Central, there 1st loss on the season.

and Taylor Leinhart share the honor. They have
led the Lake Central Indians Baseball Team to
a No. 1 Ranking in 4A, No. 1 in the Midwest,
and to a 9-0 start and 2-0 in the Duneland Athletic Conference. McNamara threw a Perfect
Game vs Lowell and Taylor Leinhart beat previously undefeated Crown Point. LC also swept
all of the Wooden Bat Challenge Games for
Head Coach Jeff Sandor.

Season Preview

It’s take two for the Gary SouthShore RailCats in
several ways this season. The first of these occurred at
the end of last season when Kevin Spudic was hired as
the President and General Manager. The Highland native and Valparaiso University graduate was the assistant GM from 2002 to 2005.
Take two also in the American Association. Last
year was the first year in the AA for the ‘Cats who
spent the first 9 years of their existence in the Northern
League. Last year, the RailCats battled to a 54-46 record in the AA Central, and just barely missed the playoffs for the first time since 2004.
Spudic and Manager Greg Tagert have designs this
year on an AA championship this year and have made
some moves to help with the on product on the field.

INF Chris Carrara who batted .295 and
saw time at all four infield positions last season was one of the first signings this offseason. Rico Washington (.313/12 HR/83 RBI)
and Brian Kolb (.280) return as well.
Infield mainstay Mike Rohde returns
for his fifth season as a RailCat. Rohde, who
is a former rookie of the year with the RailCats, hit .290 last year to go along with 6
round trippers and 63 RBI. Also expected to
see time in the infiled are newcomer, lefty
David Cooper and switch-hitter Kyle Haines.

The first move was to resign RHP Nolan
Richardson who pitched in 25 games last
season and started 16. The same day, it was
announced that RHP Chris Allen was acquired ads the “player to be named later” in
the earlier Andy Weeks trade. Allen was 4-2
with a 1.42 ERA in 30 relief appearances for
Lake Erie last season.
The RailCats made a splash by adding
former Cubs draft pick Bear Bay who spent
last season with the Los Angeles Angels
AAA affiliate Salt Lake Bees where we stuck
out 95 batters, while walking only 50 over
159 innings. Another AAA pitcher added to
the roster is 4 time minor league all-star Andrew Johnston, who spent the last seven season in the Rockies organization. LHP T.J.
Wohlever also returns to the team and RHP
Scott Kelley was added to the roster. In addition, RHP Mike Perconte, who also played in
the Astros and Rangers organizations for
their AA affiliates last year. They also
brought back pitcher Will Krout (5-2, 1.85
ERA),
RHP Phillip Bartleski, RHP Morgan
Coombs, RHP Derek Johnson, RHP Andrew
Johnston, RHP Chad Rhoades, and LHP Carlos Rivas complete the pitching staff.
Catchers
Ryan Babineu will split time with
Craig Maddox (.321/22 RBI) behind the dish
this season. Babineau was signed out of the
Diamondbacks system. The team also signed
Jordan Comadena, a former Purdue Boilermaker who has played in the Astros organization. Dan Pellegrino rounds out the catchers for the RailCats leading into the season.

well under his tutelage though, missing that
playoff berth by a single game. Amazingly,
Target has finished every season in his carrer
with a record above .500 and he will enter

16 year career. Of course, his focus will be
on the team bringing home another championship, and his trademark development of
players rather than personal honors.
Outlook
The RailCats will compete not only
with American Association teams this season but will play a few interleague games
against Can-Am League Opponents as
well, giving the team a chance to play some
new teams this year. The matchups will pit
the team against former manager Joe Calfapietra, who manages the New Jersey
Jackals.
The novelty of interleague baseball
aside, the RailCats addressed perhaps their
biggest need from last season by building a
stronger pitching staff. Pitching will be key
this year as the team will be expected to
make the playoffs this year after a one season hiatus.
The addition, or re-addition of some
high quality offense in James and Coles
will help to make the loss of some of the
offensive power lost from 2011. These new
additions, along with the solid core that returns to the lineup should provide opportunities to win every outing and improve
upon a successful, albeit playoff-free, 2011.

here in the Calumet Region. Spike Albrecht
is one of the hardest working players ever to
come out of the region. In that, he gets every
ounce of the ability he has into his game.

worked with them. Prep School or not, these
guys are Region Stars! Hopefully more will
matriculate to Valpo, IU, Purdue, Notre
Dame, Ball State, Butler, and Indiana State in
the future. But for now we can still cheer
them on as the Region Trio! As we cheered
on Etwaun Moore and Robbie Hummel at
Purdue.

Midseason Report

The high school softball season is well underway in
Northwest Indiana with several teams emerging as the
area’s best early in the year. Lake Central is believed to
be the top team in the Region, holding a number two
state ranking in Class 4A in the most recent Indiana
Coaches of Girls Sports Association poll.

Julia Druzbicki has been a pleasant
surprise for LC early on, hitting .520
through the first month of the season.
Morgan Franovich has anchored the pitching staff with a 1.31 earned run average.
The number three and four hitters in the
order have gotten the job done as Kaitlyn
Ranieri and Nikki Adams each have 11
runs batted in.
The Indians, who currently stand at
11-2, are the top team in the area according to the Northwest Indiana Times, PostTribune and Regionsports.com. Lake
Central’s only conference loss came in
upset fashion on April 18 in Portage,
when the Red Indians prevailed 5-2 behind a strong pitching performance from
freshman Kylie Jones.

Portage, which does not have any
seniors on its roster, has been up-anddown throughout the year. First year head
coach Lisa Hayes’s club stands at 8-5, 4-3
in the DAC. The Indians sandwiched their
upset of LC in between two losses, 7-0 to
Crown Point and 5-1 to Chesterton. Juniors Haley Hodges and Lauren Murray
have provided thump in the middle of the
order.
Elsewhere in the DAC, Crown Point,
LaPorte and Chesterton are also off to
strong starts. The Bulldogs finished second in their own tournament on April 21 to
move their record to 10-2. Siena Gyure
has anchored the pitching rotation, tossing
a no-hitter against Hanover Central in a CP

Tournament game. Allison Rock of
Crown Point is hitting a robust .563. The
Chesterton Trojans stand at 8-6 with junior Megan Tymorek pulling double duty,
leading the offense with a .500 batting average and the pitching staff with 66 strikeouts. The Slicers are 10-2 and have
played very well since falling to Lake
Central 7-0 on April 5. Hannah Fuller (41) and Megan Bunch (4-0) have successfully shared pitching duties.
Andrean has a one game lead on the
rest of the field with half of the Northwest
Crossroad Conference slate complete.
The 59ers have been ranked second to
Lake Central by most local publications
throughout the season. The 59ers
knocked off Crown Point in the April 20
tournament 2-0 in the championship game
to improve to 10-1 on the year. The lone
loss came in an NCC upset to Kankakee
Valley 2-1 despite a complete game threehitter from Nicole Steinbach. Steinbach
has put the team on her back this year,
with a 9-1 record.

NCC double round robin, Andrean has a
one game edge over Munster and
Kankakee Valley. Griffith and Lowell are
still hanging around at 3-2. The defending conference champion KV Kougars,
who have losses to Highland and Lowell
this season, host Andrean in a rematch on
May 1.
The best of the rest in local high
school softball this season includes Hanover Central (7-8), Morton (7-1), Bishop
Noll (7-4), Hebron (8-3) and Lake Station
(7-4).
Since the weather has cooperated,
most local teams are already over half
way through their regular season schedules. Postseason play is right around the
corner and teams are trying to hit their
stride by the time sectionals get underway.
The IHSAA softball sectional draw will
take place at 7am Central Time on Thursday May 10.

with seven different sectionals involving
local teams. Highland will be the site of
4A Sectional 1, which includes EC Central, West Side, Morton, Lowell, Munster,
favorite Lake Central and the host Trojans. Sectional 2, which will take place in
Chesterton, is very much up for grabs
with Crown Point, Hobart, LaPorte, Merrillville, Michigan City, Portage, Valparaiso and Chesterton making up the field.
In 3A, Gavit will host Sectional 17
with Roosevelt, Wallace, Griffith,
Hammond High, Clark and the Gladiators
all taking part. The other local 3A sectional will be one many people have an
eye on in Kankakee Valley as the host
Kougars battle it out with Andrean, Calumet, Hanover Central, Knox and Rensselaer Central.

Kouts, LaCrosse, Morgan Township
and Washington Township make up a four
-team 1A sectional in LaCrosse, the only
one involving local squads.
There are many storylines to keep
an eye on as the regular season enters its
second half with the postseason run on the
horizon. The biggest question left to be
answered is which teams will be left
standing the second weekend in June
when the state finals are held at Ben
Davis High School. The state finals,
which take place on June 9, are scheduled
to be broadcast on Mid America Broadcasting.

Record Setting Hoosiers!

Everyone remembers that Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points in a game or
that Ted Williams is the last hitter to hit over .400. But did you know that former
Plymouth HS Star Scott Skiles has the record for the most Assists in a NBA game
and not John Stockton, Magic Johnson, or Kevin Johnson. On December 30, 1990
in a 155-116 Orlando Magic victory over the Denver Nuggets, Scott Skiles had 22
points and count ‘em 30 assists in the game. Skiles would go on to Coach in the
NBA and is now with the Milwaukee Bucks. Skiles broke the previous record set
by the New Jersey Nets Point Guard Kevin Porter of 29 in 1978.

Crown Point Pitcher Dan Plesac was the AllTime leader in Appearances at one point.
And East Chicago Washington’s two Major
Leaguers - Pitcher Tim Stoddard and OF
Kenny Lofton are the only two athletes to
win NCAA Basketball Championships and
World Series Crowns. Lofton competed in
Basketball at Arizona and Stoddard played at
NC State with Monte Towe and David
Thompson. Ironically both Stoddard and
Lofton played in the IHSAA Basketball State
Finals as well, with Stoddard winning a State
Title, with the Legendary 1971 East Chicago
Washington team that featured Ulysses
“Junior” Bridgeman, Pete Trgovich, Darnell
Adell, and Ruben Bailey. Pete Trgovich was
on the UCLA team with the Long 88 Game
Winning Streak that was broken by the Notre
Sapper’s Market and Greenhouses

Coach John Wooden.
Wooden has won more NCAA
titles than any coach in NCAA History and he played in HS at Martinsville and was once the Head Coach
at South Bend Central, Indiana State,
and he played at Purdue. Ironically
Pete Trgovich would win a State Title as Coach at EC Central and
MAB’s Hank Kilander was a member of that
staff, and got a ring. Ulysses “Junior”
Bridgeman would go on to win the 6th man
of the Year in the NBA with the Milwaukee
Bucks.
Some more records include Michigan
City’s Don Larsen of the New York Yankees
- pitched the only Perfect Game in World
Series History. And Former Indiana Prep
Stars Kent Benson, Rich Valavicius, John
Laskowski, and Bobby Wilkerson were all
part of the last 32-0 perfect season in 1976
for Bobby Knight and Indiana University. as
they defeated Michigan 86-68.
Terre Haute’s and Indiana RB Anthony
Thompson set a NCAA record at the time in
1989 of rushing for 377 yards on 52 carries
against Wisconsin, he also had most points
scored for a career at that time in 394 and
most TD’s 64.
Records are great but here are some
notable accomplishments to go along with
the Record Book. Jeff Gordon of Tri West is
a record setting winner of NASCAR Races.
New Castle’s Steve Alford won an NCAA
Title and an Olympic Medal. Merrillville
Prep Star Greg Popovich has won several

is in the Baseball Hall of Fame and is Northwest Indiana’s only Hall of Famer.

An Evening With Bobby Knight
By Rich Sapper, MAB Monthly Staff Writer
Shortly after Christmas this past year, I
got a call from my sister. Honestly, I can’t
remember what she wanted, it didn’t even
matter with what happened after she asked
what she wanted and the said “Billy wants to
talk to you.” She was referring to my brother
-in-law Bil Mack. What I heard next, well, it
wasn’t life changing, but it set up an interesting evening several months later. “Bob
Knight is coming to the Star, you wanna
go?” Well, obviously, having some IU ties
having earned my bachelors degree from
there and having been a huge fan of IU basketball and Coach Knight in general, I
jumped at it.
Fast forward to April 5th. The call culminated in a trip to see Coach Knight in
Merrillville. Neither of us knew what to expect exactly. We knew that he would talk
about basketball, and his career, but beyond
that we had no real idea of what to expect.
The actual experience was better than what
we expected.
Coch Knight opened with a story
about him playing high school football and a
muffed punt that lead to his first “coaching
decision” when I the next play on defense,
he switched sides with the other defensive
end so that he would not have to hear about
the mistake from his coach.
He went on to recall his time playing
basketball at Ohio State for the 1960 National Champion Buckeyes that featured
Jerry Lucas and John Havlicek along with

other future pro players Mel Norwell, Joe
Roberts, and Larry Siegfried. He talked
about the lessons that he learned from his
Hall-of-Fame coach Fred Taylor, and the influence that it had on him. He also discussed
how he knew that he wanted to be a coach,
but didn't know anything about coaching.
He then went on to his short time as an
assistant coach at Cuyahoga Falls High
School in Ohio, and his experiences as a JV
coach and advance scout for the varsity team.
Knight talked about a lesson learned from
the very successful varsity coach at the
school. His team was set to play another JV
squad that was undefeated. He went to his
head coach with an idea about a defense to
defeat the team. His uncompromising head
coach said “if you are going to be a successful coach, you will learn to win with
our defense.” The defense was kept in
place, and Knight’s team won.
The fateful trip that lead to Knight’s
college coaching career was also related. As

he recalled, he took a trip to the National
Championship game where he was talking
with coaches about potential grad schools
and the opportunity to coach as a grad assistant, preferably in California. Coach Taylor
offered him the opportunity to come back to
Ohio State, but Knight respectfully declined,
citing his desire to go somewhere new. As
the story went on, he talked about how the
coach from West Point would allow him to
coach the freshman team (in those days, college freshmen were not allowed to play on
the “varsity” team). He decided that he
would, which also meant that he needed to
join the Army.
Knight paused to honor all of the men
and women in the audience who had served
in the military and then went on to talk about
his own military experience. As he remised,
he called himself the “least prepared solider
ever in the US Army.” He said that came
mostly from his playing on his basic training
units baseball and fast pitch softball teams .
He then spent a large part of the evening talking about his time at Army and
some of the interesting events not only on the
court, but surrounding the team as his time

there corresponded to the countries involvement in Vietnam. One particularly interesting
story involved a game at Syracuse University. Syracuse students had protested the
ROTC on campus the previous Thursday,
and Army was playing at Syracuse that Saturday. When his team got
there, students from the University started to take screws
and bolts out of the bleachers
and throwing them at the players from West Point. Knight
took his team off of the court
and told the officials at the
scorers table that if anything
else was thrown at his players,
they would leave and it would
leave an bad mark on the university. When
they returned nothing else was thrown, but
some of the students were shouting at the
players. One of the, a particularly “tough
kid” was walking slowly to the bench and
made sure that the Syracuse students knew
that he meant business if they continued. The

colonel that traveled with the team held on to
the player, and said, if he was starting a riot
that he would have to take the colonel with
him!
Of course he talked about his time at
Indiana and the great support that he always
had from Hoosiers fans while he
was the head coach in Bloomington and after he left. Of course no
recounting of his time in Bloomington would be complete without talking about his perspective
of Keith Smart's buzzer beating
shot to win the 1987 NCAA
Championship over Syracuse,
While fans will remember the
shot, he talked about the sequence that lead to it.
He recalled that his plan was to have
someone foul Derrick Coleman. Instead,
Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim decided to
have Coleman inbound to Rony Seikaly instead. When that happened, his team sprang
into action, double teaming Seikaly and

forcing him to pass it back to Coleman.
Smart, seeing the sequence, was able to
come up and foul Coleman.
The rest of the story is forever ingrained in the annuals of NCAA tournament
history, as the ball was passed in the post to
senior captain Daryl Thomas, who was
flanked on either side by Seikaly and Coleman. Thomas faked the shot, and kicked it
out to Smart who was open for the shot.
Knight credited the foul that Smart committed, more-so than the shot, as the reason that
the Hoosiers won the title.
The basketball stories were interspersed with his recalling of the early years,
his parents, and his friendship with Bill Parcells that started while they were both coaching at West Point. He also talked about his
uncompromising nature, his relationships
with officials, and his experiences coaching
current Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski
at West Point. He also talked about the fun he
is having working with ESPN as a college
basketball analyst, and in particular the fun
he had at the expense of Kentucky fans this
past season.

was not a fan of the three pointer in basketball, the “one and done” players in college,
and the heavy amount of pressure put on kids
throughout the recruiting process, He said
that the spotlight put on 17 and 18 year olds
as they make their decisions about where to
play as “unfair.”
In all, it was classic Coach Knight.
Honesty, humor and great stories from one of
the best to ever coach the game.

Gary Roosevelt Sports: A Proud Tradition
MAB Monthly Staff Report
On the heals of what
could be the last sports season for Roosevelt High
School in Gary, all kinds of
memories come back to the
tremendous sports history of
the school. From Glenn
Robinson, Dick Barnett,
and Winston Garland in
basketball to Wallace
Johnson, Lloyd
McClendon, and Joe
Gates in baseball to George
Taliaferro and Gerald Irons
in football there is a tremendous sports lineage at the
school on 25th is long and
prestigious.
Despite the notoriety
of the graduates who went
on to the professional ranks,
perhaps it is the track program, particualry in the 70s
and 80s that leaves the most
lasting legacy. John Campbell’s track program won
it’s first state championship
in the 69-70 school year.
While it was not the first for
Roosevelt, it was the first of
two back-to-back championships for Campbell and
the Panthers. They wouldn’t
win another until 76-77 and
then they won every state
championship on the boys
side from 80-81 through
88-89. The final title was
Campbell’s 12th as a head
coach and Roosevelt’s
20th over all as a school.
The 20 boys track titles are far and away the
most in the state. The second most belongs to the
now defunct Froebel High
School, also out of Gary
with 14. The next closest is
Kokomo with 9.
Of course it’s been
awhile, but it is hard not to
reflect back on those successes. Here’s to hoping athletics continue at Roosevelt
and future success are possible.
