food and beverage vendors (most open at 4 p.m.),
musical entertainment and awe-inspiring aerobatic
performances. Inflatable fun in several varieties will be
available. Accessible parking and shuttle service available.

About Amelia Earhart
This year marks the 112th anniversary of Amelia Earhart’s birthday
and the 81st anniversary of her being the first woman to fly across the
Atlantic. She was born July 24, 1897 in her grandparents’ Atchison home
at 223 N. Terrace. On June 1, 1937, Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan
departed from Miami to attempt a circumnavigational flight. They made
stops in South America, Africa, the Indian subcontinent and Southeast
Asia. With just 7,000 miles left to complete their journey, they vanished
over the Pacific Ocean on July 2, 1937, becoming one of the great
mysteries of our time.

a $1 donation at the Chamber of Commerce,
200 S. 10th, and at most bank locations
in Atchison. Your purchase helps support
the spectacular fireworks that are
enjoyed for free by thousands of
spectators. A limited number of buttons
from past festivals are available at the
Visitors Center in the restored Santa Fe
Depot, 200 S. 10th.

Accessible parking / free shuttle service available from 5 to 11 p.m.
Park at Atchison Elementary School, 825 N. 17th, and shuttle to
a tented area near 2nd & Main streets. Individuals with limited
mobility also can be dropped off at 2nd & Main streets. Bring your
own seating. No coolers permitted on shuttle bus.

Rodney Atkins, an artist known for his honest
delivery and humble beginnings, will headline
LakeFest 2009, on Friday, July 17. Atkins’ platinumselling 2006 album If You’re Going Though Hell
produced an astonishing four No. 1 hits, including
the Billboard Most Played Song of 2006 and 2007.
His new release, It’s America, is already earning
rave reviews.
The 2009 Pioneering Achievement Award
recipient is United States Air Force Maj. Nicole M.
Malachowski. Nicole is most widely known as the
first female pilot on any U.S. military flight
demonstration team – the Air Force Thunderbirds.
After graduating from the Air Force Academy in
1996, she received her commission. Nicole has
served as a mission ready pilot in three F-15E
fighter squadrons, holding positions as Flight
Commander and Instructor Pilot. She has flown homeland defense
missions as part of Operation Noble Eagle and has logged more than 185
hours of combat time in Operation Deliberate Forge and Operation Iraqi
Freedom. During that time, Nicole provided first fighter air cover for the
first Iraqi free elections in 30 years and coordinated 600 personnel and 26
aircraft in the celebration of 60th anniversary of D-Day. Nicole recently
served on the Presidential Transition Support team and is currently participating in the prestigious White House Fellows program for leadership and
public service. Among her many awards, Nicole has received the Meritorious Service Medal and the Air Medal. She has also coordinated volunteer
activities at every stop in her career, both at home and abroad.
