ARCHITECTURAL MILLWORK
ARCHITECTURAL MILLWORK SUSTAINABLE DESIGN For centuries, American hardwoods have been appreciated for their beauty, warmth, durability, and lasting value. Today’s consumers are adding “green” and “sustainable” to the reasons they choose floors, cabinets, and millwork made from domestic hardwoods. Sustainability is all about meeting today’s needs without compromising the needs for future generations. MIRRORING NATURAL FORCES In a hardwood forest, trees compete for the water and sunlight that come through the forest canopy. Koetter Woodworking carefully harvests individual trees, creating openings which allow more precipitation, sunlight and nutrients to reach the forest floor. This single-tree selection method of harvesting reduces competition and improves growing conditions. In practice for decades, this mirrors the natural process of single trees or small groups of trees perishing and falling on their own. Sustainable OUR COMMITMENT TO THE FUTURE For over 50 years, Koetter Woodworking has been committed to the sustainability of our industry’s timber base. We personally oversee every aspect of the harvest from our company timber grounds, as well as purchased standing timber, acknowledging BMP’s (Best Management Practices) and all recognized harvesting and silvicultural criteria. In U.S. forests, we grow about twice as much hardwood as we harvest each year. What’s more, trees renew themselves on their own, and in great abundance! With far more hardwood growth than there is harvesting, American hardwoods are the definition of environmentally friendly, green, and sustainable – today and for generations to come. Tom Koetter, Founder, and his grandson, Mason. Not only does domestic sourcing provide faster response times and more opportunity for customization specific to your needs, but it also promotes job growth and community development right here in the USA! Koetter Woodworking’s Primed Fiberboard mouldings are coated with a high quality water based acrylic latex primer. Any high quality water, oil, or lacquer based top coats will work to produce a good finished product. (For best results, follow the paint manufacturer’s instructions regarding product use.) PRIMED FIBERBOARD INSTALLATION GUIDELINES • Store mouldings on the jobsite flat, and up off the floor to prevent material from getting wet and drawing moisture. • Prior to installation, mouldings should be stored in room conditions for a minimum of 48 hours. Contrary to popular belief, MDF can expand and contract due to changes in relative humidity, so acclimation is very important. • When ripping, cutting or routing, carbide tipped blades and/or cutter heads are strongly recommended. • Pneumatic fastening systems with the air pressure set at 90 – 120 PSI works best. • The types of fasteners that work best are 16-18 gauge finish nails. Smooth shank nails are not recommended. However, it is up to the installer to decide what works best for his own application. • MDF is a man-made product that is excellent for face nailing (1” from ends and ¼” from edges is recommended). Edge nailing is not recommended. Koetter Woodworking’s Primed Fiberboard mouldings have an exclusive finish process with a double prime and double profile-sand manufacturing process which results in a smoother finish, decreasing in-field finishing time and associated costs. For best results: • Fill and seal all nail holes. • Lightly sand with fine grit sandpaper or a piece of Scotchbrite. • Wipe down the surface of the moulding that is going to be painted with a tack cloth to remove any excess dust left from sanding. • Apply the first coat of premium paint. • Lightly sand again with fine grit sandpaper or Scotchbrite to help the second coat of paint adhere to the first. • Wipe down the moulding with a tack cloth to remove any dust from sanding. • Apply a second coat of premium paint. • The use of a fast drying adhesive, such as our KwikBond Adhesive and Activator, helps to prevent the separation of mitered corners. Another option for applying casing around doors and windows is to use casing corner blocks. In this application, the use of glue is not required ARCHITECTURAL M I L L W O R K 57 GESSO-COATED PINE CASINGS PFP WM356 11/16" x 21/4" x 14' PFP WM356 84 11/16" x 21/4" x 84" PFP 22112-C2-CA PFP 2288-E2-CA /16" x 31/2" x 15' 11 /16" x 23/4" x 15' 11 PFP 22112-B-CA /16" x 31/2" x 15' 11 PFP 2288-CA 11/16" x 23/4" x 15' PFP 2288-CA 86 11/16" x 23/4" x 86" PFP 2288-B-CA PFP 22112-W-CA 58 11 /16" x 31/2" x 15' K O E T T E R W O O DWORKING, INC. • www.koetterwoodworking.com /16" x 23/4" x 15' 11 ARCHITECTURAL M I L L W O R K 59 GESSO-COATED PINE BASES PFP 18232-CB 9 /16" x 71/4" x 16' 60 PFP 18168-CB 9 /16" x 51/4" x 16' K O E T T E R W O O DWORKING, INC. • www.koetterwoodworking.com PFP 18136-CB 9 /16" x 41/4" x 16' PFP 18104-CB 9 /16" x 31/4" x 16' GESSO-COATED PINE BASES 1624-A 1 /2" x 3/4" PFP 17168-EB 17 /32" x 51/4" x 16' PFP WM663 9 /16” x 31/4” x 16’ PFP WM623 9 /16" x 31/4" x 16' ARCHITECTURAL M I L L W O R K 61 GESSO-COATED PINE CROWNS Degree shown on crown mouldings = spring angle 125/32" projection 225/64" height 23/4" projection 31/16" projection PFP WM51 9 /16" x 31/4" x 16' (34.5 ) height 31/2" O PFP WM48 9 /16" x 41/4" x 16' (35.5 ) height 49/32" O PFP WM45 9 /16" x 51/4" x 16' (34.5 ) O 62 K O E T T E R W O O DWORKING, INC. • www.koetterwoodworking.com GESSO-COATED PINE CROWNS, JAMBS AND STOPS 329/32" Degree shown on crown mouldings = spring angle projection 31/16" height 221/32" height 39/16" projection PFP 17136-A-CR 17 /32" x 41/4" x 16' (45 ) PFP 18168-A-CR 9 /16" x 51/4" x 16' (43.5 ) O O PFP 21148-J 21 /32" x 45/8" x 12' PFP 21148-JL 812132 21 /32" x 45/8" x 8121/32" PFP 1344-STOP 13 /32" x 13/8" x 81" 11/32 4 5/8 PFP 33148-JLSP 8134 11/32" x 45/8" x 813/4" ARCHITECTURAL M I L L W O R K 63 PRODUCT SPECIES CHART Stock species are subject to change without notice. 64 K O E T T E R W O O DWORKING, INC. • www.koetterwoodworking.com PRODUCT SPECIES CHART Stock species are subject to change without notice.
