History Makers...THEN and NOW!
Congresswoman Shirley Chishlom represented New York’s 12th Congressional District for seven terms. She was
the first African American woman elected to Congress, and the first woman to run for the Democratic presidential
nomination. Surviving three assassination attempts during her campaign, this author, educator and politician
proved that women had a placed in politics.
CELEBRATING OUR HISTORY...THEN AND NOW!:
”Read Abut Me” (RAM): Join in our outreach
initiative this month as we celebrate our history
through literacy awareness. We’re asking everyone
to donate books for ages 2-10, written by African
American authors, featuring stories and pictures
of African American children. The desired outcome
is not only for African American children to read
about themselves, but for other cultures to read
about “me” also. We’ve included a list of suggested
authors and books on our website. Books will be
donated to our LOZ Ministry and the Elementary
School Library in each of our campus communities.
Please share any questions with our Outreach

WELCOME TO WORSHIP!
Our Theme This Year: “GREAT>R!”
I am telling you the truth: those who believe in me will do what I do—yes, they
will do even greater things, because I am going to the Father. - John 14:12 (GNB)
12
Dr. Lance Watson and First Lady Rose Watson, our staff,
leadership team and the entire Saint Paul’s Family are excited
that you have chosen to worship with us today! Our prayer is

Worship Celebration
GATHERING STATEMENT
(Please Stand and Read Responsively)
One Voice: I love the Lord, because God heard my cry. Because
the Lord listened to me, I will continue to call on the Lord as long
as I live.
Many Voices: Gracious is the Lord. Yes, our God is merciful. The
Lord preserves the pure in heart: I was in a low place, but God
helped me.
One Voice: Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, and
before you were born, I consecrated you; I appointed you a
prophet to the nations.
Many Voices: No weapon that is fashioned against you shall
prosper; and you shall refute every tongue that rises against
you. This is the inheritance of the servants of the Lord. The
Lord will guide you continually, satisfy your needs in desperate
places, and make you strong.
OPENING PRAYER (In Unison)
Teach us God to love as you love, Make our love unconditional,
honest and kind. Give us the power to offer our love without
speaking, to demonstrate it in our actions and our lives. Show us
how to forgive, Lord, as you do; not to burden others with guilt or
play the role of the martyr, but to be a rock on which trust may be
built. Make our love for others far greater than any love offered
to us. Lead us and inspire us through your spirit that we might
be a loving presence in the world. Empower us to focus on what
matters most. Give us the strength to open our hearts fully that
you might change us and through our witness that we might
change others. In the Name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
OPENING PRAISE—LIFT EV’RY VOICE AND SING
Lift ev’ry voice and sing,
Til earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the list’ning skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on ‘til victory is won.
February 16, 2014 • BEL, CRE & ELM
Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chastening rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;
Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,
Out from the gloomy past,
‘Til now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.
God of our weary years,
God of our silent tears,
Thou who has brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who has by Thy might
Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,
Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;
Shadowed beneath Thy hand,
May we forever stand,
True to our God,
True to our native land
UNISON SCRIPTURE READING: MARK 6:1-6 (NIV)
Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by
his disciples. 2 When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the
synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed.
1
“Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this
wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable
miracles he is performing? 3 Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this
Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon?
Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.
Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in
his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.” 5 He
could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few
sick people and heal them. 6 He was amazed at their lack of faith.
4
Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village.
