The last 10 miles are single lane. 120.3 - Siletz River Hwy 229 follows the Siletz River for several miles before continuing south through the town of Siletz and reaching Toledo, 7 miles east of Newport. Siletz is the site of the annual Nesika Illahee Pow Wow in August. Take the road on the inland side of Hwy 101. Picnic facilities are near the parking lot. A trail leads under the highway to a beach and dramatic rock formations. 126.4 - Boiler Bay State Scenic Viewpoint The J. Marhoffer, a small freighter, sank here in 1910. One of the best locations on the coast to spot gray whales. 128.0 - Depoe Bay (ZIP 97341) The land that now is Depoe Bay was allotted by the U.S. government in 1894 to a Siletz Indian named Charlie Depot. His last name was derived from his employment at a U.S. army depot. Depoe Bay may have only 1100 fulltime residents, but it still knows how to put on a party. April brings the Classic Wooden Boat Show, Crab Feed, and Ducky Derby. The Fleet of Flowers is on Memorial Day, and the annual salmon bake is in September. Depoe Bay claims to have the world’s smallest navigable harbor. Charter fishing and whale-watching boats can be on the open sea in just minutes. A sea wall runs almost the full length of town and is known for the “spouting horns,” rock formations that turn crashing waves into plumes of water on stormy days. Winter storm-watching in this town is very popular. 131.2 - Cape Foulweather Panoramic views but no facilities. Captain James Cook named the promontory in 1778 on a day of particularly inclement weather. Winds can reach 100 mph during storms. This was once Hwy 101 itself, but the roadway is now a one-way (southbound) scenic drive with spectacular views between here and Cape Foulweather. About 1/10 mile along this road is Rocky Creek Bridge. This McCullough-designed, reinforced-concrete bridge was built in 1927, and the concrete has recently been treated to prolong its life. The old bridge, built in 1936, was the first and only large coastal bridge designed by Conde McCullough that has been replaced. The new bridge has a clearance of 70 feet, and steel and concrete pilings reach more than 100 feet into the bedrock below. At the south end of the bridge is the Historic Alsea Bay Bridge Interpretive Center with its historic transportation and coastal bridge displays in addition to general visitor information (541-563-2002). Bridge walks and nature walks have become popular, and Drift Creek Wilderness, a few miles east of Waldport, is accessible to hikers. Points of interest in town include the Waldport Heritage Museum and Alsea Bay Bridge Interpretive Center, which is also home to the Waldport Chamber of Commerce. A wayside at the south end of town provides beach access. The annual Smelt Fry in July coincides with the Yachats Music Festival, a popular three-day series of cameo performances by 20-30 major classical artists. G WYNN heritage tree. The fissure in the basalt known as Devils Churn provides exceptional wave action. A paved trail leads down from the parking lot. Cape Perpetua Campground is open May through September. The road to Cape Perpetua Day-Use Area and Stone Shelter winds upwards from the north side of the campground. At 802 feet, the viewpoint is spectacular. The stone shelter was built in the 1930s and served as a lookout for enemy ships and planes during World War II. The Visitor Center offers RV parking, exhibits, book/gift shop, and a theater. Recreation pass required. Call for information about guided walks and summer and winter hours (547-3289 or 563-3211). The wave action at Cooks Chasm has undercut the rock to form caves and blowholes. 173.9 - Ocean Beach Picnic Area USFS picnic area. A recreation pass required. 176.0 - Carl G. Washburne State Park Named in honor of a highway commissioner of the 1930s who donated the bulk of the 1100-acre park. Picnic tables near the beach and restrooms are located west of Hwy 101. From the beach follow a trail to the former assistant lighthouse keeper’s home, Heceta House, and continue to lighthouse. The trail rises behind the lighthouse and connects with Hobbit Trail (1 mile round-trip), which is a fun romp through tunnel-like trail to beach. It’s one of McCullough’s most unique and attractive arch designs. 179.0 - Heceta Lighthouse Viewpoint If you’ve seen a calendar with a photo of Heceta Lighthouse, chances are that this is where the picture was taken. Early morning is best before wind or sea spray pick up. A little fog, however, can add to the photo. 179.3 - Walk through World’s Largest Sea Cave Visit the Sea Lion Caves 11 miles north of Florence and take the elevator down to see the world’s largest sea cave and its resident sea lions. Ample parking. Gift shop and restrooms are wheelchair accessible but the caves are not. To purchase a pass, contact the Oregon Dunes Visitor Center (milepost 211.4) or any Forest Service office. 190.0 - Florence (ZIP 97439) With a population of nearly 9000, Florence has a modern hospital, library, and events center. Florence is home to the first designated State Park Dive Park, which is located on the Siuslaw River just off North Jetty Road. The world’s first sand board park is on the north end of town. For those who enjoy golf, two 18-hole courses, Ocean Dunes and Sandpines, provide plenty of challenge. 191.7 - South Jetty Road South Jetty Road heads west from Hwy 101 into the dunes. Just before the foredunes, the road turns north. Several parking areas on South Jetty Road provide easy access to the beach, but there is no camping. Surfers and windsurfers often use this as a staging area, and out near the jetty people catch crabs off the pier in season. The pier is also a dive site. A recreation pass required. 190.3 - Rhododendron Drive—North Jetty Road Head west on Rhododendron, then left at North Jetty Road. The north jetty is popular for scuba diving and walks on the beach. 190.6 - Old Town Florence Located on the riverfront, Old Town has restaurants, shops, and galleries. The Siuslaw Pioneer Museum is located in the historic Florence school building at 278 Maple Street. Exhibits at the museum cover a range of topics dating to early days of settlement. Open Tuesdays through Sundays (541-997-7884). 190.9 - Siuslaw River The river is navigable about 14 miles inland to Mapleton. It is popular with both sport fishermen and crabbers. The Siuslaw River Bridge was one of five major bridges built in 1936, and like the others, replaced ferry service across the river. This combination steel double-leaf bascule drawspan is also noted for its many decorative touches. 191.7 - Florence, Ride the Dunes See the towering dunes and the off-roadvehicles that climb them off South Jetty Road. Then experience the thrill by taking your own ride. Continue south on Hwy 101 to find two companies that offer dune rides. The Oregon Dunes Visitor Center is in Reedsport. All sites on 193.4 - Jessie M. Honeyman State Park This 522-acre park, named after an early proponent of the state parks system, has a campground open year-round. Honeyman includes three lakes: Woahink on the east side of the highway, Cleawox, and Lily to the west. Access the dunes October 1 through April 30. Day-use facilities on Cleawox Lake (fee area) include picnic and swimming areas. Woahink Lake has a boat ramp and swimming and picnic facilities (541-997-3641). 196.5 - Westlake (ZIP 97493) A well-marked road east to Siltcoos Lake leads to Tyee Campground, a 14-site Oregon Dunes NRA campground that accepts reservations. In less than a mile, the road reaches Siltcoos Lake, tiny Westlake, and a public boat ramp. 196.9 - Siltcoos River Take the Westlake turnoff to the public boat ramp on Siltcoos Lake. A 3- to 4-mile canoe trail starts in Siltcoos Lake and moves along Siltcoos River through forest, dunes, and salt marsh to an estuary and the ocean.
