ning of the Bayview to Mackinac
Race. This year, it’s the “Bell’s Beer
Bayview to Mackinac Race.” On behalf
of the membership of Bayview Yacht
Club and the Board of Governors, we
welcome all returning and first time
sailors, families, friends, and fans to our
jewel of July. Lake Huron
and this race have tested
sailors, from the first timer
to the seasoned “Old Goat,”
on their seamanship skills,
endurance and team work.
Sailing is no longer the
Sport of Kings. Our racers come from all
walks of life and water is a great equalizer
of people.
This great race continues to attract
sailors and boats from around the world.
Our “Yellow Brick” race tracking has
opened our race up to worldwide viewing, making this race not only a Michigan tradition and family event, but also
an international event that attracts over
a hundred thousand people in the form
of spectators and race participants, not
counting the half a million web hits.
We would like to thank the City of
Port Huron for continuing to recognize
the economic impact our race has for the
community and structuring the weeklong Blue Water Fest to enhance our
event. We would further like to thank
the City of Mackinac Island and all the
people from the workers to the residents who make our annual trek up the
lake memorable and “truly somewhere
in time.”
As with any event of this magnitude, our sponsors are paramount to its
success, and this year is no different. To
our title sponsor, Larry Bell, and Bell’s
Beer, thank you for signing a three-year
contract; it gives us stability. To Yellow Brick Tracking: your multi-year
deal will ensure our families and
friends have a bird’s eye view of the
race. This year, we are excited to welcome aboard our newest sponsor, The
Grand Hotel, who has signed a multiyear deal: this will be the new home
of our world-famous Mackinac Island
Party. Thanks to Acura Car Company,
Line Honors-Yacht Racing Outfitters and
Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort. A special mention to our returning sponsors,
Doyle Sails, always a strong supporter of
sailors, Flame Furnace, Gary Marowske
and his team, and Sheplers
Ferry, the official line to
Mackinac Island. Bayview
Yacht Club members, the
Board of Governors and I
thank you and appreciate
your sponsorship and support. May you
be supported through your affiliation
with Bayview Yacht Club!
Bayview Yacht Club is known for
exciting events and this year is no
different. On June 30, Bayview
Yacht Club will be holding a Mackinac Race Charity Night and Preview
Party: this event will run in conjunction with the annual Summer Party,
and we hope to raise $50,000 for
local charities while highlighting the
race. This inaugural event will be a
night to remember. Also, this year we
are again participating in the Pro Team
Challenge: four boats will be randomly
selected to represent the Detroit Lions,
Detroit Tigers, Detroit Red Wings and
The Pistons. The winning boat will be
honored at a game, and outfitted with
team merchandise
At Bayview Yacht Club, the racing
and the fun never stop, as we pride ourselves on many events both on and off the
water throughout the year. Please check
out our web page at www.byc.com for
calendar dates and events.
To the winners of the Bell’s Beer
Bayview to Mackinac race, we will see
you in September at the awards dinner. To
all of you, I look forward to seeing you in
Port Huron on the race course or on the
island. To all sailors, good luck sail, fast
and sail safe.

wrote the article to the left almost 10 years ago to the
day. I was the Mackinac Race Chairman and one of the
assigned responsibilities was to write a small piece for
the summer Burgee, our official Race Program. I wrote about
how important the Mackinac Race was to me, and how that
had compelled me to volunteer to take its helm. I speculated
that, somewhere, there was a bright-eyed boy who would
someday take its reins.
I was right. I have met that boy. I don’t know who he is
yet, but I know he is there. Bayview Yacht Club is full of
candidates, from the youngsters in the Junior Sailing program, the legacy children who race because that is what their
families have always done, or the new members who came
in through the “Learn to Sail” program. We have college AllAmericans, Olympic participants, America’s Cup sailors and
even a Rolex Yachtsmen of the Year. Someday, more than
one of them will become Mackinac Race Chairmen. They
will do this because this race is compelling, competitive, creates so many fine memories for our participants and fans, and
deserving of the attention the chairman is required to give.
Let me take this opportunity to welcome you all to this
extraordinary event, and to thank the many volunteers and
sponsors who make it possible. And let me also thank that
boy, who I know will do a marvelous job.•

he Straits of Mackinac Society was founded by Bayview Yacht Club to honor all
Mackinac Race Committee personnel who served with untiring dedication for 15
years to Bayview and the sailing fraternity. Without their efforts there would not be a
starting cannon, or any race at all.
Known as “Old Forts,” we thank the many men and women who deserve the proper
recognition by honoring them with membership in the Straits of Mackinac Society.•

Premiere Detroit Event Planner Joins Team Bayview
Keeping Our
Witz About Us
by Sandra Svoboda
W
hen Jonathan Witz got
a phone call last year from Commodore
Jeff Henderson asking him to join the
Bayview Yacht Club team, the long-time
event planner and sponsorship manager
considered it a high compliment.
Jonathan Witz
Witz had been organizing and
operating the City of Port Huron’s Blue
Water Fest for two years, which meant
he’d worked with the Bayview leadership since the festival and the Bell’s Beer
Bayview Mackinac Race were the same
weekend.
“It wasn’t always easy,” Witz says,
“because I was representing the city’s interests. There were discussions over whose
sponsors had priority, for example.”
But it wasn’t Witz’s first time “off
the dock” in festival management. His
company, Jonathan Witz & Associates
has created and currently produces two
signature events, including The Motown
Winter Blast, the official celebration of
Super Bowl XL, and Ford Arts, Beats &
Eats (which Witz co-founded in 1998 with
Oakland County Executive, L. Brooks Patterson). In addition, JWA has been hired
to manage or produce many other high
profile events in southeast Michigan, including WYCD’s Downtown Hoedown;
Detroit River Days and the NCAA Big
Dance in Detroit in 2009.
Witz and Henderson inked a deal that has Witz recruiting and managing sponsors for Bayview sailing events. He organized the first Mackinac
Charity preview, the June 30 “Sailing Under the Stars,” which raised money
for local non-profit organizations. Witz’s has also partnered with a longtime, respected Detroit public relations firm, Marx Layne, to handle media
relations for the club.
Working with Bayview creates a relationship that Witz
says reflects respect among everyone. “When you don’t
always agree with them and yet they respect how you
handle the situation, that’s a great situation,” Witz says.
“The thing that most honored me about Bayview being
interested in hiring me was the fact that we didn’t always
agree with each other, yet still had respect for each other.”
In his first few months as the club’s “sponsorship guy,”
Witz has helped extend title sponsor Bell’s Beer for another
three years of Mackinac support. He’s also recruited new
sponsors– Acura and the Soaring Eagle Casino, for example–who see
sailing as a sport that connects with their products.
Witz’s work means financial and in-kind support for Bayview events
and new markets and exposure for his clients. “Bayview offers access to a
real fun, active, generally high to upper middle class demographic who are
willing to follow their passions and interests and are good candidates for
products,” Witz says.
Witz, not a sailor himself, brings a wealth of event management experience that he’s gained over the last 15 years as he’s emerged as one of the

region’s premiere festival organizers.
We talked with him about his background, his plans for Bayview and his
philosophy of sponsorship management.
Bayview Yacht Club: How did you get into the event
and sponsorship business?
Jonathan Witz: I came to Michigan in 1989. I had been
working as general manager of a night club in Chicago
when the owner met with Chuck Forbes from the State
Theatre in Detroit. We looked at doing a night club in the
theater district, and that’s what brought me to Detroit and
got my career going. I managed the State Theatre for 3 +
years and then I started my own business in 1993.
BYC: What kind of events did you do?
JW: Detroit Newspapers was actually my first client. I did
their holiday parties and I did a couple of events for Toyota.
Also I ended up in 1994 working on the World Cup, putting a small festival together that was noticed. It wasn’t successful because there was a
huge heat wave during the World Cup. In 1998 I got a break. A gentleman
who was an accountant at the State Theater became L. Brooks Patterson’s
director of arts, culture and film. So Brooks said, “I want to do a festival in
downtown Pontiac.” And they brought me in.
BYC: How quickly did things happen?
JW: I said I needed a 90-day research period but in five weeks Brooks
made it a top initiative in his state of the county address in February. Things
with me. I thought I could do well with
sponsorship but I would need leads from
sailing industry people. I thought there
were people in my world that I could help
bring to the table.
Most of all I thought I could help
improve the relationships and the communications with Bayview’s current
sponsors and that we would provide a
good experience for them, with focused
efforts on providing new publicity and
creative activation to help promote the
partnership and get their best out of their
Bayview support. I approached Marx
Layne and asked if they would work
under Jonathan Witz and Associates. So
I was able to bring my sponsorship experience, my marketing experience and take
a top Detroit PR firm and take their expertise and make sure there were going to
be no public relations holes. Even though
I had PR experience, to have a specific
agency, a partnership of JWA and ML,
is I think, delivering Bayview a really
good value for the race. It’s been a new
experience for me. In fact I’m looking
forward to going on a sailboat for the fist
time in 20 some years.
BYC: How different is it
to work on events and
“At every
sponsorship for the sailing
community compared to
event I’m
your previous work?
JW: I do think the most interesting aspect
involved in,
of the sponsorship selling is the fact that
there generally
there are some in-kind, traded traditions
that I’m learning the importance of. This
has to be some
is a really true statement. It’s not always

much weight and value. I think that’s been
the biggest learning curve.
BYC: What’s been the most
fulfilling part of your work
with Bayview?
JW: Helping to put together a three-year
renewal for Bell’s Beer. They are the sighad to happen quickly from there. He got
nature club sponsor, and I think I would base the entire partnership on being
Chrysler and Kmart involved as sponsors,
able to make that deal happen. We were able to enhance that deal and I think
and I got Pepsi and Flagstar Bank inadd more value to both parties. That’s No. 1, and I think No. 2 would be
volved. We ended up getting the funding
developing the “Sailing Under the Stars” concept which is to take a core
together which is a tough part of it but

waterways show off incredible colors of cobalt,
turquoise and sparkling sapphire. The stunning hues
restore a sense of freshness and tranquility that can
get lost in the current of everyday life. Green parks,
boardwalks and wide beaches bordering the shoreline
entice visitors and locals to lounge along the water and
breathe in the natural beauty.
Though an attraction all its own, the crystal blue water
is not the only attraction Port Huron has to offer. Summertime festivals, events and concerts bring laughter
and entertainment to its beautiful shores. July brings
thousands of spectators to join the fun during Blue
Water Fest and one of Port Huron’s biggest signature
events, the Bayview Mackinac Race. The Blue Water
Fest kicks off with a grand parade then live music acts,
carnival, food and activity continue for the weekend.
A spectacular array of sailboats will line the Black
River then depart,
as the City of Port
Huron is the starting point for the
Bayview Mackinac Race, one
of the world’s
largest freshwater sailboat races.
Another boating
event returning
to Port Huron for its second year is the Port Huron/
Sarnia International Off shore Powerboat Race. Catch
all the action as you watch explosive powerboats
thunder through the St. Clair River, all vying to be the
fastest on the water.
A bustling farmers’ market is featured every Tuesday
and Saturday at Port Huron’s Great Lakes Maritime
Center at Vantage Point. The Maritime Center is one
of the best spots for boat watchers to view 1,000 foot
Great Lakes and Ocean freighters traveling along the
St. Clair River. The center is always a whirlwind of

“One Of The Top ten Islands
In The World.”~Conde Nast Traveler
What to Wear
Day–Smart casual, blue
jeans or khakis and
T-shirts. Bring rain
gear and a good pair
of walking shoes.
Nightlife–Casual city
chic. Upscale resort attire.
Black tie for fine dining.
Getting Around
Mackinac
Island
It’s an Island suspended in a forgotten, more
innocent time. Relive the simple pleasures of life.
Horse-drawn taxis are a way of life and a fun way to get around. Whistling or waving down a taxi is not the way to
get a ride. Taxis are radio dispatched and can be ordered by calling (906) 847-3323, ask the front desk staff or your
bartender to order one up, or stop at the downtown taxi office on Main Street at end of Astor Street. Rates start at
$4.75/person each way.
Walking–The Island is very walkable. Enjoy strolling Main and Market Streets which encompass about five city blocks.
The Island circumference is 8.2 level miles and takes about 3.5 hours to circumnavigate. Walking up to Grand Hotel
or on the lake shore to Mission Point Resort takes around 15-20 minutes. For a quicker solution, renting bicycles or a
“drive-yourself-buggy” are both ideal to view the shoreline trail.
Biking–Biking the eight mile island circumference is a time-honored tradition. Visitors may bring bicycles, and bike
rentals abound. The M-185 shoreline drive has mile markers and signs pointing out natural features. Enjoy the architectural riding tours of East and West Bluff homes. Guided tours available.
Shopping
This is a shopper’s paradise! Four small malls
encompass everything from souvenirs to the
exotic. The Gate House Courtyard Shops overflow
with great finds. Shop downtown’s great clothing,
toy, and jewelry stores, plus fine home gifts and
souvenir shops. Contemporary art galleries
sell the works of local artists.
Fudge Shops
Fudge remains the island’s most popular and
tastiest souvenir. The flavors are unworldly. Follow
the mouthwatering aromas to many of the island’s
shops for a taste and a fudge making demonstration.
Eateries
From the historic hotels and their world-renowned
chefs to the quaint little eateries tucked away in
special places around the island, explore the wide
range of cuisines. Prices range from economical to
extravagant. The Mackinac Island Dining Guide
is available at the Tourism Bureau on Main Street
or online from www.mackinacisland.org.
The Great Outdoors
Mackinac Island State Park–Admired
for its natural beauty with miles of aweinspiring nature trails for hiking, biking
and horseback riding. Great variety of
niches supporting over six hundred species
of plants, wildflowers and birds. Visit Arch
Rock, Devil’s Kitchen, Sugar Loafe, and
Skull Cave. Picnic tables. Complimentary
maps available at Mackinac Island Tourism
Bureau downtown. Most paved trails are
easily accessed for persons with disabilities.
Visit www.mackinacparks.com
Marquette Park–Beneath Fort Mackinac’s
ramparts. Newly re-designed playground.
Larger-than-life statue of Father Marquette.

Grand Hotel
Welcomes You to Celebrate
Their 125th Anniversary
As a location for a
summertime family
get-together or romantic
getaway,
few places are more
special than Grand
Hotel. This worldrenowned
resort
hotel has been
family owned for
79 years, and sits
majestically above
the Straits of Mackinac on Michigan’s spectacular Mackinac Island.
Never has the time to experience this truly one-ofa-kind hotel been better than in 2012, when Grand
Hotel celebrates its 125th anniversary.
Exceptional accommodations now include
Laura Bush Suite, Founder’s Suite
No two of Grand Hotel’s 385 guest rooms are
alike, with each decorated by renowned designer
Carleton Varney of Dorothy Draper & Co. Inc. (New
York), the oldest established interior design firm in
the United States. The grandest accommodations of
all are the more than three dozen themed Named
Rooms and Two-Bedroom Suites, from the Lincoln
Suite to the Hollywood Suite. The most recent additions are the Laura Bush Suite, the sixth First Lady
Suite at the hotel; and the Founder’s Suite, featuring
furniture from the estate of Francis Stockbridge, a
U.S. Senator from 1887 to 1894 who once owned
the land on which Grand Hotel now sits.
Grand Hotel offers many activities which help
make any vacation truly unforgettable: biking
around the island, swimming in the Esther Williams
swimming pool, a visit to Astor’s Salon and Spa,
5 6 /// 2 0 1 2 S u m m e r B u r g e e
or a round on one of Michigan’s most scenic golf
courses, The Jewel, where a horse-drawn carriage
takes you to the back nine featuring woodlands and
five acres of ponds. Stroll downtown to Mackinac
Island or visit one of the hotel’s many shops for
resort wear and accessories, fine art, jewelry, books,
children’s toys and games. Adults can enjoy a bit of
free time while the kids are involved in one of many
complimentary children’s programs, which feature
scavenger hunts, rock collecting on the beach,
games on the front lawn, arts and crafts, hayrides,
tours of Fort Mackinac, and the island’s butterfly
houses.
Grand dining includes many casual options
Throughout the history of Grand Hotel, dining
has been an exceptional feature of the guest experience. In addition to the legendary Main Dining
Room overlooking the Straits of Mackinac, options
include The Gate House, just down the hill from the
hotel; The Jockey Club at the Grand Stand, overlooking the first tee of The Jewel; Woods, situated
in an opulent Tudor mansion a short horse-drawn
carriage ride from the hotel; and the newest Grand
Hotel restaurant, Cawthorne’s Village Inn, located
in downtown Mackinac Island.
For as long as it’s been welcoming guests, Grand
Hotel has been known for its porch, the world’s
longest. In the early days of the hotel, the porch
was the principal meeting place for all of Mackinac
Island, a promenade for island romantics. Today,
it’s a relaxing spot for enjoying cocktails, a good
book, or just to gaze out at the Straits of Mackinac.
Every year since 1887, Grand Hotel has welcomed countless guests and families to Mackinac
Island. Grand Hotel welcomes you to celebrate their
125th Anniversary in 2012. •

Niagara. Thus, the Griffon departed with only
a skeleton crew onboard, the pilot, Luc, and
five others.
The Griffon was last seen by Indians in
the northern reaches of Lake Michigan. The
Indians advised the pilot, Luc, to stay near
the shore because the straits of Mackinac had
many shallows and shoals that the ship could
strike. The fate of the Griffon after this meeting
is debatable. Many believe the ship came into a
severe storm and sank with her crew onboard.
Others speculate that the crew either stole the
furs and sank the Griffon or the crew was murdered by a group of Indians, who stole anything
of value and set the ship afire. Soon after the
Griffon disappeared, furs began to wash up on
the shores of Mackinac Island. It was thought
to be all that was left of the famous Griffon.
Ghostly Activity
Regardless of how the Griffon and her crew
perished, their ghosts continue to sail the
Great Lakes. There are reported sightings of
a phantom French brig style ship traveling
through the Straits of Mackinac. Many believe
this ship is LaSalle’s Griffon. Are the six crew
members and their ghost ship still trying to
reach their destination?
Some who report seeing the Griffon’s ghost
describe her as being on an eastbound course,
with no visible crew on her decks. As the ship
approaches, it slowly vanishes before the witnesses’ eyes. The best time to watch for the illfated Griffon ghost ship is early, on mornings
with heavy fog. The best place to watch for
the ship is the Island’s west coast, facing the
Mackinac Bridge. •

This past fall, Bayview Yacht Club dock neighbors and

elected to do a southern racing circuit together.
he races to be sailed included the legendary
Nassau Ocean Cup Race, the annual Wirth M. Munroe Fort Lauderdale to
Palm Beach Yacht Race, the Fort Lauderdale to Key West Race, Key West
Race Week, and the Suncoast Race Week. The five races have, in a way,
established a newer, custom version of the old SORC-type tour. Each race
has its own personality with totally different destinations and courses.
The first race, the Nassau Ocean Cup in early November, was across
the Florida Straits from Miami, around Great Isaac and Stirrup Cay, and
down to Nassau Harbor. The wind at the start was out of the northeast
at 12 knots, but it soon proved that a code zero was in order. Hot Ticket
started a little to leeward of Carinthia and after putting up her code zero
put about a + mile lead on Carinthia. When the two boats rounded Great
Isaac they turned about 20 degrees to the right. Carinthia went to a .75
oz. reaching spinnaker and managed to pass Hot Ticket within a couple
boat lengths and put on her own + mile lead. But, as long distance races
go, it was not over as the wind continued to clock. At dusk, and as the
breeze continued to back, Hot Ticket with her 0.6 oz. running spinnaker,
caught up and rolled Carinthia with a full blast of rock and roll music
that she is famous for. It turns out that Carinthia’s four year old spinnaker
was just too porous and didn’t have enough juice to keep up. In all, Hot
Ticket finished eight minutes ahead of Carinthia, but both boats finished
a very respectable 2nd and 3rd overall in the PHRF division. The conditions were great ... full moon, steady breeze, and temperatures in the 70s
allowing sailing in shorts the whole trip. The full moon was so bright that
it lit up the decks all night without the need for any flashlights … a truly
wonderful November night sail! The best part about this race was the
ability to hang out at the Atlantis resort on Paradise Island afterwards.
The two crews partied into the wee hours of each night and the competition did not end without a contest for the fastest crewman on the famous
Atlantis Temple waterslide.
The second race in the J120 series was the Wirth M. Munroe Fort
Lauderdale to Palm Beach Yacht Race, more commonly referred to

as the “Race to the
Buffet,” in early December. Unfortunately, Hot Ticket missed
the 9 a.m. opening
of the Fort Lauderdale 17th Street
Bridge to reach the Atlantic Ocean and was in jeopardy of
missing the start. After much discussion aboard, Ticket made the decision
to attempt to clear the bridge without waiting for the next opening. In what
ended up being a scary moment, she was able to just clear the bridge with
everyone sitting on the boom. The antenna on the top of the mast scraped
the bottom of the bridge and navigation lights on the spans. With all the distractions and delay, Carinthia was the first boat to the ocean side of the start
line at the gun with the J105 Loki a little behind and to her leeward. Hot
Ticket was noticeably late on the shore side of the line. Carinthia has done
this race a number of years with similar conditions of 15 to 20 knots out of
the north against the current. Carinthia would start with a #1 genoa close
hauled with the wind from the northeast. During the first 10 to 15 miles,
Hot Ticket managed to match speed with Carinthia, but Carinthia made
every opportunity to point as high as she could to sail into the Gulf Stream.
Loki soon fell back and Carinthia was the farthest right in the PHRF fleet.
Carinthia soon started getting lifted and continued to get farther right.
About 20 miles up the course, Carinthia was heavy in the Gulf Stream with
the miserable eight foot pounding waves over the bow that accompanied
it. On the conveyor, Carinthia got nearly a two knot kick that catapulted
them ahead of everyone in the PHRF fleet including Ticket. By the time
Carinthia reached the end of the 40 mile course the other J120 was nearly
four miles behind. At the end, Carinthia was headed but made the finish
line without tacking. The boats behind had to tack four times to stay off the
beach. Carinthia ended up 1st in class and 1st overall in the fleet. After the
finish, each boat and crew was met at the docks of the Sailfish Yacht Club
by lovely waitresses and served complimentary rum drinks. The evening
continued as it started, and finished with the “best buffet in Florida.”
The next race in the series was the 37th Annual Fort Lauderdale to Key
West Race in early January. The object of the race is to stay as close to shore
6 4 /// 2 0 1 2 S u m m e r B u r g e e
as possible along the Keys to stay out of the current of the Gulf Stream. The
race started out with conditions southeast at 20-25 knots, so both J120s
were flying their #3 genoas. Carinthia got a decent start at the boat while
pushing out nearly half the fleet. Hot Ticket was not far behind to leeward.
Unfortunately for Ticket, she lost her brand new #1 overboard during a sail
change about 30 minutes into the race and was forced to return to retrieve
it. As the day went on, so did the wind. By the time the two boats reached
the Miami Cut the breeze was under five knots and the two boats spent a
number of hours enjoying the night lights of Miami. Both Carinthia and
Hot Ticket at this point used the incoming tide to gain on the other boats in
the class by sailing towards shore. Eventually the wind clocked behind and
the rest of the race along the Key’s was a run in light breeze. Carinthia did
not finish the race by unfortunately cutting Sombrero Key Reef a little too
tight on a receding tide. Hot Ticket did finish a day and a half after the start,
which is extremely slow for this 160 mile race. She ended up finishing
against the extreme tidal current at Key West in about three knots of breeze
upwind. Again, both crews met up in Key West along with the incoming
sailors arriving for Key West Race Week. Key West has its own personality
with its deep history and the many bars/restaurants available to salvage the
aches and pains from the race.
Hot Ticket elected to do the Key West Race Week in mid-January in the
PHRF A class with a J-subclass scoring system. She raced in a class with
a number other J boats including J111s, J109s, and a J122. The class also
included a number of 1D35s. This was the first KWRW for Hot Ticket
and she sure earned her stripes. The class was very competitive and left
the crew with a number of lessons learned for future races. The highlight
of the week was the trek out to the course each morning amongst some
of the biggest, fastest boats and crews in the world, with the picturesque
dventure!
backdrop of the Key West. Each night was equally as enjoyable with the
sights and sounds of Duval Street …
The final regatta in the “Detroit J120 Southern Tour” was the 34th
Suncoast Race Week in Tampa Bay on Florida’s west coast. The first race
was on the last Friday of March and was a 25 mile point-to-point race
from Davis Island Yacht Club just outside of Tampa to Bradenton Yacht
Club on the southeast side of the bay. The race started with a seven knot
wind coming out of the southwest. We tacked all day upwind through
the bay to the Sunshine Skyway and then reached off towards Bradenton.
Hot Ticket led most of the way, battling it out with a couple Farr 395s
in the class, with Carinthia finishing 20 minutes behind. The second race
of the regatta on Saturday was from the previous day’s finish
in Bradenton back under the Sunshine Skyway and northeast to
St. Petersburg. The wind was out of the southwest at 20 knots
but since we were sailing the opposite direction we started with
our code zeros. Hot Ticket had a nice start and pulled in front of
Carinthia by about 100 yards. About 15 minutes into the race,
Hot Ticket’s spinnaker halyard blew and Carinthia managed to
pull ahead. There was a lot of wind pressure, as a Robinson 41, XS
tore off the front of her bow sprit. Eventually, we both switched to
our 0.6 oz runners down the course and then went to our #1 genoas
for the last 2.5 mile leg into St. Petersburg. A large ocean freighter
ended up splitting Hot Ticket and Carinthia apart just before the
Sunshine Skyway with Carinthia making it across her bow (barely
... and with a number of sounds) and Hot Ticket forced to wait for
the pass. Hot Ticket pulled out all the stops as the two approached
the finish, but in the end Carinthia finished 15 seconds ahead in front
of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. Ironically, the following day was a
windward leeward race with practically no air. The race committee
boat managed to get off one race in five knots of air with Hot Ticket managing to finish three minutes ahead of Carinthia. Hot Ticket’s finish on the
final day was enough to place them 3rd overall in the PHRF Spinnaker
division for the regatta. This race series was again unique as we got to
race between three different yacht clubs in the bay. We can’t tell you how
hospitable and appreciative the other sailors were that two offshore boats
from Detroit came to do their regatta. On our last night there, we were
invited by fellow local sailors to cruise the bay and have a few pops together.
Certainly, this was an excellent end to a great tour of the Florida waters.
The entire Southern Tour was a great way for two rival sailboats crews
to share a unique experience together. In addition, it was a great way to
bring fellow Bayview members along to share a mid-winter southern
adventure. The great part about racing together, as well as with our J120
class back home, is that we enjoy beating each other up on the water and
then sharing a drink together at the dock. As far as that goes, we won every
regatta we sailed. Now, it’s time to get back to the fresh waters of the Great
Lakes for more adventures in 2012.•

Charleston

his was the fourth time I have raced in Charleston race week, and it
for sure it will not be the last. For those who have not been, Charleston is a great place to visit, easy
accommodations, great food, awesome social atmosphere, and a close race course with great racing.
One of the virtues of the race week is the regatta village feel. The whole regatta is run out of the
Patriots Point Marina Resort. You put away your boat, walk up to the bar, see all of your fellow competitors, and then walk into the tent to enjoy the regatta sponsored libations. Then if you are lucky enough,
walk up to your hotel room to reset and get ready for the following day.
The racing is professionally run and if you are sailing on the inshore course the racecourse is about a
ten minute motor from the dock. Charleston Race week brings in big-time PRO’s to make sure the racing
is good and fair, which can be a challenge with all of the current of the harbor.

The Race organizers always do a current talk
before the race week to help newcomers come
to grips with the challenge of the harbor currents
and where not to sail to keep you off the bottom.
If you have the ability to go, I would strongly recommend it: the race week is run with the
same level of professionalism of Key West Race
Week, but without having to go to the farthest
south point in the USA. If Key West is where
you see all the professional teams, Charleston
is where you see all of the grass roots
racing teams.
This year we had 33 Melges 24s
and the racing was tight. Our major
competition was Alan Field on WTF
with Jonathan McKee calling tactics,
and Kristen Lane on Brickhouse with
Charlie McKee calling tactics. Troll
(Jeremy Wilmot) and I took a totally
new cast of crewmembers on the boat
for this regatta: Brad Funk, Meredith
Nordhem, and John Casey. The regatta
was tight and it turned into a match race
to decide the victor in the end. Troll did
a great job, and once again we came out
on top, winning our third major regatta
in a row leading up to the Worlds.

Women’s Event
Returns With
New Format
Another Year
WOWing
It Up
T
rying to satisfy a group of women can be,
well, let’s say, “challenging.” Organizing a sailing weekend
each year for women sailors can be even more so.
But NOT impossible, says Laurie Bunn, chair of the 2012
Women on Water Regatta.
“Changing the annual event keeps it fresh, exciting and
competitive,” she says. “We’re trying to reflect what our
female sailors want, and that’s a variety of formats.”
Beginner recreational sailors may want to get a taste of
racing. Veterans may want aggressive racing with tighter
competition. Women who don’t normally drive or trim on
mixed-gender crews may want to try out those positions in
less formalized competition.
7 0 /// 2 0 1 2 S u m m e r B u r g e e
So to appeal to all those kinds of female sailors, Bunn,
this year added a Friday evening point-to-point race and
is allowing men to crew to help form more teams, and
the fleet will finish in front of the club. “We expect the
usual dinner crowd but also a healthy spectator audience,”
she says.
Saturday will remain a windward-leeward, one-design
competition, that will provide the excitement more advanced
sailors crave, and beginners can learn to thrive on.
“Yep, something for everyone over the weekend, including
Sunday off,” Bunn says.
Bayview spoke with her about some particulars of the
event and what to expect that weekend.
“Changing the
annual event keeps
it fresh, exciting
and competitive ...”
BYC: What’s new about the
Women on Water event this year?
Laurie Bunn: We’ve re-vamped the format
to add a new kind of racing: a PHRF, pointto-point course that will start on the lake and
end on the river right in front of the club. So on
Friday evening, women will skipper a variety
of boats with a mixed crew. They can be allfemale (which is what I will do) or a mix, as long
as the woman steers. Assuming the weather
cooperates, we also expect some families with
children. On Saturday we will have our more
traditional competition for the WOW, the onedesign racing. And, it will only be Saturday, no
Sundays this year, so people will have time that
weekend for something besides sailing.
BYC: Why did you make the change?
LB: We wanted to make it a more inclusive
event, and based on the feedback from previous years, this is what women wanted, a bit
of fun racing, which will be the point-to-point
race, and some tighter competition in a singleday format. Plus, we’re trying to be mindful
of budget constraints too. And, we’re trying to
provide some great racing and competition, but
not tie up the whole weekend for everyone, as
they may have commitments to other sports,
or non-sailing spouses, or kids’ activities. Our
sport needs to be reflective of modern life.
BYC: What will the course be
for the point-to-point race?
LB: We’ll start somewhere near Windmill
Pointe or Peche Island, round a mark or two
on Lake St. Clair, and finish in front of the
club to hopefully a good crowd. With that
course, there’s no beating against the current in
the river.
participate in WOW racing or clinics who
have gone on to do adult sailing or more racing
in general.
BYC: What remains from previous
BYC: What does the WOW event
WOW regattas?
LB: Of course, the Natalie J. O’Niel Trophy
awaits the winners. That’s a tradition that will
NEVER change! We have the same healthy
competition among friends and well-organized
racing that will satisfy the long-time racers
as well as a good introduction for newcomers too. As always, the WOW sailors in 2012
will have a wide range of abilities and commitment levels. Some are serious racers, some are
weekend warriors, and some are new to the sport
entirely—which is great to see.
BYC: Why do women
need their own
sailing event?
LB: Women’s sailing builds
camaraderie in a unique way
which is good for the sport. For
women who don’t normally
sail together, it can help build
a team for the women-only
U.S. sailing national events, or
match racing. Some women don’t learn as well
with men on board, whether it’s a communication style difference, or an intimidation factor,
or whatever it may be, a women-only event can
help gain the confidence for other sailing situations. In general, women’s events are a great
way to grow the sport in ways that might not
happen otherwise. In the past we’ve had women
and women’s sailing events in
general offer to sponsors?
LB: Like all sailing events, the WOW draws
the usual demographic of people involved in
sailing. In general, they are passionate about
their hobbies, their sports, their fitness and
their fun. Plus, at a women’s event, spectators
come out in unprecedented numbers to watch
and help. Participants also tell us it’s one of
their most memorable events. That means years
later, when they pull out that T-shirt or hat
with the regatta logo, and see the
sponsor icon, they make a really
positive connection between the
two for years to come.
BYC: How can Bayview
members help make the
WOW a success?
LB: Volunteer! We always need
help with the race committee and
race management. If you’re a boat
owner, recruit some women to
sail your boat. You can even go along on the
Friday night race. If you’re a sailor, register
to race! And finally, everyone can help spread
the word about the new event format that will
be attractive to a lot of sailors in the area, new
and veteran.•

First Mackinac Race Winner
Bernida
Restored to Sail Again
by Al Declercq
I
t all started when Ted Everingham approached me at the
Mackinac awards party in the summer of 2005 and introduced me to Bart
Huthwaite. Bart was heading up a group, along with Roman Barnwell, that was
restoring Bernida. Bart found the boat in a barn in Frankfort in pretty bad shape.
Through their fundraising efforts, they were able to pay for the materials and
Roman volunteered his time to rebuild the boat. Roman did a beautiful job and
I suspect the boat looks better today than when she won the first Mackinac race.

“Bernida is an R Boat designed by George
Owens, an MIT professor, and built by
George Lawlet and Sons in 1921.”
Bernida is an R Boat designed by
George Owens, an MIT professor, and
built by George Lawlet and Sons in
1921. Bernida was designed to the Universal Rule developed in 1904. This is
the same rule that governs six, eight,
and twelve meters. The primary components of the Universal Rule are length
overall, waterline length, draft, beam,
and sail area. Not much has changed
over the years. The same factors that affected a boat’s speed potential in 1904
are the same constraints navel architects
optimize to today. Bernida won the first
Mackinac race in 1925, skipped the
following race, and won again in 1927.
The Mackinac Island
group had hoped that they
would be able to use the
boat locally to attract visitors to the island and draw
attention to other restoration projects. When that
did not work out, Roman
attempted to sell the boat
without any luck. Eventually, the decision was
made to auction Bernida
on eBay. This did not set
well with me. I believed the boat should
stay in the area and I was concerned that
someone from one of the active fleets
in Seattle, Cleveland or Toronto would
purchase the boat. So after a few beers at
Dead Mans Curve, I gave Roman a call
and told him I would buy the boat if he
pulled it off eBay. We agreed to a price,
as Jerome handed me my next beer, and
the quest to win a third Mackinac race
for Bernida began.
There were a few structural issues that
needed to be addressed, and I figured
who better than Roman Barnwell to fix
the problems before we picked Bernida
up in St.Ignace last fall. Roman bolted
a few planks that had been
secured by wood screws and
spruced up the top sides and
bright work. The boat was
delivered to Bayview shortly before Christmas by Gary
Snider. Dean Kuhn quickly
shrink wrapped the boat and
Todd Jones picked up the
mast for updates. The mast
lived indoors at Thomas
Hardware all winter. Thanks
Todd!
It is amazing how many Bayview
members have offered to help get
Bernida to the starting line for the 2012
Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race.
It is the kind of project we like to get behind at Bayview. Thanks to everyone for
your encouragement. For you naysayers,
we will make it to the finish line, and I
will be dammed if we will be the first
crew to lose a Mackinac race in the boat.
In preparing Bernida for the race, our
first concern was with the rig. It was a
single spreader rig and the panel length
between the supporting shrouds was too
long to provide adequate support. Andy
Groh redesigned the rig and added a

previous 46 Bayview Mackinac races I have sailed in. The

Detroit Cup Qualifier Stage 1
by Josh Kerst
May 12, 2012
Detroit River – Grade 5
8-12 knots:
6 flights and 12 races completed
Our 2012 match racing season started out in
need of a little WD-40 as we proved to be more
than a little rusty after several months off. CVT
was on his game as usual and Spencer showed
great promise under the watchful guidance
of Adam Hollerbach, who made a welcome
appearance after an extended layoff from U20
racing. We had several close and competitive
matches during the day with all the competitors that reinforced some helpful lessons. Hats
off to Dave Bennett for excellent U20 boat
preparation, as we never had any breakdowns,
and to our experienced umpires who made
sure everything worked smoothly.
Thanks again to Chris VanTol for putting
together yet another awesome event. Also
thank you to the PRO, Trish Smotherman, and
umpires, Debi Schoenherr, Com. Ted Everingham, Com. Bill Thorpe, Lance Smotherman,
and Hanson Bratton.•
