BALTIMORE SUN EDUCATION REPORTER ERICA GREEN TO SPEAK AT
8TH GRADE CLOSING
We are happy to announce that Ms. Erica Green, education reporter for the Baltimore Sun, will speak at
the 8th grade closing. She will share her personal and professional narratives, reflections on the future of
our City and State, and strategies our girls and boys can use to be successful in high school, college and
beyond. Ms. Green is a graduate of Goucher College and Northwestern University. Quoted in an
interview she gave to Goucher Quarterly, Ms. Green said, “education [reporting] is not just about
education: It encompasses every aspect of society. It’s crime, it’s politics, it’s legal proceedings, it’s health.
You never get bored. And it’s so important. When I was a kid, education literally saved my life. Not as in,
“If I hadn’t gone to school, I wouldn’t have this great career.” I mean that, without the teachers who truly
cared about me, I would probably be dead; I grew up in a very abusive household. School was my outlet.
School was where I felt safe.” We look forward to her insight and remarks at the 8th grade closing.

8TH GRADE CLOSING CEREMONY
To mark the end of this part of their educational career, 8th grade students will enjoy a variety of activities. On June 14, 15, and 16, students will
practice for the closing program. On rehearsal days, 8th grade students must be present for the full day and in uniform. The 8th Grade Closing
ceremony will take place Friday, June 17, 2016 at 8:30 am sharp. Students must wear semi-formal dress for the closing program. They should not
wear jeans, shorts, t-shirts or tennis shoes. Girls should wear dresses or skirts and blouses. Boys should wear nice dress pants and shoes with a
button down shirt or polo. Ties are a wonderful compliment to the boys’ outfits.
Guests will enter the auditorium through the main doors beginning at 7:45 am. The doors will be closed at 8:30 am, and you will then enter
through the doors by the garden. Each family will receive 4 tickets for this very special event, and the ticket must be presented at the door. If you
would like extra tickets, please contact Ms. Paulina in the office, and she will put your name on the waiting list. Tickets will be given to your child
by Monday, June 13, 2016. We ask that small children and babies be left at home. If you must bring a small child or baby, he/she must have a
ticket to enter. If a child becomes disruptive, we ask that you leave with the child and return when he/she is calm. We appreciate your
understanding. Also, during the presentation of awards, we ask that you take pictures from your seat to avoid blocking other audience members
from seeing their child on stage. One final note, if during the ceremony you need to use the bathroom, you will exit through the back door and
walk around to the main entrance. After the closing program, students and their families are invited to mingle and take pictures at a courtyard
reception with lemonade and cookies. The 8th grade students will receive their report card and be dismissed.
7TH AND 8TH GRADE DINNER/DANCE CRUISE
The 7th and 8th grade team would like to invite your 7th or 8th grade student to attend the 2nd Annual Dinner/Dance Cruise to celebrate the end of a
wonderful school year. This year, the dance will be held aboard Spirit Cruises in Baltimore. Dinner will be provided on the cruise, as will
refreshments, music and room for dancing and celebration. This is a semi-formal affair, so students will be expected to dress appropriately for the
occasion. They should come dressed to impress! Gentlemen should wear nice dress pants and shoes with a button down shirt or polo. Ties are a
wonderful compliment to their outfits. Ladies should wear nice dresses or skirts. Dresses should be school appropriate with 1-inch shoulder straps
or a cover-up jacket over the dress - absolutely no jeans or tennis shoes. Permission slips and money are due by June 10th. Students in the 7th
grade can give the money and permission forms to Mr. White, and students in the 8th grade can give the items to their homeroom teacher.

PREK FAMILY PICNIC AT
PATTERSON PARK
KINDERGARTEN PICNIC AND GAME
DAY IN THE PARK
PreK parents and their families are invited to the Annual HHA PreK
Picnic from 11-12:20 am Wednesday, June 15th in Patterson Park just
west of the school in an open field area. A sign-up sheet will be sent
home with items to bring. There will be food to share and games.
Families are encouraged to come, play and hang out!
Kindergarten parents and their families are invited to the Annual
HHA Kindergarten Picnic and Game Day from 9:30-11:30 am
Tuesday, June 14th in the “small park” at the northeast corner of
Linwood and Eastern Ave. There will be food and organized games.
Remember to dress comfortably. Families are encouraged to come,
play and hang out!
PREK CLOSING ACTIVITIES
Parents and family members of prekindergarten students are invited
to attend a special closing activity in your child’s classroom at 9 am
Monday, June 20th. There will be a program presented by the
children that includes songs, an awards ceremony and a special
present from teachers. Children are encouraged to dress up and

AWARDS ASSEMBLIES FOR GRADES 1-7 AND REPORT CARDS
On Tuesday, June 21st, students will stay with their homeroom class to attend the awards assembly for their grade. Parents are invited to join us.
Awards include attendance certificates, effort, conduct recognition and other academic accolades. Report cards will be distributed at the
conclusion of the awards assemblies. If a parent is unable to pick up the report card, or the child will not attend the last day for any reason, the
parent may pick up the report card from the teacher’s mailbox beginning Wednesday, June 22, 2016. Report cards cannot be given to students
who owe money for lost or missing textbooks or library books. If you need to pay for a book, please see either Mrs. Hogan (for textbooks) or
Mrs. Kannam (for library books). Please turn to page 12 for a complete list of assembly times per grade level.
EXCITING NEW HIRES
Personal career decisions, out of state relocations, marriage, and retirement
created a number of openings at Hampstead Hill Academy for the 2016-2017
school year. After posting positions a few months ago, outstanding educators
from across the region and the country have expressed their desire to work at
HHA. We had more than 200 inquiries for approximately 6 teacher openings.
After a season of interviewing, observing sample lessons, and checking
references, we have filled all but one opening for next year. You will learn
more about our new faculty members in the fall, but let’s just say we are very
excited about the training, experience and positive energy they will to bring to
Hampstead Hill Academy.

SCIENCE FAIR WINNERS
BLAST VS HHA STAFF
5th
Congratulations to
grade students James Gardner, Alex Taylor,
Eva Lesko and Shamal King for working diligently on their science fair
projects and coming in 1st place at the John Hopkins Community
Science Fair! James and Alex created an underwater robot that was
capable of moving forwards and backwards in hopes of one day
designing a robot to help clean up the Chesapeake Bay. Eva and
Shamal explored all the seen and unseen colors that make up
common candies using chromatography strips. Great job
representing HHA!

The Leaders Go Places Executive Committee is excited to announce
the 3rd Annual Baltimore Blast vs. Hampstead Hill Academy
Volleyball-Soccer Game scheduled for Tuesday, June 14th at 3 pm in
the gym. The 2015 WORLD CHAMPION Baltimore Blast, our premier
men’s professional arena soccer team, will challenge HHA staff to a
game of volleyball where staff can use their hands, but the Blast can
only use their feet. Admission to the event is $5 for students, adults
and staff. Proceeds will benefit the Leaders Go Places program.

CAREER FAIR
Thank you to everyone who made the 8th Annual HHA Career Fair a success. Representatives
from various businesses spoke about their careers to students in grades 5-8. The guests

Students explore careers at the Career Fair
FIELD DAY FOR HHA STUDENTS AT UTZ FIELD IN
PATTERSON PARK
On Tuesday, June 14th, as a part of field day, students in grades 1-8 will take part in physical activities at Utz
Field in Patterson Park. Classes will go to the park according to a pre-determined schedule. Please have
your child wear tennis shoes on this day. Each group will be at the park for approximately one hour.
Students will receive bottled water and a healthy snack after taking part in this event. We would like to
acknowledge the staff at the Living Classrooms facility for making this event possible.

NEWS FROM THE TEAMS
PREK
Students have been learning about habitats. They have been studying the plants and animals that live in forests, ponds, oceans and deserts. In
June, students will begin to study fairy tales, and in math, they will continue to learn about addition and subtraction and practice these skills
through the end of the year. Please have your child practice these skills with you at home! As the school year comes to an end, please make sure
you check the calendar daily. There are many important events coming up that we hope you can attend. Also, remember to put your child to bed
at an early and regular time. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher.
PreK students celebrate Mother's Day, paint a picture of a pond habitat and take part in the
last Audubon session of the school year.
KINDERGARTEN
Students had a great time celebrating Fairytale Day. They enjoyed planting their own beanstalk, creating a candy cottage and playing Fairytale
jeopardy. There are still many activities taking place so PLEASE be sure to check your child’s agenda folder on a daily basis for important
information about these activities. The end of the year picnic at Patterson Park will take place Tuesday, June 14th at 9:30 am. Families, including
siblings, are invited to attend. Parent volunteers are also needed for this event. Lastly, the kindergarten closing ceremony will be held Monday,
June 20th at 10:30 am. Please look for more detailed information about all these events in your child's green agenda folder.
GRADE 1
Students have mastered reading, spelling and numbers to 100. They also learned about the human body, astronomy, fairy tales, folk tales and
animals. Students are looking forward to the field trips to The National Zoo in Washington DC and the Urban Pirates ship in Fells Point. The
teachers have enjoyed spending time with your child, and hope that you have a restful, relaxing and rejuvenating summer. Remember to spend
time reading with your child.
GRADE 2
Students have been learning spelling, reading and paragraph writing. They have studied fractions,
money, graphing and numbers to 1,000 in math. The students are now looking forward to the field
trip to the Natural History Museum in Washington DC and the Urban Pirates ship. The teachers
have enjoyed spending time with your child, and hope that you have a great summer. Remember to
spend time reading with your child.
GRADE 3
Students look forward to two upcoming field trips: June 1st to Patterson Park with Audubon,
and June 15th to the Urban Pirates ship in Fells Point. As a reminder, the 3rd grade closing ceremony
is Tuesday, June 21st from 11:15 am to 12 pm.
2nd grade students enjoy nature at
the last Audubon session of the
school year.
Reading: Students will finish Reading Mastery III this month. The final stories will address the
senses of the human body such as sight and hearing. Other students will conclude the school year with the novel The Wonderful Wizard of
Oz. During the summer, read with your child every day, even on the weekends, to keep their reading skills sharp over the summer.

Language: Some students have moved into the letter writing unit of the language program. During this unit, students will learn how to write a
letter that clearly conveys a sequence of events as well as learning about outlines, affixes and how to use a table of contents. Other students have
moved into the reporting unit of the language program. During this unit, students will learn how to write narrative reports that contain a main idea
and supporting details as well as learning about the different reference sections of a textbook, fact vs. opinion and guide words. Several other
students are learning how to draw a logical conclusion when presented with evidence, the difference between a general and a specific statement
and how to correct/clarify an inaccurate or general statement. This year, all classes have made incredible strides in language and have greatly
improved their writing abilities.
Math: Students are finishing the year with units on money, time and fractions. This summer, please practice multiplication and division facts with
your child. Your child will be very successful going into 4th grade with these facts memorized.
Social Studies: All students have recently completed the local government unit. They will now expand their knowledge of how citizens are
governed by focusing on the state and federal government. In addition, they will continue to explore their rights and responsibilities as world and
community citizens. Thank you for all of the support you've provided your child at home, especially helping your child to build his/her study skills.
GRADE 4
What a year it has been! From field trips to projects, the 4th grade students have been
keeping busy! The 4th grade teachers will miss all the students next year, but they know
that each child is prepared for what 5th grade has to offer.
Reading: Some students are in the last unit in the 4th grade book Living in History, and
are reading The Prince and the Pauper. Other students are in the 2nd textbook of the 5th
grade program, and are currently reading the last story Tom Sawyer. Students should
read nightly in their textbooks. Grade reports are being sent home on Fridays. The
report should be looked over, signed by a parent or guardian and returned on the next
school day. Weekly homework sheets are being sent home on Monday and are due on
Fridays.
Language: Some students are working hard to finish the RWD Reasoning and Writing
Program before the end of the year while other students are continuing to write in
detail as they prepare for their first test in Reasoning and Writing E. Several others are
learning how to write about misleading or inaccurate claims in advertisements and are
certainly thinking like creative writers.
4th grade students Asher Ziolkowski and
Natalie Lasker at the annual Frog Hop! Their
frog Kermit came in 4th place.
Math: Some students finished the geometry unit and have started to learn about area
and perimeter. They will create graph-paper robots to learn how to calculate area and
perimeter, and will finish the year learning about bar graphs, line plots and the volume
of solids. Other students have finished the geometry unit with a fun symmetry project by making their own version of a Hawaiian quilt. They will
now learn about bar graphs, line plots and volume while several others have finished learning how to change fractions to decimals and all about
tenths, hundredths and thousandths. They used their knowledge of money to make decimals come alive. They will now finish the year with
geometry, area and perimeter.
Science: Students are finishing the unit on exploration, and will take the unit test on June 2nd. Students will then finish the year learning about
how the colonies began. Encourage your child to continue to explore his/her curiosities this summer. Education.com is a great website for athome projects. In addition, feel free to check out studyjams.com or pbskids.com for excellent Social Studies/Science resources. Also, the local
library has excellent Social Studies/Science books for kids.
GRADE 5
Reading: Some students completed Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain while others have completed Orson Welles' War of the Worlds. All groups have
been preparing for the trip to Biztown on June 7th. Students will work in a business, earn a paycheck, open a bank account, shop and eat lunch at
the cafe.
Language: Students are working hard to firm up all of their skills before going to 6th grade. Encourage your child to read as much as possible over
the summer to keep their brains sharp.
Math: Students have been working on portfolio projects and getting ready for the end of the school year. They are also working on geometry and
measuring angles, and reviewing material in order to prepare for the 6th grade.
Social Studies: Students are learning about U.S. citizenship responsibilities and privileges, and what their civic duty is to our country.

GRADE 6
Humanities: Students are finishing the school year with a unit on Shakespeare's classic tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. Students are also compiling
their portfolios and completing end-of-year reflections on their learning and progress this year.
Math: Students are finishing the unit on geometry, and have been keeping their skills sharp with portfolio projects and quizzes. As the school year
comes to an end, it's important for the students to remain focused and prepare for the 7th grade.
Science: Students have learned so much in science this year. In a few weeks, they should all be Earth Science Masters, with exceptional knowledge
under the topics of: exploring the Earth, geologic changes, weather and climate, water, global warming and the universe. The 6th grade teachers
are proud of their accomplishments and look forward to them showing off all they've learned next year.
GRADE 7
Language Arts: Students are reading and analyzing Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth. They are looking at the themes of free will and fate, and how
the events in the play support both ideas. Students recently debated whether Lady Macbeth or Macbeth was more responsible for the crimes
committed and who would be a better leader as a result of it. In addition to the study of Macbeth, students are continuing to learn vocabulary and
grammar.
Math: Students have completed all of the grade level CCSS skills, and will transition to 8th Grade CCSS skills.
Science: Students will complete a mini-unit on earth's biomes and ecosystems. They will develop a deeper understanding of how abiotic and biotic
factors interact with one another to maintain equilibrium.
BREAKING NEWS: Congratulations to all of the students in 703 who completed their Capstone projects! After an in-school
competition, one team went on to compete at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and won a trip out on the Chesapeake Bay with the
Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Well done Nissrin Gehawi, Damen Wilson, Francisco Mendez, Ashley Uroza, and Yessica Martinez!
GRADE 8
Language Arts: Students have finished Of Mice and Men and were very successful on the test. They did a mini unit on the Bill or Rights and were
able to identify and explain each amendment. They will begin their last novel The Giver and will use Socratic Seminars and small group discussions
to help us understand the story. The next few weeks will be busy with all the 8th grade activities so please make sure your child is present and on
time each day.
Math: Students have been working very hard in the end of May to prepare for the PARCC assessment. In June, students will mostly be working
with probability. They will be able to determine probability of desired events both with and without replacement. For example, students will be
able to determine the chances of rolling a 5 and then rolling a 6 from a standard die. In addition, students will be able to display probability as
percentages.
Science: Students have been learning the foundations of chemistry, and have explored physical and chemical changes with labs involving AlkaSeltzer rockets and Kool-Aid solutions. They are now researching the history of atomic discovery, and will end the year with an introduction to the
periodic table as well as a final portfolio project - Elemental Poetry. Students will write haikus, a form of Japanese poetry, about an element of
their choice.
Please continue to send in money for the end-of-year trips. Students will travel to Washington, DC on June 1st; Six Flags on June 15th; and the
Dinner Dance Cruise on June 20th at 6 pm. We look forward to seeing families at the 8th grade closing on Friday, June 17th at 8:20 am.
Leaders Go Places
As we approach the final few weeks of the year, there are A LOT of exciting events happening with LGP. Students who have earned Platinum twice
this year, along with a few lucky raffle winners chosen from a pool of one-time Platinum leaders, are traveling to New York City June 8th and 9th for
an urban adventure that includes Central Park tours, visits to historic landmarks, a Broadway show and tons of delicious food. Our Quarter 4
Recognition Ceremony will take place Friday, June 10th at 8:15 am. We hope to see many families in attendance. Following the ceremony, Bronze,
Silver, Gold and Platinum leaders will head out to Sandy Point State Park for a fun-filled day at the beach.
Looking ahead to next year, the LGP Committee is working to compile quotes from students, staff, families and alumni about the impact LGP has

RESOURCE NEWS
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
MUSIC LESSONS
All students are learning recreational sports to play during the
summer months. Encourage your child to go outside and play at the
appropriate time of day.
To close out the year, band and orchestra students will focus on
rhythm and note reading in the form of rhythmic exercises and
learning short songs. Students will also have the opportunity to learn
about instruments they may want to play next year. They will be
able to hear students’ perspective on being in band and orchestra as
well as see and hear each instrument.
CORE KNOWLEDGE EXTENSION
Pre-K and K students are singing songs such as The Grandfather
Song, Stomping Land, Time to Sing and Walk to School. Students in
grades 1 and 2 are learning about the Maya, Aztec and Inca
civilizations, and students in grades 3 and 4 are learning about the
ancient Roman civilizations. Students in grades 6 and 8 are writing a
variety of different poems and stories. Students in the 7th grade will
continue with the Duo-lingo program.
FOOD FOR LIFE
PreK and K students have been making fresh carrot juice and fresh
orange juice, creating edible art and exploring the garden. Students
in grades 1 and 2 are completing their unit on MyPlate and have
made hummus, veggie stir fry and more. Students in grades 3 and
4 are doing a unit on vegetables and have been planting and tasting
a variety of veggies. Students in grades 7 and 8 continue to learn
about foods from around the world and are having a cook-off
competition to show what they learned this year. Wishing everyone
a happy, healthy summer!
ART
Students had another successful year in the art room with the many
talented artists at HHA! If your child is entering grades 5-8 and
would like to participate in HHA's Summer Ceramics Camp have your
child see Mrs. Butcher in the art room for a permission slip. There
are still a few spots available in the camp. Encourage your child to
practice drawing over the summer.
HHA staff, students and parents went to the
Hippodrome to see Beauty and the Beast! The
show was fantastic and everyone had a
wonderful time.
HEALTH
Students continue to wow and impress these last few weeks in
health class! PreK - 2 students continue to explore the 5 food
groups by writing and illustrating their own book and designing and
organizing their own healthy MyPlate. Students in grades 3 and 4
have finished the tobacco unit by creating anti-smoking
advertisements, and students in grades 5-8 have completed the
Family Life and Human Sexuality Unit by working on a study guide
and completing a final exam.
DRAMA
Students in grades 3-4 are finishing plays based on non-fiction books
they selected, and students in grades 5-6 are turning in costume,
light, set, and sound designs and performing scenes from the oneact comedy, This Is a Test. Students in grades 7-8 are turning in
costume, light, set and sound designs and performing scenes from
the classic drama, Inherit the Wind.
Pre-K and K families will receive invitations shortly to an Open
Drama class rehearsal of Where the Wild Things Are. The open
classes will be held from 2-2:40 pm on the following dates:

NATURE EXPLORATION
In Nature Exploration, students are finally getting outside again! The upper middle school
students have been testing their boat building skills by floating their water conveyances in
the boat lake. There were some very successful boats. Students in grades 5 and 6 have been
learning about population dynamics and have generated data while playing a game called
"Oh Deer!" which they are currently graphing and analyzing. Students in grades 3 and 4 have
just finished the unit on animal adaptations and their final projects will be on display in the
main hallway shortly. Our youngest students are learning about pollinators. They have
simulated pollination of flowers, have investigated where pollen and nectar are found on real
flowers, have learned how bees communicate by dancing and are currently learning about
bee anatomy! They are certainly busy bees! The year will end with lessons about our precious
natural resources and discover some simple ways that we can help to preserve them.

ESOL
The ESOL team would like to thank all families for their support and involvement throughout the school year. Continue to read with your child this
summer. It's important for your child to keep up with their reading and speaking skills. WIDA results from the assessment taken in January will be
distributed to students. Students were assessed in reading, writing, listening and speaking. If you have any questions about your students' results,
please contact your ESOL teacher. ESOL teachers will also be at Family Academic Night to answer any questions.
PreK students have been learning about different habitats like oceans, deserts, ponds and forests and will begin to learn about fairy tales and their
characters and settings. Kindergarten students are learning about animals and their habitats as well. Students in 1st grade finished learning about
the butterfly life cycle and set the new butterfly friends free! Students loved watching them grow and have become butterfly experts. Students in
3rd grade will investigate the changes of seasons, and students in grades 4 and 5 are identifying the importance of iconic symbols of the United
States of America. Students in the 7th grade are determining which personal traits they have in common with their other family members.
Newcomers are identifying the different sights found in a common city.

ENRICHMENT
Many parents ask if their child meets the criteria to be part of the enrichment program. To qualify for gifted pull-out programming during 2016-17,
students must demonstrate specific aptitude on two or more nationally normed measures. Among the data used for consideration are: the
Measure of Academic Progress (MAP- given in fall and spring to all students 1-8), the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT2), The Gifted Evaluation
Scale (GES-III), and the iReady Adaptive K-12 Assessments. Parents may also choose to submit the results of outside testing done by a qualified
professional and/or test scores on another nationally normed test received at another school. Generally, if students have high achievement scores
or receive strong parent AND teacher recommendations, they will receive additional screening. All students in grades K-1 are automatically
screened, using the Naglieri Nonverbal Achievement Test. Please review the chart below for additional information regarding testing. Please email

DANCE COMMITTEE
Thank you to all students and families involved in making the FOUR middle school dances a success this year! The committee looks forward to next

TENNIS
HHA middle school students and alumni helpers enjoy the last dance of the school year,
"A Night in the Hollywood Lights”
The HHA tennis team, pictured to the right, had a terrific season despite all
the rain. The players have learned USTA rules of play and worked very hard
to learn forehand, backhand and overhead shots. Every player has shown
much progress. Mrs. Riorda and Ms. Thomas have had a blast coaching this
group of students. Congratulations on an awesome season!

BUILDERS CLUB
SENIOR PROM AT LIVING CLASSROOMS
The members of the Builders Club have been busy this month. Club
members went to Target to spend the money raised for the
University of Maryland Medical Center. Games, toys and electronics
were purchased for the children to use while in the hospital.
Members will visit the hospital in June to deliver the items.
Good-bye and best wishes to 8th grade students Eva Kaminaris,
Emily Perez-Rodriquez and Ana Vasylyshyn who will leave to begin
high school. If you are interested in joining the Builders Club next
year, please see a current member or Mrs. Marybeth Smith.
On Monday April 25th, 35 students, who are part of the Living
Classrooms’ afterschool program, hosted 75 senior citizens for an
intergenerational dance. There was dancing, food and kids getting
out of their comfort zones. The staff at Living Classrooms is so proud
to work with HHA students because they are kind and willing to try
new things. HHA students raised over $200 to pay for decorations,
desserts and supplies. Special thanks to Max Sullivan and Luis Banos
for helping with this endeavor. In addition, thank you to the many
families who brought a potluck dish for the event. The dance was
held in partnership with the Department of Recreation and Parks’
Senior Citizens Division.

AWARD NIGHT FOR LEGO ROBOTICS
On May 5th, Mr. Meade along with two 3rd grade students Illiana Benitez-Cruz and Julissa AscencioMartinez and Illiana’s mom, Ms. Cruz, pictured to the right, attended the Armed Forces Communications
& Electronics Association Awards Night at Martin's Crosswinds in Greenbelt, Maryland. HHA was
recognized for receiving a grant for $1,100 to purchase Lego Robotics kits to be used in the school. At
the event, high school seniors from across Maryland received over $50,000 in STEM college
scholarships.

No double parking at drop-off and pickup. This creates a dangerous situation and you could get a $252 ticket.
No crossing in the middle of the street. Cross your child at the corner. Do not encourage your child to get to school by
crossing in the middle of the street! This can be extremely dangerous for your child.
Please remind your child that ball playing is not allowed in front of the school or on the blacktop during school arrival and
dismissal times. Also, to be careful when moving about outside of the school when there are small children in the area.

HEALTHY TIPS FROM THE WELLNESS COMMITTEE
HHA’s Wellness Committee would like to congratulate everyone on another great school year!! Before going out to celebrate and enjoy summer
activities, please take a moment to review these very important summer safety tips.
In the water…children should always be supervised when they are around water. Accidents can happen quickly - even to experienced swimmers.
Lifejackets are essential when children are boating or near deep water.
In the sun…remember to apply sunscreen before going outside and reapply regularly.
Most doctors recommend using sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher.
Outdoors…protect yourself and children from biting insects such as mosquitos and
ticks which can cause serious diseases. Use an insect repellent containing DEET and
reapply as directed on the package. Biting insects are worst in the evening. Wear long
sleeved shirts and pants for the best protection.
On the playground…remember that playground equipment can get hot in the sun.
Touch gently before getting on to avoid burns.
While biking…all children and adults should wear helmets while biking, skating, scooting or skateboarding. Enjoy yourself and stay safe by riding on
paths and away from traffic.
