Make sure to tell them you’re with SSIA. You can also visit SSIA’s web site (www.ssia.info) for a link to make reservations online. The deadline to reserve these additional rooms is June 30, but don’t delay as this block may also fill up before the deadline. You can register by visiting www.ssia.info/convention and clicking on the registration link. Member Benefits at the Convention This year’s convention will feature special benefits for members. Only members will be invited to SSIA’s annual meeting and breakfast Saturday morning. This is a chance to participate in decisions that impact the association and provide input into its direction. The breakfast cost is $15 per person. Members will also receive a t-shirt, a cloth bag and promotional items. If you want to join SSIA for breakfast and are not currently a member, please join at www.ssia.info/join. SSIA will also be hosting a Saturday night reception for members only. It sure is, but you need to know how! All are available for SSIA members to download free of charge from www. ssia.info/nsraw. National Shoe Repair Awareness Week Poster First, SSIA created a poster for in-store display. Artwork is available as a high-resultion PDF file. The poster is designed to be 24” x 36” but can also be reproduced at half that size if wall space is limited. www.ssia.info Press Release SSIA has authored a press release you can download, personalize and send to your local media. If you’re not comfortable working with the media, there are tips on the site to help you. There are also talking points about shoe repair — interesting sound bytes to attract attention. Bag Stuffer You will also find artwork for a bagstuffer you can send home with your customers. It tells them how they save their shoes, their money, their bodies and the environment with products and services available from shoe repair shops. Just download the artwork, personalize it with your logo and contact information and take it to your local copy center. It is an inexpensive and effective tool. Facebook Header SSIA has also created a Facebook header graphic you can use on your page. Just download the artwork and follow the simple instructions for changing your Facebook header. These materials are part of SSIA’s ongoing commitment to help its members promote shoe repair. It is one of several promotions produced in the past year. The previously-released materials can be found in the members-only section of SSIA’s web site. Shoe Service - Spring 2016 5 Support the Companies that Support You GLENN DIMAURO STRESSES HONESTY, CUSTOMER SERVICE AND QUALITY WORK The following companies are wholesaler members of SSIA. More important to him, though, is that his name will be forever associated with premier craftsmanship and excellence in shoe repair. This month we caught up with Glenn Dimauro who owns The Italian Cobbler in Westlake, Ohio. He is a third-generation repairman who has been fixing shoes for 47 years. He learned shoe repair in his grandparents’ shop just a few miles from SSIA’s 2015 convention in Jacksonville. He has been at his current location for 10 years. The Italian Cobbler is a busy shop that employs six people. It became even busier when Glenn won SSIA’s Robert DiRinaldo Grand Silver Cup at the aforementioned convention in Jacksonville. We asked Glenn about the secrets to his success and the impact of winning the Grand Silver Cup. What are the best things you have done to make your business successful? JOIN SSIA TODAY! Visit www.ssia.info/join to become a member today. You can join online or download an application to return by mail. 6 Shoe Service - Spring 2016 The three things that have really made my business successful are first and foremost quality work, also excellent customer service and being up front and honest with the customers. Okay, let’s start with quality. How did you develop the skills that led to the Grand Silver Cup? I learned by trial and error – one step at a time. I first learned shoe repair from one of my grandparents’ employees. He was a butcher. He knew the basics. That’s what I learned from him. Then there were about 20 other cobblers who came through that shop when I was young and I picked up different things from each one of them. As life went on, I knew there had to be a better way to fix things. I just started figuring it out – what looked right, what worked right and what was right. Eventually I developed my own techniques and my own craft. I shocked a lot of people by winning the Robert DiRinaldo Grand Silver Cup because they didn’t know me. I hadn’t entered before. I surprised myself as well. I entered to get the scoresheets back to see how my work measured up. I didn’t expect to win on my first try. How about customer service? For customer service, the girls on my front counter are my success. Most of the reviews I get on Yelp and Google are about them. They mention the workmanship and then mention the staff – how knowledgeable they are, how professional, how informative. Each one is trained. They have as much knowledge Shoe Service Institute of America as I do about shining and cleaning shoes, sometimes more. Of course, customer service also means treating customers properly. If you can’t be on the counter without yelling at the customers, put someone else on the counter who is going to be nice and pleasant. And service also means being open when your customers need you to be there. We don’t close our doors for lunch. We’re here six days a week. It can be grueling, but that’s what it takes. And what do you mean by being up front with customers? My customers also appreciate my honesty. If something is not worth fixing, I tell them. If there is a better way to do something they want, I tell them. They usually agree and always appreciate the information. What’s the biggest challenge you face? Employees. I have a rips and patch employee. They do all my set-ups for me. Then I do the fine stitching or things they can’t do. My counter help is all versed in www.ssia.info Customers appreciate Dimauro’s forthright approach. Excellent customer service, along with top quality craftsmanship, keeps them coming back. different aspects of the job – cleaning, clerical, sales. The three people on my counter are actually repairers except for my wife who does dye work and stretching. I have a sister-in-law who manages all of my accounts. She’s the manager of the store and she keeps everything running smoothly for me. But I’m in search of a cobbler. Employees, employees, employees. I know you have heard that from others. Can’t find proper employees. You try to train someone and they might make it a year and quit. Then you’ve wasted all that time. There is not a large pool of people who want to learn shoe repair. You know it’s not for everybody. We have all grown up in it – second, third, fourth generation shoe repairers. It’s in our blood. For them, they don’t like the dirt, the hours, the standing on their feet all day long. Shoe Service - Spring 2016 7 If I can find a qualified person, I can increase my sales. I can’t increase my sales any more without more employees. Has winning the Grand Silver Cup impacted your business? The Silver Cup increased my sales. I’m struggling to keep up with it. I have a very high demand. Every time I turn around, people are coming in with problem stuff. It’s not your normal soles and heels. It’s been very difficult. The public relations I’ve gotten has been crazy -- print, radio, television, word of mouth. It’s been amazing. I had a five-minute TV spot that got more than 45,000 views online in a week and a half. That doesn’t include the people who saw it on television where it hit another half million people. I’m getting shoes from near and far – items people didn’t want to trust to anyone else. It’s a blessing. I used to have a four-day turn-around. It turned into a week after I got back from Jacksonville. We might be up to two weeks by this fall if I can’t find proper help. They’re just going to have to wait. I can’t do it any faster and I’m getting older. I’m working 13-hour days six or seven days a week. I haven’t had a day off in three weeks. Just trying to stay caught up from the demand of the customers. Our customers have been great. Once we displayed the Silver Cup, the first thing they said was, “He deserves it. We know he does that kind of work.” They also saw me on television, in the 8 Shoe Service - Spring 2016 Shoe Service Institute of America newspaper, and on the radio. They were stopping by for the first couple months just to congratulate me. It’s a good feeling. The most important thing about winning, though, isn’t the cup itself, or the press. It is knowing that my name will live forever. The Grand Silver Cup is part of my legacy. I look at all the craftsmen that won and my name is on that list. It will always be there. That’s the best feeling, knowing that 100 years from now, my name will be on that list. It is great to look at that trophy every morning, but seeing my name that’s going to be there forever. That’s the coolest part. I also really appreciate the respect I’ve gotten from my peers. They have been great. My wife, my family, they’re all proud of me. I wish my parents and my grandmother were alive to see it. We hear a lot about shoe repair being a dying trade. What do you think of the future? The future of shoe repair is great if you want it to be. I opened up this shop 10 years ago. Even before I won the Silver Cup, it was very successful. I have expanded twice. The original shop was 800 square feet. Two years later I took over the shop next to me which was 1,200 square feet. Six years later, I took over a spot that was 500 square feet. Now I have 2,500 square feet. I can’t grow any further. It doesn’t make any sense as I don’t have the employees to grow. It’s incredible what you can do by doing good work. It all goes back to doing spectacular work. If you do spectacular work, word spreads. I don’t advertise. I advertised for the first year that I was in business. Then I stopped. The future of shoe repair depends on the individual owner. If you just want to do soles and heels, you’ll cut out a pretty good living. If you do other things – luggage, handbags, belts, wallets – you will be busier than anything. It’s amazing what happens. And be prepared to work. You’re going to have to work 13 hour days six or seven days a week. It all depends on what you want. If you want to be busy, it’s there. What is the bell I hear in the background every few seconds? That’s to let me know when customers come in. On Saturdays, we are exceptionally busy. That bell never stops. Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. I don’t hear it anymore. It just keeps on dinging, which is good. I have a friend who calls it the money bell. Whenever I hear the bell, I’m making money. www.ssia.info Shoe Service - Spring 2016 9 SSIA CONVENTION PREVIEW 15 REASONS TO LOVE KANSAS CITY THIS SUMMER MEET ROYALTY: Be there as the Kansas City Royals take the field following last year’s unforgettable season. Sponsored by Shoe Repair International. “Repair with Pink” participants offer pink heels and pink protective soles to their customers during October and donate a portion of the proceeds to the National Breast Cancer Foundation or their local breast cancer foundation. It is a chance for shoe repair shops to support a worthy cause and generate some publicity for doing so. ‘We received loads of publicity for the program and it was for a great cause,” says Sandra Verbruggen, whose Delaware shop, Fast Feet, participates in the program. “We were featured on the six o’clock news and in a full-page article in the Sunday News Journal. Radio stations announced the program. It was featured on the billboard at the mall and local businesses let us advertise for free in their locations.” “One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime,” Verbruggen continues. “By repairing with pink, both women and men can show solidarity and support the grandmothers, mothers, sisters daughters, wives and friends who have fought and continue to fight breast cancer.” Shoe repair shops, wholesalers and suppliers combined to raise more than $4,500 in 2015. If you would like to participate this year, visit www.repairwithpink.com.
