BATTLE CREEK COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

COMMUNITY
2011
Letter from Chair of the Board and President and CEO
Welcome to the 37th anniversary of the Battle Creek Community Foundation. We are pleased to
share the progress we have made this past year and our vision for the current year.
As national indicators showed a strengthened economic recovery during the past year, the Board
of Trustees of the Battle Creek Community Foundation focused on a vision well beyond our current
horizon. The need for greater change in order to improve and repair the damage to the well-being
of our community became self-evident.
Relying on the broad experience of our local volunteer leadership, the Board of Trustees
engaged in a learning process in order to revise and focus the primary goals of the Community
Foundation. While many of the services that support a strong philanthropic community will
continue, the Foundation has elevated specific work in Education and Health to the highest of
priorities. Included in these prioritized areas is the continued engagement of our neighborhoods
and community residents.
Within the Education focus is the broad vision that no Battle Creek Area resident will be denied
access to post-secondary education due to lack of resources. It is our intention to be inclusive in
both the definition of education, including both traditional high school graduates and adults, and
in the type of college or technical training such as technical trade schools that may become the
goal for area graduates. In Health, the goal is that we live in a community where all residents
are engaged in their own wellness and all babies are born healthy. These focus areas are directly
connected to the Battle Creek Community Foundation’s continued commitment to neighborhoods
and actively engaging residents in creating an environment of wellness and student success.
While some may consider these lofty visions, the leadership of the Community Foundation believes
that the pursuit of these goals is an absolute necessity to build the quality of life that is the basis
for the people of a vibrant Battle Creek.
Brenda Hunt and Ursula Case
Changes are already underway in the manner the Community Foundation must work to achieve
these goals. The requirements and timing in how the generous scholarships held within BCCF are
awarded has been moved in order to pursue greater Federal funding for local students. This will
allow access to more funding for more students. A revised approach in our health area with more
partners and individual engagement to insure that access to healthcare and wellness programs,
especially for those who are planning or expecting to give birth are available and utilized so that
all babies are born healthy.
So much is underway as we enter this new stage in our economic recovery. It is from this point
and period in our history that we begin to launch a new approach full of opportunities that will
benefit all of us in a vibrant community for the future.
Sincerely,
Ursula P. Case, Chairperson, Board of Trustees Brenda L. Hunt, President & CEO

COMMUNITY
Battle Creek CAN:
Building a College-Going Community Today
for a Better Tomorrow
Back in 2005, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation opened the eyes of the community to the possibility of making
college a reality for all students in Battle Creek Public Schools and the Lakeview School District through
its 75th anniversary gift of Legacy Scholars. In 2011, the Legacy Scholars (a supporting organization of
the Battle Creek Community Foundation) Board of Directors transitioned the organization to the Battle
Creek College Access Network. This move took an organization that was primarily focused on college
accessibility through affordability and broadened the scope of its mission to tackle all barriers to college
access and success for Battle Creek area students.
Battle Creek College Access Network (CAN)’s innovative approach helps all community stakeholders (from
students to businesses) work together toward the common goal of strengthening the community through
increased access to post high school education. Battle Creek CAN is weaving a tight network to tackle all
barriers to college access. Using a series of dynamic “access channels,” it helps grow youth, parents and
the community into a college-going mindset.
Through the coordination of Battle Creek CAN, Legacy Scholars continues to grow into a thriving
program that is preparing to graduate its first class of students from high school in 2012. With Legacy
Scholars as its solid foundation, Battle Creek CAN now becomes the over-arching structure for college
access for all in the community. The platform is firmly established to expand the same opportunities for
all students to have the same types of resources, no matter where they attend school in Battle Creek.
“My job is to rattle
cages and shake
trees to find all
available resources
to help students
get to college and
then successfully
complete it.”
Selena Melvin
Selena Melvin, Coordinator, Battle Creek CAN
Imagine a Battle Creek in which the goal of higher education is as commonplace as
a TV remote in the living room; where the expectation of going to college is on the
lips of everyone from grandparents to hip-hoppers. Envision our community as a
place where going to college is not an abstract thought, but concrete reality. That’s
the goal of Battle Creek CAN (College Access Network).
“First my mother, then my high school counselor helped put me on the path to
higher education,” Selena shares. “But there were aspects of college that I didn’t
expect.” As a result, Selena’s first year was challenging. Getting there just wasn’t
enough. “Fortunately, I got a second chance,” she says. “And that is the motivation
for me doing this very important work now.”
“There’s no doubt about it,” says Selena Melvin, coordinator of Battle Creek CAN.
“This represents an entire paradigm shift. Today, there’s a mandatory need to go
beyond a high school diploma, and my job is to rattle cages and shake trees to
find all available resources to help students prepare for college, get there and then
successfully complete it.”
Not only does Battle Creek CAN help high school graduates find resources to go
to college or trade school, it helps prepare them for what to expect. It’s a “lens”
that enables parents, teachers, business owners and other stakeholders to see the
big picture, combine forces and remain on the same page in their mutual quest to
provide higher education for local students.
Once upon a time, 12th graders could collect their diplomas and look forward to
any number of open factory jobs around Calhoun County. That was 20th century
thinking. In today’s era of smart phones and iPads, successful completion of trade
school or attainment of a college degree is the new reality.
Selena holds an amazing vision for Battle Creek; one in which the city is thriving,
thanks in large part to the higher quality of living that’s a result of more educated
families. “This program gives us an opportunity to share with parents just what can
happen with a college education,” says Selena. “We have to hammer home the real
and exciting fact that education pays. It literally pays.”
A first generation college graduate herself, Selena understands full well the
unanticipated challenges that can affect the performance of students entering
their freshman year of college.

A Path to
Community Wellness
Betty Moorehead: Her closest wellness ally
Ask Betty Moorehead who she turns to most about staying healthy and she’ll tell you, “I
just look in the mirror.” Betty’s attitude on wellness is simple. “I take responsibility for things
in my life that might affect my health,” says the fit 69-year-old retired Kellogg Company
employee. “I focus on whatever is ailing me, stay aware of any conditions that might run in
my family, and have a good relationship with my doctor.”
That kind of commitment to wellness might seem overwhelming to some, but Betty insists
staying healthy is easier than it seems – especially in Battle Creek. “There’s a wealth of things
here to help you,” she says. “You just have to seek them out.” One of them is the Burnham
Brook Community Center. “Their fitness center is the best kept ‘secret’ in town,” Betty says.
“It’s affordable, staff is friendly, and has state-of-the-art equipment and all kinds of exercise
classes. Burnham Brook also offers information and education programs on topics related to
staying healthy.
Betty takes close care of her spiritual self too. “I do daily prayer and meditation,” she says. “I
surround myself with positive people and take my lead from the Golden Rule.”
Running for her life
Betty also runs. “I did Girls on the Run with my great grand-daughter last spring,” she says. “It
was a lot of fun, and showed her how much I value staying healthy. That’s something I want
to pass on to her.”

Healthy Neighborhoods
in Schools
A cornerstone of any healthy community is the
ability to connect people to each other. Creating
the opportunity for residents to come together is
the hallmark of BCCF’s Healthy Neighborhoods in
Schools. Creating access to the services residents
need completes this “people-first” approach that
opens neighborhood schools as community hubs.
Healthy connections
Together with the Regional Health Alliance and
the Educators’ Task Force, and with support of the
W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Community Foundation is developing the chance for residents
and their school districts to engage together in creating healthy neighborhoods.
Prairieview Wellness Fair
What does this look like? Look no further than the Prairieview Elementary Wellness Fair. This
fun-filled event was led by a committee of parents, PTA members, and staff from the Calhoun
Intermediate School District (CISD), Calhoun County Health Department, Lakeview School
District and BCCF. CISD’s SPLASH (Supporting Positive Lifestyles and Attitudes Through
School Health) provided a great foundation for this neighborhood event. In addition to two
3K run/walks, led by the local Girls on the Run program, students and local residents had fun
learning about being healthy in a number of ways – from keeping their bodies in motion and
eating the right foods, to the simple act of enjoying themselves.

Regional Health Alliance (RHA)
The Regional Health Alliance (RHA) is an innovative
partnership of entities and individuals working to
improve the community’s health. With BCCF facilitating
RHA operations, the focus of these collective efforts
revolve around the goals of its six Issue Action Groups:
• 100% access to quality health care
with zero disparities
• All babies will be born healthy and
will thrive
• All school children will have access to
quality health care
• Promotion of a lifelong commitment
to good nutrition and regular physical
activity
• Reducing teen pregnancy
• Eliminate health disparities among
minority/underserved populations
Post Foundation: Here to stay
BUILDING A
Legacy of giving, lost and found
The issue. After a series of fateful corporate transitions in the ‘80s and ‘90s, Post Foods
employees and retirees in Battle Creek found their beloved company without a consistent,
systematic way of collectively giving back to the community they hold so dear.
vibrant
COMMUNITY
The solution. Create a local Foundation that’s of the people and by the people. Partner it
with a rock-solid local entity that will hold close the Post legacy, and then fortify it with the
muscle of a permanent endowment.
The result. The Post Foundation of Battle Creek, whose mission is to help shape and
encourage positive environments and activities of Greater Battle Creek.
Roots run deep
Post founder C.W. Post believed in his people. He also believed in his community, its
schools and its children. Supporters regard the Post Foundation as an opportunity to reestablish those roots and that heritage. Setting the tone for the new foundation through a
strong united front, current and former management and union workers banded together
to reform what is quickly becoming an exciting new philanthropic pillar in the community.
Active neighborhood partner
The Post Foundation’s initial project reinforces its genuine commitment to community,
children and service. In June, a groundbreaking ceremony kicked off a $15,000 playground
enhancement project at Franklin Elementary School – just down the street from the Post
plant. To date, the Post Foundation has accumulated more than $30,000 in its Battle Creek
Community Foundation-managed endowment fund. Its first $5,000 gift to the endowment
was contributed by the Postum Club.
Additional community investments will be in the historic Post Addition and north side
neighborhoods, and eventually spread throughout the city. The Post Foundation Advisory
Committee hopes to grow the new nonprofit and eventually make it autonomous.

Jeff Samson:
Giving as Good as He Gets
BCCF Youth Alliance Committee 2011 Senior Celebration
Jeff Samson
Jeff Samson, owner of Malia Mediterranean Bistro
Serving customers, serving the community. For Malia Mediterranean Bistro
owner Jeff Samson, it’s one in the same. As the calm and guiding force of
what many consider downtown Battle Creek’s trendiest restaurant, Jeff is as
passionate about supporting residents as he is running his business.
“My philosophy is if you give, people don’t have to be put in the sometimes
embarrassing position of having to ask,” says Samson, a resident of Battle Creek
for 22 years. “Over the years, people have given to me. That’s helped my life flow
in positive directions, so it only makes sense to want to give back.”
Five-course giving
Case in point, Samson offered up his restaurant to serve as the spot for the
Battle Creek Community Foundation to throw this year’s Youth Alliance
Committee Senior Celebration. “How can you not want to support a group of
kids doing such amazing volunteer work with their lives?” he asks with a smile.
The Youth Alliance Committee (YAC) was formed in 1989 by the Battle
Creek Community Foundation to give youth a platform for their own
philanthropy and giving, ultimately working to help improve quality
of life for area youth. YAC members take an active role in philanthropy
at BCCF, primarily through grantmaking, fund development, engaging
in community projects, and serving in key leadership roles with the
Community Foundation.
The Senior Celebration, a high-energy affair that was punctuated with
sumptuous eats, honored outgoing YAC members, many of whom were
headed off to college.
“It was great helping so many bright and promising youth celebrate their
important work,” Jeff says. “Their incredible passion and enthusiasm was
inspiring; I could just see and feel myself at that age again.”
Like father, like daughter

Jeff says his commitment to giving is a practice he learned growing up.
“Giving is something I inherited from my dad,” he says. “Now I’m passing
that gift on to my 20-year-old daughter.”
COMMUNITY
Battle Creek Community Foundation 2011 Annual Report
That philosophy of giving also percolates throughout his business, with
restaurant staff emulating Jeff’s own approach to service. “It’s just like
doing community work; it’s about seeing where you need to help out and
doing just that – without waiting to be asked.”
Family Giving Across the Generations
Erick Stewart: Lessons in giving
Old habits are hard to break, and can be a good thing according to Stewart
Industries co-founder/president Erick Stewart, especially when it comes to
philanthropy across generations.
At 41, Erick has practiced giving since he was a youth. “It was a key part of
my parents’ [Joe and Clara Stewart] philosophy in raising kids,” he says. “My
giving back today is based on my parents’ own habits in that respect, and
their upbringing of me.” According to Erick, “If you’re in business, you need
to take care of your employees, right? Well your employees are a part of
the community; therefore, you need to take care of the community. It’s a
symbiotic relationship.”
A cornerstone of giving for Erick is JECKS, founded by the Stewart family as
a donor-advised fund at the Battle Creek Community Foundation. JECKS
supports efforts centered on family and children issues. But for Erick, that’s
just the beginning. He is also heavily involved with the Urban League of Battle
Creek as Board Chair.
“One of the best things about my work with the
Urban League is supporting education programs
for youth,” says Erick. “Just looking in a child’s
eyes who completed one of the Urban League’s
youth education programs or has received
a college degree from Western Michigan
University, thanks to our scholarship program—
it’s indescribable. Achieving those early dreams
can lead to bigger dreams later in life.”
Urban League Youth Leadership Camp
Erick is also Advisory Board Chair for the Health
Equity Alliance, which advocates for and addresses improvement of health
among communities of color in Calhoun County through education and
partnerships. “It exists to shed light on disparities and find solutions to create
health care access for folks who need it,” Erick says with urgency. “The focus
is on ‘high-bar’ issues like obesity. If we attack the high bars, we make the
community stronger as a whole, and therefore more productive.”
Erick is following in his parents’ footsteps in many ways. A critical one is how
he’s raising his three kids. “Just as my parents are the root catalyst on how
philanthropic I am now, I am instilling those same values into my own kids.”
“My giving back
today is based on my
parents’ own habits ”
Erick Stewart
“I share with my dad
a deeply personal
commitment to giving
to others.”
Drew Schweitzer
Erick Stewart and Drew Schweitzer
Drew Schweitzer: Constructing a legacy
As VP of the venerable Schweitzer Construction, Drew Schweitzer is not
only following in his dad’s footsteps in the family business, the 33-year-old
also is building on his father’s community philanthropy.
Before he passed away, Drew’s businessman father Chris Schweitzer had
established a generous pattern of giving back to Battle Creek. Today, his son
Drew continues this legacy of giving with a passion. But make no mistake;
Drew is forging his own path in this regard with a quiet tenacity that has
invigorated so many around him. “My dad was interested in so many
things – from biking to boating to golf,” says Drew. “After he passed away,
we wanted to honor his memory in a respectful but active way through the
passions that were a part of his life.”
A cornerstone of this was establishing the J. Chris Schweitzer Foundation, a
donor-advised fund of the Battle Creek Community Foundation. “Dad was
interested in a lot of things. Later in life, he got into riding Harleys,” shares
Drew. “So after he died, we set up a memorial ride as a way of honoring
him, but more importantly raising money to send kids with diabetes to a
camp in Fenton, Michigan.”
Drew says those closest to his dad were aware he was a lifelong diabetic,
and a memorial motorcycle ride seemed like a respectful way of
remembering him. The 2007 inaugural ride happened about a year after his
father’s passing and raised $8,000. Last year they raised $18,000. “It takes a
lot of work but what really helps is my dad had a lot of friends; a lot of them
are subcontractors he worked with who really stepped up,” says Drew.
Drew says his sister is equally involved in the Schweitzer family giving
legacy and is planning a benefit bicycle ride. The purpose is to hold a
fundraiser that allows people of all ages to participate, especially youth.
For Drew, giving to the community is an obligation. “I think it’s important for
young people to also give to others. It’s kind of hard to explain, but I share
with my dad a deeply personal commitment to giving to others.”

Finance & Investments
Fiscal year 2010-2011
The BCCF tradition of strong volunteer leadership and competent staff has guided the Foundation into this emerging
period of economic recovery. In addition to the BCCF Board of Trustees, a nineteen member Finance and Investment
Committee continues to monitor all aspects of the invested assets at the Foundation.
Consistently administering investment and spending policies has sustained the Foundation’s commitment to the community
during the economic downturn by maintaining grantmaking, scholarships and other community support at consistent levels
prior to this period. Greater collaboration and extended partnerships have been utilized to leverage community assets to
generate a greater impact for the community.
During fiscal year 2010-2011, the Community Foundation’s investments were held in 668 Endowment Funds.
The Foundation pools these funds to benefit from a diversified investment portfolio and to maximize returns and streamline
administration.

A contribution to an endowment fund makes a great
gift when honoring an individual’s retirement, birthday,
anniversary, graduation, service in the community, or
even to honor someone who has done work for you
and won’t take money for the job! Individuals also make
gifts on special remembrance days for their loved ones
who have passed. There are endless ideas for giving to
an endowment fund in honor of an individual, club or
business. A card is sent by the Community Foundation
to the individual being honored, or to the family of the
individual, club or business, indicating that a gift has
been made in their honor.

COMMUNITY
Urban League Youth Leadership Camp at the
Urbandale Community Vegetable Garden
Jim was 91 when he passed away, but his love of life, community and giving
continues to leave a legacy that touches the lives of Battle Creek residents. Jim joined
the Kellogg Company after graduating from Battle Creek Central High School in 1938.
His keen interest in math, science and mechanical drawing fueled his enthusiasm
for his early work as a young and talented draftsman. In the ‘40s, Jim served his
country valiantly as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army. His tour of duty was historic: he
participated in the famous Omaha Beach invasion on D-Day, as well as the grueling
but victorious Battle of the Bulge.
On return to civilian life, Jim resumed his career at the Kellogg Company, working as a designer in the
engineering department, and distinguished himself in many ways, including developing programs in
mechanical training and corporate technical training. After more than 47 years of service to the company,
Jim retired in 1986. Jim was as committed to community as he was to his wife, family, and career. He was past
president of both the Battle Creek Engineers Club and the Battle Creek/Kalamazoo Chapter of the American
Society for Training and Development. He served on the Policy Advisory Board of the Calhoun Area Career Center
for 27 years and as its chairman for three years. He was also the past president of the Great Lakes Chapter of the
Association for the 30th Infantry Division.
Forever dedicated to manufacturing technology, to assist those entering the field, he established the Bettie &
Jim Cox Scholarship Fund at the Battle Creek Community Foundation. Reflecting on the establishment of this
fund, Jim once stated, “It became obvious that many students became motivated and more interested in their
education after they came to the [Calhoun Area Career] Center and started doing hands-on training.” Since
1997, the power of “doing” and the Bettie & Jim Cox Scholarship have provided an incentive for students who are
pursuing a career in manufacturing technology.
Heritage Society
The purpose of the Heritage Society is to identify and thank those who have expressed their intent to provide
a gift in the future by naming the Battle Creek Community Foundation as beneficiary through their estate
planning or other means, and to those who have made a current gift(s) totaling $10,000 or more. To honor
these individuals and recognize their generosity, the Battle Creek Community Foundation established the
“Heritage Society.” The many examples of giving through Heritage Society members may help others find
a way to fulfill their dreams, or the legacy of a lost loved one, through opportunities available within the
Community Foundation.
The Battle Creek Community Foundation honors and recognizes the following individuals for their generosity
to this community through the Heritage Society program, and wishes to express our sincere gratitude!

Memorials
April 1, 2010 – March 31, 2011
For more than three decades, the Battle Creek Community Foundation has been helping families and friends honor the lives of those who have passed away with memorial
options designed to fit every need, every family, and every life. With loss, family and friends feel the need to carry on the legacy or tribute to the loved one. Maybe your loved one
always wanted something changed in the community…maybe that person had a strong passion for a certain area of interest or program…maybe that person never received
recognition for an accomplishment(s) in their lifetime. A memorial gift is a special way to honor your loved one – year after year – and at the same time, do good things in the
community in their name. When a gift is made to an endowment fund in memory of an individual, a card is sent by the Community Foundation to the family of the deceased,
indicating that a gift has been made in their memory.
We remember the following individuals who were recognized through thoughtful memorial gifts to the Community Foundation this past fiscal year:
Tributes
Kattie Mae Williams 1939-2011
Kattie’s dedication and
commitment to the
community was well
known throughout Battle
Creek. Her devotion to St.
Phillip Catholic Church was
evident by her willingness
to volunteer wherever
she was needed, from
ushering Mass, to helping
with mailings for the
church, assisting with senior ministries and working in
the thrift shop. She also volunteered at the Humane
Society-Calhoun Area and Binder Park Zoo. Kattie was a
jeweled Ambassador and Heritage Society Member at
the Battle Creek Community Foundation, where in 2006,
she established the Williams-Richardson Endowment
Fund for Money Management to provide resources for
individuals needing financial education.
Kattie began her career while in high school, working
as a co-op student for Michigan Bell, and retired in 1989
from AT&T. She enjoyed, photography, cooking soul food,
attending local baseball games and listening to music at
the Farmer’s Market in downtown Battle Creek with her
best friends, Norma Reed, and her dog, Peppe. Kattie’s
heart was as big as her smile and she will be greatly
missed by all who knew her.
Donald Bartlett Pope 1914-2011
A dedicated volunteer, Don
served his community well. In
addition to his 34years on the
Pennfield School Board, he was
a lifetime member of the Battle
Creek Host Lions Club, faithful
member of Trinity Lutheran
Church, an active member
of the Nottowa Trails Boy
Scout Council, the YMCA , the
Southwest Michigan Council on
Aging, and a volunteer for the Battle Creek Community
Foundation. Don was an athlete and jogging enthusiast,
and often placed first in his age group while running in
10K races. At the age of 95, he set the world record for
swimming the 200 meter back stroke.
Know as a Master Gardener, Don’s friends and family
appreciated his ability to grow and harvest the very best
tomatoes and gladiolas, which he graciously shared.
He was also a proud volunteer at the Leila Arboretum.
When his wife of 66 years, Evelyn Louise Pope, passed
away in 2007, Don established the Leila Arboretum
Society/Donald & Evelyn Pope Fund at the Battle Creek
Community Foundation.
Don moved his family to Battle Creek in 1953, and was
the plant manager for Sullivan Milk Products until 1969,
when he was hired as a microbiologist for the Kellogg
Company, retiring in 1980. A devoted father of two, Don
was particularly proud of his 10 grandchildren, who
lovingly share stories of working the garden with him as
well as the many core values he instilled in them.

contribute to this fund in memory of a loved one to have their name included in the ongoing tribute. Any time
individuals contribute to this fund in memory of a child (or other loved one), the child’s name will be included in this
ongoing tribute in memory of the lives of these beloved children of our community. Honorary gifts to this fund will
also be included in this ongoing tribute.
This fund has been established to support programs that promote healthy character development in children, focus

Donor Advised Funds
A Donor Advised Fund is for those who would like
to establish a fund with the Battle Creek Community
Foundation and want to make suggestions from time
to time on distributions. Through a Donor Advised
Fund, you can have an active hand in your charitable
giving, as well as suggest which organizations should
be supported, such as your high school or college,
church, or other favorite charity. Many donors
send out several donations throughout the year to
different charities of their choice. Having a donor
advised fund takes the burden off the donor, as the

BCCF Ambassador Program
For years, the Battle Creek Community Foundation was known as the community’s “Best Kept Secret.” The
Ambassador Program was implemented to help spread the word about the special opportunities available at
the Community Foundation. An Ambassador is one who spreads the word about the Battle Creek Community
Foundation – in their own environment, at their own pace, and at a level in which they are comfortable.
Currently, there are more than 300 individuals participating in the Ambassador Program.
Becoming an Ambassador is easy: attend two trainings and you receive your Official BCCF Ambassador pin. A
training consists of joining Community Foundation for lunch or dinner at a host organization in the community
where attendees learn about the facility and the activities of that organization. Once individuals receive their
Official BCCF Ambassador status, they may start earning their jewels to become a “Jeweled Ambassador.
” The “Royal Ambassador” is the highest level and has earned all five jewels.
Thanks to our Ambassadors, the Battle Creek Community Foundation is no longer the best kept secret. The support
and dedication of the Ambassadors both to the Community Foundation and to our community are priceless!

Ambassador Profile:
A Commitment to Community Giving
Gordon and Elizabeth Peckham are amazing. He has a PhD
with four degrees from three schools, and was a former Harper
Creek Community Schools superintendent. She enjoyed a
storied career as an RN, working as Director of the Michigan
Nurses Association and helped then-Governor Milliken codify
all nursing related laws in the State of Michigan. But that’s not
why there’re so special.
Gordon served with distinction aboard a Navy combat warship
during World War II, and Elizabeth worked in support of our
veterans at the VA. But what makes the Peckhams so amazing
is their unwavering level of commitment to Battle Creek.
For the Peckhams, (married 63 years, with six children, 16
grandchildren & half-a-dozen great grandchildren), giving
comes in many forms. Generous financial donations are only
part of the story. Since 1971, when the couple moved here
from Mt. Clemens, each has steadily given to Battle Creek in
meaningful ways. Gordon was among the people who helped
pioneer Battle Creeks’s public access TV station, AccessVision
(AV). He also served as board president of the Humane
Society-Calhoun Area. Wife Elizabeth served faithfully as one
of AV’s initial volunteers, and also has volunteered at the Red
Cross and with her church.
“Helping others and our community is an important way of
doing something we can be proud of,” she shares.
When the Battle Creek Community Foundation created
its Ambassador Program, it certainly had residents like the
Peckhams in mind. Both possess a deep understanding of how
the Community Foundation’s role can magnify an individual’s
philanthropic impact in Battle Creek.
For instance, Gordon’s enduring love of animals inspired him to
found the Humane Society-Calhoun Area P.E.T.S. Fund through
the Foundation. Not to be outdone, Elizabeth, with her passion
the arts, established a Community Foundation giving fund to
support the Battle Creek Civic Theatre. But make no mistake:
there’s no philanthropic “competition” between husband and
wife. Rather, the pair simply enjoy a matrimonial union that has
through the years been rooted in helping others.
“We’re into making a lasting impact,” says Gordon. “Giving
through the Battle Creek Community Foundation helps us do
just that.”

Tribute
Robert G. “Bob” Grimes 1935-2011
The Pennfield community lost one of its most avid Panthers this year. Robert G. “Bob” Grimes was deeply steeped in the district, serving
as principal of Pennfield High School from 1970-1993, and then moved to the superintendent’s position for six years, retiring in 1999.
An avid sports fan, Bob was a member of the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) for seventeen years, and served as
the organization’s president for seven. In 1997, he received MHSAA’s most prestigious honor, the “Charles E. Forsythe Award.” He was
a member of the Cereal City Lions Club for 39 years with perfect attendance, and served on the Kellogg Community College Board of
Trustees for 14 years, including two terms as chairman.
In step with his community involvement has always been Bob’s family – his wife, Beverly, and his three sons, and grandchildren. His
commitment to his family, community and Pennfield Schools reflect his lasting legacy.
Bob was instrumental in introducing the concept of the Pennfield Schools Educational Foundation to the district. Through his shared vision, the Pennfield
Schools Educational Foundation will help students, staff and the community improve education for generations to come.

Legacy Scholars, a supporting organization
of the Battle Creek Community Foundation,
to become the Battle Creek College Access Network:
Battle Creek CAN
Initiated by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in 2005,
the Legacy Scholars Program goal is to make high
school diplomas and a college education a reality for
all students in the Battle Creek Public Schools and the
Lakeview School District. By providing post secondary
education at Kellogg Community College, the Legacy
Scholars Program will continue to be a cornerstone of
the Battle Creek CAN.
Now, as the first class of Legacy Scholars is set to
graduate from high school in 2012, the framework is
set to expand the opportunity for all students in the
community to make college a reality. With Legacy
Scholars as its solid foundation, Battle Creek CAN now
becomes the over-arching structure to support a
college-going culture for all in the community.
Burnham Brook Title Holding Corporation
With the dedicated leadership of the Burnham Brook Community Center Board of Directors, staff and
through the insight and generosity of the Battle Creek Community Foundation Board of Trustees,
implementation of the Burnham Brook Community Center business model has proven to be successful.
Operations of the Burnham Brook Community Center have ended both of the last two fiscal years March 31,
2010 and 2011 respectively with a positive operating balance. This first stage of success has been achieved
through the commitment and dedication of building and funding partners, community organizations who
utilize Burnham Brook for their meetings and through the dedication of volunteers and members of the
Center. This transition of the Burnham Brook Community Center continues to be an extensive journey –
one that will clearly rank at the top of the list when it comes to important accomplishments for the Battle
Creek Community Foundation.
In January 2008, the Burnham Brook Community Center (BBCC) transitioned to new ownership and
management of the Burnham Brook Community Center Title Holding Corporation, a wholly owned
subsidiary of the Battle Creek Community Foundation (BCCF). Working with BCCF and community
leadership, a sustainable model that concentrated on creating a “hub” for senior activities and services that
promote healthy living began taking shape.
On an average week, over 2,000 people connect with the Burnham Brook Community Center-based
activities and programs or come to the Center to participate in educational and community based
meetings that stimulate learning and democracy. There are several rooms (many recently renovated) of
various sizes available and appropriately priced to allow access to the community.
