marathon
The far West Texas towns of Alpine, Fort Davis, Marathon and Marfa
play an integral role in the success of Viva Big Bend. If you’re from
out of town, we encourage you not only to discover new music at the
festival but to explore the local surroundings. The staff at Viva Big Bend
and Texas Music magazine would like to thank the local communities
for welcoming and supporting this new summer tradition!

Saturday, July 27 • 3:30–5:30 p.m.
Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines have been
offering celebrated songwriting workshops
for several years.
The Texas Music Office is a state-funded
office that offers several resources to
grow your band or business. Learn where
you can find information on copyrights,
trademarks, music publishing, booking
agents, recording studios, annual music
events and more, all available free of
charge. With more than 9,000 music
businesses and annual events in its
referral network, the Texas Music Office
is sure to have information to assist you in
commercializing your music.
In this two-part workshop, attendees will
first learn about the business: how to send
your music to press and radio contacts,
how to use social media, information on
copyrights and publishing, etc. In the
second part of the workshop, attendees will
learn tricks for opening
the mind and enhancing
creativity while learning
about song structure,
alternate tunings and
the like.
This event is free for those with a Viva Big
Bend wristband.

For craft activities, washable markers

Galeria Sibley • 103 W. Holland Ave., Alpine
Hours of operation: Friday and Saturday during Viva Big Bend: Noon–8 p.m.
See “More Viva Big Bend” (above) for artist appearances.
The art at Viva Big Bend isn’t limited to musical
performances — even by the performers themselves.
Several musicians playing the festival will showcase
their art at Galeria Sibley, 103 W. Holland Ave.
(Alpine). Visitors will enjoy the unique perspective
each artist offers. From the eclectic chainsaw art
of Doug Moreland to Matt Skinner’s landscape
paintings, the musicians demonstrate an artistic
sensibility that transcends — though may be
informed by — their music. Check “More Viva Big
Bend” (above) for artist appearances.

The Holland Hotel in Alpine will again serve as a hub of activity during Viva Big
Bend, including hosting the main box office for the festival starting Wednesday, July
24. Live music will be featured in the courtyard on Thursday, Friday and Saturday
afternoons. The performances are open to the public, the hotel bar is sure to be
hopping and the musicians will be rocking the patio of the historic venue.
102 N.W. 1st St., Hwy 90 W., Marathon
Friday, July 26 • 12:30–7 p.m.
Sophisticated and historic, the Gage, built in 1920,
captures the rich heritage of the cattle industry. Few
hotels offer a more distinctive experience of days
gone by.
A host of activities are planned for the
kids this year. Children’s author Wendy
Parnell will lead participants in a fun,
interactive reading of her books on
Texas music: Super Louella, inspired
by the music of Marcia Ball, and Musta
Notta Gotta Lotta Sleep Last Night, a
Joe Ely-inspired book named for one of
Ely’s song titles.
RSVP Required.
Email Texas@grammy.com or call 512.328.7997.

Photographer Jessica Lutz will
feature musicians of West Texas
and the land that inspired them.
ArtWalk Alpine will be creating their muralin-a-weekend project during Viva Big Bend!
Join them in the lot adjacent to PrintCo (5th
and Holland Avenue in Alpine) to watch
celebrated muralist Stylle Read and a host
of volunteers create our homage to Mexican
painter Jesus Helguera (based on his “Poco
a Poquito” calendar artwork).
