*A-E and COMPARABLE INDEX: The lifetime Average-Earnings Index indicates how much purse money the progeny of one sire has earned, on the average, in relation to the
average earnings of all runners in the same years; average earnings of all runners in any year is represented by an index of 1.00. The Comparable Index indicates the average
earnings of progeny produced from mares bred to one sire, when these same mares were bred to other sires. Only 32% of all sires have a lifetime AEI higher than their mares

Started by Richard Golden, Dr. and
Mrs. Tom Bowman, and Allaire DuPont,
Northview took its name from its location
as a 116-acre parcel at the northern end of
the famed Windfields Farm near Chesapeake City. Windfields had been the home
of many top stallions in its day including
the legendary Northern Dancer, who at
one time commanded a stud fee of $1 million prior to his death in 1990. Northern
Dancer, the most influential stallion of the
latter part of the 20th century, sired 147
stakes winners from 635 foals (23%), and
his pedigree can be found in nearly every
stakes winner today.
Northview’s initial roster included local
standouts such as Smarten, Waquoit, and
Two Punch and has since grown to include
Maryland’s perennial leading sire Not For
Love (out of a Northern Dancer mare) and
six other stallions.

Station Maryland division is vital to the
breeding community,” said Cricket Goodall, executive director of the Maryland
Horse Breeders Association. “Mr. Golden
has worked hard to evaluate the needs of
the region and continues to show that the
right stallions at the right price will attract mares.”
Maryland now has purses funded from
video lottery terminals in the state but
has been late to the party in the Midlantic region with stiff competition from the
surrounding states of Pennsylvania, West
Virginia, and Delaware.
In fiscal 2010-11, Pennsylvania’s 10 casinos generated $274.9 million for the state’s
Race Horse Development Fund, hence
Northview’s foray into the Keystone State.
The new Pennsylvania division has re-
ceived an influx of talented stallions in the
form of Jump Start, E Dubai, and Smarty
Jones from Ghost Ridge Farm, and will
offer four other top-flight stallions for the
2012 breeding season.
Time to Move
According to The Jockey Club, 198 stallions covered 2,782 mares in Maryland in
1991. By 2005 the number of stallions had

dropped to 78 and 1,728 mares were covered. In 2010 the number
of stallions in the Free State had dwindled to 34 and the mares
covered slid to 575.
“It became very evident to Northview quite a few years ago
that Maryland racing was dragging its feet regarding the competition that was surrounding them,” Golden said of the decision to
develop a farm near Peach Bottom, Pa. “We really had no choice
regarding our move. It was either make the move or leave our future in the hands of the chaos that was going on, and is still going
on in Maryland.”
The two farms are approximately 45 minutes apart.
“The property that Northview chose in Pennsylvania is just
what we wanted,” Golden said of the land purchased in 2007. “I
love property with nothing on it but fertile land. This gives you
an opportunity to build your farm exactly the way you want it to
look, and that’s exactly what we did.”
The investment in the new farm as well as updates on the original property in Maryland has been extensive. At the Pennsylvania
division there are now three 20-stall broodmare barns and a 12stall barn for boarders. The eight-stall stallion barn was designed
by Maryland division farm manager Louis Merryman.
The farm in Pennsylvania handles 125-150 mares in the breeding season and has anywhere from 40-60 year-round boarders.

Comparable Index.
At the Maryland farm, miles of fencing
have been replaced. The breeding shed has
been resurfaced and brought up to date.
In August, Northview brought in Carl
McEntee as director of bloodstock services. He joined Northview after serving
as general manager of Ghost Ridge, where
he was instrumental in putting together a
star-packed roster.
McEntee, born and raised in Ireland,
is a graduate of the British National Stud
program and has been in the United States
since 2003 after working for Darley. He
was farm manager at David Hager’s Idle
Hour Farm and at Paragon Farm in Kentucky before heading to Ghost Ridge.
The move from Ghost Ridge came about
when that farm’s owner, Terry Bratton,
decided to take his operation in another
direction and concentrate on his broodmare band. The stallions and McEntee
hit the road with Northview purchasing a
majority interest in Jump Start and well as
buying the stallion Silver Train from HnR
Racing.
“Northview is the model for what the
Pennsylvania legislature had in mind
when slots were introduced to reinvigorate
Thoroughbred racing,” said Jeb Hannum,
executive secretary of the Pennsylvania
Horse Breeders Association. “Northview
has purchased open space, invested in
buildings and materials, employed local
residents, and, most importantly, improved racing in Pennsylvania.”
Up Ahead
The future in the Keystone State certainly appears robust, and Northview is in a
strong position for today and the future.
“Five years from today, as the right
stallions emerge in Pennsylvania, I think

the stallion bonus numbers will speak
for themselves,” Golden said. “Also, the
breeders who are taking advantage of the
PHBA’s programs will be in a much better
financial position than they have been. All
of this will lead to a healthier Thoroughbred industry in Pennsylvania.”
The addition of slots at Aqueduct in New
York has grabbed the attention of horsemen, but the competition is seen as a positive in the Midlantic region.
“Those purses will only help Maryland
and Pennsylvania,” Golden said. “The
more money that is routed into any industry will always benefit others in that industry as well.
“New York will always be the standard
for other states to follow. I believe that
our owners and breeders in Maryland
and Pennsylvania would be content with
a consistently growing state program of
their own and they would support that
program. More state-bred and state-sired
races like they have in New York would
make owners, breeders, and trainers in
Pennsylvania and Maryland very happy.”
Northview has a hammerlock on the
Pennsylvania sire leaders list with their
“big three” from Ghost Ridge leading the
parade: Jump Start, E Dubai, and Smarty
Jones.
Jump Start, bred and raced by the late
William T. Young, began his stud career
at Young’s Overbrook Farm in Kentucky
in 2003 after a shortened, one-year racing
season in which he won the Saratoga Special Stakes (gr. II). The son of A.P. Indy was
moved to Pennsylvania and Ghost Ridge
for the 2009 season. This year has been
his best by far, as he ranks in the top 40

nationally and has six stakes winners in
2011 including a pair of top sophomores:
three-time Derby winner Prayer for Relief
(Ohio, Iowa, and Super) and Pants On Fire,
winner of the Louisiana Derby (gr. II).
E Dubai, who began his career at Darley in 2003 and shuttled to Darley Australia for three seasons, was Pennsylvania’s
leading sire of 2010 with just under $4 million in progeny earnings. The son of Mr.
Prospector has eight stakes winners so far
this year.
Third on the 2011 list is the Keystone
State’s own Smarty Jones, the darling of
the 2004 Triple Crown series where he
came just shy of winning the Triple Crown
with his heart-breaking loss to Birdstone in
the Belmont Stakes (gr. I). Retired to stud
to Kentucky’s Three Chimneys Farm, he
moved to Ghost Ridge for the 2011 season
and has now settled in at Northview.
Perhaps unable to deliver up to the hype
early on, Smarty Jones’ stud career is quietly adding depth. He has three stakes
winners on the year including Sunrise
Smarty, winner of the Fall Highweight
Handicap (gr. III) on Thanksgiving Day at
Aqueduct.
“I think it’s difficult to live up to your expectations when your expectations are so
high,” McEntee said of Smarty’s first few
crops of runners. “Now he is consistently
throwing top-level allowance winners and
some graded stakes winners.”
The fee for Smarty Jones dips to $7,500
for 2012 from $10,000 last year.
“He’s priced reasonably, and he’ll give
breeders in the Midlantic area a good opportunity to get to a very good horse,”
McEntee said.
Other stallions at Northview Pennsylvania are Fairbanks, a grade II-winning
son of Giant’s Causeway who was a FasigTipton Saratoga yearling sale-topper at
