Gregg COMMODORE’S REPORT This is a great time of year. Now I know that there are some of you who are saying "is he nuts??” Its cold, miserable, dark..and worst of all, my boat is covered in ice and snow!". I suppose it’s whether you are a "glass is half full" or a "glass is half empty" kind of person. I like to look at it that there is way more winter behind us, than in front of us. Within 6 weeks or so, tarps will start to come off boats, the yard will sing with the soothing sounds of grinders, sanders and other power tools, and talk will turn to Regatta Weekend. Meanwhile, at the club there is a full slate of activities to make the next 6 weeks go a little faster--nav courses, dances, socials, special dinners--it's all designed to serve you, the member. Make a point of taking advantage of the club in the weeks ahead, because I guarantee you, all too soon the "list of things to do before launch" will come knocking!! And then, I'll see you on the water!! Tommy NEW YEAR SAILORS AYC sailors enjoying the day on Don Robinson’s Douglas 31 “Carole”, January 18th 2004. The displays were very well done, the staff at each location were professional, well turned out and offered boaters an opportunity to escape the daily routine for a few days. I was one of the first to get in the door on Thursday and I was not disappointed. I tried to visit all the booths, but I must confess I leaned to the sailing side a little more than the power side. The power side that I did visit was most impressive and even I picked up a few brochures detailing some of the most beautiful boats that I have seen in a long time. Boating is one of, if not the best family sport around. It promotes responsibility, good will and a sincere interest in keeping our coastlines and inland waterway clean for years to come. Once again, I bumped into several AYC Members and they all agreed that the toys that were at the show were very very nice. I had my eyes on a beauty. I quickly went and bought a lottery ticket as soon as I got to the local mall. See you at the club. In this short space of time the ladies washrooms, which were appalling, were totally renovated. The lower lobby got a face lift plus new flooring, the dining room and upper ward room also got spiffed up. The caterers have had some issues addressed re:equipment, also repairs to the bar area are on-going these of which are long overdue. In the near future the rear deck will be re-built, weather permitting. Sailors, we all dream about sailing alone around the world, but only a few of us actually do it. I shook the hand of Derek Hatfield at the Halifax boat Show and I must admit, it was great to meet someone who has completed such a journey. Once is incredible but, Derek is planning another trip, aboard the new Spirit of Canada, an open 60 racing sailboat. We are still looking for someone to run the race house this season. If you are interested or know someone who may be interested, send them our way. We would love a volunteer and would equally love to pay someone to do the job. Mostly, we would love to have the job filled and by a capable party. The Yard Committee will be meeting in early January to plan the work required in the yard for the coming year. If anyone has suggestions or questions, do not hesitate in speaking with me. I was having a great time, meeting new friends, on the first day and trying to outsail them on the second day. It was the first time that I had ever sailed in the Northwest Arm and I could not believe that I was so lucky to be one of the 100 or so teenagers, selected to represent their Corps. I was from the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corp Lion which was on shores of the bay at Hamilton, Ontario. I was sailing the famous 470 then and that was a lot of fun. The regatta was wonderful, the people were wonderful and I thought someday I will sail this area again and here I am..I want to thank all those that took the time to give us “Cadets” the time of our lives. Thanks. My memory, but I felt that it was worth sharing.
