With its vast array of deserts, grasslands and wetlands, Botswana encompasses the rich diversity and intense beauty of the African landscape. Deep within the Kalahari Basin lies the jewel of the desert – the Okavango Delta. Brimming with wildlife, the Okavango Delta is the largest inland delta in the world and is home to some of the most diverse ecosystems on the continent. Partake in the numerous activities the Delta has to offer like bird watching, game viewing, mokoro activities, quad biking and indulge in spectacular photography. In addition to the Delta and desert areas, there are grasslands and savannas, where Blue Wildebeest, antelopes, and other mammals and birds are found. Northern Botswana has one of the few remaining populations of the endangered African Wild Dog. From the Okavango Delta, to the Chobe National Park, Moremi Game Reserve and the Linyanti Swamps, experience the abundance of fauna and flora Botswana has to offer. Travel inland across the vast expanse of the Makgadikgadi Saltpans, to the largest game reserve in Southern Africa, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. The Kalahari is home to a large diversity of animals and landscapes. Due to its Did you know Present-day Botswana (former Bechuanaland) was a protectorate under the United Kingdom from 1886 to 1966, when it became an independent nation within the Commonwealth. In the subsequent decades, inspired by Great Britain and the United States of America, Botswana became a democratic society, making it Africa’s best democracy. Since the 1970’s, it is home to one of the world’s most peaceful societies. No other place in the Third World has had a democratic system comparable to Botswana. Contrary to most nations in the world, this African nation has not had coups d’ etat, guerrillas, warlords, military dictatorships, and Marxist revolutions. Botswana is the world’s third-biggest diamond producer following Russia & Canada. Perched on the banks of the now flowing Savute Channel, the Belmond Savute Elephant Lodge offers a spectacular birds eye view of elephant in their natural habitat. The Savute Channel, one of the greatest mysteries and fascinations of Northern Botswana, is flowing again after nearly 30 years of lying dormant. Prides up to 40 strong are not uncommon, as are sighting of all the other major predators; the endangered wild dog, leopard, cheetah and the hyena. Savute is also renowned for its excellent birding during the summer months (December through March), as well as being home to some very rare rock paintings drawn by the early San Bushmen, who once inhabited the region. Remarkably well preserved, the falls and its surrounding areas have been declared national parks and a World Heritage Site. As the country with the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Southern Africa, Zimbabwe’s hundreds of San rock paintings and ancient ruins from the Iron Age satisfy the most avid history connoisseurs. Blessed with fertile soil, mineral wealth and breath-taking scenery, Zimbabwe has two major rivers which form its Northern and Southern borders. The Great Zambesi River cuts across the North and the Limpopo River forms the Southern border. Did you know Zimbabwe has a magic that has puzzled people for centuries, many of them famous, like David Livingstone the explorer, they felt compelled to come back again and again, each time the love becoming deeper than before. Great Zimbabwe Ruins is one of sub-Saharan Africa’s most important and largest stone ruins. Designated a World Heritage Site in 1986, the large towers and structures were built out of millions of stones balanced perfectly on top of one another without the aid of mortar. Zimbabwe was formerly known as Southern Rhodesia, Rhodesia and Zimbabwe Rhodesia. The present name, Zimbabwe was derived from the 11th century city, The Great Zimbabwe and “Dzimba dza mabwe”, which means “great houses of stone” in the Shona language. Boasting one of the greatest wildlife populations in the world, some species are truly unique, many are rare, and a few whose lineage goes back long before the first ancestors of mankind evolved. In the Etosha National Park, huge herds of springbok, gemsbok, zebra, and blue wildebeest, as well as smaller numbers of red hartebeest, Bruchell’s zebra, lion, cheetah and the elusive leopard gather at waterholes and are spotted easily against the stark white background of immense salt pans. The Central Plateau which is home to the highest point in Namibia, runs from North to South and is bordered by the Skeleton Coast to the Northwest, the Namib Desert and its coastal plains to the Southwest, the Orange River to the South, and the Kalahari Desert to the East. The Kalahari, while popularly known as a desert, has a variety of localised environments, including some luxuriant and technically non-desert areas. One of these, known as the Succulent Karoo, is home to over 5,000 species of plants, nearly half of them endemic. Did you know The country, known as the “Gem of Africa”, is a unique place for eco-tourists. Much of Namibia is as it was centuries ago. Due to this, it has a host of natural wonders and amazing places. From one of the world’s biggest deserts and national parks to tropical forests and savannahs with one of Africa’s highest concentration of wild animals, including lions, zebras, elephants, rhinoceros, hyenas, and marine mammals. The Namib Desert, at 80 million years, is the world’s oldest desert. Namib means “open space”. Namibia is the second least densely populated country on earth, after Mongolia which is also a vast country, there are just over two million people living in a country which is half the size of Alaska.
