At any given moment, a gathering of Ravens Cheerleaders could be found poolside either chatting, sunning, or engaging in an energetic game of Bingo or volleyball. Megan A. Though the Bahamas is famous for the world’s most beautiful water, Megan proves the Caribbean Sea is no match for the beauty of a one of Baltimore’s finest. For Megan, “Running out of the tunnel on game days is my favorite thing in the whole world. It is super exciting to feel the energy from the crowd as anticipation of the game starts to get the fans pumped up!” WHERE WE ARE: Freeport is a 230-square-mile city on Grand Bahama Island. Established in 1955 by the Government of The Bahamas, Freeport began as 50,000 acres of swamp and scrub that would eventually transform to become the cosmopolitan center it is today. M.R. 17 Keishawna G. The pride of Parkville, Keishawna has been on the squad for the past three years—cheering for a total of six. She is quick to observe FULL PAGE AD that this Bahamas excursion has provided an amazing opportunity “to build true friendships and share great experiences—it’s a really great bonding experience.” Keishawna also holds the honor of being selected as Miss December the very first year she appeared in the calendar. Though reminiscent of New Orleans’ Mardi Gras and Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival, Junkanoo, which dates back to the 16th century, gave our ladies a modern-day opportunity to bring the energy of Baltimore to this uniquely Bahamian event. Courtney L. (left) and Angel P. (right) give it their all, lose themselves in the music, and have the time of their life. Huey is also a contributing photography editor for Harper’s magazine. Primarily known for documentary journalism, Huey alleges, “I think I’m kind of a chameleon—I can kind of shoot anything. I’m sure this [calendar shoot] has made me a stronger photographer.” Challenges abounded in this tropical paradise: unpredictable weather, locations or lack of locations, and the cheerleaders’ varied modeling experience caused Huey and his two assistants to take special care in making all of the ladies feel both confident and comfortable. In Huey’s words, “It’s really hard to keep in mind all the body positions while coaching facial expressions and working around time frames. I also don’t do other shoots where there are 40 people behind me watching and involved.” He continues, “I have to be on-point all the time. I need to know what I want in order to inspire confidence. Plus, I need to produce perfect photos.” Huey is also known for his 3,349 mile, solo walk across America (with his dog Cosmo). The 2002 journey lasted 154 days. There was no media coverage. They walked every step. Following the walk, he took a 2½ year hiatus from shooting photos to build Hueyhaus, an artist-in-residence program on the Pecos River east of Santa Fe, New Mexico. As for this year’s calendar shoot, Huey exclaims, “Doing fortyfive shoots in four and a half days—that’s just completely absurd. It’s incredible that we’re able to even pull it off.” Judging by the results in these pages, Huey and his colleagues more than pulled it off. Huey with assistants Chet Hay and Drew Ludwig. NO MAN IS AN ISLAND… VARIATIONS ON A THEME. Photographers frequently take advantage of assorted camera angles, changing light, and model juxtaposition to create a series of contrasting portraits during the never-ending search for “the one.” (Below center) Whether to honor their favorite football team or simply to keep warm, our cheerleaders huddle up. …and never has this oft-quoted expression seemed more appropriate. Friends since their college days, Drew Ludwig served as one of Huey’s two assistants. During the course of the shoot, Ludwig jokingly became known as “a ladyshaper” based on Huey’s frequent requests for him to “get up there and shape that girl.” Huey and Ludwig have been flanked by beautiful women before having also worked with Victoria’s Secret models in New York. Chet Hay, Huey’s full-time assistant and ladyshaper #2, also brought a very specific skill set to the table. “Chet was a model so Chet, from being in-front of the camera, knows what the camera needs.” To learn more about Aaron Huey and his work, please visit his website at aaronhuey.com Whitney J. 34 Adriene B. 35 . T a n n a o J Sarah S. Janine Z. Rachel J. Courtney L. Amy H. Stephanie L. 37 Dana G. Like many Ravens Cheerleaders, Dana has dedicated herself to a career in education. A University of Maryland graduate and Kindergarten teacher, FULL PAGE AD Dana loves the well-deserved stress relief that comes from cheering her team to victory. This year marked Dana’s sixth year with the Ravens and third year as a Team Captain. Dana’s joy shines in “Being able to do what I love, for a team that I love, with the people that I love.” M.R. 39 Tanya V. This soft-spoken rookie is on her way to becoming a special education teacher. Inspired by three younger siblings, Tanya strives to set a good example FULL PAGE AD and make people smile. She loves going to the Inner Harbor to try new restaurants or visit the National Aquarium. There are 700 Islands of Bahamas sprinkled over 100,000 square miles of ocean and Tanya could make any of them look even more beautiful. A. H. 41 Hillary J. This former University of Maryland cheerleader is a rookie member of the Ravens Cheerleaders. Having just graduated in May with a degree in FULL PAGE AD Psychology, Hillary plans to become a marriage and family therapist. It could be said that Hillary has trained to be a Ravens Cheerleader for many years. S. S. A. H. 56 57 57 THE CALENDAR SHOOT A Practice makes perfect s is the case with any sport, practice makes perfect. Every routine has to be perfected before hitting the field on game day. Despite the location changing from Baltimore to the Bahamas, practice was still the word for the day. As every Ravens Cheerleaders knows, “good” is not good enough. Arms in alignment? Check. Legs at the same angle? Check. Toes pointed? Check. Through their on-field performances and off-field camaraderie, this team redefines the concept of being in unison with each other. The only co-ed stunt team in the NFL, our Cheerleaders also redefine the concept of “flying high.” 58 59 The stunt team wraps up practice with another powerful demonstration of what it means to have strength in numbers. Kristen D. On the squad for seven years and a high school teacher in both Chemistry and Nutrition Science, Kristen continually aspires to “get involved with the community to make a positive impact on people.” A concept she undoubtedly brings into her classrooms.
