Groupers: I think the biggest news this month is the announcement that the upgraded RVHFG website has gone live, one week
ahead of schedule! If you haven’t done so already, PLEASE go to
the site (www.rvhfg.org) and take a look. Our webmaster, Nick
Ibarluzea has done a truly outstanding job of setting this site up for
us, and it deserves our attention! You can upload articles, photos,
sound files, etc to the site and they’ll be included in the library section of the site- this is a really cool way to show off the work the
club has done to promote the technical side of amateur radio, as well
as our activity side. Believe me, there’s just all kinds of stuff already
on the site- start exploring and PLEASE- add content- that’s what
this website is all about! We’ll be really touting the site at the Rochester Hamfest, to get people more familiar with the club and with our
history and presence in the VHF+ amateur bands.
Once again, let me remind you all that the Rochester Hamfest will be
held at the Barnard Firemen’s Carnival Field on Saturday, June 5th.
If you were present at last year’s ‘fest, you’ll recall how great it waswell, it promises to be even better this year! Be there, or miss a
really good time!

The May meeting of each year is our club’s elections meeting. This year is no exception. Time for
RVHFG Elections! As I mentioned in last month’s column, we have a full slate of officers nominated to
serve next year! For Chairman, Dave Hallidy K2DH has agreed to run again. For Vice-Chairman, John
Stevens WB2BYP has also agreed to serve a second term. For Secretary/Treasurer, Tom Jennings
KV2X (also our Journal Editor) has agreed to run, and for the position of Even Year Director, Bob Nezelek W2CNS has agreed to run. We welcome nominations from the floor on election night and it
would be really great if there was enough interest in the administration of the club to have more than just
one nominee for each position, so the members could actually decide (by vote) who was best qualified to
serve you, the membership. If you or someone you know wants to help serve this fine organization,
please feel free to nominate yourself or another on election night.
Our annual combined RVHFG/RDXA banquet was held on April 24th, 2010 at Nick’s SeaBreeze Inn.
Attendance was very good, with just over 50 members of both clubs (and several spouses) in attendance.
The food was great (we knew it would be, Nick’s is a great restaurant), but most of all, the time spent
chatting and catching up with friends and fellow members of both clubs was the real high point of the
afternoon. I heard many positive comments about the whole affair and everyone seemed to have a really
good time.
The next meeting of the RVHFG will be held at 7:30pm on Friday May 14th, 2010 at the Spencerport
Wesleyan Church on Rte 31 in Spencerport (see the back page of this newsletter for directions if you
haven’t been there before). Not only will we be holding elections, we’re going to try to have all those
who heard and/or worked KP4AO, the big dish at Arecibo, Puerto Rico (who were on in Arpil on 70cm
off the moon- EME) present a little bit about their experience with that. I was fortunate to work them,
and have also got recordings made with my SDR-IQ of their signal and those of several other stations
who worked or tried to work them- it makes for interesting listening. I know several other stations did
the same, and I think it promises to be an interesting evening.
PLEASE pan on attending the meeting this month- this is our most important meeting, and the club is its
members. It’s as good as YOU make it- come, tell us what you like/don’t like, and your BoD will listen
and work to make the club greater than it already is. I’m sure you’ll enjoy what we have for you this
month!

Rochester VHF Group Meeting Minutes for April 9, 2010
The general meeting, held at the Spencerport Wesleyan Church, was convened at 1945 local by the Vice Chairman, John, WB2BYP, who asked the attendees to tell the group what ham-related activities they had been involved in over the past month.
John informed the attendees about the evening’s program: Dale Clement, AF1T, and Mickie Clement, W1MKY,
had planned to present an introduction to VHF and UHF antennas but were unable to make the meeting. Instead,
they sent a DVD which they had made of their presentation.
Attendees were K2TER, WO2P, AB2YI, W2UAD, WB2GFZ, K2EHF, W2CNS, W3OAB, K2OS, WB2QCJ,
WB2BYP, N2KXS, and guest, Gloria Stevens.
OLD BUSINESS
John, WB2BYP, reminded attendees about the upcoming RVHFG/RDXA banquet which will be held on Saturday,

April 24 , starting at 1 PM, at Nick’s Seabreeze Inn.
Bill, K2TER, said that Nick Ibarluzea has finished everything on the new RVHFG web site except the “Who’s listening” section and the administrator interface. K2TER will be the web administrator. Bill briefly covered the timeth
line: by April 15 , the administrator interface will be in place, and then handed over to K2TER who will move the
th
current web page content over. The site will be moved over to the new domain by May 15 . It’s expected that
the site will be available for demonstration at the Rochester Hamfest. Part of the cost of the web site development has been paid by donations from the club members. Contributions are welcome. All donations will go to
Nick because of the large amount of work he has put into the development.
Fred, WO2P, moved that the minutes of the March 2010 meeting be accepted as printed in the Journal. Freddie,
WB2GFZ, seconded the motion which was passed by the attendees.
Frank, K2OS, moved that the March Treasurer’s report be accepted as printed in the Journal. Jeff, K2EHF, seconded the motion which was then passed by the attendees.
John, W3OAB, reminded attendees that if they can commit to attending the upcoming RVHFG/RDXA banquet,
they should inform one of the club officers at tonight’s meeting. They should also send an email to K2FX directly,
indicating that they will be attending.
NEW BUSINESS
Nominations for officers for the 2010-2011 term were submitted as follows:

He also said that he had brought in an assortment of accessories such as mixers, band pass filters and other filters that he is selling. He will negotiate a price and donate the proceeds to the RVHFG.
Fred, WO2P, moved to adjourn the meeting. The motion was seconded by Bill, K2TER and the meeting was adjourned at 2022 hours.
Program
The DVD produced by Dale Clement, AF1T, and Mickie Clement, W1MKY, an introduction to VHF and UHF antennas, was shown. It included innovative demonstrations of how propagation varies with different antenna configurations.

The Vice Report May 2010
We had an interesting experiment last month that seemed to go over pretty well. The DVD
that we showed of Dale and Mickey giving their talk “An Illuminating Introduction to Antennas”
was well received. I spoke to Dale and Mickey at the Near Fest Hamfest in Deerfield NH and
they graciously welcomed us to copy and distribute as desired.
Freddy, WB2GFZ has volunteered to copy the DVD and make the copies available to anyone
that would like to see it again, or see what they missed. See Freddy at the May meeting for a
copy. I also found my copy of their hard-copy handout from a previous talk, and so I scanned
the lot and have it available for download here:

Dale likes to hand letter stuff – probably there will not be a word-processor copy of this, so
print out and enjoy. This info is not only interesting reading for the experienced VHF/UHF operator, but makes an excellent introduction to antennas for licensing classes.
If you hear Dale AF1T or Mickey W1MKY on the air, say thanks for a job well done.
The Banquet on April 24th was great!. Excellent job by Nick’s Seabreeze Inn. Thanks to the
efforts of the RDXA in organizing the event for both clubs.
Upcoming Meetings
We have come to the end of an interesting and fun year, and although we have had to improvise a few times on the meeting topics, we have had a good mix of topics. Out into the fall, we
are rescheduling a visit from Jeff Ach W2FU, coming in to update us on advances in wireless
rotor controls and other new stuff of interest to the HF/VHF/UHF/SHF operator. Bill Rogers
K2TER is doing a marvelous job bringing his ENG van to life as the Ultimate Rover, and will
give us a presentation as well as a live demonstration. I’m planning on an update in the near
future with the progress on the 28 ft Dish at Area 26, as well as a presentation on the DS Kennedy Company. Dave K2DH is working on a presentation on the Project Diana dish that is still
up in the Ft Monmouth area.
As always, we need to know what you would like to see and hear at the Monthly meetings. We
need input here…I know some of you are doing some interesting projects. Please forward me
any of your ideas, interests, criticisms or comments to:

In a note from IRV, AF2K he writes to remind us of an informative net:

K2FX. You're invited.
Over the month the big topic has been the KP4AO appearance on 432 EME with the 1000 ft
dish at Arecibo, PR. We will have a debriefing of the activity at the May meeting with sound
clips and images from the several stations participating from the area.

if you will what it must have sounded like with the hemisphere calling you, all within about 10
KHz of spectrum, sitting in the control room at the world’s largest radio telescope.
This is part of the comments received by Joe Taylor K1JT, one of the WSJT operators at the
facility that weekend:
“These stations were found between about 432.045 and .049, where we announced we would
be listening. Many more stations were calling outside this frequency range, especially in the
range 432.050 to .060, our listening range for SSB and CW.

The scale at top is frequency in Hz above 432.000 MHz. Dark horizontal strips in the upper waterfall show the KP4AO transmissions; bright spots at about 44000 Hz after these are the
KP4AO echo. Most stations calling us are between 432.050 and 432.060, as requested. The
very strong JT65 station at 432.064 is working someone else.”

Here’s some of the comments from Dave K1WHS who operated the station:
“I tried the same thing with one of my FO432 11 el beams handheld with a bare FT817 this afternoon. This was right after getting home from the VHF Conference in Connecticut. I could
hear KP4AO very well on JT65 right out of the speaker. My XYL heard the tones 25 meters
away while she was raking leaves in the yard. I hand held the antenna. While at the conference we experimented with small yagis and a preamp. KP4AO was pretty good on a 7 el wood
boom yagi, weak on a 3 element yagi, and very weak but audible on just a dipole. The kicker
was when AF1T produced his di-pickle, which was a feed point with a small pickle on each
side that approximated a full half wave on 432. KP4AO was barely detectable on the pickle antenna. Dale, AF1T says he wants to get more gain by building a cu-pickle quad! This may be
the first reception of eme with VBD (Vinegar Based Dipole) technology! We actually erected a
small eme station for KP4AO that ran off emergency power and was situated in the back of the
rear parking lot at the hotel. It attracted much interest and we had great copy on SSB and CW
with the KP4AO running an amplifier. They were sort of weak on SSB when running just 20
watts. We did manage to work them with the VHF club call, W1RJA. The wx was poor, cold

Hilltoppers Net. This will be an informal FM simplex net held on 146.450 MHz. We will meet
at 8:30 AM Saturdays from May 1st until mid-September. Check-ins are made with your call

June VHF QSO Party it is open to anyone and everyone.
1. Object: To work as many amateur stations in as many different grid squares as possible using FM simples on 146, 223 and 440 MHz.
2. Date and Contest Period: (June 12-14 2010) 3-4 PM and 7-8 PM (local time both
days)
3. Entry Category:

4. Exchange: Call sign and Grid-square locator
5. Scoring:
5.1. QSO points:
5.1.1. Count one point for each complete 146 FM MHZ QSO.
5.1.2. Count two points for each 223 or 440 FM MHZ QSO. Suggested operating frequencies: 2 Meters 146.55, 1 ¼ Meters 223.500, 70CM 446.000
5.2. Multiplier: The total number of different grid squares worked per bands. Each grid
square counts as one multiplier on each band it is worked.
5.3. Final score: Multiply the total number of QSO points from all the bands operated by
the total number of multipliers for final score.

Our RVHFG Monday Night Net and the Thursday Night Nets continue to be well attended.
Check in and say hello! Almost everyone is horizontally polarized but check in regardless and
see how your gear is working. It is a great opportunity to see “who is doing what to whom and
with which”.
We always go to 50.200 USB at 2130 local and there the check-ins have been equally good,
with among others, Carl WA2GAI, Bob W2CNS, Steve VE3TFU, Dave K2DH, Al K2MPE, Ken
W2UAD, Len KC2PCD, Al K2ERG, Stan VA3ST, Ron KE2LW and Mike WB2SQS. If there is

you make it!

Field Day 2010

Groupers your help is needed for the RDXA Field Day effort this year. RDXA wants to have
the top score in 3A class (most competitive class). They were on top in 2008 but lost out last
year by a few hundred points.
If you can help out at the Field Day site, by all means volunteer. Another way you can help is
by working W2RDX on HF, VHF and above either mobile or at your home station. The K2TER
Rover will be supplying the VHF and above station and will be active with cw/ssb/fm on all the
bands from 6m up to 1296 MHz. As a way of maximizing points we would like to work everybody both cw and phone (that’s 3 points per band!). Rusty cw ops are the most wanted!

4 Meter Band Beacon in US Now On the Air

In the past year or so there has been an increase in the number of European and African countries granting their hams access to the 4-meter (70.000 MHz to 70.500 MHz) band.
As a result, at least one petition to the FCC (Glen E. Zook, K9STH) requesting US hams ac-
cess to this band has been filed. As of 6 May 2010 Glen has not received any response from
the FCC.
Starting on May 3, 2010 Brian Justin WA1ZMS made a 70 MHz beacon operational
from Bedford, Virginia, atop Apple Orchard Mountain (4200 feet asl), in FM07fm. The beacon
is running 3kw erp operating on 70.005 MHz 24 hours a day and is beaming towards Europe
and using the experimental call WE9XFT. The beacon will continue to operate until September 1, when the experimental license expires.
In his application to the FCC, Brian states that: There is a gap in the mid-VHF region of
70MHz where there are no current high-powered sources of narrowband RF signals that can
be detected via weak signal methods to indicate Es since the recent transition from analog to
digital TV took place. In the past, the AM video carriers could be used by radio operators monitoring the 70MHz region both domestic and abroad to give indication that Es propagation was
taking place in that frequency region.
He goes on to propose ”a source of CW, medium power level, reliable, signal acting as
a radio propagation beacon at 70.005 MHz for domestic as well as possible Trans-Atlantic reception. With recent changes to EU radio allocations, more amateurs are actively utilizing the
70MHz spectrum. As such, the likelihood of detection of Es propagation in the EU and North
America on that band has increased.” Brian chose the period of operation from May to September because it includes the peak of the annual Es skip occurrence.”
Since the proposed beacon frequency of 70.005 MHz falls inside the TV Chan 4 frequency allocation, Brian had to determine if the beacon would cause interference to any TV
broadcasts. He found two translators located about 45 to 50 km from the beacon site. One was
on the air and the other not currently in use. It was determined that there would be no interference by the engineer at the active translator. There was also concern that the beacon’s 3rd
harmonic falling inside TV Chan 13 would cause interference. Again the engineer at that station indicated that he expected little or no adverse effects from the beacon to the reception of
the Chan 13 signal.
Keep in mind that the intent of the beacon is to use 70MHz for radio propagation experimentation while the FCC is deciding how to use this “White space”. The beacon is not intended to justify an allocation of a 70 MHz Ham Band in the US.

It is with great sadness that I need to part with some of my VHF/UHF/Microwave gear.
With my imminent move to AZ, it has come to my attention that contesting in this arena is not
an alternative from the new home front. As majestic as my view is, there are tall mountains in
every direction. Rover activity is limited to summers only. I could really use some help in getting these parts to someone who will put them to good use. Price is very negotiable, all offers
will be considered.
I have for sale a complete setup for 220, 902 and 1296 comprised of transverter, hard
line and antennas. I would prefer to sell someone an new band. Please respond via email, I
