Salhouse Neighbourhood Plan
UPDATE
Thank you to all those who attended the recent open
day and were able to discuss the plan and let us have your thoughts on the
proposed policies. We have now collated these and are considering them as we
finalise proposals.
For the benefit of those unable to attend the information provided at the open
day is given below. We would welcome any further thoughts you may have as
soon as possible as we are now in the final stages of preparing the documents
for statutory consultation. Your comments can be sent to the Parish Clerk or

Where are we now?








The Sustainability Appraisal Scoping Report has now completed the
statutory consultation stage with the relevant bodies – we have to
make one or two minor amendments.
We need to finalise the precise wording of the policies to ensure
compliance with higher level policies and complete one or two minor
sections of the Plan.
We then have to complete a sustainability summary for each policy.
Next, the Plan goes to a public consultation for 6 weeks.
Views are taken into account and amendments made if appropriate.
The Plan is then submitted for Independent Examination.
When the Plan has passed the examination (we are told this could take
about 6 months) there will be a referendum within the Parish to
confirm its acceptance.
Once accepted it becomes an integral part of the Broadland District
Council Local Plan.
As for the Plan itself, the proposed policies, which have been formulated from
feedback at the several open days and other discussions with various parties,
are:
HOUSING
H1 - New Housing Development
New housing development will normally be within the defined settlement
boundary for the village. Any new housing development should consist of
single dwellings or small scale developments (up to 5 dwellings) with positive
support for smaller units of accommodation (up to three bedrooms). All new
housing should be designed to be in character with the local surrounding area,
respecting the semi-rural nature of the village and its conservation area
designation.

H2 – Housing Mix
The plan supports a mix of house types, including a high quality of housing
design that suits differing life stages and economic positions.
H3 - Provision of Sheltered Housing within the village
The development of new sheltered housing will be welcomed. Any new sheltered
housing should be compatible with the local surrounding area, of an appropriate
size for the village and respect the amenities of neighbouring uses. This may be
considered outside the settlement limit if there is specific justification and the site
is appropriate.
ENVIRONMENT
OE1 Development and the Natural Heritage
The Plan supports development which avoids damage to the natural heritage –
where damage cannot be avoided there must be restoration of a similar nature
either on site or elsewhere in the village.
OE2 Protection of Green Spaces
The Plan supports development that has no significant impact on green spaces
which are felt by the village to be of particular value.
OE3 Enhancement of our Natural Heritage and Green Spaces
Proposals which have an overall net benefit for the natural heritage, either
through increasing the natural heritage resource, improving its condition or its
quality, or by making it more accessible for local people, will be supported.
Proposals that link fragmented green space, change land use from intensive
practises to uses more sympathetic to natural heritage or restore areas that have
been destroyed or damaged in the past, will be welcomed.
OE4 Protecting Our Dark Night Skies
Development proposals should include provisions for conserving dark skies,
which is a highly valued feature within the village. Given the value attached to
the village’s dark skies, proposals for street lighting will be resisted unless
required under legislation
OE5 Protecting Landscape Quality
Development that maintains or enhances the quality of the village landscape will
be supported. Development which significantly impacts on the village landscape
will only be acceptable if suitable mitigation or enhancement is secured. The
Salhouse Conservation Area Character Statement 2013 will be the benchmark
against which proposals will be assessed.
OE6 Managing Land Use Change
The Plan supports development or land use change which provides additional
assets while also maintaining the quality of the village landscape. Change of use
from commercial or agricultural land to allotments, sports fields, village green or
public open space would all be viewed positively
OE7: Promoting Improved Connectedness in the Parish
Developments which improve foot and cycle connections between village assets
will be regarded favourably, as long as they do not have significant negative
impacts on other features of heritage value in the village.

OE8: Promoting a Safer, Low Carbon Village
Development proposals which reduce conflict between pedestrians and cyclists
and motorised traffic, or proposals which directly improve safety in the village
will be supported.
EMPLOYMENT
EMP1 Existing facilities
The plan supports improvements to the existing Wood Green commercial area
and the inclusion of provision for starter units. The loss of other existing smaller
businesses within the village will be resisted unless alternative provision is
provided elsewhere within the village in an appropriate location.
EMP2 New facilities
The plan encourages small scale employment uses provided they are appropriate
to a rural area and do not impact on the character of the area or the amenity of
residents.
GENERAL PROJECTS
The Information Base.
The Parish will develop an improved information base to better inform decision
making and to enable sustainable management of the village. This will include
survey and mapping of environmental features of the village. The information
resource will be available to any interested parties.
Developing an Integrated Village Path Network
We will identify new permissive paths that contribute to the development of a
village path network which links the village core and its gateways with the rural
hinterland and our natural and built heritage features. Infrastructure needed for
the path may include path surfacing, signs, path-side furniture and structures
such as footbridges and gates. These should be located and designed in
sympathy with the village landscape. We will use opportunities arising from
development or other land use and planning changes to further this project
Enhancement of the playing field
The Parish Council have sought your views on this. If planning permission would
be required to implement your views, it may be necessary to include a specific
policy within the plan rather than deal with this as a project.
Watch out for information from Salhouse 2020+ to let you know the start date of
the Public Consultation and where copies of the Plan and Sustainability
Appraisal can be viewed. We hope that this process will start before the end of
May.

Following the closure of the NatWest bank last year there is now a
mobile bank on Tuesdays and Fridays between 10.15am and 12noon at
the Broadland Youth & Community Centre, Stalham Rd, Hoveton.
Wroxham & District Ladies' Luncheon Club
We meet on the first Tuesday of each month (excluding July, August and
September) for an excellent lunch followed by a talk on a variety of subjects
which is always interesting and entertaining. New members and visitors are
always welcome to join us for good company, and to hear speakers on a wide

From The Parish Council
On 30th January we held an ‘Open Day’-style event at the Jubilee Hall, primarily
for the Neighbourhood Plan (on which there is a report elsewhere in this Saga),
but also, as a separate consultation, to get some ideas of what new or
improved facilities residents would like to see at the Recreation Ground. Many
thanks to all who attended and gave us their views. The Parish Council has a
sum of money allocated to it for this project; this is not the Council’s own
money (and therefore, not taxpayers’ money) but developer’s funding allocated
to us on a ‘use it or lose it’ basis.
In addition, the developer who is planning to build four houses on land to the
rear of Lower Street has offered to provide new and improved changing rooms
on the field, so we would like to ensure that both these projects can go ahead
together.
In summary, many people have suggested alternative sports facilities; by far
the majority would like to see a MUGA (Multi Use Games Area) with an allweather surface suitable for five-a-side football, basketball, netball, and other
games. Other popular suggestions included various forms of landscaping
around the perimeter of the ground, such as flower beds and picnic areas,
possibly linked by a path; improved play equipment for children, but also adult
outdoor fitness equipment; a better car park and toilets; less emphasis on use
only for football. Interestingly, opinion was almost equally divided between
those who would like to allow dogs and those who would want the existing ban
to continue.
These proposals would take us into a different ‘league’ in terms of facilities on
offer, so we will be asking for any clubs who may be interested in using a
‘MUGA’ to get in touch, as it may be necessary to have some sort of
management committee such as at the Jubilee Hall.
I have to admit that this is something of a ‘wish list’ at the moment, all subject
to the availability of money, but now we have a better idea what people want,
we can hopefully put together a budget and then find the necessary funding to
make it happen.
Finally, as always it seems, I have to repeat yet again that we need more local
people to volunteer as councillors. We still have seven vacancies on the
Parish Council. Applications can be made at any time and new councillors can
join the council through the co-option process without the need for an election.

The pretty little Swiss town of Mayenfield lies at the foot of a
mountain range, whose grim rigged peaks tower high above the
valley below.

The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 2015
I have now received the Poppy Appeal results for 2015. The total raised
in my area was £2,281. A British Legion service held at South Walsham
church raised £289. The total for Norfolk, at present, stands at £570,959
with more results still to come in.

that had donation boxes.

A letter from your Broadland District Councillors
Winter will soon be behind us and we look forward to what should be an exciting
year for Salhouse.
Firstly, as we promised at the election, Broadland Council has not increased its
own precept. As Councillors representing all residents we have been pushing
Broadland District Council to look for even more savings in its operations,
although this is getting harder as they have already picked out the biggest and
best savings. The services that BDC provides have not been reduced but they
have had to tweak a few of the services to ensure that they are not lost.
You will by now know that work on the NDR has started and there are a few
disruptions happening to the road network in the Plumstead area as the
contractors re-route cables etc. across roads. The Salhouse Village Facebook
page is a good way to keep up to date with road works etc.
Getting back to the activities in Salhouse, there is going to be a Scouting
Jamboree happening. It should be an exciting event for Salhouse as there are
historical links with the Scouting movement. For more information please look to
the Salhouse Parish Council as there has been a liaison officer appointed to coordinate the event from the Parishes point of view. Of course, the event
organisers will be notifying the village via the notice boards etc.
The neighbourhood plan for Salhouse is progressing well and consultations with
residents will ensure that the plan contains the requirements of all the residents of
Salhouse. Please get involved – it’s your plan. A lot of hard work has gone
into this plan by village volunteers and it will ensure that whenever Broadland
Council receives a planning application the first document that they will reach for
is the Salhouse Neighbourhood Plan. It is a very powerful legal document and
both of your District Councillors will be fully supportive of its content because it is
Your Plan.
Finally, Salhouse is a village of about 1,300 residents and only three of the Parish
Councillors plus the Chairman live in the village. The other three Parish
Councillors are from outside and have had to be co-opted onto the Council by
BDC due to an apparent lack of interest from the residents. We find it difficult to
believe that there is nobody out there who wouldn’t want to be part of such a
thriving little village. So, please, if anyone can help then please come along to a
meeting and volunteer. It might add a new dimension to your place in the village.

Many of you will remember Claud Jenkinson for whom this Obituary was
kindly provided by his daughter, Sandra Edwards
Claud Jenkinson
Claud Jenkinson passed away at home on 1st August 2015, aged 98 years, after
several years being bedridden. He had a very interesting life but a difficult
childhood - he was sent to the Alexandra Orphanage in Hampstead, London aged
7 years old, occasionally returning home to family for a holiday. He left the
orphanage aged 15 and returned to Norwich to begin work as an apprentice
mechanic at Mann Egerton. He remained here for 5 years but due to the
depression sought a more resourceful job and eventually found a job driving a
HGV exhibition van for Lyons, covering the British Isles.
At the outbreak of the war in 1939 he was enlisted to the Royal Army Service
Corps, initially in a clerical role. However due to his mechanical training he was
needed elsewhere and he played a vital role disabling vehicles prior to the
evacuation of Dunkirk. He then travelled to many parts of the world in the
course of duty, became a corporal and eventually a sergeant. Because of his
height he would always remind those who visited him at home that in Italy he
was known as ‘Piccolo Sargenti! He remained in the Army until 1946 and
returned to Norwich where he became a mechanic at the Melrose Garage.
Claud met Joyce and they married in 1948, moving into 54 Salhouse Road,
Rackheath. Sandra was born in 1950 and in 1951, they started the garage in
Rackheath, known as Hazeldene Motors (now Howes Motor Engineers).
The house next door was built in 1954 and the family moved into it in 1955.
Claud & Joyce became very involved in both parishes of Rackheath & Salhouse,
especially in both churches. He was also involved in other village activities,
sitting on both Local & District Councils and helping with the local scouts.
He retired at the age of 67 and the property at 54 Salhouse Road was available to
buy, so Claud & Joyce enjoyed their retirement at the home where they started
their married life. He enjoyed being with the family and was very proud of them
all. As his health deteriorated he was able to remain at home with 24 hour care
for which his family are very grateful.

Salhouse VC Primary School
With such a short spring term, the staff at school
have been very busy trying to make sure we don’t miss
out, not just on the children’s learning, but on the seasonal
celebrations and events that we look forward to at this time of year.
We recently celebrated the beginning of Lent with the making of
pancakes to prepare us for Eastertime.
In addition to that, as a church school, we are not only inspected by
Ofsted but we also have another inspection called a SIAMS
(Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools). This
inspection looks very closely at our Christian values and their impact
on the children. This term, we are focusing on ‘justice’ and ‘humility’.

bottom of the page, you will be able to read the latest inspection
which occurred just before half term.
To summarise some of the main points, the inspector was impressed
with the strong relationships which exist between the staff and
pupils. He also recognised the efforts we make to develop strong
relationships with parents, the church and the local community. In
two of the three major areas he inspected, we were judged to be
‘outstanding’. We are truly blessed to have such a wonderful school
and I recognise the part that we all play in making that happen.
This week we have seen the children enjoy World Book Day by
dressing up in character costumes. We then rounded off the week
with a special service to thank our mothers for all that they do in a
special Mother’s Day celebration.

Salhouse Scouts to host Commemorative
Scouting Centenary St Georges Day Event
Salhouse Scouts are very honoured to have been asked to host this event as Salhouse
has a strong link with Scouting. Lord Baden Powell, the Founder of Scouting, visited a
Jamboree held at Salhouse Broad on 6th - 9th June 1930, where Lord Baden Powell
attended with Prince George (Duke of Kent) and 2000 Scouts.
This historic link to the site has led us to ask the local land owner, Mr Henry Cator, for
permission to hold our 'St George's Day Parade' at the broad in Salhouse for which he
has very kindly agreed.
2016 is also the centenary for Cub Scouting, with a year of celebrations planned, which
we are tying in with our St George's Day parade, making it 'extra special' for the scouting
youngsters to enjoy, through the medieval entertainment we are providing for them.
At our historical event, there will be a flag parade of colours, lead by 'St George' himself,
riding on horseback and leading the parade to Salhouse Broad. The parade will assemble
on the playing field at Thieves Lane and move off at 11am, marching along Lower Street,
taking the route to Upper Street via The Loke and then on to the site at Salhouse Broad,
through Mr Cator's land.
Over 500 Scouts from the 14 groups, which make up the District of North East Norfolk,
will be joined by the '901 Troop Marine Cadets', marching band. The marching parade
will pass through our small village of Salhouse, for all to see and once at the site, they will
join in with a short service and listen to the famous story of 'St George and The Dragon',
re-told by a professional storyteller. After the renewal of Scouting promises, everyone will
join in some traditional camp fire songs, Jamboree style and then enjoy a traditional 'Hog
Roast'.
This will be followed by some medieval entertainment, which will include a 'Birds of Prey'
static display, a look at Armour and Weaponry with 'Sir Tim the Knight', a play of St
George's victory over rescuing a princess from a fire breathing dragon, displays of sword
fighting and archery from the 'Dragon Shields' and an opportunity for everyone to
contribute to our 'Friendship Tree', where they can tie their 'words and quotes' to a tree,
using colourful ribbons.
We have also invited our Chief Scout, Bear Grylls, should he wish to accept our invitation
and hopefully arrive, winched down from a helicopter!
The Scouts from 1st Salhouse, have been helping to raise money through our own
fundraising, which has included a Family Bingo, where we split the funds raised, with
Quiddenham Hospice.
We have a Coin Spiral planned at Roys of Wroxham in April and a group Sponsored Bike
Ride in March, both will contribute to much needed funds for our big event on the 17th of
April 2016.
Unfortunately our own fundraising is not enough to cover the costs of this event, so we
have been writing to local businesses, companies and charities requesting financial
assistance to help us put together a memorable event in our 'St George's Day Parade'.
Our aim is to provide some memories of Salhouse 2016, for the Beavers, Cubs and
Scouts through our Jamboree style 'St George's Day Parade', and themed activities as
well as the celebration of the life of our Patron Saint, St George.

Reflection from the Rectory
Spring really gets underway with the celebration of Easter, for
Christians it is the greatest feast of the year. But it can be
confusing because unlike Christmas, the date changes. Whilst Christmas
day can always be relied upon to be the twenty fifth of December? Easter
can have a month’s difference in its timing. So some years it seems no
sooner have we put the Christmas decorations away still feeling in the party
mood, than we are eating pancakes and the season of Lent is upon us. And
it has always been that way, within a hundred years of that first Easter,
Christians were already at odds over when to celebrate the event. There
were those who wanted to celebrate Easter on the day Jesus arose, a
Sunday, and those who wanted to celebrate it on Passover, regardless of
which day it fell during the week. Well, after a long time and some
complicated negotiation that went on for many years the Church determined
that Easter should be first Sunday following the first full moon after the spring
equinox.
It is a season that we are told more than half of the population no longer
understands but still believes is worth keeping because it marks a milestone
in the calendar, and because of that fact people tend to approach it in
different ways, using it as a bank holiday to get out into the garden after the
months of winter, or decorate the house, maybe a enjoying the time to stop
and notice the world around them. Something that seems very 21 st century
and yet previous generation had similar ideas.
In medieval times it was the tradition time when, people cleaned their houses
and decorated them with greenery and flowers in honour of the feast –
perhaps an early version of spring cleaning. It was also around this time that
the practise of giving and receiving of eggs was something for the grownups,
especially courting couples as a sign of affection with the hint of fertility being
implied. Throughout the centuries this simple gesture has expanded, and
now the giving of Easter eggs, both the hard-boiled and chocolate varieties
is something that is a tradition throughout the world, although the meanings
can vary from country to country. From the lavish gesture of the Russian
royal family, who until their downfall in the revolution would give to one and
other and members of their court, eggs made of precious metal and
encrusted with Jewels made by Faberge, each containing an extra surprise
inside, which could be a miniature clock, a music box, or some kind of
automaton, to the more simpler gesture of adults hiding eggs in the garden,
and children going out with a basket to find them. Or decorating boiled eggs
and rolling them down a hill, to symbolise the rolling away of the stone from
the tomb of Jesus, which is at the heart of this season that has a resonance
with nature. Even in the most urban parts of Britain, in which most of the
population actually live, there is a feeling of celebration about this time of
year.

….Reflection from the Rectory
New life is in evidence all around us, with trees bursting into leaf, spring
flowers in bloom and birds nesting and singing, even in the largest cities
as well as the gardens and parks. And there is something in that that new
life that captures our imagination as we look at it and see something of a
sense of wonder at the mystery that we spend our existence trying to
understand, when life seems to spring out of the lifeless earth and plants
that have lain dormant, emerge. It is as though we are looking at
something wonderful for the first time. Just as a group of distraught
women and frightened men found when they came to visit the grave of
their master, and discovered that because of him death was not the end of
life, but a new beginning.

Beavers
Well what a start to the new year, which now seems so far away now,
as the Beavers and Cubs have been busy working on earning more badges.
Both groups started the year gaining points towards their Air Activities badge.
They have found out about various aircraft and had fun making paper
airplanes and having competitions as to whose could fly the furthest and stay
in the air the longest. The leaders had just as much fun as the children.
The two groups started on their disability badge by having a visit from
Keith, Marion and Shayla. Keith is visually impaired and brought his guide dog
‘Shayla’ along to talk to the children about the work of the Guide Dogs for the
Blind Association and how he copes with everyday challenges and how he
uses Shayla to help him get around. All the children were fascinated and it
was very enlightening. The children have also been learning basic sign
language and had a visit from a student nurse Sammy who taught them to
sign their name, please and thank you and learnt some animal signs. It will
conclude with a visit to the Sprowston Community Hub on 23rd March to look
at the disabled facilities.
Both groups have been keeping fit and active with a taster session of of
how to use and jump on a trampoline by the Dragon Trampoline Club at
Easton. Children were taught the basics and also how to do somersaults. We
could have some future Olympians in our mists. We are hoping to have a
session of Shotokhan Karate and fencing in the near future to keep up the
fitness theme. Still on the fitness side, the children are going to be doing a
sponsored cycle ride along the Bure Valley Railway footpath.
Mothers day wasn’t forgotten by the children and both groups were
hard at work one evening creating wonderful gifts for their mothers ranging
from truffles to bath bombs, lucky mums.
This year celebrates 100 years of Cub Scouts and as part of this the
cubs have 100 new challenges to try and do before the end of the year. Some
things are going to be done as a group and other things are being done by the
individuals. It promises to be an interesting year. Continuing with the 100
years of Cubs, this year 1st Salhouse are holding the annual St Georges Day
parade and service which the different units within North East Norfolk District
each take turns to organize. As it is a special year we are organizing a special
event to be held at Salhouse Broad on Sunday 17th April. There will be more
details posted around the village soon and everyone will be welcome to line
the streets for the main parade of approx. 500 children.

Planned Village Events and ideas for the
future
From a casual suggestion that there should be something in the village to
celebrate the Queen’s birthday(s) this year, in this Saga you will see there are
two events - one for the Queen’s actual birthday celebration and one for her
official birthday!
Mr & Mrs Henry Cator have very generously invited anyone in the village to join
them at Broad Farm 7.30pm on Thursday 21st April for the lighting of a beacon
to celebrate the Queen’s birthday. You will need to tell them you are coming full details in the announcement elsewhere in this Saga. The second event for
the ‘official’ birthday will be a ‘street party’ in the Jubilee Hall car park from 12
midday on Sunday 12th June - everybody welcome, and again see the separate
announcement. Add to your diary now - posters with more details of the
Queen’s birthday picnic in June will be displayed around the village nearer the
time.
Two villagers are (as I write) organising the street party, and we think it would
be a great idea to make sure that each year there is at least one event that
brings the village together. We will try to make sure there is something
happening every year, not necessarily taking organisational responsibility unless
we have to.
In the past there have been fetes at the school and playing field, and an annual
new years day walk - perhaps we could resurrect that for the first day of 2017.
If you would like to join an informal group to help co-ordinate future events you
would be very welcome, call me on 720772. If you can help out with the picnic
perhaps helping setting up or sweeping up afterwards - or know where you can
get your hands on a music system so we can play some appropriate music - that
would be appreciated. Local musicians welcome too! Again, please give me a

Team Salhouse
‘Proud of our village’
On Friday, 5th February the Team carried out a group litter
pick around the playing field, along Bell Lane, Stonehouse Rd
and the roundabout on Norwich Rd. Along Bell Lane we found
debris left over from recent car incidents which were too
heavy for us to dispose of, these two piles of debris, one
located approximately half way between the Bell corner and
Salhouse Church and the other close to the gas pumping
building were removed and disposed of by Broadland D C. In under two hours 5
large bin bags of litter were collected. Two weeks later again we noticed a
large amount of debris at 'Hills and Holes' on the way to Wroxham. This was
also left behind following a road traffic accidents and again too much for us to
deal with, thankfully Broadland District Council came to the rescue and
removed it.
Keeping the village litter-free continues, and by the time you read this our
Team will have joined in the nationwide 'Clean for the Queen' initiative by
tackling the footpaths outside the village.
One area which will definitely
benefit from our services is the Station car park which attracts a lot of
rubbish.
It’s nice to see the flower beds around the village beginning to burst into life,
and from time to time you will see us around weeding and tidying up.

Anyone with an interest in any type of car of any age (we are also happy to start

Art Week at Salhouse Primary School

The last week of February at Salhouse School was art week. This year's
theme was 'cultures from around the world' and the whole school worked
together to create a stunning gallery of global art.
In Coots (Years R and 1), the art was originally from the Maori tribes in
New Zealand. They used to tattoo their whole bodies in different patterns
to make themselves look fierce in battle. Everyone took photos of their
faces and painted on them to show what they would look like if they
belonged to a Maori tribe.
In Bitterns (years 2 and 3), the artwork was inspired by Canadian
lnukshuks (more commonly known as the Vancouver 2010 Winter
Olympics logo). First, models were made from stones and then we
progressed to making clay models. After that, we drew them and made
prints of them
The afternoon in Grebes (years 3, 4 and 5) was based on Australian
Aboriginal dot paintings. The best technique to get a perfect circle with a
paintbrush is to smother the wooden end of the brush in paint until it is
literally dripping and carefully drip the paint onto the paper (ensuring the
brush doesn't touch the paper)
Totem poles were the inspiration for the Herons class (years 5 and 6),
which originally came from the west of North America. We started off
drawing our own totem pole designs and then we painted them onto
acetate As they are waterproof ,we are planning to put them on a tree on
our field to make our very own totem pole.
Everyone has had a great time exploring lots of techniques - we can't wait
for art week next year!

Winter Works
The team at Salhouse Broad have
been keeping busy over the winter.
Apart from the annual maintenance
we carry out on site, we also fell
dangerous trees, do boardwalk and
path maintenance, canoe and boat
servicing and repair, improving and repairing signage over the site, cutting back
brambles and willow weaving to mention a few. We have also worked on a few
bigger projects this winter to help conserve and maintain Salhouse Broad as a
site for all to enjoy.
Back in November we raked the reed bed and cleared the scrub in one of the
seven sections of reed bed we have designated to be cut on a seven year
rotation, as well as the bank area leading up to the play area. The aging reed
bed in both sites are dominated by Common Reed, which is an active coloniser
of wet ground and forms a transition stage in the eventual succession to
woodland. The accumulation of vegetation and litter results in the gradual drying
of the bed, allowing invasion of carr, scrub or woodland. In order to help slow the
process of succession and allow the reed bed to persist, a team of volunteers
and rangers have cut the reed bed with a reciprocating scythe and cleared the
leaf litter from the site. By removing trees and material inhibiting reed bed
habitats, the crowding of root structures is reduced which helps stimulate the
production of new reed. Continuing the life of the reed bed will improve
biodiversity through increasing habitats for a range of species of both plant and
animal, including Cetti’s Warbler, Bearded Tit and Water Vole. The brash has
been collected and used to make faggots, which are tightly bound bundles of
sticks, which have been staked into some of the banks as a form of erosion
control. In January the team worked on digging out the ditches along the main
path to allow for drainage in wet periods.
We also patch repaired the quay heading adjacent to the hill to give it more
stability in its old age. The other section of quay next to the beach is currently
being replaced by outside contractors. We have also made a start on laying the
hedge that borders the campsite using the traditional Middlesex style. Hedge
laying involves partially cutting through stems, laying them over and weaving
them together to produce a thick living barrier, which re-grows from the base. We
have began this project to help rejuvenate the hedgerow by encouraging it to put
on new growth and to help improve its overall structure and strength which
allows it to better protect wildlife, as well as to improve its aesthetic.
Looking Ahead
Looking ahead to the summer season, the canoe and kayak hire will return along
with ferry trips to Hoveton Great Broad, with moorings on site and the camping
corner open for business once more. We look forward to working closely with
Hoveton Great Broad as the team go into their initial year of the five year project

funded by Heritage Lottery. We have the pleasure of hosting the Scouts St
Georges Day parade being held on Sunday 17th April. We will also be running
the Dawn Chorus walk, the Spring Bat Walk, the Wildflower Walk and the
Dragonflies and Butterflies walk. Please check our website for details and do let
us know if you would like to reserve a place.
As many of you will be aware, Salhouse Broad will be closed for the majority of
March, allowing contractors to work on replacing our quay heading. Due to
works potentially needing to run into the Easter break, we are sad to say the
Easter Egg Hunt, organised by community organisation Friends of Salhouse
Broad, has been cancelled for this year. Due to this, FOSB will instead be
organising a summer fete which will take place in early summer. We aim to open
the site for moorings, camping, canoe and kayak hire and the ferry service on
March 25th, although this is dependant upon the quay heading works being
completed in time. Please do check our website, facebook page or give us a ring
for more information on both the fete and updates on the date the Broad will
reopen to the public. I would like to say a very big thank you for the continued
support of residents of Salhouse and we look forward to seeing you at the Broad
in Springtime.

Farming in Salhouse
Spring has just about sprung. We have spread lime, muck and fertiliser ,
ploughed & cultivated most fields and are now about to start spring planting of
malting barley, parsnips, sugar beet, potatoes, and horseradish . All destined to
be planted by the end of April. The sheep have all grazed the overwintered
turnips leaving a good coat of manure behind, not quite the golden hoof of the
18th century but another part of our integrated approach to farming sustainably
to continue in our quest to maximise our production of food for the consumer
(you & I) in harmony with the environment and landscape. Have a good Easter
and spare a thought for the tractor drivers who if the sun is shining will all have
to work through, but hopefully off for Easter Day itself.

SALHOUSE VILLAGE HALL
at the heart of your community
At the start of last December we held our annual Christmas Fayre. Once
again we had a great turn out from the village and the hall was full from
start to finish, so thank you to everyone that came and supported us. We
raised a record amount for hall funds, which was matched by Britvic Soft
Drinks, and felt like a good kick off to the festive season.
The funds raised from the Christmas Fayre will go towards the upkeep of
the hall. We will need to replace a number of the fence panels where they
have been damaged by cars. Please be careful when manoeuvring into
the parking spaces and remember to stop! This summer we plan to
redecorate the inside of the hall from top to bottom. Seems simple but with
the height of the ceilings that is not a simple undertaking, so we will need
to raise lots more over the year to cover the cost of the works. So if you
need a venue for a party, or are looking for somewhere to hold a club or
meeting then please think about the hall as you will be helping towards the
upkeep of this lovely hall.
We recently held our AGM and sadly Tobi has decided to resign both from
the committee and as one of the village hall charity trustees. Tobi has
done so much for the village over the years from Broads Ranger, to
leading the Youth Club. He has also been an active member of the hall
committee. Tobi has now moved further away and he will be sadly missed
around the village and by the committee. The committee would like to
thank Tobi for all his contributions over the last 3 years and wish him all
the best with his new family (you can still see/hear Tobi if you take a trip
on one of the Broads Tours boats J).
If you have any ideas to help raise money for the upkeep of the village hall
or want to get involved we are looking for new committee members and
another trustee. We are a friendly group who meet 4 times a year to
discuss the running of the hall and share the workload between us, so it
does not become a big time commitment. If you are interested and would
like to volunteer or would like more information please contact myself on
the number below.

Salhouse Reading Group
Happy New Year! Hopefully Spring will have sprung by
now and we can look forward to bright, sunny days.
Our December book was Beautiful Ruins, by Jess Walter. When
Hollywood comes to Rome in 1962 for the filming of “Cleopatra”, it impacts
on the life of a young man in a small Italian coastal village. His
experiences with the rich and famous, especially the fallout from the
Elizabeth Taylor/Richard Burton affair, make him question his actions and
decisions, and he is able to resolve them. The story shifts to present day
Hollywood, where our hero, now an old man, tries to bring “closure” to the
victims of this notorious affair. The book seemed to have all the elements
of an interesting read, but it just didn’t succeed with us. It was not liked by
100% of our group.
All was not lost, as we enjoyed some Christmas nibbles and drinks for this
last meeting of 2015.
By contrast, our next book, The Uncommon Reader, by Alan Bennett, was
enjoyed, to some degree or other, by us all. What happens when The
Queen, on a slow day, makes her way down to the kitchens, just to have a
nosy, and discovers the mobile library is parked outside? And, with the
help of one of the staff, she is able to check out a book! How will this affect
Great Britain???? This is a cleverly written, humorous little book, with a
nice twist at the end.
Sunday Express calls Philippa Gregory ”‘the mistress of the historical
novel”. We had a history lesson about The War of the Roses with The
Red Queen, where Gregory tells the story of Margaret Beaufort, of the
House of Lancaster. In 1455, while still a young girl, she is made to enter a
loveless marriage with Edmund Tudor in order to produce an heir to the
throne. Determined to see her son Henry become king, she spends her
life intriguing and planning for the rebellion which will remove the usurper
Richard III of the House of York. The author brings this period to life with
meticulously researched detail. She brings a strong female character to
life. One reader said, “Margaret was determined to sign her name with an
“R.”
We all liked this book to some degree. For a few, it wasn’t a period of
interest. Others have read all the books in the series.
We hope you enjoy Spring and manage to get a few books read in
between gardening and walks in the sunshine!

1St & 2nd Salhouse Brownies
We’ve all said it before…. How quickly times
flies! It only seems like a few weeks ago that
2nd Salhouse Brownies were entertaining
parents and friends with their Enchanted Tales. This was the culmination of their work
on a challenge badge that had seen them enjoying a huge variety of activities based
on Disney films. It was encouraging to know that they were all still familiar with stories
such as Sleeping Beauty and Snow White in these times of computer and mobile
phone games.
Both units joined with other members from our district for our annual Christmas Disco –
another successful event with over 100 girls joining in. I can’t say much for the leaders
dancing skills though!!
Since Christmas 1st Salhouse Brownies have welcomed 6 new girls to the unit. As well
as learning about the Guiding Promise and what Brownies entails, the new girls have
joined in with the rest of the unit to celebrate Burns Night, Chinese New Year and
Shrove Tuesday. Thanks to the wi-fi now available at the hall we were able to play
appropriate music for the girls to have a go at Scottish dancing - some confusion, quite
tiring and logs of giggles. As it was the turn of the Monkey for Chinese New Year the
girls made sock monkeys - quite sticky. They made and ate pancakes on Shrove
Tuesday – again quite sticky – and held pancake races and games.
Since January the Brownies from 2nd Salhouse have enjoyed craft activities including
making dream catchers, mosaics, genie lamps and Arabic writing. Along the way all of
the girls have completed their Adventure badges.
Together with Brownies from Neatishead and Coltishall units, Salhouse Brownies
enjoyed a fantastic pack holiday based on sheep! Yes, our Woolly Woolly week at the
Jarman Centre in Newmarket was very fleecy. We started our week with a visit to a
rare breeds farm to cuddle lambs, watch tiny piglets chasing around and helping to
collect eggs laid by the rescued hens. One Brownie almost lost a glove when a large
Highland cow licked it clean off her hand as she was offering it food. The glove
obviously didn’t taste good as the cow quickly spat it out – oooooo gooey! During the
week the Brownies got a chance to see horses at Newmarket gallops, took a walk and
played hide-and-seek in the woods, made loads of crafty items to take home and had
their own sheep dog trials! The week ended with a brilliant sheep party, which
included dressing up as sheep (including Salhouse Brown Owls!) and enjoying a barn
dance.
At the end of February girls from the whole district joined together again for our fun
Thinking Day based on Mission Spectacular – a Girlguiding challenge for all to enjoy.
Again over well 100 members joined in this annual celebration.

Salhouse & District Gardening Club
We had a very successful social evening in
December - this year held at Jubilee Hall due to a
clash with school events, and we continue to have
an almost full house at our regular club meetings. Our
finances are back to the level required and there will be no
increase in subscriptions for 2016 / 2017.
The programme for 2016/ 2017 is now completed. Our
annual day trip will take place on Thursday 14th June
2016; arrangements still need to be finalised and members
will be given the itinerary as soon as we can, but please
book the date in your diaries if you haven’t already done so.
We are also organising the annual Spring Plant Sale at
Jubilee Hall on Saturday 16th April. As well as good value
plants, there will be refreshments available and a raffle to
raise funds for the club.

The project to produce a book on the history of

I have had many offers of help from many people in the village, all of
which I have accepted, including personal reminiscences, interesting
documents and period photographs. We are getting close to our target
date for submission of the draft text, which is May 1st. However, it is still
not too late to offer a contribution, old photographs and personal
memories are particularly welcome. They don’t have to be 100 years old
either, 20 years is enough; to a 16 year-old, the twentieth century is
already history!

It has been a busy time for
Friends of Salhouse School. The
new committee have settled into
their roles and are planning
events for the rest of the year.
So far we have had a successful bingo evening, bag2school, school
disco & cake sale, all have raised great amounts for the school.
On the 18th March we will be holding an Easter fair in the school hall,
all are very welcome. There will be an Easter egg hunt, raffle,
tombola, craft stall and games to play such as hoopla, pick a pin and
guess the name of the bunny. Refreshments will also be available and a
cake stall.
The date for the summer fair has been agreed as the 15 th July. We
shall communicate further details once available.

Salhouse Rovers Football Club
All football has been going well, with the weather being on our
side. Our under 7`s and under 10`s youngsters are enjoying
their development football.
They are playing all over the county and are learning and enjoying the
experience.
The seniors have had a tough season with a shortage of matches as adult
teams are folding on a regular basis.
The costs involved and courses that have to be attended are never ending,
so its not surprising that we are losing clubs, which is a big shame.
All our teams welcome new players so please get in touch.
Our annual tournament is on the 4th and 5th June.
We have a great reputation for a well run, organised event and so attract
well over 100 teams.
Ages are under 7`s to under 15`s
We hope to see villagers up the field to enjoy the football and also have a
cuppa and a bite from the bar-b-que.
Lets hope for good weather.

If space is limited or you just want to cover up walls, fences or unsightly buildings
then climbers and wall shrubs are the way to go for flowers foliage and fruit. There
are plants for any month of the year, and not only will they brighten up your life, but
they will insulate your house, keep it cool in the summer and merge your buildings
with the natural world. I grow lots of climbers in my own garden and here are some
of the best.
Hydrangea anomala subsp. 'Petiolaris' is one of the best, it's the climbing hydrangea,
has umbels of soft white blooms and is brilliant for a north wall. It has lovely yellow
autumn foliage and holds to the wall itself.
Pilostegia viburnoides is a wonderful self climber for a shady wall, it has rich
evergreen foliage, sprays of white blooms and new spring shoots of copper, it will
cover 2m across and 4-8m in height. Its slow to get going but gives great cover when
it does.

For somewhere sunny and for the bonus of a crop then the Japanese wineberry,
Rubus phoeniculaeus is a wonder. It has long canes covered in copper coloured spines,
it can be trained well, has decent foliage, clusters of white flowers in early summer
and sweet juicy fruit into the autumn. I have it mixed with Akebia quinata 'Cream
Form', with its scented blooms and good twining stems. The Akebia can get big, up to
10m across in fact, but it's quite slow to do so!
Clematis are of course a must and I have a few favourites, the first is C. Rehderiana,
known also as the cowslip clematis and nodding virgins bower, it has wonderful
clusters of pale yellow blooms from late summer into late autumn, it smells simply
wonderful and puts on up to 5m a season. Its easy to prune, simply cut back to
skeleton framework ( quite hard) in the spring. It really is a lovely thing. I also like
the tanguticas, the old man's beard originals. They flower late in the season, along
with the chrysanthemums and michaelmas daisies, their waxy tangerine and russet
blooms are produced in vast quantities and followed by orbiculate seed heads that
the birds will love over the winter. The easiest thing to prune, just cut back hard in
the spring.
Passiflora caerulea is ubiquitous in many gardens, but it's still a wonderful plant, it
does best on a warm wall or like I grow it, scrambling through the south fence of the
chicken run. It produces tendrils and swags it's way across the fence quite happily,
large waxy blooms of mauve, purple and cream. If we have a good summer it produces
bantam hen sized fruits that look great, it climbs forever. There are some good
varieties such as 'White Lightening', 'Amethyst' and 'Silly Cow'.
I grow a few roses too, at the cottage we have great success with Rosa 'Etoile de
hollande', large, rich, claret blooms with the most wonderful scent. Its a large rose
putting on 3m of growth a year, but nothing that good training of the stems
horizontally won't sort out, it's mixed in with Actinidia deliciosa for its foliage. I
also grow a pretty little thing called 'Pom Pom de Paris' it's one given to me by Alan
at East Ruston, small 2.5cm blooms of pale pink, but produced in such vast quantities,
it has slightly glaucous foliage and shoots tinged maroon. It will reach 2m in all
directions and flowers a good few times during the summer.
There are so many great climbers and I have only mentioned a few, but hopefully it
has tempted you to try a few more, remember to give your plants the best start
possible, remove them from their binding canes and mix up combinations, they are
sociable things. As a great plantswoman once said, 'Your plot may be small on the
ground but it goes up to the clouds above, so plant the walls and plant up to the sky'

THE SALHOUSE BROAD SCOUTS JAMBOREE,
7-9TH JUNE 1930
Elsewhere in this edition of Saga, Jackie Rose will be announcing the final plans for a
Norfolk and Suffolk Scouts Jamboree at Salhouse Broad on 17 th April 2016.
This event has an historical resonance, as it is not the first time such a Jamboree has
been held at Salhouse. Over the Whitsun weekend of 1930, a Jamboree for Norfolk and
Suffolk Scouts was held on the same site, the ‘Gorse Field’ at the top of the hill
overlooking Salhouse Broad. This event was intended to regenerate the spirit of the
great International Scout Jamboree of 1928 at Arrowe Park, Birkenhead, which at the
time was the greatest number of Scouts ever to be assembled in one place.
Guests of Honour at Salhouse were Lord Baden Powell, The Chief Scout and Founder
and Leader of the worldwide scouting movement and HRH Prince George, The Duke of
Kent; the event was jointly hosted by the Norfolk and Suffolk County Commissioners of
Scouts.
Prince George flew in his own plane from Northolt Aerodrome to Norwich, where the
aerodrome in those days was at Mousehold Heath, roughly where Heartsease estate is
now. Lord Baden Powell stayed as a guest on a yacht belonging to the Earl of
Albemarle, Norfolk County Commissioner of Scouts, anchored on Salhouse Broad.
According to a contemporary newspaper report, about 1,000 Rovers, Scouts and Cubs
attended, and there were almost 400 Rovers and Scouts in camp.
“The campers began to arrive early on Friday afternoon, and by nightfall there was a
large gathering around the natural amphitheatre which looks out across the Salhouse
Broad. The wail of the ‘Kudu Horn’ summoned them all to the arena to greet The Chief
Scout on his arrival, with a special Jamboree cry, which was “Salhousssse”, Salhousssse,
Salhousssse, Salhousssse Broad Ch-Ch-Ch-Chief”.
The Chief, who looked bright and cheery, as usual, took his place on a rustic seat
halfway up the hillside, while down below in the dip the camp fire burned up and
lighted the display platform. The items were generally of an amusing nature, and
amplifiers carried words and music to all parts of the arena.
The weather was bright and warm again on Saturday, when early in the afternoon, the
Chief Scout, with Prince George, took the salute at a march past of the Scouts, and
afterwards inspected handicraft exhibits, and chatted to the Scouts. The Chief in his
speech was full of humour and fun, as was to be expected. The late afternoon and

early evening was taken up by displays and competitions by both Norfolk and Suffolk,
and of course there was a happy camp fire gathering in the evening.

Sunday was a quiet day and in the morning there was a large attendance at the open air
celebration of Holy Communion. On the Monday, they had a busy time showing the
public what a useful and intelligent person Scouting makes of a boy. The Lord Mayor of
Norwich took the salute at the march past, and later an entertaining programme was
given by the Scouts. This was followed by the final camp fire of the Jamboree on
Monday evening.
By noon on Tuesday the meadow in which the boys had cooked, played, slept and
worked, was deserted, and left bare of all rubbish. The Norfolk County Commissioner
issued a camp order in which he thanked Mr.John Cator, of Woodbastwick, owner of the
soil, and Mr.Youngs, his tenant, for making the camp possible, to the County Director of
the Red Cross, Mrs. Harker, and to Mrs. Cator.”
Lord Robert Baden Powell (1857-1941), was a veteran of the Boer War and became
Founder and Leader of the worldwide scouting movement in 1907.
Prince George, Duke of Kent (1902-1942) was born at Sandringham, the youngest son of
King George V and hence the present Queen’s uncle. Originally an Officer in the Royal
Navy, he gained his pilot’s licence in 1929 and during WW2 he volunteered for the RAF
and was killed in a plane crash in Scotland whilst on a clandestine mission. He became
the only member of the Royal family to be killed on active service in over 500 years.

Salhouse Defibrillator
A Defibrillator is located in a yellow box on the outside wall
to the right of the front door at the Jubilee Hall. This is an
automated external defibrillator that can be used by anyone
to help save a life.
If someone has a heart attack this device will help to restore
a normal heart rhythm, and it can help save a life.
If you are in a situation that requires the use of the defibrillator you will need to
dial 999 to summon help, and the operator will give you the code that allows
you to unlock the box, so the device can be collected and used whilst medical
help is on its way. Getting this help to the patient as soon as possible is vital.
Attach the device to the chest of the patient as instructed by the device. It will
check the heart rhythm automatically, and will not allow the heart to be shocked
unless it is appropriate. Once the heart is restored then
you may need to give CPR (compressing the chest and
giving mouth to mouth resuscitation) to ensure the
patient is breathing. You will then have helped keep the
patient alive whilst help is on its way - without which the
patient may not have survived.
What if you do not feel confident about using such a device?
It is foolproof, so be rest assured about its use.
Sessions to let everyone become familiar with the defibrillator are available free.

device demonstrated, call Norwich 721474 - you will not be asked to volunteer
for anything!
Of course we hope this defibrillator will never be needed, but if it is needed you
know where it is.
