Autumn has always been a favorite season of mine. Crisp days, chillier nights.
Breaking out packed-away sweaters and scarves. A bevy of seasonal pastimes to
return to, like pumpkin-picking and driving around, looking at the leaves.
Autumn is pretty great.
It’s easy to get so distracted by our own lives that we don’t even notice the world
around us. But we live in a world where beauty surrounds us. What more proof
do we need that God has created us for joy than the profligate splendor of these
autumn days?
One of my favorite young authors, Rainbow Rowell, who wrote the wonderful
novel Fangirl, captures this spirit of autumnal joy thusly:
“October, baptize me with leaves!
Swaddle me in corduroy and nurse me with split pea soup.
October, tuck tiny candy bars in my pockets
and carve my smile into a thousand pumpkins.
O autumn! O teakettle! O grace!”
What a hymn to the season! I pray for all of us, as we enter these days of
Autumn, that like falling leaves we will release ourselves into God’s good future
with joy and abandon, in faith that whatever awaits us, it will be good and right
and yes, beautiful.
With Autumn blessings,
Rev. Kristen

Call to the 2nd Semi-Annual Budget Meeting
The 2nd Semi-Annual Budget Meeting of the Prospect Congregational
Church, UCC will be held Sunday, October 25, 2015 in the Sanctuary,
20 minutes following worship or 11:30 a.m., whichever is later. The
purpose of this meeting is to approve the budget for 2015-2016.
A Note from the New Music Director
I would like to express my thanks to the congregation of Prospect
Congregational for their warm welcome. I am very excited about
ministering through music. I would like to encourage those of you
who especially love music to come sing with the choir. You do not
have to read music, just love to praise God with song. We are
meeting every Wednesday evening at 7:30 for rehearsal and we would
certainly welcome you.
If you play an instrument, please let me know. Many of our anthems
have instrumental solos in them or perhaps we can use you in a
group. A church with a strong music program is a happy church. I see
we have some lovely children in the church and I would love to start
a children's choir. The main thing is to find a time when we can
gather them all together for a practice time. There is often a
conflict with today's busy schedules. I will be seeking more
information about this from you in the future.
A little about me, I was born and raised in Albany, Georgia, but I
have lived in Connecticut most of my adult life. After raising my
family, I was privileged to have the opportunity to go to Hartt
School of Music. I majored in organ performance/music education and
earned my BM degree at Hartt and later my MS degree and sixth year
degree from Central Connecticut State University. I am retired from
teaching general music in Meriden's public schools. I have been
involved in church music all my life and I have played the organ and
directed choirs in Connecticut churches since the mid-eighties.
