Inspired by African
adornment with an
added Western flavour
Colour is the key element of the Manitic
philosophy - Manitic colours capture the
energy of creation.
The A/W 13 season brings us warm
shades of raspberry and beetroot,
heightened with shades of olive and
caramel, while the idea of strong
contrasts inspires the palette for the
S/S14 womenswear collection. An
intense story of black and optical white,
enriched with shades of artificial blues,
mixing simple forms and geometrical
patterns with bold solid colours to create
a new elemental style.

Concept Jewellery will be exhibiting for

and subtle pieces are inspired by the

MACRO TRENDS
By Jocelyn Grant, Assistant Editor, What’s in Store at WGSN
W
GSN’s first macro trend,
N.D.A. New Digital
Aesthetic focuses on the
evolving impact of digital culture on
design. Enhanced brights of orange
peel, hot pink and cobalt contrast with
layered shades of denim, amethyst
and soft grey while artificial looking
luminous pastels such as limeade and
ice blue offer a fresh take on neutrals.
Sport is the main influence for
casualwear with relaxed shapes made
playful through bold and distorted
pattern and detail. Performance fabrics
and high shine finishes update classic
sports shapes like the raglan sleeve
sweatshirt. Print is key to this story
so look to spots, stripes and graphic
geometrics to playfully update the polo
shirt dress and printed tee.
“
Formalwear features powerful angular
tailoring in strong primary colours.
Gloss coatings and metallic finishes add
a futuristic feel to bodycon dresses and
arched hem miniskirts while contrast
panelling and splicing reinvent the
bodice and fitted pencil skirt.

Occasionwear has a playful fantastical
feel as sheer textures are layered
over pixelated and blurred prints and
embellishments. Pleating adds volume
to skirts while coated hems transform
one shouldered dresses and cross-strap
bustiers. Jacquards and tweeds balance
out the soft focus ethereal nature of
this look.
www.purelondon.com
wgsn trends
“
Our last macro trend, Neo-Geo
explores ideas of refinement and
reconstruction in a rugged unforgiving
environment. Earthy tones of
terracotta and henna are punctuated
by sharp red lava, yellow sunflower and
enamel blue.
Neo-Geo explores

“
Occasionwear takes inspiration from
1970s styling and North African
decoration for an elegant nomadic
look. Fluid voluminous shapes on
items such as the halterneck dress,
maxi kaftan dress and handkerchief
hem top are enhanced by traditional
mosaic prints, metallic jacquards and
shimmering beads and sequins.
Tailoring is pared back with a contrast
of loose and tapered proportions
offering a modern update. Sculptural
splicing brings an ultra-modern feel
to knee-length fitted dresses while
leather panels rework long-line blazers
and pencil skirts.
For casualwear, basics such as the
poncho, open-knit top and cargo
sweatpants are updated through
tactile contrasts and functional
elements. Weathered textures and
matt-shine contrasts on basics inspire
an outdoorsy luxe casual look.
next nature
Source: just cavalli
spring/summer 13
Our second macro trend, Next
Nature celebrates the lush organic
appeal of the wild, and how plant life
informs shape, surface and graphics.
Nature inspires a base palette of
kelp, seafoam, beetroot and plum
accented by rich raspberry and bright
watermelon.
Casualwear combines exotic floral
print, amplified colour and carefree
beach styling with street influenced
silhouettes. Casual shapes such as the
silky bomber jacket, printed skinny
jean, skater skirt and sweatshirt are
reworked in new cropped proportions
giving them a sexy urban feel.
Tailoring is inspired by 20th century
couture masters, combining organic
structures with botanical prints. Key
items such as the draped fit and flare
jacket, the caped back sheath dress
and the slim tapered trouser channel
classic elegance while maintaining a
sleek contemporary edge.
Occasionwear provides glamourous
party looks inspired by beach glamour
and 70s boho resort styling. 90s
influences are strong with cut outs
and sheer panels on short bodycon
jersey dresses while swimwear-inspired
detailing gives a sexy, body conscious
silhouette.

S/S 14 Buying Guide:
The Three Key
Trends to Know
Swat up on the key trends for Spring/Summer 14 before you head to stands
at Pure to help inform your buying for next season. Drapers dissects the
resort collections to pick the top three stories you need to know.
Blooming
marvellous
“
Forget ditzy floral repeats; Spring
14’s blooms are bold, big and bad.
Dramatic prints on dark backgrounds
or black flowers set against bold
colours give a hardened edge to a
traditionally pretty print.
Spring 14’s
blooms are bold,
big and bad
“
But it’s not all dark and moody;
plenty of designers have embraced
tropical blooms, using Brazil’s Rio
de Janeiro as inspiration together
with the country’s associated bright
colours.
Oversized florals in bright colours
are seen all over dresses, while
painterly prints are also worn from
top to toe.
But there are some softer options
on offer, too, this season, from the
likes of Stella McCartney and her
wallpaper-like designs.

Chanel’s daisy-on-blossom print

“
Which trends will you be looking to
buy into for spring 14 and why?
Sam: We have an aesthetic at Bottega
and tend to buy in that way rather
than backing specific trends. I don’t
really set out with a ‘shopping list’,
but I draw on my style references
and influences for inspiration. The
store is more than just fashion, it’s
about a lifestyle, so we compile mood
boards for all that this encompasses,
from fragrance, interiors, fashion and
accessories before we go into each
buying season. This gives us a cohesive
vision and helps to organise our
thought processes.
“
Janine: We are really focusing on
transitional styles due to the very
unpredictable weather in the UK with
little or no summer.
I always go
into each buying season

“
Lewis: I always go into each buying
season with an open mind, but I do
believe many spring 14 collections will
showcase lots of pretty pastel colours
and white will be the key neutral.

Lewis: Every season we look to add
new brands to remain fresh and
exciting for our customers.
Sam: We take on new brands if we feel
they will fit the brand portfolio or will
add a dimension to the business – and
if we get a good feeling about them. We
never have any preconceived ideas really,
if something excites me then I’ll buy it.
What advice would you give to

Short-form video
presents opportunities for fashion industry
By Suzanne Bearne
T
he next stage of social media for
fashion brands has gone beyond
the static picture.
The latest buzz in the industry is shortform video, with Vine and Instagram’s
video-sharing services becoming the
hottest social tools of the moment.
If you’re confusing your Vines with
your vines, here’s a quick update:
Vine is a social mobile platform which
allows users to create a six-second
video and then share it will their
followers on Twitter. These tiny little
clips captured the public’s attention
so much that Instagram launched a
direct competitor to Twitter’s Vine in
June in the form of a 15-second videosharing service, which can actually do
a bit more than Vine - think extensive
custom-designed filters - meaning
your video can appear a bit edgier.

It’s another platform
to showcase your brand
or store
“
So what does this mean for those
in the fashion industry? In short,
it’s another platform to showcase
your brand or store - whether that’s
presenting products or creating a
piece of storytelling. Take French
Connection, which has worked with
photographer and artist Meagan
Cignoli to produce a series of summerthemed stop motion spots across Vine.
Rachel Arthur, global senior editor
of media and marketing at WGSN,
applauds French Connection’s use
of the tools. “They demonstrate the
enormous level of creativity possible to
have within such a short time frame.”
French Connection
Footwear retailer Schuh views shortform video as another way to raise
brand awareness. Schuh social media
co-ordinator Jen Rankine says:
“We’re currently using it as another
way of presenting new products that
have landed. We’ll be experimenting
more with it as time goes on. You can
showcase product in a fancier way than
just taking a photo of it.”
“
A fantastic expression
of the fashion industry,
which has rich content
naturally embedded into it,
waiting to be captured
“
Arthur says these platforms present
a perfect opportunity for those in
the fashion industry to “get noticed”
on a burgeoning social tool. “It’s also
a fantastic expression of the fashion
industry, which has rich content
naturally embedded into it, waiting to
be captured.” She adds: “They’re also
platforms that afford experimentation
so it’s worth just getting stuck in.” You
heard it. Get filming.

the 60s and 70s, this colourful,

What led you to set up your
own company?
Founder Claire Maley explains, “After
graduating with 1st class BA Hons in
Fashion I worked as a junior designer
for a few months before deciding it
wasn’t for me. Then one afternoon
I saw The Prince’s Trust enterprise
scheme, attended the four day course
and began on my adventure with
them to set up my own business; CM”.
What inspires your designs?
I fell in love with digital print through
a project with the Royal Society of
Arts called DIGITEX, and ever since
digital print has been the nucleus of
my design efforts. CM began with an
