Dear Hickory Families,
What a great week at Hickory! We had a very successful Book Fair this week thanks
to your support! Last evening, we had our Family Literacy Night! There were many
great stories and activities shared in our teachers’ classrooms and many of you
attended our Parent Literacy Sessions in the cafeteria while your children enjoyed
listening to favorite stories read aloud by our teachers! Thank you so much to
everyone who attended, our teachers who hosted book stories in their classrooms, and
to our PTO Committee Chairpersons who were so instrumental in making this night a
big success! As I have visited classrooms today, I have enjoyed seeing the creativity
of our students and staff with their favorite book character costumes that they wore to
school today as a culminating activity for the week!
For those of you who were not able to attend our parent meetings last night, we talked
about our new reading series, McGraw-Hill and shared some of the resources that are
available to you online that allow you to help support your child’s literacy skills at
home. We also discussed ways that you can support your children at home to help
them develop a life-long love of reading. We are placing the PowerPoint presentation

A special invitation to all of our Dads, we are having a special morning event on
October 8th at 8:00 a.m. in our cafeteria– Doughnuts with Dad Breakfast. We invite
our Dads to attend a special breakfast and program with their Hickory children. A
special guest speaker, the father of Butler University Basketball Head Coach Brandon
Miller, will be with us to share some insight and wisdom about being a father and
about basketball during the program. Flyers are being sent home today. Please be
looking for these and return the RSVP section to us as soon as possible.
Thank you for your continued support of our school! We have such amazing children

The Avon Parent Partnership
Committee (APPC) gives a
voice to parents about academics and advises administration on issues related to
curriculum and instruction in order to ensure that Avon students’ learning
needs are continually met.
Each elementary school within ACSC has two APPC representatives that
meet monthly with the ACSC administration in order to discuss relevant
topics about the school corporation and items that are important to parents
and students. Our Hickory Elementary parent representatives for 2013 are
Julie Monroe and Jason Westfall.
We invite you to please contact our designated parent partners with any
questions, concerns or topics that you feel are important to discuss with
the APPC and the school administration. We will make every attempt to
answer your questions directly or address with the AAPC and school administration.
Our AAPC representatives may be contacted by email

with our parents. In addition, school counselors will be sharing important information about the new anti-bullying law!

Ribbon Week, we wanted to share information that would be useful to all of our
parents as we raise safe and healthy children.

IAG PARENT DAY AT THE NAGC
We know you are excited about NAGC coming to Indianapolis in November! IAG is thrilled to host Parent Day on Saturday, November 9th, which is a wonderful opportunity for Indiana families of high ability children to learn from national experts in the field. Registrants will be treated to two excellent keynote addresses from Sally M. Reis, author
of Light up your Child's Mind: Finding a Unique Pathway to Happiness and Success and principal researcher at the
National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented, and John Green, author of Time Magazine's #1 novel of
2012 The Fault in our Stars. Registrants will also have the opportunity to participate in expert-facilitated roundtable
discussions, attend national conference sessions of their choice, and browse various gifted education service vendors
for gifted curriculum, games, enrichment camps, and much more.
The price of admission, which includes lunch and an optional evening reception, is $110 for an individual and $175 for

Hickory Student Council
The newly elected Student Council members are excited to
represent their classmates and plan for a great year. The
first order of business was to brainstorm ideas for our first
dress-up day and choose a good cause for the donation. It
was decided that Friday, September 27th Hickory students
should dress up like their favorite book character to
celebrate the Scholastic Book Fair and our Family Literacy
Night. Donations received from our dress up day will go
towards the Hickory Field Trip Fund to cover costs for those
in need. Thank you for your support!

Avon Education Foundation awards
$1265.98 to Avon teachers.
Congratulations to all six AEF " Fast Track"
grant recipients. Fast Track grants are for
classroom supplies or educational program support of less than $250 and constitute the first
round of grants approved by the Avon Education Foundation
(AEF) during each semester. Second round "traditional" grants
may be for as much as $3000 per applicant and are currently
under review by the AEF grants committee. Certified staff in all
12 schools may apply. In some cases, one award winner is
reported but multiple buildings benefit. For example, Maple
Elementary's Ms. Samide is listed, but books purchased for the
new Parent Book Club may benefit all elementary schools and
parents who join the book club. Pictured here is Mr. Leake
(Maple Elementary) with his students, just after telling them
about the great books that would be purchased for them using
AEF grant money. They were so excited they stood up and
clapped! Other grant winners include Avon High School's Mr.
Osterman, Ms. Garland and Mrs. Rohrbach and AIS East's Ms.
Fluharty.
AEF connects private support to public education needs in the
Avon community and is unique as the only non-profit
(501c3) organization supporting academic needs in all 12 of
Avon's public schools. This is only possible through taxdeductible donations to AEF. Last year the Avon Education
Foundation provided $66,257 in grant and educational support
to Avon schools. However, due to budget cuts, requests for
assistance are already up this year which means meeting those
needs, requests, and goals will only be possible with the help of
others. Tax-deductible donations to AEF are always welcome
at 7203 E. US Hwy 36, Avon IN, 46123, are much appreciated, and will benefit literally thousands of Avon's public school
children. Thank you!

On Friday, October 11, the Avon Education Foundation (AEF) will hold its annual
Freaky Friday fundraiser to support education programs in all twelve of Avon’s schools.
On this day, all students (and staff!) can donate $1.00 and dress in their craziest school-appropriate attire.
So, go ahead and wear mismatched socks, that crazy shirt your great-aunt bought for your birthday, or even
ask to raid your parents’ closet for their freaky clothes from the 80’s. On Freaky Friday, anything goes and it
all goes for a good cause!
