Steele signed legislation establishing an Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College (OAMC) in Payne County. OAMC’s first students assembled for class on December 14, 1891, even though there were no buildings, no books, and no curriculum. The college’s first students attended classes in the Stillwater Congregational Church. The original campus consisted of 200 acres of prairie that were donated by four local homesteaders. The college’s first six graduates received their diplomas in 1896. Visitors to the OSU campus often marvel at its beauty and consistency of architecture. Much of the credit goes to legendary president, Henry G. Bennett, who served from 1928-1951. Dr. Bennett’s 25-year campus master plan envisioned some of the university’s most famous and beautiful structures, including the Edmon Low Library and the OSU Student Union. A new campus master plan is guiding unprecedented construction that is making OSU more competitive in academics and athletics. Starting in the fall of 2008, OSU has opened the new Multimodal Transportation Terminal, the new North Classroom Building, the west end zone of Boone Pickens Stadium, refurbished Old Central, the Donald W. Reynolds Architecture Building, an upgraded Murray Hall, the new Henry Bellmon Research Center, an updated and expanded Student Union, the Greenwood Tennis Center, and the innovative University Commons residential complex. Hall of Fame Avenue on the north and University Avenue on the south, as well as core north-south artery Monroe Street, have all been significantly upgraded, and the university continues to update its campus landscape plan. OSU grew quite rapidly following World War II. The post-war years were marked by a huge enrollment surge. Some graduates from that era may remember “Veteran’s Village,” a thriving community that developed on the northwest edge of campus as veterans and their families moved into surplus military housing provided by the college. The mid-1940s also were a golden era for athletics at Oklahoma A&M. In a 90-day period in early 1945, OAMC teams won the Cotton Bowl, the NCAA championship in wrestling, and the NCAA championship in basketball. The next year, the wrestling and basketball teams repeated as national champions, and the football team won the Sugar Bowl. Coaches and players from that era are now sports legends. Coach Henry Iba set a national standard in basketball and Edward Gallagher took OAMC wrestling teams to international prominence. People often ask when OSU made the transition from college to university. By the 1950s the college had grown substantially. Suggested names for a “new” institution were “Great Plains University,” “International University,” and “Atomic University.” In 1957, OAMC became The Oklahoma State University for Agriculture and Applied Science. During the next three decades, OSU would build academic programs to match its new status. Enrollment more than doubled from 10,385 in 1957 to more than 23,000 in the 1980s. OSU became a statewide university system, adding branches in Okmulgee in 1946 and Oklahoma City in 1961. OSU merged with the Oklahoma College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1988, and OSU-Tulsa was born in 1999. Today, OSU has more than 35,000 students across five campuses and a presence in every Oklahoma county through its extension offices and experiment stations. From six graduates in 1896, to nearly 5,000 annually today, the small college on the prairie has grown and prospered far beyond the dreams of its founders. OSU teaching, research and graduates are making a bigger impact on the lives of people around the world than ever before. It’s a great time to be a Cowboy! Niblack, PhD Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters John F. Niblack, Ph.D., retired from Pfizer Inc in September, 2002, where he was Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the company, and President, Pfizer Global Research and Development. His career at Pfizer spanned 35 years, and almost every aspect of R&D operations. As President of Pfizer’s Global Research and Development division, and its principal scientific officer, Dr. Niblack managed the largest pharmaceutical research force in the world industry, with 12,000 researchers operating on an annual research budget of over $5 billion. During Dr. Niblack’s tenure, Pfizer Global Research and Development was the largest, privately-funded biomedical research organization in the world, with activities spanning research across almost every area of medical need, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, mental illness, infectious disease, and metabolic disorders. Products introduced under Dr. Niblack’s direction included Norvasc(anti-hypertensive), Zithromax (antibiotic), Zoloft (antidepression), Diflucan (anti-fungal), and Viagra; all became multi-billion dollar products. Dr. Niblack was also responsible for external product Licensing and Development operations of the corporation, and for a time was responsible for Pfizer’s Animal Health division. Dr. Niblack earned a B.S. Degree in chemistry from Oklahoma State University in l960, and received his M.S. and Ph.D. Degrees in biochemistry from the University of Illinois in l968. Author and co-author of numerous scientific publications, Dr. Niblack was active during his career on a number of editorial boards and professional societies. In 1999, he received the Mayor of New York’s Award for Excellence in Science and Technology, and was named Research Director of the Year by the Financial Times of London. Dr. Niblack and his wife Heidi apportion their time in retirement between New York, Palm Beach, Florida, and Lyme, Connecticut, where they are active in community and philanthropic activities. In retirement, Dr. Niblack has also served as a consultant and board member for companies involved in biopharmaceutical research, development, and investment. He has also been active on the boards of a number of not-for-profit organizations, to include the New York Academy of Sciences, Connecticut College, the Florence Griswold Museum of Old Lyme, Connecticut, the Norton Museum of Art in Palm Beach, Florida, and the South Florida Science Museum. 11 Honorary Degree Recipient and Commencement Speaker Bill Goldston - Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts Bill Goldston was born in Hatch, New Mexico, in 1943. He grew up on a farm in Southern Oklahoma and graduated from Lindsay High School in 1963. He attended Oklahoma State University and received his BFA in 1966. Upon graduation, he continued his art education by attending the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. In September of 1967, he was drafted into the US Army and completed two years serving as a commercial printer, and returned to the University in 1969. Zigmunds Priede, his printmaking instructor and a former printer at Universal Limited Art Editions (U.L.A.E.), asked if he would accompany him to work the summer of 1969 at U.L.A.E. Bill continued to fly back and forth between New York and Minnesota until he finished his M.F.A. degree. By the end of January 1971, he moved his family to Long Island and, along with the intaglio printer Don Steward, began working full time for ULAE. Bill quickly moved into a leadership position. At times he compares the running of the studio to that of the evolution of a painting, “It goes in a direction and you simply follow it and tomorrow is a different day.” By the 1980s, Bill was familiar with all aspects of the business and was ready to return to the initial spirit of the studio. He purchased different and larger presses and established two additional off-site workshops, one primarily for intaglio near the house on Skidmore Place and the other in the TriBeCa section of Manhattan. The latter gave the artists with young children the flexibility to work unusual hours and remain close to home. By 1995, their children were old enough to be left at school for the day and the artists chose to return to the studios on Long Island. The TriBeCa studio was closed, and a 7000 square foot multipurpose studio was opened less than three miles from Skidmore Place. Today, everything from lithography, intaglio, and silkscreen, to the building of crates, goes on at the building the employees call “Clinton.” In guiding ULAE’s expansion, Bill has maintained the sense of community and spirit always associated with the house on Skidmore Place. Only one artist is scheduled to visit the studio on a given day. That artist and between five to seven printers, additional ULAE staff, interns, and visiting collectors, writers, or curators, are served a traditional family-style lunch. Business is still conducted at one end of the house while prints are stored and shown upstairs in a small attic room. The center of the house holds rows of worn lithographic stones and a handfed transfer press that Grosman had installed in the late 1950s. All of this is essential to the business’ success and all of it is part of history. 12 Honorary Degree Recipient Walt Garrison - Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Walt Garrison grew up in Lewisville, Texas, in a family of modest means. Working the midnight shift at the American Nut Company factory by packaging commodity peanut butter for welfare programs and servicemen, Walt was earning money to help support himself as well as his family. Well liked by his supervisor and owner, he needed financial assistance to attend college. Through the help of his supervisor’s brother, he was awarded a scholarship to attend OSU and play football. OSU’s willingness to provide support to a young man from Texas has meant so much to Walt Garrison that he has always supported OSU and their activities in whatever way possible. Enrolling at OSU in 1962 and majoring in Animal Husbandry with a Pre-Veterinary medicine emphasis, he was a model student. Although a significant amount of his time was devoted to football, he was an excellent student and a role model for many of the students enrolled in the College of Agriculture at OSU. Because of his stellar football career at OSU, Walt was selected to play in numerous all-star games at the end of the 1965 season, including the East-West Shrine game, the Senior Bowl, the Coaches AllAmerican game and the College All-Star game. Entering the National Football League draft in 1966, Walt Garrison was selected by “America’s Team”, the Dallas Cowboys. Although he had not completed his university degree, the opportunity to pursue a professional football career with his favorite and hometown team was too much to turn down. Nevertheless, Walt returned to OSU in the spring of 1967 to complete additional classes toward his degree. Few professional players return to the university to continue their education after entering professional sports, but OSU meant so much to Walt Garrison that he completed another semester of course work. After the spring 1967 semester, Walt returned to Dallas to continue his professional football career that spanned from 1966 to 1974. During his Dallas Cowboys career, Walt played in two Super Bowls, winning the 1971 Super Bowl Championship and was named to two NFL Pro Bowl Teams. Walt Garrison has been honored by election to the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame, the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame, and the Oklahoma State Hall of Honor. In 2011, Walt Garrison was honored with the Ben Johnson Award by the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. After retirement from the National Football League, Walt became a promotional star for the American Tobacco Company for over 30 years. His down home, country personality was magnetic to many throughout the nation. Today, he is able to utilize his celebrity status and his gregarious personality to participate in and/or host many charitable fundraising events benefiting charity organizations in the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex and throughout the nation. Always a major supporter of rodeo, he continues in the sport of rodeo and utilizes his talents to support the University Rodeo Team of OSU. 13 GRADUATE CANDIDATES FALL 2015 •••••• Graduate College Sheryl Tucker, Dean Doctor of Education David Herschel Bennett • Applied Educational Studies Mallory Kaye Casebolt • Applied Educational Studies Penny J. Final action to ensure an accurate listing of names of all persons qualified for degrees could not be compiled before this program went to print. The listing of a name in this program should not be construed as an indication that the person will in fact receive a fall 2015 degree from Oklahoma State University at this commencement. Conversely, the absence of a student’s name from this list does not necessarily mean the person will not be awarded a degree. Final certification of degree and academic distinction will be made by the Colleges and the Registrar after candidates have completed all degree requirements. During the Middle Ages, scholars at the earliest English and European universities wore wool or fur garments to stay warm in the drafty, stone buildings that were poorly heated. Most of the scholars were also monks or priests, and as such had the hair shaved from the crowns of their heads in the distinctive clerical tonsure. Most wore cloaks that included a hood that could be pulled up to keep their heads warm. The academic gowns and hoods were adapted from both secular and clerical garments of the time, and the hood was chosen by the early scholars to indicate by color, trim or binding the degree held by the wearer. The style of academic dress most frequently worn in the United States dates back to colonial times, although it was not formally adopted until near the end of the 19th Century, when it was chosen as appropriate attire by the Intercollegiate Commission during a meeting in New York. It has remained the general standard in America since, although some variations occur at individual institutions. In the United States, black is the traditional color for academic gowns, although some institutions allow holders of doctoral degrees to wear robes in the university’s colors. The sleeves of the robes vary, depending on the degree held by the wearer. The bachelor’s robe has long, pointed sleeves. The master’s robe has sleeves that are oblong and closed at the ends, with slits through which the arms may be extended. The doctoral robe has a full sleeve with a velvet facing on the front and at the neck, and three velvet bars on each sleeve. The velvet may be black or of a color that symbolizes the degree held by the wearer. The head covering most commonly used in the United States is the square, tasseled “mortarboard.” Some American universities, however, use berets, and in other countries a variety of styles of head coverings is worn with academic regalia. The tassel is usually black and is worn over the left front quarter of the mortarboard. Holders of doctoral degrees may wear gold tassels. The hood is the most distinctive feature of American academic dress, which through color and design may indicate the wearer’s degree and the institution at which that degree was earned. Hoods are lined with the colors of the institution that awards the degree, and may be faced with the color designating the degree awarded. Hoods vary in length. The bachelor’s hood is about three feet long, the master’s slightly longer and the doctoral version is longer still and is decorated with broad color panels. Candidates for advanced or professional degrees wear hoods symbolic of the degree. The color of the trim of the hood and the sleeve chevrons and panels of the academic gown are distinctive of the degree as follows: Degree: Gown: Hood: Doctor of Philosophy Black Velvet Panels Blue Velvet Collar and Sleeve Chevrons Doctor of Education Light Blue Velvet Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Kelly Green Velvet Light Blue Collar Panels and Sleeve Chevrons Kelly Green Velvet Collar Panels and Sleeve Chevrons Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Steel Gray Panels Steel Gray Collar and Sleeve Chevrons Master of Arts White Collar Master of Science Golden Yellow Collar The colors of Oklahoma State University are embodied in the lining of the hood (orange and black chevron). The colors of the hoods of faculty and guests are those of the institution conferring the degree. In addition to the academic regalia described above, some students wear cords, sashes, ribbons, and other symbols of heritage or achievement in academics, service, and leadership. Portions of the proceeding were adapted from the commencement program of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. 60 Commencement Committee Celeste Taber, University Registrar, Chair Daniel Alexander, Physical Plant Services John Ames, Graduate College Barbara Bremer, Spears School of Business Steve Damron, College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Leslie Evans, College of Education Katie Hoipkemier, Center for Veterinary Health Sciences Debbie Lane, Office of the System CEO/President Amy Martindale, College of Arts and Sciences Lance Millis, College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology Kristi Thrift Seuhs, College of Human Sciences Steve Stevenson, Environmental Health and Safety Special thanks to the volunteers from the OSU Emeriti Association for their assistance in distributing the Fall 2015 Commencement program. 61
