Everyday Poetry
Saturday, June 11, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon
INSTRUCTOR: Michelle Watters
This class is for those who have always wanted to write
poetry or are just starting to explore poetry but need
more guidance. Poetry is around us every day in the
small things. Sometimes all that is needed to start writing
is a little inspiration and some like-minded folks. In a
three hour workshop we will explore different styles of
poetry that help inspire beginning poets such as the list
poem and the confessional poem. One hour will be devoted to an introduction to poetry and will be an informal
reading of classic and modern poets with discussion. The
next hour will be devoted to writing. We will warm up by
writing a group poem and then move into independent
writing. Participants can choose a style learned in the
instruction hour or write free form. In the final hour of the
workshop participants can choose to read their poetry out
loud and receive constructive feedback from the class or
have a short private editing session with the instructor.
MAXIMUM NUMBER OF STUDENTS: 15
STUDENT AGES: 18 and up
LOCATION: North Hero Methodist Church, downstairs
meeting room (entrance and parking are in back of

Jorge Garcia Herranz
Concert and
Summer Island Tango
Thursday, August 11 - 8:00 p.m. Concert
9:30 p.m. Tango Dance/Milonga
North Hero Community Hall
Tickets: $20 in advance, $25 at the door, Canadian $ at
par
This Spanish-born pianist began his musical studies in
Madrid, where he learned to love Spanish composers
such Albeniz, Granados, and Falla, whose music he
regularly includes in his concerts. He also developed a
keen interest for Spanish popular music, which eventually
led him to discover popular music from around the
world. Indeed, he has been working for the last ten
years on various tango projects and has recently
released a CD featuring Astor Piazzolla's music.
In his 20s, he moved to Paris to continue his musical
studies and to take advantage of the city's vibrant cultural
life. Improvising and drawing upon his knowledge of
diverse musical genres is a great pleasure for him. He
often accompanies silent movies, working to find the
musical style of each film. He has set music to some of
the greatest silent movies, such Metropolis, Nosferatu,
and Faust. Paris has been the scene for many of his
musical projects, such as the series of the complete
Beethoven sonatas for piano as well as Mozart's sonatas
for violin and piano. Jorge enjoys performing entire
series. He has presented a series of seven Chopin
recitals and is currently working on a series of Schubert's
sonatas. He is part-way through his greatest project,
which is to perform all of Bach's music for clavier.
Jorge will be performing an all tango concert from 8 9:30 pm. It will be followed by a Milonga (tango dance)
from 9:30 until midnight. Come join us for an all tango
night!
Tickets can be purchased in advance for $20 or at the
door for $25. Please see page 4, Concert Tickets, for
advance purchase sites. Canadian currency will be
taken at par for this special event.

Summer Meets Fall and
Birds are Everywhere
Lecture Thursday August 25, 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Field Trip Saturday August 27, 7:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.
INSTRUCTOR: Maeve Kim
Many Vermont birders call mid
August
"Convergence
Time"
because we can see more species
at that time than any other time of
the year. Most of the birds that nested and raised young in Vermont
have not left yet and many birds
that have nested farther north are
beginning to come through the
state on their fall migrations.
During the lecture portion of this class, we'll learn
about the amazing phenomenon that is migration and
talk about birds that will stick around for winter, those
that will leave Vermont for warmer areas, and those
that will come to Vermont for the winter.
For our field trip, we'll visit Mud Creek Wildlife
Management Area in Alburgh.
LOCATION: Lecture - Lake Champlain Basin Program,
54 West Shore Road, Grand Isle

PossumHaw Concert
Sunday, August 28 - 6:30 p.m.
Grounds open at 5:30 p.m. for picnicking
Grand Isle Lake House (Rain or shine)
Tickets: $20 in advance, $25 at the door, ages 12 and

PossumHaw is delighted to return to the Grand Isle
Lake House for a second year. Last year the group
brought their unique combination of original bluegrass
instrumentation and folk lyricism, delivered by one of
the finest female vocalists in the region. This year
PossumHaw will be bringing exciting new material to
the show, continuing to showcase their love of bluegrass and folk traditions infused with their own writing
and arrangement style.
Jazz and blues influences weave through a repertoire
of original music fueled by Colby Crehan's skilled songwriting. Crehan's song "Road to Mora" was named
Vermont Song of the Year, and Crehan was named
Vermont Vocalist of the Year (Tammie Awards, TimesArgus).

WITH ISLAND ARTS GALLERIES:
The Merchants Bank, South Hero
Island Arts Gallery in the Merchants Bank/Old South Hero
Inn in South Hero, VT, has been serving the community
since the partnership was formed between Island Arts
and Merchants Bank in 1996 shortly after the bank
purchased and preserved the historic South Hero Inn for
public access. The gallery is located in the old dining
room of the Inn and gives gallery visitors both the pleasure
of viewing regional art and also a historic building that is
very much a cornerstone of Island heritage dating back
to the 18th century when stagecoach business frequented
the Inn en route between Boston and Montreal and all
points in between. Today the gallery gives regional artists,
working in many mediums, the opportunity to show and
sell their work while at the same time enriching our Island
communities with local artists—both new and

The Lake Champlain Access
Television (LCATV) in Colchester
Lake Champlain Access Television, located at 63 Creek
Farm Plaza in Colchester, under the leadership of
Executive Director Kevin Christopher, has recently
provided gallery space for area artists to showcase their
work. For more information contact Paula Bradley at
paintedpanes@aol.com or Kevin Christopher at 802-8625724.
The Welcome Center of Alburgh
The Welcome Center of Alburgh has partnered with
Island Arts of Grand Isle County, and welcomed local
artists and artisans to display their work at the center.
Coming from New York State, this is one of the first
places a visitor might stop. It is a large, open room which
provides great space to view a representation of the
many art forms, different mediums and various colors
and ways our artists express their talents and interests.
The Border Press
For over ten years, Island Arts and The Border Press have
worked as partners to produce yearly brochures,
pamphlets, letterheads and even enjoyed a beautiful
collaboration on a regional northern artists' book.
With the 5 Grand Isle County
Schools
The success of the Alburgh School Band program
inspired us to expand it to the other 4 Grand Isle County
schools. Grants received from the Vermont Arts Council
have encouraged elementary and middle school
students in all 5 schools to play in the school band by
assisting their families with the cost of instrument
rentals.
Island Arts sponsors the County Music Fest, a grant
program with a goal of enriching and extending the
school arts curriculum. Art, music, and drama teachers
who wish to expand their students' artistic horizons are
contacted and funds are used for concerts, stage
productions, artists-in-residence, music/art field
trips and other events on a district-wide, multi-school,
multi-grade basis. Monies for the grants and scholarships come from all the people who attend concerts and
many generous friends. Once bills are paid, monies
remaining directly benefit Island children who participate
in these events. For over 17 years ArtsBoost has also
provided funding for the ongoing Island Arts and
Bhutanese cultural exchange program (see page 27).

Our Creative
Partnerships
With Island Arts Jazz Combo
It can be a very long drive from the Champlain Islands
to Burlington. But if they can make the long trek, there
are many great arts programs Island kids can be part
of. Now, Island Arts has made this participation easier
by offering a satellite of the well-known Flynn Arts
Program in Grand Isle. Anyone can participate in
two 12 week sessions as part of the Flynn Arts
Program, through the Flynn Theater. Participants will find
themselves performing at the premier performance
venue--The Flynn Theater. Plus, they may also be
performing at the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival. A
musical instrument, at least one year of playing
experience and a willingness to experiment is all that
is needed. Tony Pietricola, Island Arts' Jazz Combo
instructor, will make improvisation easy and fun for
anyone who tries it. The good part is that all rehearsals
take place in Grand Isle. So consider becoming a
member or continuing on as a member of The Island
Arts' Jazz Combo with director Tony Pietricola. Contact
Tony Pietricola by phone 802-372-5363 or email:
tonyvje@gmail.com for more information.
With the Champlain Islanders
Developing Essential
Resources (CIDER)
Island Arts has worked closely with CIDER for many
years on exchange of marketing and the study of buses
to carry school children.
With Vermont’s Finest
Crafters and Artists
With the Flynn Center for
Performing Arts
Though a road links Grand Isle County to the
mainland, the islands are still a fairly rural and remote
area. As a result, some students live as much as an
hour away from Burlington, VT, where many worthwhile arts activities are offered to kids. A few years
ago, we approached the Flynn Theater Education
Department about forming a partnership to allow
Island kids to take FlynnArts courses locally (on the
Islands) and perform with children from the
greater Burlington area at joint performances. The
instructor is Tony Pietricola who teaches regular
events at the Flynn Theater and in the Island Arts
Academy. Thus was born the Island Arts/Flynn Arts
Satellite program. During the first years of this
endeavor, Island children participated in a Jazz
Combo, the same as those children from the greater
Burlington area. Now the rehearsals, instead of being
an hour’s drive for some, are held at Grand Isle School
making rehearsals more accessible. When it comes
time to perform, the participants do travel to
Burlington to play in the city's premiere performance
space, the Flynn Theater.
With Village Players
A new partnership this year, Island Arts has partnered
with Village Players for the musical production of
"Barnum" which will be performed at the Island Arts
Barn located at 1127 US Route 2 in North Hero, 1.2
miles north of the drawbridge. The play will be
performed on August 19th and 20th at 8 p.m. and on
August 21st at 2 p.m.
Celebrate the collaboration between Island Arts and
Vermont's finest crafters and artists featuring a
juried craft show exhibited in the beautiful setting
of North Hero village, in the restored and air
c o n ditioned North Hero Community Hall. Contact
Sue Alenick at 802-863-5723. This year Friday and
Saturday, August 5 & 6 from 10 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Admission is FREE.
With the Preservation Trust
of Vermont
For over a decade, Island Arts and The Preservation
Trust of Vermont have worked together to offer the
best in music, theater and dance at The Grand Isle Lake
House. Through their provision of strong support and a
wonderful venue for Island Arts' events, the
Preservation Trust has made it possible for the people
of this area and beyond to enjoy high quality performances at The Grand Isle Lake House, a most beautiful
and historic site in the Lake Champlain Islands.

Global Cultural Awareness Programs

Around the World in
45 Minutes
Liv
The Bhutan-Grand Isle connection started with a penpal conversation over 15
years ago when Khenpo Phuntsok
Tashi, Director of the National
Museum in Bhutan spoke in the
schools and started a meditation
group still active in the community.
This connection has flourished and
evolved into a cultural and artistic
exchange between the five Grand Isle
County elementary schools and three w
i
Bhutanese schools. The goal of this n h
ongoing program is to encourage Grand Isle armo
ny,
County children and their families to learn about
Bhutan and to establish personal connections with
people who live in another country very different from
our own, an increasingly important awareness in
today’s world.

In 2010, Island Arts and the Grand Isle Supervisory
Union Schools began an exciting new art and cultural
exchange program. Katya Wilcox, president of Island
Arts, initiated this program by delivering artwork created
by students in the Grand Isle County Schools to the
teachers and students in several Bhutanese schools. In
exchange, she brought artwork from the Bhutanese
children when she returned home. The theme of the
student art was “Gross National Happiness,” to highlight what makes each child happy in his or her own
life.
To help supplement your geography and
world knowledge curriculums, Island
Arts offers 15-minute videos from
around the world, filmed and written
by Lyn Jarvis, former WCAX-TV's
Across the Fence Producer. You and
your students can visit Greece,
Turkey, Russia, Africa, Norway, Costa
Rica, China, the Amazon Basin of South
America, Antarctica, France, the
Galapagos Islands, Ireland, Scotland,

Vermont Cultural
Exchange:
The videos, in standard DVD format, are not political in
nature; they highlight the best of what each country has
to offer. Lyn and video editor, Marco Ayala, are available
to bring these shows to your school for a 45-minute
presentation. All you need is a television set equipped to
play the DVDs. To schedule a visit to your school, call Lyn
at 372-9333 or e-mail at vtjarvis@comcast.net.
Since 2010 we have been studying a web-based
technology to facilitate live internet conversations
and a photo gallery where children and teachers from
both countries can share information about life, social
customs, and traditions in their own unique regions of
the world.
A trip to Bhutan was organized in April 2014 to video
tape the artwork of the Bhutanese children, their teachers,
culture and country. Through this program, the Gross
National Happiness movement that began in Bhutan
over 25 years ago is now spreading throughout
Vermont. Our visionary collaboration is proof of the
worthiness of this idea and has enriched the lives of
hundreds of school children, their teachers, and their
families both here in the Islands and half-way around
the world in Bhutan. Contact Katya at (802) 372-8889 to
join in the exchange.

Josiah Vincent, violinist, was awarded the JoAnn Champagne Scholarship. This $1,000 award was donated by Bill
Champagne in memory of his wife JoAnne, who was a generous creative spirit supporting the arts in Grand Isle County
with enthusiasm and profound dedication.
Justin Sharp, drummer, received the Larry McCrorey Jazz Scholarship.
Caroline Prefontaine was awarded the Priscilla Rose Scholarship. This award was donated by Bob Foley in memory of
his wife Priscilla Rose, a fervent and passionate supporter of the arts in general, and a generous fundraiser for Island Arts

Caroline Prefontaine with Bob Foley
In loving memory of
At Island Arts very beginning Ernie, with great
patience, helped us through the process of
incorporating into a 501(c)(3) organization.
She was our treasurer for countless years and when it
became difficult for her to join our
meetings at night, she took upon herself the duty of
thanking each donor with a handwritten note and a
non-profit donation receipt.
Ernie called a spade a spade and her advice was
always welcome. She loved Jazz, good times at
Biddle's in Montreal and all forms of dancing.
Most of all she had a fantastic sense of humor, and
that is what we all miss right now.
