDENT
FECAVA Eurocongress - what is so special about this veterinary event? In my experience, it is the time and place where veterinary science, politics, business and pleasure
meet. Every year, I am excited to participate and I have never been disappointed. All
European flavours, cultures and variations meet under the same roof and create a
unique opportunity to learn from one another and have fun.
Science - the selection of the best speakers and update subjects offer 3 days with 144
hours of lectures divided into 8 parallel sessions. The organizing committee has invited
specialists who will provide up to date knowledge and entertaining presentations.
Policy-making is based on the annual feedback collected from all 40 FECAVA member
associations and happens not only during the Council meeting on Saturday, but also during working group discussions. The FECAVA Symposium this year is focused on Animal
Welfare – a very important and interesting subject.
The Exhibition time at the Congress is a great opportunity to find the newest medical
and professional proposals to run our business and treat our patients. Undoubtedly the
industry will prepare a myriad of attractive offers.
The social part will be held in the amazing Hofburg Palace. Meeting friends and networking with people worth knowing will be a great opportunity after education and business.
On top of all that, Vienna is a wonderful destination for experiencing music, history, politics, culture, famous attractions and food.
Optimists should take their sunglasses, pessimists their umbrellas but hopefully everybody will be equipped with good humour and a positive attitude.
I am delighted to thank the organizers, participants and supporters and welcome you all
to the 22nd FECAVA Eurocongress in Vienna.
Jerzy Gawor
DVM PhD President of FECAVA

WELCOME WORDS – ORGANIZING COMMITTEE
Welcome to Vienna!
The “Vereinigung Österreichischer Kleintiermediziner” is delighted to welcome you to
the 22nd FECAVA Eurocongress and the 31st annual meeting of VÖK in Vienna from the
22nd to 25th of June 2016.
It is a great pleasure and honour to welcome veterinarians, delegates and friends from
Europe and all other parts of the world in the capital of Austria, in Vienna. The board
of the VÖK organized a meeting with an excellent international scientific program, full
of interesting topics in a lecture site which is unique in the world – The Hofburg Vienna.
Besides attending an excellent conference, there will also be time for friendship, meeting
colleagues and exchanging experiences, maybe during a leisurely walk through the
historical city centre, a visit to one of our numerous museums, an evening spent at
the world-famous State Opera or a dinner at a “Heurigen”, our typical Viennese wine
taverns. You will have a lot of opportunities to enjoy the beautiful sides of life, in a city
with an imperial past.
Imperial Vienna has left its marks not only in Viennese cuisine, but also in the ambience
of numerous restaurants, museums, exhibitions and much, much more that existed already during the time of the emperors!
It is a great pleasure to welcome you to our beautiful city in the heart of Europe.
Dr. Manfred Hochleithner

Cardiology Workshop in Canine & Feline Electrocardiography
Sabine Riesen, Bern/CH
John Bonagura, Columbus/US
Goals: This workshop considers: 1) Technical aspects of recording the electrocardiogram (EKG,
ECG) using standard equipment and the newer hand-held devices; 2) Interactive interpretation of
canine and feline electrocardiograms within a clinical context; and 3) Therapeutic and management
approaches for heart rhythm disturbances in small animal practice.
Description: The workshop begins with a short review of clinically-relevant electrocardiographic
theory and the normal EKG waveforms in dogs and cats. An approach to EKG analysis is then
presented. Following this is a practical demonstration of recording techniques using conventional
electrocardiographic equipment, a commonly used European ECG telemetry recording device,
and one of the popular hand-held devices designed for the mobile telephone. The majority of the
workshop involves electrocardiographic interpretation using case vignettes and ECG unknowns.
The participants will be divided into small “working groups” to analyse a set of EKGs that will be
reviewed with the instructors. Both common and challenging rhythm diagnoses will be considered
along with management approaches. Participants will receive a workbook with electrocardiograms
as well as reference notes for future use.
09:00 – 13:00 Veterinary University of Vienna
My dog is lame: Is this orthopaedic or neurologic?
Eva Schnabl-Feichter, Vienna/AT
B. Duncan X. Lascelles, Chapel Hill/US
This is going to be a very interactive seminar. Participants will follow different lameness/paresis
cases and shall discuss diagnostic possibilities, diseases and treatment modalities together with
the specialists. During this seminar participants will see some typical scenarios of neurologic vs
orthopedic conditions which they might also see during their daily consultations.

Practical Information Vienna
PRACTICAL INFORMATION VIENNA
Whether this is your first visit to Vienna or you have been here before – this city always
finds ways to surprise and delight you. Just take in its atmosphere, which is rich in history and tradition, yet also fresh and upbeat.
The city center is a small universe in itself: discover historical palaces face to face with
modern facades, elegant boutiques next to popular fashion stores, and antique shops
lining up across from stylish designer hotspots.
Art permeates Vienna’s very essence – get a feel of it during a city walking tour, or
while visiting one of Vienna’s many museums. Must-sees include the Kunsthistorisches
Museum, Albertina and the museums located in the trendy Museumsquartier (MQ).
Sights not to be missed are St. Stephen’s Cathedral right in the heart of the city, Schönbrunn palace, and the Giant Ferris Wheel at the “Prater” fairground.
Fans of classical music and opera lovers may jump at a chance to spend an evening
at the Staatsoper or the Musikverein. More modern fare can be found at Vienna‘s jazz
bars, world music pubs and dance clubs.
When it comes to food, you should definitely try famous Austrian dishes such as “Wiener Schnitzel” (breaded escalope of veal) or “Tafelspitz” (prime boiled beef). Your stay
isn‘t complete without treating yourself to coffee and a slice of cake at one of Vienna’s
many coffeehouses, or tasting some organic ice cream.
Some of the endless possibilities available to you in Vienna:
—— Find out if the Danube really is blue
—— Feel like a Royal on a “Fiaker” carriage tour
—— Taste your way through the wide range of Viennese pastries
—— Test your nerves at one of the Prater’s many attractions
Registration &
Congress Information
Some of the few things you can‘t do in Vienna (but there really only are a few):
—— Go deep-sea diving
—— Get an appointment at Sigmund Freud‘s (at least not anymore)
—— Get seriously bored

Fortekor® PLUS 1,25 mg / 2,5 mg, Fortekor® PLUS 5 mg / 10 mg, Tabletten für Hunde Pharmakotherapeutische Gruppe: ACE-Hemmer, Kombinationen. Zusammensetzung: Eine Tablette Fortekor® PLUS 1,25 mg / 2,5 mg enthält: 1,25 mg Pimobendan, 2,5 mg
Benazeprilhydrochlorid, 0,5 mg Eisen-III-oxid.
