Ctomorrow reating today 2010 Annual Report LUTHER M ANOR Ctomorrow reating today Our mission The mission of Luther Manor is to share God’s love by enriching the lives of older adults through excellent housing, care and services. Our philosophy The philosophy of Luther Manor is to fulfill our mission and vision by collaborating with clients, their families (advocates) and staff members to ensure that actual and perceived needs are assessed and addressed in ways that: • Affirm and nurture the spirituality of each person. • Retain client participation in decision making. • Preserve and expand personal choices and client (service) options. • Promote and foster independence and personal autonomy. • Maintain a service-rich environment of caring among clients, families, volunteers and staff members. • Utilize Luther Manor programs and services, as well as those available through the broader community. Our vision Guided by our Christian heritage and shared values, we consistently strive to exceed the expectations of those we serve. We seek to provide environments that contribute to the wholeness of body, mind and spirit for all persons who encounter Luther Manor. We respond to changing needs by providing a network of information and services to our constituents and to the older adults of our community. We are open and receptive to collaborative efforts with other organizations and encourage others to share our mission. We will be recognized for excellence in providing housing and services for older adults in the Greater Milwaukee area. Roger Pitico, Lakefield Adult Day Center participant, works in the raised garden bed. On the cover Creativity and spontaneity abound throughout the Luther Manor community In addition to highlights and accomplishments, financial information and donor and volunteer lists, the Luther Manor 2010 Annual report features works of art crafted by Luther Manor residents and day services participants. The creations that grace the inner pages of this publication represent only a small sample of the gallery of paintings, sculptures and mixed media creations on display within the community. The painting providing the backdrop for the cover of the Luther Manor 2010 Annual Report was created by Adult Day Services participant, Joanne Hintz and will be displayed at Carroll University in 2011. The photos displayed on the cover and the following pages paint a picture of the caring, faithful community of neighbors and friends that is Luther Manor. ~2~ Ctomorrow reating today A year of affirmation “I am at complete peace when she is there. I love it.” A family member of a Luther Manor Adult Day Services participant “Thank you for all the services you provided. Your sacrifice to be of service is greatly appreciated.” Family member of a resident of the Courtyards at Luther Manor “I can’t begin to put into words what it feels like to have our hope back. In a year, my dad has shown improvement.” A family member of a Jump Start Brain Fitness program participant “Exercise at Luther Manor is fun and games – music, laughter and new friends disguise the benefits. Since taking advantage of the many fitness opportunities at Luther Manor, I sleep better, walk steadier, breathe deeper, feel stronger and happier and think more clearly. My blood pressure and cholesterol are down and my friendships and moods are up.” Terrace resident and fitness program participant “Whenever the nurses or aides approached Mom, they did so with gentleness and love, speaking words of sweetness to her and telling her that they loved her. I thought, Lord is this normal, or are they extending something special for this lovely woman. Both, I think.” The son of a Luther Manor Hospice Care client “Our family would like to thank everyone involved with the excellent care our mom received during her time of recovery at Luther Manor. You are all very dedicated “miracle workers” in our eyes. Mom is doing well thanks to all your hard work.” The family of a guest of the Rehabilitation Center at Luther Manor “I just wanted to thank you for welcoming my father and also for answering all my questions along the way. What you do must surely be a lifesaver for hundreds of families like it is for us.” The family of a Luther Manor Lakefield Adult Day Center participant “Our mother enjoyed the many volunteers who made her days better. My particular favorites were the coffee and cookie cart and the popcorn delivery – I know Mom enjoyed these also – especially visiting with each of the volunteers. All of the things they do help to make Luther Manor the very special place it is.” The family of a Luther Manor Health Care Center resident “The River Oaks staff brought joy into our mom’s life, and we were comforted knowing she was in loving hands.” The daughters of a Luther Manor at River Oaks resident “The volunteers are surely angels who have come to lighten our loads and give a gift of love and caring to those we serve. What an example of Christian love they set.” Retiring Luther Manor employee “The way I spent my summer vacation couldn’t have been any better than working at Luther Manor. I’ve met so many nice people at Luther Manor. They all made me feel very comfortable. This won’t be the last time you’ll be seeing me, that’s for sure.” Luther Manor student volunteer ~3~ Ctomorrow reating today Board of Directors and Administration Report What an exciting time it is to be part of older-adult ministry! While the challenges and uncertainties may at times seem to demand “too much” of our time and resource use … it is still a time of hope and we know that around the corner are tomorrow’s answers. Our theme for this 2010 Annual Report, “Creating…Tomorrow…Today,” seeks to reflect the essence of Luther Manor’s 50+year heritage as we continue to share God’s love with all we meet and welcome. Our friends continue to tell us they appreciate the spirit of the Luther Manor community where lives of faith and service are lived and fulfilled everyday. Luther Manor continues to be a place where God’s love is shared, and where residents, participants, family members, volunteers and staff encounter each day with hope. As members of the Luther Manor “family community” we seek to enable and enrich each others’ life experience anew each and everyday. The Penelope Project partnership has opened new doors to the wonderful possibilities “creative engagement” brings to people and relationships. We see new opportunities and challenges as we continue to endure the effects of the 2008/2009 economic recession … inadequate Medicaid payments, depressed housing markets, uncertain occupancies, and scarcity of capital financing. Through it all, we keep focused on our Mission – Sharing God’s Love – and we celebrate God’s gifts of Grace with gratitude. We continue to take our customer, client and constituent accountabilities very seriously, and our 2010 program and fiscal results are reflected throughout this Annual Report. Together with the thousands of people stories that reflect the “Creating…Tomorrow…Today” spirit that is Luther Manor’s hallmark, our 2010 results encourage our continued planning and program growth. The 50-year dedication of our volunteers and staff is a living testimony to the legacy of love, service and hope that is our future. Sharing God’s Love also means celebrating the Home and Community-Based Service partnerships we value and enjoy with ULPA member congregations and other strategic partners, through Adult Day Services, support groups, Hospice Services, Parish Nursing, and our congregational Senior Ministry Initiative grant program. Gift income continues to warrant focused attention for both ULPA and the Luther Manor Foundation. Thanks to the philanthropy of our valued friends and donors, and the support of the Luther Manor Foundation, we are able to continue Luther Manor’s “Creating…Tomorrow…Today” legacy. No resident has ever had to leave Luther Manor solely because of his/her inability to pay the full cost of care. Each and every gift is vital to help us continue this tradition and to keep our promise to future generations. Our heritage also celebrates the gifts of our voluntary Board, Committee, Advisory Council, and Task Force members who provide the leadership and direction to our partnership ministry. They continue to be our strong foundation and legacy. Their unselfish dedication is a testimony to their commitment, and they continue to be a bright beacon, helping Luther Manor to be a family of love and a “Welcome Home” place. Together with our staff and volunteers, they provide the vital leadership necessary to ensure that we will be sharing God’s love for tomorrow’s generations. In 2010, we acknowledged with gratitude the long-time service of Board members Robert Long and Jeanne Prochnow, and we welcomed new Board members: Rev. Meredith Bedker Musaus and James Hoffman, and returning Board member, Bill Schulz. As we continue Creating Tomorrow Today and imagining the future for Luther Manor’s caring, faithful community of members and friends, we renew ourselves each and every day. We are grateful for our mission and all who work toward its fulfillment, and we continue to marvel at the opportunities our ministry of service provides. We joyfully celebrate the 50-year legacy of those who have gone before us together with our tradition of quality and innovation … and we re-invite you to actively journey with us. Ours is a future filled with hope. As we join together to welcome our new residents, participants, clients, volunteers and staff members … we embrace and claim our future with gratitude, trust, confidence, courage and hope. We continue to provide a broad spectrum of program offerings, both facilitybased and home-based services, and support of our underlying mission. Being committed to our residents, participants, volunteers and employees has compelled us to work diligently to put the pieces in place for financial viability by Creating Tomorrow Today. This year’s theme could not be more appropriate with the changing economic environment and trends in Senior Care, it is important to adapt to the changing climate. We continue to strengthen our relationships with our congregations and noted the 52nd Anniversary of the Luther Manor Auxiliary. Luther Manor received more than $53,000 of support and more than 29,000 cookies from these congregations in 2010. In addition, Luther Manor awarded grants totaling $34,800 to 16 of our partner congregations to support development of innovative senior ministry models. Luther Manor has also worked to deepen our community relationships in Wauwatosa, and the Greater Milwaukee area. Our Penelope Project partnership with UW-Milwaukee and Sojourn Theater was a flagship endeavor in 2010-2011. We believe these relationships are the foundation for the future of Luther Manor. Creating Tomorrow Today involves continuing our strong relationships with our volunteers. In 2010, more than 550 adult and teen volunteers gave more than 50,000 hours of time to serving our residents and participants with various needs and activities. These volunteers are crucial to carrying out our mission. Another part of Creating Tomorrow Today involves continuously launching new programs and service offerings. In 2010, Luther Manor successfully launched Chives American Grill which provides a restaurant style dining venue for our Terrace residents and guests. We continue to listen to our clients as we look at the products we offer and evaluate their effectiveness and utilization. Finally, Creating Tomorrow Today involves cultivating an intentional culture of doing what is right for our residents, participants, volunteers, employees and other stakeholders, who believe that Luther Manor is the culmination of sharing God’s love and valuing one another’s diversity. Creating Tomorrow Today is a fantastic theme for 2010, and an appropriate launching pad for 2011. The Penelope Project When Luther Manor agreed to host and facilitate the Penelope Project, the administration had no idea what a year-long exploration of the myth of Penelope on a senior living campus would look like. Finding out meant opening the doors of Luther Manor to a broad coalition of academics and artists; rallying staff from different levels of care around a campus-wide initiative; and finally, handing over “the keys of creativity” to the residents. It all began when Anne Basting, director of the Center on Age & Community at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and an associate professor of theatre, recognized that Homer’s Odyssey—and specifically the tale of Penelope, who fends off 108 suitors during her husband’s extended absence—has special resonance with residents of long-term care facilities, whose homes are constantly trafficked with strangers. She also suspected these residents would have a profound understanding of what it means to wait, wait and wait. And because Penelope struggles to recognize Odysseus when he at last returns home, Basting saw potential for residents with memory loss to bring meaning to bear on this classic text. The project culminated in the performance of FINDING PENELOPE, a professionally produced, site-specific, highly-interactive play, staged throughout the Luther Manor Wauwatosa campus. An Odyssey of Empowerment, An ambitious project of participatory art empowers seniors, boosts wellness and sweeps aside old notions about “activities.” ©2011, Leading Age. From the early beginnings of the United Lutheran Program for the Aging, affiliated congregations have supported this ministry through encouragement, leadership and prayers, along with the gifts of volunteer service and financial resources. Financial contributions from nearly half of our member congregations (highlighted in bold) support the growing number of community outreach ministries provided by Luther Manor, including the Parish Nurse Program, Adult Day Services and community support groups. We gratefully acknowledge those partner congregations whose gifts totaled $53,201, as well as 29,880 cookies, in 2010. The following congregations shared this vital ministry with us as partners in 2010: King of Glory, Greenfield Abiding Savior, Milwaukee Faith, Milwaukee Kingo, Shorewood First, West Allis Adoration, Greenfield Florist Avenue, Milwaukee Lake Park, Milwaukee Advent, Cedarburg Lincoln Park, Milwaukee Fox Point, Fox Point Ascension, Milwaukee Galilee, Pewaukee Ascension, Waukesha Lutheran Church of the Gethsemane, Brookfield Atonement, Muskego Living Christ, Germantown Bay Shore, Whitefish Bay Gloria Dei, Menomonee Falls Luther Memorial, West Allis Bethlehem, Muskego Good Shepherd, Milwaukee Martin Luther, Milwaukee Calvary, Brookfield Memorial, Glendale Grace, Grafton Capitol Drive, Milwaukee Mt. We provide seminars for pastors and lay leaders, consultation and financial grants to help congregations establish programs to serve seniors in their congregations, including assistance from the Pastoral Care department in meeting the needs of congregation members who live at Luther Manor, and the use of Luther Manor as a gathering place. A record 16 congregations received Senior Ministry Initiative program grants totaling $34,800 in 2010: •Ascension Lutheran Church (Milwaukee) • Ascension Lutheran Church (Waukesha) • Atonement Lutheran Church • Calvary Lutheran Church • Capitol Drive Lutheran Church • Cross Lutheran Church • Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Redeemer • Galilee Lutheran Church ~7~ Reformation, Brookfield Reformation, Milwaukee Resurrection, New Berlin Shepherd of the Hills, Hubertus St. Andrew, Waukesha St. John’s, Brookfield St. John, Grafton St. John’s, West Milwaukee St. Luke’s, Greendale St. Luke’s, Waukesha St. Mark’s, Cudahy St. Mark’s, Waukesha St. Matthew’s, Wauwatosa St. Paul’s, Milwaukee Unity, Milwaukee Wellington Park, Milwaukee Whitnall Park, Hales Corners • Gloria Dei Lutheran Church • Lake Park Lutheran Church • Memorial Lutheran Church • Mt. Ctomorrow reating today Congregational Ties During 2010, our congregational ties and relationships continued to grow. Groups from 18 congregations visited our Wauwatosa campus for meetings and retreats. In Ozaukee and Washington counties, the Lakefield Health Ministries and the Adult Day Center at St. John Lutheran Church in Grafton continue to be community resources for older adults who need social and supportive health services during daytime hours. We look forward to embracing new and expanded partnerships in our ministry in the years to come. Our Congregation Ambassador Program utilizes dedicated members of congregations to serve as links between Luther Manor and their congregations. The Ambassadors facilitate a two-way flow of information. The ultimate beneficiaries are better-informed congregation members who can be served by a stronger older adult ministry. Members interested in serving as congregation Ambassadors are invited to contact Linda Lueck at (414) 464-3880, ext. 304. Current Ambassadors include: Joyce Christie, Faith (Cedarburg); Kathy Conrad, Cross of Life; Susie Hilgart, Cross of Life; Marge Jothen, Redemption; Don and Eunice Koehler, Holy Cross; Marilyn Lange, Ascension (Milwaukee); Betty Lissack, Redemption; Betty Mattson, Abiding Savior; Marianne Martin, Redemption; Ginny Oistad, Mount Hope; Julie Pekarske, Capitol Drive; Ruth Rudolph, Pentecost-Divine Word; Joyce Heinrich, St. Matthew’s; Bob and Nancy Schrap, Mt. A Vital Link Since it was formed in 1958, the Luther Manor Auxiliary (Friends of Luther Manor, effective 2011) has continued its legacy of love to benefit Luther Manor residents and participants. During 2010, 1,797 Auxiliary members provided a vital link between our partner congregations and Luther Manor’s ministry. An Auxiliary Keyperson and Co-Worker team provides representation for Luther Manor in each partner congregation. This team recruits additional Auxiliary members and publicizes Auxiliary events and volunteer opportunities at Luther Manor. Through membership dues of $2 per year for individual members, $50 for annual sustaining memberships and $300 for lifetime memberships, the Auxiliary provides special gifts each year that directly enhance the lives of Luther Manor residents as well as those served through Luther Manor’s Home and Community-Based Service ministries, including the Parish Nurse and Adult Day Service programs. Ctomorrow reating today Recognizing gifts of legacy The Luther Manor Heritage Partner Society was established in 1997 to recognize faithful donors who include Luther Manor’s ministry in their charitable estate planning, ensuring that Luther Manor’s compassionate care and service for God’s older adults will be available in the future. Examples of such charitable estate planning include: • Remembering Luther Manor in your will. • Obtaining a charitable gift annuity that names Luther Manor as the ultimate beneficiary. • Making provisions for Luther Manor in a trust arrangement. • Naming Luther Manor as your life insurance beneficiary. • Naming Luther Manor as beneficiary of a retirement account. We gratefully acknowledge and celebrate the following members of the Heritage Partner Society whose decision to include Luther Manor (ULPA) and/or the Luther Manor Foundation in their charitable estate planning goes a long way toward ensuring the continuation of Luther Manor’s mission in the future.
