Photo Credit: Guido Dingemans “What is the good life? Since the dawn of history, this enquiry has motivated the making of art as well as philosophy. But the many answers to it…were never as radically shrunk as they were in the 19th century, when the good life became confused with the desires and achievements of a tiny minority.” (excerpt from the Introduction to The Other Hundred) - Pankaj Mishra Internationally Acclaimed Author & Winner of 2014 Windham-Campbell Prize Photo Credit: Florian Mueller The Other Hundred is a worldwide initiative to present a counterpoint to global media consensus about some of today’s most important issues. It provides a better understanding of the people who make up our world and the lives they lead. Through an annual series of 100 photostories, The Other Hundred moves beyond stereotypes to challenge conventional wisdom and introduce readers to the vast majority of people, ideas, places and cultures overlooked by most major media. Photo Credit: Anthony Kurtz The Other Hundred annual photo-books’ images and stories are gathered through an open call to photographers around the world challenging them to explore the given theme from a new, fresh perspective. The inaugural edition was based on the reality that the vast majority of people on the planet are not financially wealthy, yet many lead rich lives and have discovered success in different ways. As a counterpoint to the Forbes 100, Bloomberg billionaires and countless other rich lists, The Other Hundred celebrates ordinary people and the myriad of ways in which to measure success. The second edition of The Other Hundred is a celebration of everyday Entrepreneurs those who have never written a formal business plan, hired an investment bank, planned an exit strategy or dreamt of a stock market flotation. The Other Hundred Entrepreneurs features the efforts of people who for reasons of necessity, belief, ambition or desire to serve others take risks and start their own ventures. It provides rich new perspectives on entrepreneurship. Photo Credit: Leo Kwok The Other Hundred Educators questions the conventional understanding of education and presents the un-celebrated educators of our times. These are the people who have pioneered unique ways of teaching and transferring knowledge and changed the lives of many. Their methods are unorthodox and their pedagogy rarely recognised. Their contribution to pushing the boundaries of human knowledge is often times more profound than those found at formal institutions. Yet they will never feature atop education ranks and lists. The educators we are looking for come from widely varying walks of life such as the Madrasah teachers of Tul Banat, Pakistan who teach girls history, Arabic and the Qur’an or educators from The Edible Schoolyard project in the United States who teach health and nutrition by converting gardens and kitchens into interactive classrooms. At its heart, our message is that the world of education is far more diverse and a lot more interesting than what gets portrayed on nightly news or on the cover of business magazines. The most valuable educators have a lot more to offer than entry to elite schools. The third edition of The Other Hundred will be a collection of 100 educators you may have never heard of but need to know about.
