New York Basel Venice Miami Hong Kong Dubai On Paper, Web & App Follow us on Facebook and Twitter myartguides.com It is no coincidence that Art Basel was founded in Basel, as the love of art has a long tradition in our city on the Rhine. The “Kunstmuseum Basel” houses the largest and most significant public art collection in Switzerland, based on the “Amerbach Cabinet” purchased in 1661, which made it the first municipally owned museum in Europe. In 1967, the citizenship of Basel voted for the public purchase of two Picassos, in a citywide plebescite, to enrich the already large collection. Touched by the democratic expression, Picasso presented four additional works to the city as a gift. From March to July, the “Kunstmuseum Basel” presents an ambitious retrospective of works drawn exclusively from Basel collections: “The Picassos are here!”. As a creative hotbed for artists and designers, the city of Basel hosts the head office of Herzog & de Meuron: this year Art Basel’s visitors have the chance to see the “Messe Basel” completely transformed with its new additional state of the art exhibition hall by the brilliant Swiss architecture firm. Basel is a charming city with a huge cultural background, where a strong cultural offer meets a great tradition of leisure and joie de vivre! This can be seen very vividly on the banks of the Rhine River, where you will find people taking a walk and recharging their batteries, or in the city’s many restaurants where culinary indulgences are served in every color. We wish you a wonderful stay in our city! And we are sure that if you visit us once, you will want to come back. Collectors are every day more used to looking overseas to follow and see how contemporary art trends move. In this new scenario Art Basel in Basel maintains its role as the centre of the scene. Art Basel has the rare capacity of assuming the flavour of the different cities in which it occurs—it has the effervescence of Miami and the intensity of Hong Kong. Art Basel in Basel has the power to attract only the very best, “la crème de la crème” of the contemporary art world: true art lovers, experts, critics, journalists and collectors. This year, My Art Guide Basel also features the Zurich art scene. Basel’s neighbour city is the home to many top international art galleries and important museums and many collectors chose to stay in this town during the Fair. For these reasons, we thought that a chapter dedicated to Zurich could make the guide more complete and useful for the Art Basel audience. As always you will find all updated information on exhibitions and events in My Art Guides web site and App. Enjoy the Fair! Mara Sartore Editor–in–Chief My Art Guides MY ART GUIDE BASEL How to Use the Guide “My Art Guide Basel 2013” is divided in 7 parts in order to organise the information and give a complete overview of the Art Basel art scene and events taking place during Art Basel, plus one additional chapter on Zurich. 1.
