Centre Profile 2013
Campus Accommodation. Ages: 11 - 15
Location
Kilkenny, 128km from Dublin, has a population of over 20,000 and is known as Ireland’s
medieval capital. It offers a selection of historical sites and buildings dating from the 7th
century. Its famous landmark is Kilkenny Castle, former home of the Butler family - the
Earls of Ormonde. Kilkenny has long been a national centre for crafts and design.
About the College
Kilkenny College is only a 10 minute walk from the town centre. It is the newest boarding
school in Ireland, and offers a full range of modern indoor and outdoor sports facilities.
Accommodation
Accommodation is provided in a number of student houses on campus. The students are
divided into male and females houses. Each student house provides a combination of 2, 3
and 4 bedded rooms. Shower and toilet facilities are located beside the rooms.
Students attending Kilkenny College can also choose to stay with a host family. All the
families are inspected and carefully selected by our Accommodation Officer.
Accommodation is arranged on a full board basis. Students staying with host families
share a room with a student of similar age and different nationality where possible.
Classrooms
Each lesson is 45 minutes in duration and the standard programme for junior students is
15 hours per week. Classes are available at all levels from Elementary (A1) to Advanced
(C1). Classes for junior students will have a maximum of 15 students, but you can expect
an average of 13 students per class. Class times are divided so that students receive
lessons from more than one teacher, two per day allowing them the benefit of more than
one voice and teaching style and having a team of teachers liaise on their learning paths. A
variety of classroom layouts suits different learning styles. There are numerous
comfortable modern, spacious classrooms available in the college.
Sport & Recreational Facilities
Sports facilities include a large gymnasium where students play basketball, volleyball, indoor
football and badminton. There are 16 tennis courts as well as numerous playing fields where
students can participate in rounder's, soccer, uni-hoc, and many other outdoor pursuits.
Activities and Excursions
The programme in Kilkenny College offers a very comprehensive cultural, sports and evening
programme. Included are two half day cultural excursions to local galleries, museums and
other visitor attractions and one full day excursion per week to cities and places of cultural
importance around Ireland. The activity programme provides young students with an
opportunity to absorb some of Ireland’s rich heritage in a fun and relaxed way.
A residential evening activity programme rounds off each day and includes: discos, Irish Nights
(Ceili), karaoke, talent nights, treasure hunts and activities such as sport tournaments, Mr. an
Mrs. competition and casino night and will ensure that each student is busy from breakfast to
bedtime. Please see the sample programme for details.
