M
arian Dreyer retired from the State
ten years ago and found that being
at home all day eating Bon Bons and
watching Days of Our Lives got pretty dull. Her
husband suggested volunteering. She thought
about becoming an advocate for seniors, but
picked cats over people, and so she began at
Happy Tails.
She’s done just about every possible job at
Happy Tails, including serving as the Center
Manager for six or seven months. She’s classified
as an Adoption Counselor, but she’s also on
the medical team, the transport team, and is in
charge of registering microchips.

When Marian isn’t spending time with the Happy Tails kitties, she’s caring for her
own. She started with no cats and ended up with seven before she knew it. They
range in ages from 8 to 21, and her husband is allergic to all of them.
Her first kitty was a tabby from Happy Tails that enjoys peeing on a specific oriental
rug “when it is too hot, too cold, too windy or not windy enough.” She got a friend for
him named Alice. Then, a feral mom and her kitten moved into her backyard, and
she also took home a hospice kitty from Happy Tails that everyone thought only
had a few more years left to live. Two years later, and he’s alive and well.
Our Cover Story:
Hoarding Rescue
In January, we received a call about a hoarding situation in Carmichael. A woman who was caring for
nearly 25 cats in her apartment had a stroke and was
no longer able to care for them.
Happy Tails and a few other local animal shelters came to the rescue and took several of these cats, providing them a home, food, necessary medical care and nursing
some of them back to health. Please visit Talia and others at the Center.

Simon Peter is a six-year old tabby who LOVES attention! He can be a little feisty! He came to us because
his owner was very ill. He loves to play. He’d do better
in a low-stress environment as he’s had some urinary
issues in the past.

Ziggy: In Loving Memory

Z
iggy was a beloved Happy Tails cat. A small, gray tabby
with a sweet face, he looked like a forever kitten. He
won everyone’s heart with his playful and affectionate
personality, and sunny disposition.
Ziggy was rescued by a good Samaritan. Unfortunately her
cats didn’t like him so she brought him to Happy Tails in 2009.
He tested positive for FIV but because he had no teeth, he
wasn’t a threat to other cats.
Many visitors were interested in adopting him, but Ziggy
just couldn’t break his bad habit of spraying. He seemed
to be content at the Center and received more than his fair
share of attention from visitors and volunteers.
I first saw Ziggy in 2013 on the Happy Tails website, which
led me to the Center soon thereafter. Although I didn’t
adopt him, that was that day I decided to become a volunteer and developed a deep love for this little guy.
Ziggy spent the last month of his life in my home. He fit
in with my other cats right away, and especially loved to
play with my big orange cat. He was always curious, funny
and loved to sleep on my lap. Always purring, he seemed
happy until he passed away on January 18.
There’s now a painting of Ziggy at the Center by the front
door, thanks to artist and volunteer, Barbara Dow, and one
painted by Ziggy hanging in the hallway. Forever reminders
of this special guy. Ziggy, you’ll be missed.
He Filled More Than Hearts

Ziggy stole the hearts of everyone at Happy Tails. He was a
rascal with a twinkle in his eye and always attracted the attention of potential adopters, however, we had to warn them
that he was a little guy who really liked to mark his territory.
He was once adopted and returned shortly afterward for
his less than desirable potty habits – he saturated a couch.
There are many stories about Ziggy’s potty adventures. For
me, there was the day he filled my Birkenstock and another
when he marked my back while I was sitting on the floor. It
didn’t matter though because we all loved him anyway.
Ziggy developed heart problems, hyperthyroidism and
sadly cancer. He was always a good sport about the
medication, however, three times a day is a lot even for the
sweetest of cats. Thanks to our amazing volunteer, Vicki, for
taking in Ziggy where he spent his last weeks in such a loving home. RIP sweet boy, we miss you.
Big Day
of Giving
(BDOG)
On May 3rd, starting at
midnight, Happy Tails will
join the national online
crowd-funding effort and
end at 11:59 p.m., which aims to raise $5 million for more
than 500 local nonprofits!
BDOG prompts donors to “put your money where your
heart is” by donating to the nonprofit of their choice. We’re
counting on you to select Happy Tails.

Painting for Paws: A ‘Purring’ Success

W
e held our 11th Annual Art Show & Silent Auction last
November and it was the most successful, elegant
and largest attended yet! We raised nearly $24,000!
The event was held at Arden Hills Resort & Spa, where we filled
the grand ballroom and adjacent room overlooking the courtyard
with hundreds of guests, vendors, silent auction items and
paintings from our talented four-legged Happy Tails’ residents –
all in support of Happy Tails!
Guests enjoyed world-class food from Arden Hills, wine, beer from
Hoppy Brewing Company and Starbucks coffee. Many endulged
in desserts from About a Bite Bakery and Capital Confectioners,
upper body massages from Bassil Kamas, music by Clemon
Charles, and a painting demo from Sandy Lindblad of Lindblad
Studios. Thanks to these businesses and our event photographer,
Andi Villegas from Greater Than Words Photo Artistry.
Thank you to the many local businesses whose donations made
our silent auction possible, and all of our volunteers, vendors,
Board members and Jenn Robirds Events who helped make this
the tremendous success it was for our Happy Tails animals!

An Unexpected Treasure

M
any of the long-term volunteers from the old
Center off H Street will remember Carl. He was
the strikingly handsome orange tabby, who
served as the Happy Tails mascot for eight years.
Carl has been the
perfect addition to his
new family and now at 17
years-young, he’s healthy
and as feisty as ever. He
never fails to greet his
family at the door with a
meow and swish of the
tail and when they are
home Carl is almost
always close by if not
sitting in a lap. Carl got a sister from Happy Tails named
Coco, whom he loves to pursue in slow-motion cat chases.
Back then, Carl spent most of his days on top of a file cabinet, greeting visitors with a gentle scowl and an occasional
swat of the paw. He was infamous for his big personality
and his occasionally unruly behavior.
Unfortunately Carl was an example of a cat who did not
exactly thrive in the Center environment; he often did not
get along with his other feline companions and it was
sometimes even difficult for Center volunteers to handle
him. Certainly by some, Carl would have been deemed
‘unadoptable.’
A few years later his little brother Stanley arrived (also from
Happy Tails). Stanley thinks Carl is the greatest thing since
canned cat food, and if Carl is doing something, you can
be certain that Stanley will join him. Carl has been an excellent mentor, teaching Stanley the finer points of life.
Carl’s life took a dramatic turn on a fateful day in 2007. His
adoptive parents recall that day well. “We won the lottery
because that’s the day we adopted an orange ball of fur
named Carl!” She added, “I’ll never forget the surprise in the
eyes of the volunteers, as well as in Carl’s, as I placed him
in my lap, where he settled right in for a long sit. We were
instantly sold on his good looks and colorful personality.”
Carl’s story is a great example of what can happen when
the right cat finds the right home. Carl has blossomed into
the “Best cat ever.” But all of us at Happy Tails know that
every cat can have a happy ending if just given the chance.

A handsome prince who likes people and will sit on your lap
on his terms. He has been declawed, which could account
for some moments when he looks at people and says, “I am
not sure if I really trust you.” Onslow is a love and would like
to go home with you.

This beautiful boy is shy and needs an owner that will take
the time to build trust. His previous parent fell ill and could
no longer care for him. He gets along with other cats and
will love you forever once you’ve earned his trust.

She’s a super affectionate girl who loves attention from anyone willing to give her some love. Honeysuckle is a favorite
among our volunteers. She’s looking for a forever home and
gets along with other cats.

Since he’s been in foster care, he has gained
weight and has learned to sit. From the start, he’s always
gotten along well with other dogs. He’s also a real ‘people
person,’ eager to meet new people and follow his current
foster parents around.
