Directors’ Notes
I fell in love with the movie Hairspray in 2007 as I walked down the streets of
Baltimore with Tracy Turnblad as she sang of the city she loved. I bought the
CD and knew every word to every song in 2 days. When I saw the stage version
at the Dock Street Theater in 2011, my first thought was, “We could do this at
The Strand.” So, 3 years, a few doubts, fears, and tears and tons of excitement
later, here we are at my Swamp Fox Players directorial debut. Eeek! I have been
teaching English at Andrews High School since 1987 and began directing student performances and teaching drama in 2006. I can spend all day working
with students but this offered a new challenge: adults! But this cast has been
phenomenal! Everyone has pitched in and stepped up beyond the call of duty
when I had to go out of town for 10 days to take care of a family emergency.

I could not have asked for a better group of people to share my debut with. I
especially want to thank Joe Ford for stepping in as director while I was away;
Tracy Crane, my props, stage, costume and life support manager; Wanda
Duncan, my music expert and new BFF; Lee Padgett, who got me into this
in the first place years ago with Everyone Loves Opal; Josie Thames, Brandon
Shoemaker, Ayanna Shivers and Stephen Stewart who have done more than
any cast member should have to do; and my husband Herb Anderson who has
been so supportive and overall fantastic even though I dragged him into the
cast so we could spend time together! I hope you have as much fun watching
as we had creating this performance for you.
