The very first Christmas came by the birth of a newborn babe- a tiny vulnerable, helpless bundle that nonetheless held hope and promise for the world. And so Christmas always reminds us of the hope and promise inherent in our children. One chapter of the Christmas story tells of a journey Jesus’ parents took to ensure their little one’s safety. Last year, the parents of over 1,300 babies and children made a similar trip to Kids Kottage to ensure the safety of their little ones. Some parents saw their children faced with homelessness; some needed help to provide their families with food, some feared the ugly consequences of threatened and real violence played out in front of or involving their children; some parents struggled with their own physical or mental illnesses and needed emergency help to care for their children. Many parents were exhausted ‘from it all’ and could not go on without the help of someone who cared. At Kids Kottage they found someone who cared. The most special part of Christmas celebrations at Kids Kottage is the fellowship and fun that parents, children and staff share together through the outings and activities. The problems, fears and worries of daily life are assuaged with the hope, love and care that is extended at Christmas. We are so looking forward to RADIOTHON 2012, happening December 13th at West Edmonton Mall! Our faithful Radiothon sponsors, 105.9 Shine FM and AM 930 The Light will once more bring you a day of news and needs of Kids Kottage. 105.9 Shine FM is truly one of Kids Kottage’s greatest Christmas blessings! Please call 780944-(HOPE) on December 13th and make a generous donation to this vital and unique Kids Kottage crisis nursery program. Your gift will be special to each child and family we serve. Your donation will ensure support, understanding and encouragement to help them get through the hard times and look toward a better future. These are the true blessings of Christmas! The children, their parents, staff members and volunteers wish you all a joyous season. Edmonton Community Supports Children and Families THANKS FOR THE BEAUTIFUL BLOOMS. A group of creative young people from Starlight 4-H Club came in the early spring to collect the colorful plant pots they had donated last year. They returned the pots filled with beautiful flowers. Each member of the group planted their own pot. The collective project beautified the front of Kids Kottage. Thanks to all of you. Special thanks to Sean Miller for organizing the pick-up and delivery of the pots and for organizing the group to complete their planting project. We sure appreciate all of you! Many thanks to the people at ASTRAL MEDIA for their support of more than $2,000, raised during their annual golf tournament. Thanks for your support. BEST BUY staff from the store on 137th Avenue were not daunted by the weather’s poor showing on the day of the family event they had planned for Kids Kottage. Children still enjoyed the bouncy castle—it had moved indoors. The magic show was interactive, full of music and so much fun! Good healthy food adorned a big long table and of course a good time was had by all. A big ‘THANKS’ to you Best Buy! You make a huge difference in the lives of the children and families we help. It is so encouraging to know that someone cares when we are in trouble, or worried or afraid. Kids Kottage is pleased to receive a $20,000 donation from the OGILVIE LAW FIRM in honor of Bob Lloyd’s fifty years of employment with their firm. The donation will help Kids Kottage to fulfil our mission, to ensure that children are safe and receive the care they deserve when their families are in crisis or need respite. Back Row, R - L. Time to plan a party and decide what gifts she would like to receive. She found herself undecided about what kind of gifts she really needed and wanted. She concluded that she didn’t really need any specific gifts; perhaps she could find a way to give gifts to other kids who didn’t have much. How would she do that? As our young people are prone to do, she began her research. Who would know how to do that? She began with her grandmother who is also a social worker. Caylie’s grandma suggested that she find an organization that helps Edmonton Eskimo Alumni Association Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation Edmonton Opera Elegant Touches Phoebe Elliot Paul Ermantrout Ernest’s Dining Room Ernst & Young LLP Exel Canada Eyecare Group F.C. Step Two: Search the internet. What sorts of agencies in Edmonton help needy children? The name, Kids Kottage, caught her interest. A quick look at the website and Caylie determined that this would be the charity. And so Caylie implemented the rest of the plan. She invited her friends to help her buy gifts for the children who stay at Kids Kottage. Her friends were excited to help and donated money in a big way. When Jack Pierson heard what one twelve year old was attempting to do he came alongside to tell Caylie that she could bring the money to his wholesale toy store. That would stretch her gift money further. Jack’s employee’s caught the spirit A call to the Volunteer Co-ordinator and Caylie was assured she was ‘on the right track’. KIDS AT BEVERLY ALLIANCE CHURCH DELIVER GIFTS. Bev Munro is a faithful volunteer at Kids Kottage. Each Wednesday Bev can be seen at the computer we have long called, ‘Bev’s computer’, in the back office. She may be entering data, she may be developing our database manual, or she may be writing a grant application. When she is not at the Kottage helping Bev talks to others about Kids Kottage and the fulfillment and satisfaction she gains from her involvement with the organization. Bev’s grandchildren, Jillian, Garret and Chandler attended Beverly Alliance Daily Vacation Bible School that their mom, Kary, organized this summer. The little kids say they had a great time and Chandler enjoyed being a counsellor and developing his leadership skills. And Caylie was glad her brother and her friends came along to help her carry gifts in the day she delivered them. And what did the power of one accomplish for Kids Kottage? Kids Kottage now has a good start on this year’s Santa’s Workshop. And the angst we were already feeling about coming up short began to dissipate! Our hearts swell in gratitude to Caylie Ganam for exercising her power of ONE. Bev’s daughter, Kary, remembered her mom’s enthusiasm for Kids Kottage when she was looking for a project to involve the children while they attended DVBS. And so it was that on a bright sunny day in August Kary and her children met their Grandma, Bev, at the Kottage to deliver boxes of in-kind gifts all the children had collected for Kids Kottage. & Solicitors Karen Mazurek E Madge McColl Brett Maruyama Marc Restaurant Group Mary A Marshall Mary Jo McCune Ltd.
