DISTRICT TRANSPORTATION FOR UPCOMING DATES
Despite Easter being very early this year, many school districts chose to take the week before Easter off. In large
part, this is due to NY State Common Core testing at the middle and elementary school level that takes place in
early-mid April. Therefore, please be aware that many of the public school districts will be closed March 21-23 and
will not provide bussing. A list of those districts follow:

SHA IS PROUD TO PRESENT…
SHA presents The Greek Mythology Olympiaganza, a unique visit to the major Greek myths. See the feminist version
of Pandora's box, Jason and the Argonauts vs. the Zombies, the dance version of the Trojan War, and much, much
more! Join us as we laugh at the stories we thought we knew. Shows are Friday, March 18, and Saturday, March
19 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are available for $9 adults at the door/$8 adults presale; $7 students and seniors at the
door/$6 students and seniors presale. Hope to see you there!
UNYTS BLOOD DRIVE
The Donate Life Club is hosting the annual UNYTS Blood Drive at SHA on Monday, March 21, 7:30 am - 1:30 pm.

THE BIG SHA RAFFLE
We hope that Raffle ticket sales are going well! The tickets are due on April 13. Remember, many of the student
incentives are for girls who sell MORE THAN the original 10 tickets issued. Students who would like more tickets can

DEADLINE APPROACHING - TRANSPORTATION APPLICATIONS FOR 16-17
Please note that district transportation applications for the 2016-2017 school year are available in the Main Office.
These forms must be filled out and returned to your local school district office listed on the application by April 1,
2016 – we do NOT accept these forms in the Main Office. A new application must be completed every year. City
of Buffalo residents do not need to complete a Metro Pass application.
SHARK CLUB & REFUGEE SERVICES
The SHARK Club is supporting Maya Westcott '17 and other area students who are furnishing an apartment for
Journey's End Refugee Services. If you would like to help, please send in any of the small items on the Home Again

RE-REGISTRATION FOR 2016-2017

Parents of Freshwomen, Sophomores, and Juniors
What:
One-day walk in re-registration
When: Wednesday, March 16, 2016 from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm
Where: Student Dining Hall
On Wednesday, March 16, 2016, SHA will hold its annual re-registration. Doors will open at 7:00 am and staff
members will be in place until 7:00 pm to accept the paperwork necessary to secure your daughter’s place in her
class for the next academic year. We promise to have lots of help on hand to get you in and out quickly.
On March 9 your daughter will carry home a packet containing the forms that need to be completed for formal
registration. Then at least one parent of each student must come to Sacred Heart on the 16th to deliver the
package of completed forms along with the tuition deposit of $500.00. This way, if any information is incomplete or
signatures are missing, we can secure them on the spot and avoid disturbing you with follow-up mailings and phone
calls. We are confident that you will appreciate the ease of this method of re-registration.
If you foresee that you will not be available on March 16, please contact Mrs. Guzdek in the Main Office
(716-834-2101 ext. 301 or kguzdek@sacredheartacademy.org) to arrange a time to drop off your packet of forms
before the 16th. Please note that a late fee of $100.00 will be charged for registrations received after the formal
registration day. Your daughter will be working with her counselor to select her courses for 2016-2017. Please note
that we can process her course selections only if she is formally registered to attend SHA in 2016-2017.
FINANCIAL AID FOR 2016-2017
FAST, the company that provides our financial aid application analyses, is now open to receive financial aid
applications for returning students. To be considered for aid for 2016-2017, an application must be submitted
electronically by April 15, 2016. If you have a daughter entering 9th grade in September 2016 and have already
filed for financial aid for her, you do not need to apply again. The school will use the information from your
December 2015 application. To apply…

Review the filing instructions under the heading “FAST Filing Instructions for Returning Families.”

Select the “Financial Aid Application” link located in the left column. This link will take you to the FAST
(Financial Aid for School Tuition) Website where you will file your application.
HOST A GERMAN STUDENT
The Buffalo-Dortmund Sister City Committee, dedicated to the cultural understanding between the two cities, is
seeking host families from Sacred Heart for three or four German high school students from late August, 2016
through early December, 2016. Students are well-screened, outgoing, and speak English fluently. Each student has
health and liability insurance along with letters of recommendation, photos etc. In addition, they have a supportive
program provided by the committee. Sacred Heart has been a part of this exchange for the past several years, and
all the SHA families who have hosted girls have really enjoyed the experience.

ATTN: SOPHOMORE & JUNIOR PARENTS
Attention Sophomores and Juniors: please see the flyer on Page 8 for the Buffalo National College Fair. This is a
great opportunity to visit with admissions representatives and attend workshops on topics related to the college
admissions process. All juniors will be attending the fair on Wednesday morning, 9 am-11am. Parents can take
advantage of the fair that evening from 6 pm-8:30 pm. The list of schools attending is available online at

AMHERST GIRLS SOFTBALL LEAGUE
Registrations are currently being accepted for the Amherst Girls Softball League. This league is the largest all girls
softball program in Western New York. Girls will learn to promote self-esteem, goal setting, experience teamwork,
learn diversity, and most importantly have fun. Please see Pages 9 -11 for all the details. Batter up!

daughter will not be in school the last week before break. Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation.
As a reminder, if your daughter will be out due to an appointment, we will need a note back from the provider
verifying the appointment. This is noted on Page 20 of the Student Handbook.
GENIUS OLYMPIAD REGIONAL SCIENCE & ENGINEERING FAIR
Terra Science and Education, the founder and organizer of the International GENIUS Olympiad, in partnership with
The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University at Buffalo present the first annual Genius Regional
Science and Engineering Fair to Buffalo NY on April 30, 2016.
The competition is a one day event bringing together science projects developed by Middle and High school
students in the greater Buffalo area to approach environmental problems in the following categories: Environmental
Quality, Ecology and Biodiversity, Resources and Energy, Human Ecology and Invention. Prizes will be awarded.
Application deadline is April 25, 2016.

SUMMER WRITING WORKSOPS
Please see Pages 14 and 15 for details on the Summer Writing Workshops hosted by the Western New York Writing
Project at Canisius Collge taking place July 11-22, 2016.
Attn: JUNIOR PARENTS
ACT 3/15/16 for ALL JUNIORS
Next Tuesday, March 15, all Juniors will be taking the ACT in school. We are asking that all Juniors arrive to school by
8:00 am in order to be checked into their testing room. The girls will be assigned to different classrooms
alphabetically, with about 10-15 per classroom. The test is roughly 4 hours long with 2 scheduled breaks in between
certain sections. Following the test, the girls will be dismissed and provided a pizza lunch in SHA Hall. The last two
periods of the day we will provide fun activities for the girls.
All of the girls have already registered with their counselor in school. Please remind them to get a good night’s
sleep and have a healthy breakfast! The girls have also been given permission to not wear their uniform on 3/15.
The dress regulations for a non-uniform day are listed below as noted in the Student Handbook: “Students must be
dressed appropriately for school. No strapless tops, tops with spaghetti strap or see-through blouses may be worn.
Tank tops must have straps 2” wide. No bare midriffs or excessive cleavage are to be shown. No low-slung pants,
pants with writing across the backside or pajamas may be worn. Shorts are not permitted, except during June
exams. No slippers or footwear deemed unsafe. Other guidelines may be announced as needed by the
Coordinator of Discipline.”
On the Test Day:
• Bring photo identification (SHA photo id)
• Sharpened soft lead No. 2 pencils and a good eraser (No mechanical pencils or ink pens)
• A watch to pace yourself. Your test coordinator will announce when 5 minutes remain on each test.
• A permitted calculator - examinees may bring any 4-function, scientific, or graphing calculator as long as it is
a permitted calculator modified if needed as described above. (DO NOT bring calculators with build-it or
downloaded computer algebra system functionality.
• Snacks to eat during break - all snacks and drinks must be kept outside the testing room. We are asking that all
girls keep their book bags and cellphones in their lockers during the test.

Sophomore Retreat
Dear Sophomores and Parents:
On Tuesday, March 15, the Sophomores will have the opportunity to attend their Sophomore class retreat. The
retreat team has been busy planning a great day for the girls. I hope this will be a fun, meaningful, spiritual
experience for the young women and I look forward to spending the day with them. Attendance on this retreat is
required. (If illness occurs, you must bring in a doctor’s note to excuse your absence.) A pizza lunch will be
provided. Students should eat breakfast before the retreat.

Attention Parents: ALL students will be bussed to and from the retreat. Students will attend homeroom before they
leave for the retreat and will arrive back to school in plenty of time to catch their bus or ride at the end of the
school day. Students should wear their SHA shirts from Walkathon and may wear casual bottoms – appropriate and
comfortable for their day! Please note that Villa Maria can be a bit chilly in the morning, so you may wish to dress in

In the Teen Writing Workshop, the focus is on
creative writing. A workshop for motivated
writers, students spend time each day with
writing groups. There, they share their writing
and grow from the guidance of their peers and
mentor teachers.
Participants benefit from a number of other
activities, including visits from local authors,
open mic sessions each week, a field trip, and
creating an anthology to publish their work.
The teen camp will conclude with a final open
mic on the last day.

“This Program Is Such a Gift”

The Workshops are an opportunity for students to
develop and expand their writing skills, focusing on
creative writing.
Our writers come from all over the Western New York
area--from Buffalo to Lewiston to Dunkirk--and . as
Kelsey put it, “We have fencers and actors and athletes
and artists here...Even though it is our similarities that
bring us together, it is our diversity that instills life in
this program.”
Cost: $225 per student ($250 if you register
after July 1, 2016)
Each year, the Young Writers’ Camp is
organized around a theme. In 2016, the
summer’s theme is space and exploration. Like
the Teen Writing Workshop, the focus of the
camp is to develop its participants’ creative
writing skills.
During the two weeks of camp, campers will
work together both in small groups and
individually to develop interesting and
thoughtful pieces of writing. They will write
poetry, mini-dramas, stories, songs, and more. In
addition, the Young Writers will take a field trip
and will make a video, which will be shown at
the final reception!
A limited number of partial ($100) need-based
scholarships are available. To apply, include a
letter explaining your need by June 10, 2016.
