I would like to take this opportunity to thank the students, families and staff of Park Ridge SHS for their unfaltering support this year. Our school has been focused on raising attendance rates, ensuring a strong approach to literacy development and a commitment to our community values of learning, integrity and teamwork. We have done this believing that aiming high and investing in “Excellence in All We Do!” ensures we all meet our full potential. The Academic Awards Night was a wonderful way to celebrate the achievements of our students and their commitment to “Excellence in All We Do!” Every student is to be congratulated for their effort and hard work and we recognise the outstanding achievement of our Senior Dux, Amber Wedge and our Junior Dux, Thanh Nguyen. The night was filled with exceptional student talent from the Stage Band, to the amazing vocal work of student David Ilalio-Tonata and our Dance Troupe in “New York, New York”, to the compelling visual art work displayed on the walls of the Student Activity Centre. I was also impressed with the quality of our ‘School in Review’ media presentation depicting the diversity and vibrancy of our learning community. The Year 12 Graduation was a sentimental celebration of the individual contributions of our Year 12 students to the life of our school during their time with us. Inspirational speeches demonstrated how much these young people have touched our lives and how much we will miss them. I would again like to thank the staff for their hard work and the support of families in making these two important occasions so memorable. Preliminary indicators would suggest that all Year 12 students are exiting with a Queensland Certificate of Education. Congratulations to the students and the tireless energy of the Senior Support Team. As the year comes to an end it is important that we keep the focus on learning and supporting our Junior Secondary Students as they complete their final assessments. In keeping with our investment in high expectations for our community, I would ask that we think about the uniform for next year. Shoes must be all black or all white leather or vinyl (no embellishments or logo’s), ankle white socks must be worn and our full school uniform. Natural hair colour is essential and piercings cannot be worn at school. We have a full uniform outline on our school website and in our school organisers. I appreciate the honouring of this enrolment requirement and appreciate your support for our uniform school. Being in class, on time, with all of the tools for learning is essential to meet learning goals, as is participating in every lesson bell to bell. I have been proud of the achievements of our community this year and look forward to capitalising on those achievements next year. I hope that everyone has a very happy and safe Christmas break. ‘The only thing in our control is effort, that’s all and that’s everything’ Mark Corburn. This night included a host of special guests from local members of parliament to staff. It was an awesome turn out by many teachers, students; family and friends and the 2015 Sports Captains Sarah Shuttlewood and Nic Stiffel were MC’s for the evening. While the evening was about celebrating student success in sports, there were many highlights throughout the night including the outstanding video’s by Ms Del Prado, showing the involvement in this year’s fun and exciting sporting events. Every year there are nominees for the junior male and female sports man and woman of the year, and senior male and female sports men and women of the year. The winners in the junior category were; Mitchell Fitzpatrick and Zoe Edwards and the senior awards were Camryn Newton-Smith and Jonah Martin. Congratulations to them and all other award winners on the night. We also had the privilege of welcoming Leigh Harding, currently working for the Brisbane Lions, as a special guest who was interviewed by Craig McBrien. Entertainment was provided by our talented Remix group. They had worked very hard to present us with an entertaining piece. Well done! Thank you also to all Year Coordinators for presenting the many awards on the night. A major thank you to Michael Purtle and Mark Biggs for making sure that the night ran smoothly; the night would not have been possible without your contribution to the school. Well done to everyone involved and we look forward to sport at Park Ridge in 2016! 5 Tuesday 9 and 10, November. The Music night was the perfect opportunity for the students to display many of the perfected pieces that they have been focusing on this year. The arts department would also like to thank the tireless efforts of the Instrumental Music Support Committee. Special Guest Leigh Harding with Craig McBrien; MC’s NickStiffel and Sarah Shuttlewood; Senior Sportsman of the Year nominees Jonah Martin, Alex Sauer and Aidan Duncan. Sia Leifi & Jordan Bonney – 2016 Sports Captains The Arts Park Ridge State High School Arts faculty focus on extending learning through opportunities which foster a school culture in which creativity and excellence are celebrated. Park Ridge State High School Arts faculty has been very busy lately with a Film Television and New Media presentation night that showcased some of the productions that the students have been working on. The graduating class is full of talented students in this area and their creativity and skill were on show on Friday night, 6 November. We were happy to showcase the talent that we have at Park Ridge State High School and appreciate the fabulous support “The Arts” receives from the wider community. Rob Emblem – HOD The Arts Year 7 Geography Excursion Over the past two weeks, all of the Year 7 students have undertaken their first field study for Geography. In our unit that focuses on liveability of an area. They have completed a primary data survey of the nearby Boronia bushland and surrounding Park Ridge area. Despite the humid days, students took it all in their stride, as they walked the designated path in order to assess the various locations on the map. The first stop was the Park’ n Ride, where students assessed the area for its accessibility, aesthetics and serviceability to the community. They also stopped to listen to the area’s noise levels, noting that while the highway had some sound barriers, it did little to block or limit noise, particularly as it was a major thoroughfare for trucks. The Instrumental Music program has had much success this year and it has culminated recently with the Instrumental Music Awards evening which ran over two nights on Monday and 6 The next stop involved a collection of observational data about how well the area serviced its local residents. They determined that there were a lot of services that catered for a wide range of different residents and age groups. Some things noted were a childcare centre, a primary and secondary school, dance studio, shopping centre with all necessary services – including postal, news, health and groceries, an aged care facility, and even a nearby Chinese restaurant. From there, students walked to the nearby Boronia bushland, where they noted huge differences in housing lot sizes and street facades. Some homes had pretty gardens and were well looked after, while others needed some maintenance to keep up street appeal. As they walked these local streets, they also noted that the residents were well-provided for by the local council, with rubbish removal, stable electricity supply and a local free newspaper delivery. Once they got to the nearby bushland, there were notable differences to the green space and how the council had continued to provide for their local residents. Some things students noted were well-maintained pathways, aesthetic features such as small bridges across dry river beds, and brightly coloured parks, which had BBQ, toilet, drinking and picnic facilities. While there were a lot of facilities, students did manage to point out various instances where graffiti was found on residential fencing, the bridge, and even on informational maps. Along the way, students had to take note of the difference in temperature and noise, environmental aspects, such as flora and fauna, and record their observations in their field study booklet. In addition to finding the collection of this primary data useful for their assessment, students found their excursion to be informative and educational, as well as relaxing (despite the heat). Now they must analyse this primary data, collect secondary data, via online research and then complete a reflective paragraph about possible improvements to the area, in order to complete their final assessment piece for the year. These students have done a fantastic job working with Griffith University to involve the school community in following science events and activities – • A bridge building competition held to celebrate National Science Week. This event attracted a large number of student teams keen to build the strongest bridge. • Organised students to participate in the Griffith University Annual Trivia Challenge. Our students participated strongly. • Held regular lunch-time science challenges. • Conducted Science club meetings. Well done team! Ross Bradford – HOD Science It’s Maths Moments Like These… “It’s Maths Moments Like These…,” presenting simple, real world maths opportunities for you to support your child in improving their numeracy. Christmas is upon us. A time for families to come together, exchange gifts and eat too much ham. Christmas also provides many opportunities to further our children’s numeracy skills. Junior Secondary School Students Planning the big family Christmas lunch is an ideal opportunity for your child to learn how to budget, shop for best value and to multiply with fractions and increase quantities. For example: that secret family recipe for the perfect Christmas Pudding, which requires 750g of mixed dry fruit and 1/3 cup of brandy, will only serve 8. Guide your child through the process of doubling the quantities of all the ingredients for the extended family members. Senior Secondary School Students Mrs Munro – Year 7 Ignite Teacher Science News Congratulations to Year 12 student Josh Lai for gaining direct entry into a Bachelor degree in Occupational Therapy at Griffith University. Josh successfully completed the Griffith Biology program. Griffith Biology is a two-year part-time university course which builds on the Biology course PRSHS students study at school. This course incorporates learning activities and experiences (e.g. tutorials and lectures) which value add to the units that the students are studying at school. It also enables students to experience an integrated university course whilst completing their senior studies. STEM Ambassadors This is a group of aspiring science leaders selected to engage their peers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). The ambassadors are – Taylor Meerwald, Breanna Wilken, Theresa Torrent, Kirra Klane and Chloe Lai. Secret Santa presents are always a fun way to give gifts to large families. Getting value for money is an important skill these days. Seeing how far one can stretch a $20 or $40 gift limit is almost an art form. Help make smart decision and to justify their gift choices. We often find that students are unable to intelligently communicate the reasons for their decisions and recommendations based on their mathematical results. Ian Clapham – Maths Teacher Business class ‘Heart Kids QLD’ Fundraiser This semester in Year 10 Business class, we were given the opportunity to raise money for a charity of our choice. This year, we decided to raise money for Heart Kids QLD, a charity that I am personally touched by. Heart Kids QLD is a charity that supports families with children who have a congenital heart disease. We raised approximately $800 as a whole. My enterprise class ran a ‘Guess the Hearts in the Jar’ competition. The other enterprises ran a raffle with three different prizes. The project was a fun and active opportunity for students to get to know one another and work together to 7 achieve one main goal - to raise money for Heart Kids QLD. I just want to thank everyone who helped out by buying raffles or guessing a number of hearts. It is a big help for Heart Kids QLD. Breanna Wilken - Year 10 Student Playful Rascals Another fun and exciting year of playgroup has sadly come to an end. Thank you so much to families that join us every week and our dedicated students that work so hard to make learning fun. Playful Rascals will recommence on Friday 12 February from 9:15-11:30am. We hope you all have a happy and safe holiday, and can’t wait to see you all again next year! Ami-Lee Tully – Early Childhood Teacher Community News 8
