RAAF A94-984 Crashed 28nm west of Ubon AFB Afollowing engine failure; 1 ejected USAF – 41AD 48-0065 Crashed due to engine failure shortly after take-off from Takhli AFB; 6 survived; An account from Gary Craig, who was the Navigator, with my thanks:“We took off from Takhli, AB Thailand about 0500 to perform post-strike refuelling for fighters from Udorn who were bombing in the "Plain of Jars" in Laos. We were not scheduled to fly that morning, but were awakened when both the primary and backup aircraft experienced engine fires and aborted their mission. We climbed to about 8,000 feet and experienced several mechanical problems including multiple engine fires. The fire retardant did not extinguish the fires and we bailed out at approximately 086 Radial/ 32 nm from Takhli. The aircraft continued on autopilot and unfortunately crashed into a small village NW of Takhli, killing all of the residents (17) of the village with the exception of the Chief who had just left, but witnessed the crash. I was taken prisoner by a group of primitive villagers wearing loin cloths and living in grass huts. They had spears and blow guns. I was greatly outnumbered, so I tried to befriend them by giving them gifts of everything I had on me. It seemed to work. In a couple of hours, a rescue helicopter dropped down and I took off running, dove into the open door and off we went. I didn't look back to see if they were throwing spears at me. I then directed the chopper to pick up the five other crew members who were dispersed in the jungle. Everyone was okay and when 8 Date Type Operator Serial Location & Details 56-2908 we landed, we celebrated hardily. An inspection of all the KB-50J aircraft at the base revealed that the planes had been sabotaged by cutting the fuel lines. Security had been very lax up to then. Recognizing that the KB-50J was too old and too slow to refuel the current jet fighters, the aircraft and the Squadron were decommissioned.” Crashed in Thailand following engine failure; 1 survived 02Jan65 F-100D Super Sabre USAF – 474TFW 22Feb65 F-86L Sabre & F-86L Sabre Thai AF 02Mar65 F-105D Thunderchief USAF – 18TFW 62-4235 Damaged by AA over Vietnam and abandoned near Roi Et; 1 ejected 05Mar65 Grumman Albatross Thai Navy 1264 24Apr65 C-130A Hercules USAF – 6315OG 57-0475 Missing shortly after take-off from Taipei en route Bangkok; 11 on board (Note: was returning to Thailand from Japan after servicing) Crashed into high ground during a go-around in bad weather at Korat AFB; 6 killed 27Apr65 A-1H Skyraider USN – VA215 Bu137545 Damaged by AA fire and abandoned 2 miles from Nakhon Phanom; 1 escaped 27Apr65 F-86L Sabre Thai AF 12May65 F-105D Thunderchief USAF – 23TFW 61-0125 Crashed 3 miles north east of Ban Phon Daeng following engine failure; 1 survived 15May65 F-105D Thunderchief USAF – 23TFW 62-4374 Crashed on take-off from Takhli AFB & dbf at Village 4, Amphoe Takhli; 1 killed on ground, 10 injured 20May65 T-28 Trojan RLaoAF O-17741 Crashed shortly after take-off from Udorn; repaired 05Jun65 F-105D Thunderchief USAF – 23TFW 61-0133 Damaged by AA fire over Laos and abandoned east of Nong Khai, just inside Thailand; 1 ejected mid1965 Fairchild C-123B Thai AF L4-01/07 Damaged on landing at Takhli; repaired by Feb-66 1965 T-28D Trojan Thai AF Crashed whilst performing low-level aerobatics; 2 killed 25Jun65 T-28D Trojan Thai AF 28Jun65 Lockheed T-33A Thai AF F11-1/98 or F11-2/98 03Jul65 F-105D Thunderchief USAF – 23TFW 62-4398 Force-landed in a paddy field, believed about 40km north of Udorn (17.750°, 102.716667°); 1 rescued & returned to Udorn While entering the landing pattern at Ubon AFB, on a flight from Don Mueang, the pilot made a low break followed by a right aileron roll, but lost power and crashed; 2 killed (pilot, plus backseater Flt Lt Niyom Lekkhow) Crashed due to fuel starvation, north of Udorn AFB; 1 survived 07Jul65 F-86L Sabre Thai AF Kh17k-18/06 / 30978 Two F-86’s collided in mid-air; 1 killed (wingman); 1 ejected (pilot of the lead aircraft) Destroyed in crash Crashed into Chao Phraya river in front of Pak Kret irrigation school, Nonburi 6 minutes after take-off from Don Mueang; 1 ejected.
