Experimental sci-fi, short fiction film |
2008 | Digibeta | 16:9 | Stereo | 23’
is a sci-fi film about a futuristic research centre.
It is the year 2038. The world has come to an end of sorts in 2012. All political, economical,
and social structures have collapsed due to a catastrophic natural disaster. Power has been redistributed in the cruellest way possible.
There is a secret space research centre on a far-away upland area behind the Himalayas. It
has now gained a surprising position that can benefit the whole of the remaining world.
The difficult task of saving the remaining world falls on this re-arranged complex. Nuclear
disasters, physical and psychological damage to people, and increasingly stranger natural phenomena are now commonplace challenges for the venerable institution.
An experimental film, =X offers random glimpses of life at this institution. It tells a story about
hope, conflicts, and disobedience. It portrays people whose tenacity and thirst for life help them
heal in the midst of all the horrors.

A Blue Dolphin
“I tell stories that are based on my own experiences, preferably on
dilemmas, in which I haven’t been able to choose between right and
wrong. There are situations that end up all wrong no matter how well
you try to deal with them. Sometimes hurting the other person can be
the best thing that has ever happened to him or her. My starting point is
introspection, but my conclusions are universal.
In a way, A Blue Dolphin tells the tale of Adam and Eve. What happens
when Adam and Eve leave Paradise? What happens to them in the evil
world when their umbilical cords are cut and they are faced with new
challenges and when they don’t have the necessary skills or knowledge
to overcome them?”

The young main characters of Evolutions are in a film studio, defining their worldviews. The studio is portrayed as a stage-like space, unrestricted by time and place, and it provides an opportunity to reconstruct past worlds, memories and mental images. Time, on the other hand, is seen as
a strongly subjective experience, as the lives of the young people are intertwined with signposts
of evolution. Simultaneously, religious and mythological imageries are linked and become part of
this complex whole that reveals how images and stories, both scientific and mythical, have made
our world more comprehensible to us.

This film tells the story of Felix Forsman, a curious and daring war cinematographer with a great
sense of humour, and his most memorable filming assingment. Early in June 1942, Adolf Hitler
paid a surprise visit to Finland to congratulate Carl Gustaf Mannerheim, the Commander in Chief
of the Finnish Defence Forces on his 75th birthday (which, incidentally, was the only time Hitler
travelled outside the Third Reich) and Mannerheim, though reluctantly, decided to return the
favour by visiting Germany. Felix was present, filming on both occasions. Through his lens, Felix
was able to observe Hitler, Hermann Göring, and the conditions in Berlin and in the Nazi German headquarters during the summer of 1942. From these eight days, Felix has, of course, sad
stories to tell, but also surprising and humorous ones, and this will be the first time he has done
it in public. The newsreel that was made out of these images was banned shortly after it was completed, and it remained censored for 65 years. The reason for this will be exposed in the film.

Hit the Road
In this rolling comedy, the main character takes a fantastic study trip of love to India. He is obsessed by an image of happiness; the image includes a beautiful woman. The main character of
the film seeks happiness so fervently that he no longer sees nor hears the world around him. Wise
snakes and warm cows try to stop the obsessed main character from running around in circles.
The main character is a prisoner of his own “talking head,” his mind, and instant karma fines
him on the spot time and time again, in vain. At the end, the animals in the film are forced to
take extreme measures to stop the main character. The main character wakes up to reality and
notices that his mental “messing around” has also left a physical imprint on him.

The Hour of Prayer
the death of a dog, it tells the story of death entering a house and of the process of dealing with
grief. These autobiographical events begin in New York during a winter storm in January and
end in Benin, West Africa, eleven months later. The first part of the narrative is told as a classical
tale, in which the words and events explain each other and form a chronological progression. As
the narrator speaks, words for time are prominent and images and sounds record the changes
of season in various landscapes. The film is made up of original material shot at the time of the
events and of reconstructed situations. An actress presents the story directly to the camera on a
dark expanse of sand, which as the story progresses is revealed to be a set. The work moves away
from the events in the story and the attribution of meaning, becoming a more general presentation of a private experience. It ends with the actor walking through the different sets singing to
viewers the words of Lhasa’s “Small Song”.

Her Complete Poems to Poor Little Thing, who won’t let the reciting disturb her sleep...
When Poor Little Thing suddenly flies away with its family, Isola is forced to go back to worshipping her solitude...
Poor Little Thing comes back, this time with a friend... Isola feels torn. She feels bittersweet
and abandoned when the young ones are sitting in her Apple Tree, looking at the moon...
When Poor Little Thing’s birdie friend runs off and it looks like Poor Little Thing might stay,
Isola feels ambivalent once again: alone, free, independent, melancholic or together, disturbed,
restrained, attention-seeking, happy?

Jalil is 17-year-old boy living with his Iranian family in a suburb near Helsinki. Though he has
lived in Finland all his life, it seems hard for him to find acceptance among the “native” Finns. At
home he faces the opposite problem. His parents demand him to respect Iranian cultural traditions.
Jalil is about one day in the life of a boy standing on the edge of two cultures. On this summer
day big things are bound to culminate; religion, identity, love.

is a music fantasy and a new interpretation of the primeval Kalevala epic and the myth
of the creation of the world. The first song of the Kalevala, the Daughter of Ether, is visualized by
using a virtual set design and digital animation. The masterpiece of the music by composer Jean
Sibelius is interpreted by great Finnish performing artists, soprano Riikka Hakola, dancer Nina
Hyvärinen, and conductor Leif Segerstam, and the grand Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra.
“In primeval times, a Maiden,
Beauteous Daughter of the Ether,
Passed for ages her existence
In the great expanse of heaven,
O’er the prairies yet unfolded...”

Nyt ja nyt – Kuvia Helsingistä ennen ja nyt
]
is a short film based on the oldest surviving film clips shot in Helsinki and on new
images shot by Pekka Uotila in the same locations between 2006 and 2008.
The film moves between these clips from different eras and creates a strange sense of connection between the past and the present for the viewer. It captures close-ups of people in the shots and
highlights those random seconds that have been stored on film. The images we are shown include
“a dignified officer”, “joyful boys”, “smoke from a gentleman’s cigar”, “a working man’s gaze” etc.
By capturing, repeating and enlarging these moments, Uotila tries to make the viewer realise
that the person in the picture is living in his or her “present”. Any moment, when experienced by
a human, is as real as “now” at home in front of the TV or in the theatre at a film festival.
This film is a visual poem about time and its changes, and about the anonymous residents of
Helsinki in their moments of here and now. Living pictures still possess a certain magic, and this
film is a tribute to the miracle of the moving picture, to the traditional movie camera and, to a
certain extent, to its user, the cinematographer.

A short film of a Finnish cityscape.
The starting point is the home landscape of people who, in urgent need of a home, have been
settled in cities, small towns and industrial towns; this landscape is not part of the public image
of Finnish architecture.
In the film, a dreamer and the dreamer’s shadow move freely in time and space. The film
studies the constructed cityscape from an emotional standpoint and with the help of archive
material, offers a visual trip back in time into Finnish cities and towns. Public spaces affect us,
and we affect them. Buildings are images of us.

is a one-hour, split-screen film based on a real incident that took place during
the Algerian War of Independence. As a kind of consequence of and reaction to atrocities committed by the French, two Algerian boys kill their friend – a French boy of the same age. The story,
told in four simultaneous images, starts in the present day, with Death entering The Poet’s house.
With Death’s help, The Poet begins to investigate the incident from the past, which is gradually
interwoven with events from the present. The mist over the back garden of the Poet’s house clears
to reveal a white rowing boat in the swimming pool. Adel and Ismael, the two Algerian are sitting
in it.

A video montage by Jari Haanperä, where the lights of different metropoles intertwine into a network of lights that covers the whole planet. On the northern fringe of this network, in the light of
an electric bulb, a group of Finns contemplate the concept of “world of light” and their individual
relationships to it.
”If you have the power, the might and the money, the simplest way of showing it all is to use
enormous amounts of light.”
“Lights make up a system which is similar to a neural network in the way they interconnect. It
will probably grow a lot denser and then starts to seek its optimum form. We are possibly still in
a state of growth.”
“The amount of light in the world is equal to the ability of a man to generate it. There will be
more light tomorrow than there is today, whether I want it or not. Then the only possibility that is
left will be to get out of the light.”
“Fear is one of the central issues associated with darkness. Man needs a lot of artificial light
to keep the fear at bay.”

”I think that a film should be like the Trojan horse: It should have an
interesting story that lures us into letting our guard down and accepting
the film. But inside the film there should also be something else: something that the filmmakers want to convey with the film. If we succeed
in making the film, with the help of the story, that something is experienced through the emotions of the audience. So the audience is left with
something more than a story. It’s a message more powerful than words.”
