Edison Yeung, Phoenix Palace owner, opened the doors last year to his new restaurant, but had cooked at the same location before when it was known as Kylin Express. Yeung, who partnered with his brother, closed down Kylin Express a few years ago because his brother wanted out of the business. So, Yeung took another job in the area cooking Chinese food while their old restaurant went under new ownership and was known as China King. However, Yeung had a following of loyal customers who wanted him back preparing cuisine along Chautauqua Avenue. ''People would tell me I should come back,'' he said. ''That was a surprise. The uproar of support for how Yeung prepared Chinese food was coming, coincidentally, at the same time Yeung was thinking about leaving the area. But because of the support, he decided to take a chance and stake his own claim as owner of a restaurant. ''I wouldn't be here right now if it wasn't for my customers' support,'' he said. ''That is why I came back to open my own restaurant by myself.'' The restaurateur said the support has been overwhelming. ''It made me feel like I was in my hometown. Now here feels like home,'' he said. ''I want people to know I will do my best. I really thank my Lakewood and Jamestown customers.'' Yeung said he has been cooking for over 10 years and has always had a passion for cooking since he was young. ''Yeah, I really like it,'' he said. ''I do everything myself. I'm the cook and manager.'' The restaurant, located at 112 Chautauqua Ave in Lakewood, is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Each year The Crafts Alliance honors two Exhibitors, one from each show, with the ʻAward for Excellenceʼ. The Award recognizes the Professional quality of the Artists application materials, the outstanding design and craftsmanship in their work and the effective presentation of the work in their booth. 2011 Award Winner Valerie Bunnell will be returning to exhibit in the August 2012 Show. Valerie is only one of many of our Exhibitors who have fascinating stories to tell about the world of crafts art. Valerie has been fortunate enough to let happenstance direct her life toward her love of clay. She graduated from college in 1978 with a practical degree in nutrition, but when she landed her first job in Farmingdale, N.Y., she gravitated toward the nearby Willow Pond ceramics workshop. She ended up shortening her work hours to focus on clay. Soon after, visiting a craft fair during a Vermont camping trip, she met ceramist Bobbie Groves. Interviewed on the spot, Bunnell went to work for Groves at Earth & Sun in Halifax, Vt. For the next five years she learned firsthand how to live and work as a self-employed artist. Her next move was to Burlington, Vt., where she began working for potter George Satchard, learning more about throwing, production and persistence. It wasnʼt until Bunnell turned 30 that she realized she had to become serious about her own career. She then went back to school. She enrolled in The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she had the opportunity to explore other materials and began incorporating metal and wood into her clay sculptures. She graduated with a masterʼs in ceramics in 1990. Part marionette, part automaton, Bunnellʼs mixed-media sculptures explore the human condition. The doll may begin as a sketch or simply present itself as an idea. To make each piece, she shapes white earthenware and then stamps, carves and textures each section of the form. She stains the surfaces of each piece and then rubs it away to reveal a fossilized look. After glazing and firing, she assembles the RV SERVICE, PARTS & REPAIRS H OFFMAN HOFFMAN C O . Ultimately, the viewer completes the doll by animating it and imagining another reality or history. Riding Stable Darlene Breads and Douglas Bowen founded Double D.A.B. Riding Stable in 1982. The stable was created, and continues to operate, based on a passion for horses and love of nature. The stable is still owned and operated by Darlene and Douglas, as well as their daughter, Chelsey. At the stable, you will find a farmlike environment with a menagerie of animals including horses, donkeys, goats, llamas, dogs, cats, geese, and even a pot-bellied pig. Most of the horses at Double D.A.B. Riding Stable were born and raised at the stable, and all of them were trained here. Double D.A.B. Riding Stable offers many activities centered on the horses. The stable gives 20 guided trail rides, pony rides, riding lessons, summer day camps, and a petting farm. The scenic trail rides are the most popular attraction. Guides take customers on horseback rides through miles of scenic, wooded trails. The beautiful trails include streams, gently rolling hills, fields of wildflowers, and a chance to see some local wildlife. The rides are geared towards people looking to spend some leisurely time on horseback and with nature. In 1927, Ford Cadwell began making his full cream dairy cheese in a small block building on the family farm. The vat that once held 400 gallons of milk still sits in the shop. About ten 30 pound wheels of cheese were produced daily until 1947. Milk from the night milking and the next morning came from about 135 head of Holstein cows. Because Chautauqua County winters can be harsh, the factory could operate only seasonally. The cattle would be “dried off” then by spring they would bear calves and milking and cheese making would start up again. The barn behind the factory is a remarkable 174 feet long and today sports a snappy red metal roof. The first section of the barn is believed to been built in the 1850ʼs. Ford Cadwellʼs cheese making craft went back to his grandparents. His motherʼs father had his factory in Maple Springs. The paternal grandfather made his cheese in Dewittville. Unfortunately, by the time 22-year-old Ford Cadwell began his craft, he said that they had “taken the recipes with them!” Because most small villages in the county had a cheese factory, he learned much from visiting them. 2012 becomes the 85th season for The Cheese House. Recently a customer introduced her granddaughter as the fifth generation. She had come to the factory as a child with her grandmother. There are many ways to make contact and to keep contact with your departed loved ones. In this workshop you will connect with your personal Spirit Guide and learn how that guide can bring you together with those who have passed on to the Spirit World. You will learn what goes on at a typical seance and how a group seance differs from a one-on-one 39 reading with a medium. You will learn of trumpets, apports, levitation, materializations, and more. The Spiritualist movement has led to such off-shoots as the proliferation of “ghost hunters” found today, the popularity of psychic fairs, and a variety of television personalities who claim to “talk to the dead”. Learn how these things are possible at this fascinating workshop.(See our ad on pages 9, 15, 16, 22, 23 & 24) Hectors PowersportsBack in 1964 Hector Mareri and Charlie Scholeno were partners in the used car business.
