TICO to discuss all-in pricing with
gov’t but that may not end high fees
TORONTO — The amount of taxes
and fees on travel packages has become controversial as many agents
believe some tour operators are putting more and more of the final price
into this area to lower the commission they pay.
The Travel Industry Council of Ontario said it is on the list of regulatory
changes for consideration with the
government.
This could take a while and it is no
guarantee that operators will no longer
be able to play games with taxes and fees.

USA ROUND-UP
January and February are less expensive for
visitors to New York City
In Quebec where operators have to
quote the total price including taxes
and fees, there can still be a major difference in the commissionable part of
the price.
One Quebec agent compared the
prices offered by two different operators to the same hotel with one charging $1,504 departing on Jan. 20 and the
other charging $1,510 departing on Jan.
21, virtually the same.
But the first operator – WestJet Vacations – broke down the price as $1,419
plus $85 in taxes while the second operator – Sunwing – charged $1,195 plus
$315 in taxes and fees.
Bryan Klompas, Sunquest’s Executive
Vice-President, outlined the dilemma
for tour operators.
“We’re trying to follow the market
standard right now. It’s not our position to buck the trend. We would support a level playing field. We would be
all over that.”
Sunquest introduced more-inclusive
base pricing for winter 2012-2013 product but it didn’t work out. “It hurt us
more than it helped us.”
This winter WestJet Vacations and
CanJet Vacations are paying commission on everything except governmentimposed taxes.
A spokesperson for Consumer Proection BC said: “I don’t believe that the
Province has any plans at this time to
consider new legislation to require allinclusive pricing for tour operators”.

Sunquest turns a

new GoGuide
TORONTO — “We know you expect
great things from this brand and we will
not let you down.”
In other words, Sunquest is back.
TravelBrands executives were out in
full force last week at the launch of Sunquest’s new GoGuide, hosting industry
players including suppliers, tourism
boards and travel agents for an event
that showcased not only the GoGuide
but also a new Insider’s Agent Guide
for Sunquest, Holiday House, Intair Vacations and Fun Sun Vacations product, as well as an expanded line-up for

growth trajectory, Klompas told the
audience, eliciting a round of cheers.
Sunquest recently completed its first
full fiscal year since Red Label Vacations and Enzo, Joe and Frank DeMarinis bought the company from Thomas
Cook in March 2013.
Sunquest couldn’t have achieved
its success without the support of
travel agents and supplier partners,
said the execs. “Sunquest, Encore
Cruises, ALBATours, Intair – these are
all well-known brands. We want to
earn your business back and you’re
going to see how we’re going to do
that over the next few months. TravelBrands is in the positive and this

your support. From the bottom of
our hearts, we thank you,” said Frank

brochure. “It’s the GoGuide. We don’t use
the ‘b’ word anymore,” Miron joked. “And
Sunquest is no longer a tour operator. It’s
Canada’s travel company.”
Agents will also see more of Sunquest’s Longer for Less program, and
more of a focus on its Deal of the Week
line-up, he said. “The Deal of the Week
will be so value-driven that your clients
won’t be able to say no.”

The Sunquest brand never really

the company was beyond repair,” said

Also launched last week, the Insider’s
Agent Guide focuses on product from
Sunquest, Holiday House, Intair Vacations and Fun Sun Vacations. It’s a modular program with 11 more Guides to
come, with monthly distribution.
For now the focus remains sun and
sand, but Miron hinted that Sunquest
has its sights set on the bigger picture.
“Travel agents play a huge role in the
decision-making process for their clients. And with our road map for the
next 36 months, that will include destinations anywhere in the world.”
ALBATours, meanwhile, has undergone big changes in recent months as
well, with an expanded line-up that will
include Ireland, Portugal, Greece, Turkey and Israel.
Known for its Italy program, ALBA
needed more year-round product to be
sustainable, said Firdosh Bulsara, VicePresident, Commercial.
In Italy, ALBA has added Sicily and
Sardinia and brought in flexible shortstay options so clients can combine the
modules into longer itineraries. In total
ALBA now offers flights to 19 destinations in Italy.
ALBA’s new 72-page dedicated Cruise
Collection 2015 brochure is also on its
way, with sailings in Europe, the Med
and across the Atlantic with MSC
Cruises. A 2015 Southern Hemisphere
brochure, also ready to go, includes Ecuador and the Galapagos, Peru, Argentina, Brazil and South Africa.
ALBA has an introductory commission offer worth 13%, valid until the end
of March.

TravelBrands has become a very integrated company, said DeMarinis.
“The only way we can be successful is
by being different,” he said. “We need
to stay one step ahead, and we need
to provide travel agents with the information they need. We’re going to be
different that way. The wholesaler of
the past is not going to be the wholesaler of the future. We are the ones
that want to grow with you.”

Club Med enriches
its rewards program

MONTREAL — Club Med’s rewards
program includes up to 15% commission on all-inclusive stays at all Club
Med properties worldwide in addition
to commissions on flights and additional services booked before departure.
The program also contains several

training sessions in travel agencies. But
also and above all, they accompany
several familiarization trips, organized
each year. And in 2015, Club Med plans
to increase significantly the numbers
of FAMs.
Throughout the year, Club Med

other VIP events that travel professionals might be attending to discover

In addition, the Free Nights Program
rewards each sale made by the agency. In
brief, for every amount of $6,000 sold in
stays and services for clients who travelled
during the Nov. 1, 2013 to Oct. 31, 2014
reference period, the agency earns one
free night. Thus, for a free one-week stay,
the travel agency must have sold $42,000
of Club Med stays and services during the
previous fiscal year.
When arriving at the resort, travel
partners will enjoy a VIP welcome and
dedicated privileges, reductions on
additional services, free WiFi and late

The dedicated website clubmed
agents.ca gives travel agents access to
information in order to promote any
destination: customizable e-mail, resort
sheet, pictures, product presentation.
Club Med will soon launch the Club

will get a chance to win free nights or
other rewards.
“Travel agencies are key business
partners for Club Med. In 2015, we are
enriching our rewards program, already
very complete, and it is important for
the sales team to make sure all the benefits are known. But also, and above all,
that the travel partners live the unique
Club Med experience.” said Jacinda
Lowry, National Sales Director.
There are six levels of the Travel Agencies Rewards Program, determined by
the gross sales (BV) with Club Med (for
clients who travelled during the Nov.
1 and Oct. 31 reference period of last
year) over a 12-month period. Each
category benefits from a specific commission rate and rewards. For instance,
agencies that have sold more than

Diocletian’s Palace in Split, Croatia
Trafalgar’s new CostSaver itineraries
showcase Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina
by Vawn Himmelsbach
Trafalgar has unveiled its CostSaver
2015 brochure featuring 37 value
itineraries, plus four ‘City Breaks’
throughout Europe and Britain that
include the services of an expert travel director.
Trafalgar’s CostSaver guided vacations can save clients up to 30 per cent
versus booking by themselves. Including all of the essentials, plus free time
and flexibility, clients can experience
the destination on their terms from as
low as $118 per night. Guests will also
enjoy daily breakfast and select dinners,
and can explore recommended regional
lunch spots on their own.
“Incredible savings, quality hotels, included meals, included must-see sights
plus free time and a name clients can
trust is what travellers can expect from
Trafalgar’s 2015 CostSaver program,”
says Doug Patterson, president of Trafalgar Canada.
“Agents can promote that our CostSaver trips are definite departures and
range from a weeklong getaway to an
immersive 28-day itinerary, so there is
something to suit every client’s budget.”
To celebrate the launch of the new
brochure, Trafalgar is offering an early
payment discount with savings of up
to $1,186 per couple on 2015 CostSaver
guided vacations when booked and
paid for by Jan. 15, 2015.
One of the company’s new itineraries
takes clients to three UNESCO World
Heritage Sites in two countries – both
with an abundance of history, landscapes and coastlines.
The 11-day ‘Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina’ trip begins in Zagreb, a medieval
European city, where clients will go on a
sightseeing tour with a local specialist to
the Cathedral, Archbishop’s Palace, St.
Mark’s Church and Opera House.
Travelling south from Croatia into
Bosnia and Herzegovina, clients will
stay one night each in the capital city,
Sarajevo — a city rich in religion and
cultural history, often called the Jerusalem of Europe — and Mostar, famous
for the Old Bridge, built by the Ottomans in the 16th century.
Clients will then head to the Dalmation Coast to spend two nights in
the medieval city of Dubrovnik, where
they’ll visit the main sights and have free
time to explore the city on their own.
Heading north along the Adriatic
Coast, clients will pass old fishing villages and new resorts before arriving
in Split, where they’ll visit the Roman
Emperor Diocletian’s Palace, Jupiter’s
Temple and the Cathedral.
Art lovers will enjoy an excursion to
Trogir, a picturesque stone town that
is a treasure trove of Renaissance and
Baroque buildings and Romanesque
churches. The journey ends with views
of waterfalls and lakes at the forested
National Park of Plitvice.

Another new trip in the new brochure
is ‘Wonders of Turkey,’ a 12-day trip that
begins and ends in Istanbul. Clients will
take in a full day of sightseeing in Istanbul with a local guide, visiting the Topkapi Palace Museum, Hippodrome and
Blue Mosque. A visit to the world’s oldest, largest Grand Bazaar is also on the
agenda, where clients can explore more
than 3,000 shops that cover 60 streets.
In Ankara, clients will visit the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations and
Ataturk’s Mausoleum before making
their way to Cappadocia, where they’ll
visit the underground city of Sarhatli,
the Pasabagi and the Red Valley.
Travelling south and then back
north, clients will spend one night
each in Konya, Pamukkale, Izmir and
Canakkale, visiting the unique cotton
castles formed by mineral springs, St.
Mary’s stone cottage and the wooden
horse in Troy along the way.
Trafalgar’s City Breaks allow clients to
choose the place, set the time and set
the pace — while benefitting from the
company’s group rates.
Clients can take in London, with

experience Paris, with its boulevards

Four City Breaks featured in the new
brochure include ‘London Week,’ ‘Paris

Paris & Rome.’
In ‘London & Paris,’ the “capital of
cool meets the capital of romance” on
this twin-city break, where clients travel
by Eurostar and are taken around London and walked down the ChampsÉlysées in Paris with local guides. And

Club Med Yucatan
Club Med Yucatan in Cancun officially
opens family-friendly Aguamarina
by Waheeda Harris
CANCUN — Forty years ago, Club Med
Yucatan was an early adopter in the
industry, building a resort on the tip
of the peninsula in the yet-unknown
tourist destination of Cancun. When it
opened in 1974, the view was an endless
stretch of white sand and blue sea, with
not a building in sight.
In 2014, Club Med is still here and recently opened its newest family suites
building, Aguamarina, and invited media and travel industry vets from North
America, Europe and Latin America to
celebrate the expansion.
Club Med’s official opening launched
with a nod to Mexico’s indigenous
peoples. Traditionally dressed in animal
skins and feathers, the Mayan locals
made offerings to the gods and provided a cultural accent to the ribbon cutting, by Club Med chairman and CEO
Henri Giscard D’Estaing and vice-president of Latin America Janyck Daudet.
“This is the perfect example of the
all-inclusive family offering from Club
Med,” said Xavier Mufraggi, CEO of
Club Med North America.
Aguamarina is a colourful threestorey building overlooking the property’s quiet third beach. And with its
own concierge, it offers many options
for guests inhabiting these “luxe but
easy to live” suites, according to interior designer Marc Hertrich, who with
his partner Nicolas Adnet from Studio
MHNA created the design concept for
this Mexican property as well as other
Club Med properties in Bali, Phuket,
Valmorel and Ixtapa.
For those who want to get active,
there’s a playground for the younger set
and several tennis courts, as well as sailboats and kayaks for all ages mere steps
from Aguamarina.
Las Cazuelas is an elegant buffet restaurant focusing on Mexican cuisine
and in the evening features a lively bar.
For guests wanting to access the other
restaurants, beaches or activities, there
is a regular shuttle from Aguamarina to
the main reception, or guests can easily
walk the paths, usually with many sightings of iguanas.
Carolyne Doyon, vice-president of
Club Med Canada, said Club Med is
well known in Canada. “We’ve had an
office in Canada since 1978 and Canadian travellers have had a long love affair with Club Med,” she said, adding
that since 2004 the upscale strategy of
Club Med has continued to attract repeat and new travellers to the brand’s
numerous resorts.
So far in 2014, 65% of Canadians travelling to Club Med properties are families, and TripAdvisor lists this property
as the No. 1 Mexican resort for families
in 2014.
“The increase in multigenerational
travel and family reunions has made
Club Med an appealing choice, and

with many travellers focused on active options during their holidays, Club
Med provides the options,” said Doyon.
At Club Med Yucatan, there are endless
options to be active such as sailing, snorkelling, water skiing, kayaking, tennis and
even trapeze, as well as options for the
younger set with a new Petit Club Med.
“All-inclusive isn’t just about value
for money, it’s also about convenience,”
added Mufraggi.
The Aguamarina rooms include 30
family club suites (50 square metres)
and 30 family deluxe suites (63 square
metres), all showcasing the designers’
penchant for saturated colours in red,
pink, blue, turquoise and purple. The
idea was to make these rooms feel like a
home away from home. And all rooms
have an ocean view, with either a balcony or ground-floor access to the beach.
All textiles and furnishings in the
suites were sourced from Mexican artisans and craftsmen, and give the rooms
a modern feel, thanks to the dark wood
furniture and oversized ceramic tile
floors, easily able to withstand the demands of family travel.
Two unique design styles are a fun
inclusion in the rooms: two gold Xs on
the wall, which appear like stitches to
connect wall colours, or kisses. Considering Club Med’s French heritage, it
seems Club Med Yucatan is hoping to
welcome as many guests as possible, offering kisses of welcome to Cancun.

Oasis Hotels & Resorts, an all-inclusive
vacation resort chain in Cancun and
Tulum, recently launched a new Travel
Agent Gateway designed with Canadian agents in mind: oasisconnect.ca.
The portal, oasisconnect.ca, is designed to help agents sell more Mexico,
while boosting commissions and building customer loyalty.
“We’re even offering Canadian agents
a chance to win a 60-inch HDTV, just
by going to oasisconnect.ca, registering
for website access by completing the
online registration form, and accepting
the official sweepstakes rules,” says Oasis
spokesman Enrique Klein. The drawing
will take place Jan. 15, 2015.
“Our goal now is to make it easy for
agents in Canada to continue booking Oasis resorts through our exclusive
partner Sunwing Vacations, to get them
all the latest information on all of the
properties, and to make sure they feel
great about selling our new and improved Oasis experience.”
Oasis has spent $100 million on renovations, including numerous upgrades,
refurbishments, new food and beverage
options, and enhancements to develop
distinct personalities for each resort.
Every Oasis resort offers the traditional
all-inclusive experience, but with expanded dining options, from buffetstyle meals to convenient, casual bites,
poolside treats and top-tier cuisine.
“Oasis is easier to sell than ever,”
says Klein. “For clients looking for
non-stop entertainment we’ve added
the wow factor to our resorts, with
Vegas-style productions, a burlesque
club, Coyote lounge with live bands,
resident DJs on the beach and more.
Oasis also knows what families want,
like kids’ clubs, child-friendly facilities
and playgrounds, and pools designed
with family fun in mind. There’s even
a pirate cruise included in the family
resort experience.”
Agents can take an online training
program to become a certified Oasis Specialist. “The more agents learn
about Oasis Hotels & Resorts, the more
they will earn,” says Klein.
The portal offers an array of marketing resources that showcase Cancun
and the Oasis experience, including
customizable ads, flyers and templates
that can be downloaded and printed or
emailed to clients.

them refreshed and re-energized — a
perfect way to exorcise the excesses of
the festive season.
These are available as standalone packages or can be combined with a range of
other touring options in India and Nepal.
India is known as the land of spiritual
wellness and is a well-developed destination for spa tourism. Customers can
rejuvenate body and mind as they take
in the scenery of the Himalayas or listen
to the gently lapping waves of the Indian Ocean. A professional team helps
to ensure that clients achieve and maintain a sense of wellbeing throughout
their trip.
Clients can relax in a Himalayan retreat and rediscover their inner mind,
body and soul with the company’s
Ananda package. This luxury spa targets the client’s personal goals with its
motto of ‘Swastha Jeevan Sandhya,”
which translates as “healthy lifestyle approach with assistance.”
Travelpack also offers a variety of destinations that promote health and wellness, including Oberoi Wildflower Hall,
Mashobra and the Moksha Himalaya
Spa & Resort.
The Moksha Himalaya Spa & Resort is
situated in the Shivalik mountain range
amidst tall pine trees beside the Kaushalya river. The resort offers a unique
arrival experience by Swiss gondola,
which takes clients across the valley
over the river in eight minutes to experience luxury in the lap of nature.
For the yogi, nothing beats Travelpack’s Yoga Tour from Delhi to Haridwar, where clients are taken through
various yoga teachings under the guidance of a trained yoga instructor. The
program offers a beginner’s course, as
well as a more in-depth course for those
with more experience.
Coming soon, Travelpack will also be
offering wellness and spa vacations in
Panama and Costa Rica.

Transat pulls off
Cuba stunt on the
streets of Toronto
MONTREAL — Late last month, Transat
invited Torontonians to experience a
taste of Cuba through a stunt.
The event took place in the streets
of Toronto where a specially-designed
taxi, painted in Transat’s signature blue
and driven by an actor posing as a cab
driver, put passengers into comical, Cuban-inspired scenarios.
Several shared the taxi with the driver’s friends, others were encouraged to
sing and dance, etc.
Those who played along were rewarded with a one-week, all-inclusive vacation
package for two to Varadero, Holguin,
Cayo Coco or Cayo Santa Maria.
“Canadians love Cuba. It’s an important
destination for us,” said Geneviève LeBrun,
Senior Director, Marketing, Transat Tours
Canada. “This stunt replicated everything
we love about the country – the music, the
warmth of its people, the sense of fun – all
the while echoing our brand promise: Sun
for everyone.”

Cameras hidden inside the car captured the reactions of passengers, who
were sometimes surprised and often
delighted by this unexpected encounter
and its incredible effect.

Historic Philadelphia
now a great getaway
for food lovers
TORONTO — Philadelphia, the ‘birthplace of America’, home to five major
league sports teams, and the “largest indoor flower show in the world’, is also a
great destination for food lovers, according to Donna Schorr, Director of Communications, Visit Philadelphia.
Speaking to a group of about two
dozen writers last week at Dish Cooking Studio in Toronto, Schorr said the
city has many award-winning chefs and
restaurants, 200 BYOB (Bring Your Own
Bottle or Bring Your Own Booze) restaurants, food tours, farmer markets,
wine trails, craft breweries and beer gardens, and that you can find “great food
for any size wallet”.
“The best way to gauge the Philadelphia food scene,” explained Philadelphiabased author and blogger Drew Lazor,
who also spoke at the event, “is to go to a
BYOB restaurant. The chefs can focus on
the food and personality of the restaurant
and not worry about the red tape that
comes with having a liquor license.”
One of those BYOB restaurants is
Noord, which specializes in Northern European cuisine. Chef and owner Joncarl
Lachman, who was at the event and prepared one of his signature dishes – clams
and zuurkol (sauerkraut or sour cabbages
as he calls them) – says he makes food
that is near and dear to his heart.
“Because of what’s happening in Copenhagen, it’s opening the minds to
Northern European foods and making
people pay attention to us,” Lachman
says. He aims for a relaxed, cozy environment and food to match.
“The biggest compliment I can get is
when people say the food tastes like my
mother’s cooking,” says the Philadelphia
native who has Dutch ancestry. In an age
of celebrity chefs, Lachman prefers the
personal touch, often greeting guests at
the door.
The city is only a 90-minute flight from
Toronto or a one day drive, and is 25 blocks
river to river making it an ideal walking
town. Located between New York City and

Spanish GDP is expected to increase
by about 1.2% in 2014, after years of contracting or stagnating growth. Tourism is
playing an important role in the revival, as
Spain hosts over 58 million visitors a year
and tourism represents 9% of GDP.
“Spain is a global power in cultural
resources,” continues Gómez-Mújica
Sanz. “And gastronomy is one of the
most distinctive elements of Spanish
culture and a key draw for tourists. The
culinary offering is based on tradition
and innovation.”
The gala dinner showcased Spanish
delights created by Chef Michael Caballo
from Edulis restaurant in Toronto including albacore tuna with tomato ‘chorizo’, pig
trotter with squid ‘migas’ and duck breast
with foie gras. Everything was delicious and
paired with lovely Spanish wines.
“Spain is a gastronomical paradise
and eating those foods within the cultural context makes you a part of that
place. Spain is unique because you always have that expectation of quality. I
should know because I have spent years
eating my way through Spain,” says master of ceremonies, TV host and food
journalist Annie Sibonney.

Lowest hotel rates make
January and February the ideal
time to visit New York City
NEW YORK — NYC & Company, New York City’s official
marketing, tourism and partnership organization, encourages visitors to book travel to New York City during January,
February and March 2015 to take advantage of restaurant
and theatre savings, as well as lower hotel room rates.
NYC Restaurant Week will return this winter Feb. 16-March 6
with reservations opening on Feb. 2. During Broadway Week (Jan.
20-Feb. 5; tickets on sale Jan. 9) and Off-Broadway Week (Feb.

New York
23-March 8; tickets on sale Feb. 9), visitors and New Yorkers can
enjoy two-for-one tickets to nearly all theatrical productions.
January and February boast the lowest average daily hotel
room rate – typically 40% lower than the average, which gives
New Yorkers and visitors a chance to save on their hotel stay.
For the best available rates of the year, visit nycgo.com/hotels
and reserve through NYC & Company’s exclusive hotel booking engine, Booking.com.
“With special restaurant and theater promotions along
with the most attractive hotel rates of the year, there are even
more reasons to visit New York City and enjoy the vibrancy,
energy and excitement the five boroughs have to offer,” said
Fred Dixon, president and CEO of NYC & Company. “The
winter is an ideal time to experience New York City at a more
affordable price, and we encourage visitors to book their trips
now for an unforgettable time in New York City.”
January and February are traditionally slower periods for tourism
in New York City, which make it a perfect time to visit. In its 23rd
year, NYC Restaurant Week is the first and largest dining program
of its kind. The event offers New Yorkers and visitors three-course
prix-fixe lunches for $25 and three-course prix-fixe dinners for $38
(excluding beverages, gratuities and taxes). In the ninth season of
Broadway Week and the eleventh season of Off-Broadway Week,
the two programs have also become popular events, offering twofor-one tickets to popular theatrical productions.
