2016–17 SEASON
CONNECT. ENGAGE. HAVE A BALL.
WELCOME TO THE REDFERN ARTS CENTER
DEAR FRIENDS:
The Redfern is brimming over with excitement as we head into our 35th
season and we hope to delight you, entertain you, challenge you, and
invite you to explore new horizons with all of our remarkable offerings
this coming year.
This summer we proudly launch the first Redfern Summer Series, with an outdoor
family film series Classics on the Quad and a free concert with the USAF Rhythm in
Blue Jazz Ensemble. In the fall we kick off with the hilarious antics of Capitol Steps,
followed by the mesmerizing moves of international dance sensation Lil Buck. You can
laugh and wonder at the wildly inventive animation of The Triplets of Belleville. Love
puppetry? The Redfern is offering two uniquely different companies this year; the
family favorite Puppet Showplace Theater and the award-winning innovative visual
theatre company Wakka Wakka Productions. And with every performance there is an
opportunity to mingle with the artists and enjoy free food and drink in the company of
your friends and family.
The Redfern Arts Center is thrilled to share all of our events and activities with you
throughout the year, and we look forward to seeing you soon!

political comedy
MIKE REYNA
You know it’s an election year when Capitol Steps are in town! What to Expect
When You’re Electing is the only show where you’ll see your favorite politicians
President Obama, Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, and more onstage singing show
tunes. A 35-year sensation in Washington and around the nation, this comedic
troupe puts the “mock” in democracy and offers side-splitting, fiercely bipartisan
humor in a new show that simply can’t be Trumped!
“They’re the best. There’s
no one like them, no one in
their league.”

“Lil Buck has fashioned
a style of movement
that is breathtakingly
original.”
– The Wall Street Journal
KYLE CORDOVA
Charles “Lil Buck” Riley brought international attention
to the street dance Memphis jookin’ in 2011 when a
video of his improvised performance with cellist Yo-Yo
Ma went viral on YouTube, resulting in Ma declaring
him a “genius.” What Moves You is an intimate duo
collaboration between Lil Buck and one of today’s
most accomplished contemporary cellists, Ashley
Bathgate. Lil Buck and Bathgate will present an
interactive performance that reveals the intricacy and
immediacy of the creative process between movement
and music, and challenges the boundaries of what the
two instruments – the body and the cello – can do.

TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE
Come along with us to the streets of
Paris in the 1930s and hear the sounds
of Le Jazz Hot, when the Academy
Award-nominated animated classic The
Triplets of Belleville fills the Redfern’s big
screen. On stage, composer Benoît
Charest leads the 8-piece “Le Terrible
Orchestre de Belleville” in his original film
score. You’ve never seen anything like
The Triplets of Belleville, a wildly inventive
and highly original animated feature
crowded with colorful characters and
fantastic imagery.

BILL GNADE
This distinctive concert is the centerpiece of the Fall 2016
commemorative series entitled Voices of Terezín, dedicated
to the legacy of the Jewish composers and artists held in
Terezín, the Nazi concentration camp in what is now the
Czech Republic. Local middle and high school students
perform with KSC students and faculty the children’s opera Brundibar, composed by Hans
Krása with a libretto by Adolf Hoffmeister. Brundibar, which was performed over 50 times at
Terezín, is a beautiful children’s story which extolls the virture of courage over tyranny. New
Hampshire’s beloved Apple Hill String Quartet will perform the works of Pavel Haas, a Czech
composer and also an inmate of Terezín. Voices of Terezín honors the remarkable artistry
that took place in Terezín in spite of inhumane conditions, and celebrates the triumph of the
human spirit.
Voices of Terezín is sponsored by C&S Wholesale Grocers and
is a collaboration with the Keene State College Music Department and Cohen Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies.

theatrical comedy
MARK GARVIN
America in the 1960s, an era that encouraged
LOVE, was populated by “Mad Men” and “Mod
Women” trying to navigate the new normal. In
this freshly conceived production of Neil Simon’s
classic, Last of the Red Hot Lovers, true comedy
ensues when a modern man in the hip 60s looks for
something new and different, but ends up finding
himself in the same situation, again and again …
and again! Last of the Red Hot Lovers had a lengthy
run on Broadway and was made into a hit film
starring Alan Arkin and Sally Kellerman.

2125 Stanley Street is a performance
installation created by choreographer
Dahlia Nayar that investigates questions
of belonging, the challenge of creating
habitat in a foreign place, and the
personal embodiment of culture and
cultural memory, especially in the context
of home. In this special collaboration
with the Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery,
Nayar reflects on her experiences
growing up outside of Chicago with
parents from India and the Philippines.

Creative Connections invites our campus, local community members, friends, and
partners to participate and collaborate in a wide range of immersive experiences
with artists throughout the year. Through community workshops, master classes,
class visits and conversations with visiting artists, exhibits, and pop-up events, the
Redfern generates opportunities for audiences to tap into art, artists, and the creative
process. Creative Connections is a public engagement platform, providing the space
for audiences to share ideas and to experience performance from different angles.
Creative Connections programs are FREE and open to the public. Look for
highlighted Creative Connections activities throughout the brochure. Public
engagement activities are scheduled throughout the season. As the season
progresses, check the Redfern website and Facebook page for Creative
Connections updates and information about how you can participate
WORKSHOPS/CLASSES — Workshops
and masterclasses with artists and special
guests build context for a performance, reveal
and relate the creative process, and create
empowering experiences for our audiences.
CONVERSATIONS/INTERACTIONS — Engage directly with artists and guests in
a variety of lectures, discussions, and pre- and post-performance talks. Gain deeper
insight into the performance and the artists’ creative practices, and share your
thoughts with us.
RECEPTIONS — The Redfern loves a
party! Kick off our season with us, hang out
at a listening party, or join us in the lobby
after the show for refreshments, snacks, and
conversation with the artists.
HAPPENINGS — Keep an eye out for
