CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE:
Some of us will be heading off to the Natal Classic as I write this – good luck and let’s bring the
trophies back to the club. Kevin Robertson will not be riding due to a recent operation – we wish
you a speedy recovery Kevin.
For those of you who knew him, Ex Zimbabwean Ian Hesketh died on the 30th of April in England.
Ian had come to South Africa from England to ride the JD on his old AJS, but fell ill, was
hospitalized in Johannesburg, then returned to England where his condition worsened. He was so
looking forward to riding the JD on his old bike but it was not to be.
I also regret to advise that Dennis Mamet passed away on Saturday the 4 th of May.
The Sunday run a couple of weeks ago was a great success and fairly well attended considering it
was on Mother’s Day – let’s make every effort to ride on these runs – they are great for the spirit
and for comradery!
We now have a new digital projector for use by the club as well as a sound system, so if you have
any DVD’s you think would be appreciated at club night please let me know and we can schedule
a viewing.

Club Night 24 March 2013:
The cool of autumn was definitely evident for the April meeting and all were delighted to see Gavin
Walton had made the trip again. He was certainly in better shape than last month and our
thoughts are with him all the time for a speedy recovery. An apology was received from both Les
Sim and Roly Tilman.
The meeting opened with the usual announcements and was informed that the DJ DVD was
making good progress. It is eagerly awaited. The Century Run had been a great success and
results were in Kickstart. For his hard work and good organization thereof Motorcyclist of the
Month was awarded to Rob Pattison-Emms.
Unfortunately the guest speaker from Shield Products did not appear and members had more time
to chat and catch up on each other’s news. The bike on display was an OK Supreme now owned
by Pierre Rousseau and Ric Lewis gave an amusing account of some of the “beast’s “history
when it was owned by Jules Civin.
The bike had started many DJs and even had ten finishes to its credit in its previous life. Pierre
acquired it from Jack Lewthwaite last year and it underwent a complete rebuild with input by
Hamish Morrison, Doug McLaren and its enthusiastic owner and had a rather tight finish to be
ready for the JD this year.
To the great delight of all concerned it finished well and has proven to be a very nice performer
since the latest rebuild. The meeting was amused to hear that despite the lack of any petrol to test
the “first start” after assembly this was never the less achieved by using ether! The bike obliged by
starting and later the young son of a prospective member was unable to conceal his joy when he
too successfully started the machine. In the picture are the current owner Pierre Rousseau and
the former owner Jules Civin
The usual raffle did the rounds and Dick Maizey was among the winners.
The meeting then adjourned and the next one will be on the 27th May at the VVC Clubhouse.
The headcount was forty eight.

Odds and Ends:
The change over to the delivery of Kickstart via e-mail is progressing well, and there have been
several positive comments. The form of attachment to the mail is causing problems for some
people and we are working on this. Remember that Kickstart is loaded to the VMC website the
day before the meeting, so it is always possible to access it via the website. Print copies will still
be made available for those without access to the internet.
The previously published Dam Buster classic adventure tour took place on the 1 st of May and was
a great success – see write up on this event later on.. (Did anyone see the remarkable footage of
a Lancaster doing a run over a lake in England to commemorate the 70 th anniversary of the actual
Dam Buster Raid?? Truly stunning footage!)
By the time this issue is published the Natal Classic will be a thing of the past. Results will appear
in next month’s issue and congratulations and well done to all those who participated and those
that were placed...
Again I urge all of you to please take advantage of Kickstart in its on line form. You will be able to
publish photos of bikes you may have for sale, or items for that matter. Photos always enhance
the ad and make it a lot easier for a potential buyer to make a decision and an offer. Send your

Frik Kraamwinkel - Projekbestuurder: Cars in the Park 2013 has advised on behalf of the POMC
that they would like to display a number of old motorcycles (built before 1945) in the special invite
area. The event is on the 4th of August. Exhibitors will have access to the hospitality area for
coffee/tea and snacks. A cash bar will also be available without a queue. Please be there around

ZCGF511BB5V002322, Engine Number F5A402266, was STOLEN under the Old Oak bridge on the N1
going in the direction of Paarl on 13 April 2013 between the hours of 21h40 and 11h45. I experienced a
mechanical breakdown and had to fetch a bike trailer to take the motorcycle home.
This is an exceptionally scarce motor cycle and believed to be the only one in South Africa with the silver
and blue combination. SAPS Case number CAS 551/4/2013 has been opened and details of the vehicle
have already been circulated to all police stations countrywide”.

The Sunday Run:
Just had to mention this – the first Sunday run of 2013 ably organized by Ian Holmes. It was great, a little
chilly, but good roads and a great venue. We left the Total garage on Witkoppen/Malibongwe at 0815 on
the 12th, and headed for the Melon Rouge eatery in Magaliesberg. A total of 10 bikes of all descriptions.
The ride was good, the food was excellent (as was the Jeripigo) and a good time was had by all. Those

A "brand new" 1975 Norton Commando Interstate still in its crate is one of 11 found recently in Belgium. Here's
something you don't come across every day: 11 brand new 1975 electric-start Norton Interstate motorcycles, still in
the crate and awaiting final assembly!
The horde of Norton’s came to light recently following the death of the owner of Motoshop Podevyn in Aalst , Belgium.
Incredibly, the bikes are just a small part of an even larger collection
It seems that the owner of Motoshop Podevyn had quite a reputation for collecting bikes and parts, but he also
collected quite a reputation for being difficult to deal with, many former customers saying he rarely let go of parts or
complete bikes from the huge collection he amassed over the years.
In addition to the 11 Nortons there's also an ex-Peter Williams Norton-powered space frame racer, a Rotax-powered
1989 Matchless G80 still in its crate, numerous standard and customised Norton’s, a Triumph T160, Bonneville’s,
piles and piles of wheels and seats, and racks of used and new-old-stock gas tanks.

(Whilst not strictly a motorcycling event there was one BMW – and there should have been more bikes. This article
has been slightly edited for space reasons – Ed).
Winter greeting to you all and thank you for supporting us on The Dam Busters Run.
I think the Highveld winter is ideal for Classic Car and Bike Motoring. Crisp morning air, comfortable
midday temperatures, blue skies and no torrential downpours, so keep the wheels turning.
Speaking of The Dam Busters, held on 1st May, it had the aforementioned Highveld winter weather. A
glorious day for a fun run and picnic.

We had 51 entrants, 13 of which were Sunbeam Club Members. No all in Roots cars, but nonetheless a
good turnout. Thank you members. Also to our new member Hennie Coetzee and his Wife – thank you too
for coming all the way from Komatipoort.
An eclectic mix of varied and interesting cars, plus a BMW Bike, (pity we didn’t have any more as we would
have modified our scoring system on the basis a bike only has “one pair of eyes” to picking up the clues),
MG, Ferraris, Jaguars, Bentley, Rolls, Talbots, Morris Minors, Morgan’s, Triumphs, a rare Colt 1100, a
stately Wolesley, 110 Studebaker, Cobra, Volksie and a Porsche 356 special.
We enjoyed excellent support from several Clubs, Piston Ring, VVC, VMC, Triumph, Morgan. We had over
100 people at the Arrows Rest Restaurant Prize Giving where we were thanked and complimented for our
efforts.
It appeared that people enjoyed the relaxed fun run/picnic style event which still retains and element of
competiveness, via the route – Quiz Format – plus an extra string to the bow with our Robin Hood Contest
at the end. Fortunatly no drivers shot their navigators. All good stuff.
There were also half a dozen VMC Members who gave their wives and families in their motor cars.
In future, we intend to modify the event to be more adaptable to motorcyclists, as it is a fun event with an
element of competitiveness without the normal regularity route schedules, therefore making it an altogether
more casual and relaxed atmosphere.
So, we hope that we can encourage you fine fellows to bring out your bikes for Next Year’s Dam Busters
which will have a new “Dam” Route.

Well not quite all - two of our participants had an unfortunate collision with damage to their cars, but
fortunately only minor injuries to:- venerable Sunbeam Members, Eric and Dawn McQuillian, in their Alpine
and Tony Watson in his AC Cobra.
This does bring to mind the importance of being affiliated to the SAVVA Body, as we are, whose Rules and
Regulations, governing Club activities, should be adhered to, in organized events like “The Dam Busters”,
require a SAVVA Clearance Certificate and Signed Indemnity documents from the participants.
This underscores the value and reason for belonging to SAVVA, who are constantly promoting our cause
to the Road Ordinance and Licensing Authorities, not forgetting the Special Insurance Rates procured for
our Treasured Vehicles, without them the continuance and future of our Sport and Hobby, may become
problematical.
On another subject, the success of The Dam Busters Adventure Tour is entirely attributable to the efforts

VETERANS CORNER
WANTED:
1) ROC two speed epicyclic hub for my 1908 Humber. The hub is narrower, but has a bigger
diameter than, the Sturmey Archer hub of the period.
