2016–17 SEASON CONNECT. ENGAGE. HAVE A BALL. WELCOME TO THE REDFERN ARTS CENTER DEAR FRIENDS: The Redfern is brimming over with excitement as we head into our 35th season and we hope to delight you, entertain you, challenge you, and invite you to explore new horizons with all of our remarkable offerings this coming year. This summer we proudly launch the first Redfern Summer Series, with an outdoor family film series Classics on the Quad and a free concert with the USAF Rhythm in Blue Jazz Ensemble. In the fall we kick off with the hilarious antics of Capitol Steps, followed by the mesmerizing moves of international dance sensation Lil Buck. You can laugh and wonder at the wildly inventive animation of The Triplets of Belleville. Love puppetry? The Redfern is offering two uniquely different companies this year; the family favorite Puppet Showplace Theater and the award-winning innovative visual theatre company Wakka Wakka Productions. And with every performance there is an opportunity to mingle with the artists and enjoy free food and drink in the company of your friends and family. The Redfern Arts Center is thrilled to share all of our events and activities with you throughout the year, and we look forward to seeing you soon! Shannon R. What to Expect When You’re Electing is the only show where you’ll see your favorite politicians President Obama, Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, and more onstage singing show tunes. A 35-year sensation in Washington and around the nation, this comedic troupe puts the “mock” in democracy and offers side-splitting, fiercely bipartisan humor in a new show that simply can’t be Trumped! “They’re the best. There’s no one like them, no one in their league.” – Larry King, CNN CREATIVE CONNECTIONS: Post-show reception and meet and greet with the artists This performance is sponsored by Cambridge Trust Company, Hancock Inn, and The Keene Sentinel keene.edu/arts/redfern 3 Lil Buck and Ashley Bathgate What Moves You street dance/live music WED / OCT 5 / 7:30 p.m. Main Theatre • TICKETS: $20–$13, $5 KSC students “Lil Buck has fashioned a style of movement that is breathtakingly original.” – The Wall Street Journal KYLE CORDOVA Charles “Lil Buck” Riley brought international attention to the street dance Memphis jookin’ in 2011 when a video of his improvised performance with cellist Yo-Yo Ma went viral on YouTube, resulting in Ma declaring him a “genius.” What Moves You is an intimate duo collaboration between Lil Buck and one of today’s most accomplished contemporary cellists, Ashley Bathgate. Lil Buck and Bathgate will present an interactive performance that reveals the intricacy and immediacy of the creative process between movement and music, and challenges the boundaries of what the two instruments – the body and the cello – can do. CREATIVE CONNECTIONS: Dance masterclass with Lil Buck Music workshop with Ashley Bathgate Post-show reception and Q&A with the artists 4 keene.edu/arts/redfern IVAN SINGER This performance is sponsored by The Kingsbury Fund. Local middle and high school students perform with KSC students and faculty the children’s opera Brundibar, composed by Hans Krása with a libretto by Adolf Hoffmeister. Brundibar, which was performed over 50 times at Terezín, is a beautiful children’s story which extolls the virture of courage over tyranny.
