McKean County, Pennsylvania 17 visitANF.com Birding Trails Location is everything, they say, and that goes for the Allegheny National Forest Region and birds. More than 200 species of birds can be found on the Allegheny National Forest, including bald eagles and osprey. The most common birds found are the ruffed grouse, the state bird of Pennsylvania, and the wild turkey. Buzzard Swamp, south of Kane, is a prime area to view these birds. The mourning warbler will likely be seen in clear-cut areas. Some of the most common warblers seen here are yellow, chestnut-sided, yellow-rumped, northern parula and bay-breasted. The hard-wooded forests are home to such birds as the yellow-bellied sapsucker, winter wren and hermit thrush. Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) are a fish- Bald eagles (haliaeetus leucocephalus) are among the largest birds of prey. They may weigh up to 14 pounds and have seven-foot wingspans. Bald eagles are readily identified by their white heads and tails; however, they don’t attain this plumage until five years of age. They nest in large trees near water. Bald eagles have been sighted at the Allegheny Reservoir, Tunungwant Creek, and north of Eldred along the Allegheny River and Oswayo Creek. Birding Sites An excellent interpretive trail, Timberdoodle Flats, is a 1.4 mile loop trail located along Rt. 59 southwest of Bradford. This trail is named for the American woodcock, also knows as the timberdoodle, that uses both the forest and open areas for nesting. At Tracy Ridge Campground, you might find a northern saw-whet owl from March through July. Big Bend Birding Overlook Cerulean warblers sing in the oak trees along the Tracy Ridge Trail. Other suggested sites for birding are Marilla Reservoir, Rt. 346 in the Willow Bay area connecting to NY Rt. 280 along the northern portion of the Allegheny Reservoir, and along Rt. 59 at the Big Bend Birding Overlook just past the Kinzua Dam. Want to learn more about birding? Osprey nests can be viewed from Rt. 321 from the Red Bridge Area, Chappel Bay, Sugar Bay and Rt. 346 from Willow Bay. OUTDOOR ADVENTURES Finding Bigfoot Myth or Fact? Bigfoot (Sasquatch), named for its large footprints, is normally described as a large bipedal humanoid that lives in remote, heavily forested areas throughout the world. Folklore provides us with detailed descriptions of Bigfoot in every continent except Antarctica. These creatures are believed to communicate with each other by knocking on wood. An unidentifiable creature was captured by a game camera, mounted in a tree by Rick Jacobs in a remote area of the ANF. Researchers from Animal Planet’s Finding Bigfoot sought out Bigfoot in the Kinzua Valley and the ANF. Their research concluded this region has positive sightings and signs of Bigfoot. Could Bigfoot really be living here? Many locals believe, but others have fun promoting the idea. Plan on having your photo taken with “Bigfoot,” statues of the creature located at Bell’s Meat Market in Kane, and at Rock City Park. Locally, you can purchase Bigfoot Wine, Bigfoot Sausage and other products. The Great Finding Bigfoot GeoTrail Travel the footpaths of pioneer settlers, wildcatters, bootleggers…and possibly Big Foot as you search for the 30 geocaches hidden along the Great Finding Bigfoot Geotrail. Record the secret code found in each geocache on the downloadable form, then mail the completed form into the ANF Visitors Bureau to receive your free trackable geocoin. Entries will be submitted into a contest to win a free GPS unit. Download your form at: visitANF.com. Geocaching Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunt. It is a fun, free, interactive way to enjoy the outdoors and technology, and it is suitable for all ages. Enter a zip code on geocaching.com to begin. Use the clues and a GPS unit or smart phone to find the hidden caches. A cache, in geocaching language, is the hidden item containing either a code or stamp enabling you to obtain a trackable geocoin. In our region, there are thousands of geocaches. Popular local zip codes to get you started are: 16701, 16735, 16749, 16731, 16347, 16333, 16740 and 14779. Have Fun! In 1882, General Thomas Kane, a Philadelphia lawyer, decorated Civil War veteran, and president of the New York, Lake Erie and Western Coal Company, had rich coal deposits south of the Kinzua Valley. But since his customers were to the north, Kane needed to cross that valley. Kane needed a bridge. Paris-born Octave Chanute, chief engineer for the Erie Railroad, rose to the challenge. The man who would later help the Wright brothers fly had a bold solution … a bridge unlike any the world had seen. Once billed as the “Eighth Wonder of the World” this masterpiece was hit by a tornado in 2003 and laid in partial ruins until September 15, 2011 when the grand opening of the Kinzua Sky Walk brought life back into the Kinzua Bridge State Park. The Kinzua Sky Walk is a pedestrian walkway built on six of the historic viaduct towers which remained following the tornado. Extending over 600 feet out into the gorge, the skywalk features an octagon-shaped overlook at the end with a partial glass floor which allows visitors to peer down below. Visitors can once again experience the thrill of “Walking the Tracks Across the Sky” as they enjoy stunning views spanning miles across the landscape. History of the Bridge Chief Engineer Octave Chanute contracted the Pennsylvania firm of Clarke, Reeves & Company to design and fabricate the bridge. Adolphus Bonzano designed a wrought iron bridge using his “Phoenix Column,” an engineering breakthrough that enabled tall structures to resist vibration and buckling. The bridge was pre-fabricated in Phoenixville, near Philadelphia, and transported to the site for erection. Once the sandstone foundation piers were in place, 125 men completed the construction in just 94 days. Three and one-half million pounds of iron and $275,000 later, the first steampowered train rolled across delivering General Kane’s coal to market. The Viaduct was an immediate sensation. It stood 24 feet higher than the Brooklyn Bridge and became an instant tourist attraction. Walking out on the bridge was the next best thing to flying. But by 1900, the locomotives and railroad cars hauling coal and timber across the Viaduct had become larger and heavier. A stronger steel bridge was required. Using 6.7 million pounds of steel held together by 895,000 rivets, workers erected a new bridge to replace the original. Two timber travelers worked toward the center, demolishing the oil iron towers one at a time as the new steel ones were hoisted into place. A crew of 100 to 150 men, working 11hour days, finished construction in just four months. 32 Allegheny National Forest Region Park of the Year 2012 KINZUA Sky Walk the Sky For generations, freight trains loaded with coal, lumber and oil roared across the Kinzua Viaduct. Later, excursion trains brought sightseers and visiting engineers from around the globe to view the majestic bridge. Since 1963, the bridge has served as the centerpiece of the Kinzua Bridge State Park. The Power of Nature Tornado Strikes July 21, 2003 Bridge designer C.R. Grimm predicted his creation would last 100 years. And he was right. Grimm’s design used roller expansion bearings where the tower legs were anchored to the masonry foundation piers. This design allowed lateral expansion of the tower legs under temperature loading. But his failure to replace the original 1881 anchor bolts would have catastrophic consequences. In July 2003, engineers and skilled bridge builders were hard at work on a $12 million repair project to reinforce the aging structure. The workers decided to call it a day when the sky went black and the winds rushed in. A tornado tore through the forest heading straight for the Viaduct. Hundreds of trees were ripped from their roots and 11 of the bridges 20 towers were lifted, twisted and thrown onto the valley floor. Engineers later confirmed that winds attacked from three directions. The original 1882 anchor blots and collar coupling assemblies, which mated the old bolts to the later 1900 construction, had failed. Within 30 seconds, nature had brought the mighty span to its knees. Kinzua Bridge State Park Featuring the Kinzua Sky Walk, scenic overlooks, lovely picnic areas, interpretive programs, and a rentable park pavilion for groups, this day use park is open year round. Admission is free. A new trail to a viewing platform allows you to view the understructure of the mighty towers of the Kinzua Sky Walk. The Kinzua Bridge Scenic Byway is a designated shared use hike/bike corridor that leads to the park from Route 6 in Mt. Jewett. Set your GPS for: 1721 Lindholm Drive, Mount Jewett, PA. Group tours and motorcoach are welcome, please call or e-mail the park to schedule free tours.*Please note that during 2014 and 2015, construction will be underway at the park for a new full-service visitors center. Best Color - the last two weeks of September, Labor Day and the first two weeks of October. 56 Allegheny National Forest Region Driving Tours Motor Through the Mountains The Highlands of the Alleghenies are know far and wide for their scenic beauty. Crossing from Ohio into Pennsylvania, through the western counties, Pennsylvania Route 6 - designated “One of America’s Most Scenic Drives” by National Geographic Magazine-is perfect for touring by car, motorcycle or RV. Late September and early October are prime times for viewing fall foliage. Trees practically swallow the highway as it winds into the Allegheny National Forest Region in Sheffield, Allegheny Cellars Winery celebrates the rugged terrain by offering their signature “Big Foot” wine. Following Rt. 6 east you are now entering McKean County, Trail Central. Olmsted Manor The world’s finest hardwoods are grown in this area. Just before Ludlow, watch for signs on the right that lead to the Tionesta National Scenic Area. This is the largest strand of ancient trees on the Allegheny National Forest. Nearby, Olmsted Manor, Wildcat Park and the trail systems within the forest offer lovely diversions. In Kane, plan a stop at ArtWorks at the Depot, a Pennsylvania Wilds Artisan Shop. “Foodies” will want to visit Bell’s Meat & Poultry, Texas Hot Lunch 4 Sons and Flickerwood Wine Cellars & Lounge to sample the authentic foods and wines of the region. Route 6 now winds through the forest to Lantz Corners and Mount Jewett, sites to see include Nebo Chapel and the Mount Jewett Heritage Mural. Jewett’s Kaffe Sol serves up local history along with great coffee and cappuccino. Take an interesting four mile side trip here at the Kinzua Bridge Scenic Byway to the Kinzua Bridge State Park, home of Kinzua Bridge State Park the recently opened Kinzua Sky Walk. A “must see” destination, the Kinzua Sky Walk is a stunning pedestrian walkway with a partial glass floor built on the restored towers of the historic Kinzua Viaduct, once the largest and highest railroad viaduct in the world. Return to Route 6 to travel east through rural farms and forest to Smethport. Plan time to stroll through the Smethport Mansion District and visit the Old Jail Museum and Hamlin Lake. Between Smethport and Port Allegany, stop to see the restoration process for Lynn Hall. Route 6 begins following the course of the AlleghenyRiver. Eastward beyond McKean County, follow Route 6 east to the PA Lumber Museum in Galeton. paroute6.com McKean County, Pennsylvania Smethport Mansion District 57 Outdoor Resources Outdoor Resources Allegheny National Forest - Ranger Stations Bradford: 814-362-4613 Marienville: 814-927-6628 Warren: 814-723-5150 fs.usda.gov/allegheny • e-mail: r9_allegheny_nf@fs.fed.us State Parks and Forests Fishing/Boating 1-888-PA-Parks Forests: 717-783-7941 dcnr.state.pa.us e-mail: parkinfo@state.pa.us 717-705-7800 fish.state.pa.us dcnr.state.pa.us e-mail: parkinfo@state.pa.us PA Game Commission U.S. Army Corps of Engineers 570-398-4744 Kinzua Dam: 814-726-0661 Allegheny National Forest Ranger Station Gift shop, topography maps, ATV permits, tourist information. 24-hour information kiosk.
