Welcome to Trieste - Welcome Office Friuli Venezia Giulia
Welcome to
Trieste
INTRODUCTION
The Aim of the Guide
This guide aims to be an easy tool for
those who arrive in Trieste and do not
know how to get oriented in the city.
When a foreigner comes to an unknown
place, he has some essential needs: to
find a place to eat and sleep; to know
how to use public transportation, where
to find a doctor; to obtain the “permesso di soggiorno” (residence permit); to know the red tape in order to be able to
study/work. We are not claiming that this guide is exhaustive,
but just that it lends a hand so as to make the
first period in Trieste easier for new comers.
As students from several different countries, we
know from our own experience how precious it
is to receive some useful information to feel part
of a new reality. We have chosen to translate this
guide into English, French, Serbian, Classical
Arabic, Albanian, Romanian, Chinese (Mandarin), Russian and
Turkish to help immigrants overcome the language barrier.
By writing this guide, we also wish to keep alive the hope that
the reality of each ethnic group in Trieste will be better known
by the others, that each one’s language will become the language
of the others, making the dream of a local writer come true:
Dialogherò con il tuo vento
della strada fin qui percorsa
delle parole adagiate
nelle doline
cresciute agli sguardi
fieri della mia fanciulla
per incontrarti a Tomaj.
Quel giorno, Srečko,
dentro un momento di Bora,
la tua lingua diventerà
anche la mia.
Coexistence among people is established through actions. Our
work may seen unimportant, but it is practical.
Authors
Some volunteers of the “Mondo 2000” Association
and some students of the United World College of
the Adriatic have been able to write this guidebook thanks to many people who have been
working with immigrants in Trieste for a long time,
or who are immigrants themselves.
We would like to thank all those who dedicated their time and
energies for this guidebook. In particular the members of the
Management Committee who helped us in gathering all the
necessary information and in particular Eva Sicurella of CARITAS,
Lorenzo Dugulin and Sofia Quintero of CACIT, Eliana Camacho of
Solidarietà Trieste, Osama Khalaila, Gianfranco Schiavone of
1.
G. DEPANGHER, Con l’altra parte di me, Forlì, 1987, p. 11.
ICS, Denis Lena of the Centro Servizi per Cittadini Immigrati
Extracomunitari, Claudio Caramia of the WCRP, Alessandro
Colautti of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region – Permanent Service
for Immigrants and Ahmed Elmi Faghi of the Italian-Somali
Cultural Association SAGAL.
We would also like to thank all the representatives of the associations, organisations, communities and agencies who offered
their time for the interviews carried out by the students of the
United World College.
Bibliographical note:
The information used to write this guide was obtained through
interviews with representatives of associations, agencies, and
communities or from both digital and paper-based sources,
supplied by the associations themselves.
Since this guide refers to a reality which is constantly changing,
we apologise in advance for any inaccuracies.
Where are you?
Welcome to Trieste!!
You have come to Trieste for different reasons: to work,
to study, to meet your loved ones… You have decided to stay for
a while, or to move here to start a new period in your life.
You are in North-Eastern Italy, on the border with Austria
and Slovenia. Coming here, you immediately noticed the sea
(the Adriatic), companion of the city,
and the highlands (the Carso) which
embrace it. In winter, you will become
acquainted with the Bora, the cold
wind which blows from the North-East.
In the summer, the sea and the coastline will strike you with their beauty.
The main square of the city, looking
towards the sea, becomes in a way the
symbol of Trieste: open and enclosed at the same time.
The origins of Trieste go back to pre-Roman times. The historical
heart of the city revolves around the summit of the Colle di San
Giusto (San Giusto’s hill), towered over by the Castle and the
Cathedral. Trieste became a modern city with the rise of the
Hapsburg Empire, at that time the hub of commerce and
culture. The city has traditionally been a meeting point for many
different people, coming from both far and near. In the city, in
fact, you can see buildings from different periods and churches
belonging to various creeds, as an indication of peaceful – most
of the times at least- coexistence.
After the troubled post Second World War period, Trieste has
today become the capital of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
It hosts a university and an internationally renowned science
centre.
It is linked via land and sea with Eastern and Western Europe.
Its airport, located less than an hour from the city centre, is
easily reached.
Walking around the town, you might meet people who speak
your language. Nowadays, about 11.000 legal foreigners
reside here and their number is still growing. At times, Trieste
seems to turn its back on its Middle-European past, and to
turn rather towards the future as a city of science, technology
and culture.

authenticated findings from the first Christian
community of Trieste).
The modifications and the gradual development of the buildings
on the hill of San Giusto show the vital role of the local Church
in the V century, i.e. when the Christian cathedral was built on the ruins of a temple
dedicated to Jupiter, Era and Minerva. The
Paleochristian building, left few traces, as
it was replaced by two parallel churches in
the Middle Ages; these were then merged
into the current Basilica with five naves.

church dedicated to St. Spiridione, was later given to Serbian
Orthodox prayers. The current church of San Nicolò and of Santissima
Trinità was built in 1784 on Rive because at that time Trieste was a
