Do not press eyeguard except with eye area
of face for operation of sight. Sight emits illumination which can be detected by
enemy if eyeguard is used improperly.

When zeroing the sight to a loaded M72A 1
Rocket Laun cher (one that has never been
fired) on a 25 meter range, be extremely
careful to prevent accidental firing of the
weapon .
•
The contents of the mercury batteries are
extremely irritating to the eyes, oral , and
nasal passages, therefore, be careful when
discarding the batteries. To prevent exp losion, batteries should not be disposed of
by burning.
•
Do not short circuit.
•
Do not recharge.

•
Do not store the night vision sight with the
batteries in it.
•
Always replace both Mercury batteries at
the same time.
•
Used Mercury batteries must be turned in
to the Property Disposal Officer in accordance with TM 755-200.
•
Do NOT use batteries which look bulged or
have burst. Turn these batteries in to the
Property Disposal Officer as stated above.
Contact your unit safety officer for help
with large quantities of bulged or burst batteries.
LITHIUM BATTERIES (BA-5567)
The lithium battery used in this equipment can be
hazardous if misused or tampered with before,
during, and after discharge. The following precautions must be strictly observed to prevent injury to
personnel or damage to equipment.
•
DO NOT heat, incinerate, crush, puncture,
dissemble, or otherwise mutilate the batteries.

DO NOT short circuit.
•
DO NOT recharge.
•
DO NOT bypass internal fuse or replace
with a fuse of a different rating. Replacement fuses are packed two per every ten
batteries.
•
DO NOT store lithium batteries in unused
equipment over 30 days.
•
TURN OFF the equipment immediately if
you detect the battery compartment becoming unduly hot or rapidly increasing in
temperature, hear battery venting (hissing
sound), or smell irritating sulfur dioxide
gas. Remove and dispose of the battery only after it is cool (30 - 60 minutes).
•
DO NOT use carbon dioxide extinguishers
on exposed lithium metal fires. Flood the
burning material with water or use graphite
type compounds or extinguishers on burning lithium.
•
ALWAYS replace both lithium batteries at
the same time.

You can tell the difference between Mercury battery, BA-1567,
and Lithium battery, BA-5567, by
the plastic sleeve. The Lithium battery has a black band around the
top and bottom of the plastic
s leeve. The Lithium batte ry may be
disposed of only in a sanitary IandtiII.
CORROSIVE CHEMICAL FI RST-AID

Immediately flush the eyes with water and
continue to flush for 15 minutes if corrosive
chemicals contact the eyes.
The first few seconds after contact
are critical. Immediately flushing
the eyes may prevent permanent
damage.
An eyewash fountain is preferred ,
but an eyewash hose or any other
source of water should be used in
an emergency.
Alkali (base) burns are usually
more serious than acid burns.

Strong chemicals burn the skin rapidly.
There is o time to waste. Flush the area
with water immediately. Remove and
discard clothing , socks and shoes (obtain
other clothes and shoes). Continue to flood
the area while clothing is being removed.

Consult warnings on the product label for
full first-aid information. Give the label information to the attending physician .
Neutralizers and solvents (alcohol , etc.)
should not be used by the first aider. The
spread of skin absorbing corrosive poison ,
like phenol, can cause death. Don't depend
on spilled chemicals to evaporate from
your clothes . Exposure to skin can kill you .

Scope
This manual contains operating and maintenance
instructions for Night Vision Sight, Individual
Served Weapon AN /PVS-4 (sight).

Recommendations (EIR)
If your Night Vision Sight, Individual Served
Weapon AN/PVS-4 needs improvement , let us
know. Send us an EIR. You , the user are the only
one who can tell us what you don't like about your
equipment. Let us know why you don 't like the
design. Put it on an SF 368 (Quality Deficiency
Report). Mail it to Commander, US Army Communications - Electronics Command and Fort
Monmouth, ATTN : AMSEL-ME-MP, Fort Monmouth, New Jersey 07703-5007. We'll send you a
reply.

Administrative Storage
Administrative Storage (TM 740-90-1) of equipment issued to and used by Army activities will
have preventive maintenance performed in accor1·2
dance with the PMCS charts before storing. When
removing the equipment from administrative
storage , the PMCS should be performed to assure
operational readiness.

Destruction of Army Electronics
Materiel
Destruction of Army electronics materiel to prevent enemy use shall be in accordance with TM
750-244-2.

Hand Receipt (·H R) Manual
Use the hand receipt in TM 11-5855-213-10HR for
property accountablity of Night Vision Sight , Individual Served Weapon AN /PVS-4.

EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION
AND DATA
Description
The AN/PVS-4 (fig. 1-1) is a protable, batteryoperated electro-optical instrument used for
observation and aimed fire of weapons at night. It
amplifies reflected light such as moonlight,
starlight, and skyglow so that the viewed scene
becomes clearly visible to the operator. The sight
does not emit visible or infrared light (except from
the eye-piece) that can be detected by the enemy.

It is used on the M 14 and M 16 rifles. M60 machinegun, M67 recoilless rifle, M72A 1 rocket launcher,
and M79 and M203 (M16) grenade launchers.
Mounting brackets are provided for each type
weapon. Grenade launcher brackets have provision for super elevation. A detailed description of
the sight is in TM 11-5855-213-24&P.
