The Salem Chamber officially kicked off their 2014 “Dog Days of
Summer” Membership Campaign during the latter part of August. The
last organized membership campaign was held in 2004 and was very
successful. Letters were recently sent out to potential new members
with information on the benefits of becoming a Chamber member,
along with a one-time discounted membership investment offer. The
members of the Membership Committee met to review the plans for
visits. Each perspective new member received a goody bag with information on the Salem Chamber that included a flyer that describes
Chamber benefits; (see insert), as well as a member testimonial flyer, a
dog paw sugar cookie, and a small stuffed dog with a postcard stating,
“It’s the ‘Dog Days of Summer’ and we ‘Paws’ to say, ‘Doggone It!’ It’s
Time to Join the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce!” The two participating members that brought in the first new members received a gift
card from Giant Eagle. Hats off to our two winners: Attorney Shawna
L’Italien who brought in the first new member, and Attorney Geoff
Goll, (not far behind Shawna) who brought in our second new member. The campaign will run through the end of the month of September.
Did you know, that one of the best ways to bring new members to
our organization is simply by asking? Tell your business peers why
you and your company (or organization) belong, and why it is simply
good business to be a Salem Chamber member! Remember we keep
“Pace” with our membership as we Promote, Advocate, Connect, and
Educate for the greater good of the business community in Salem and
the surrounding area. Many thanks to our very enthusiastic Membership Committee and the group of volunteers that was made up of our
Board of Directors and Chamber Ambassadors. Kudos to Chairman &

COUNCIL UPDATE
September’s Salem Area Safety

Solution to Conflict Management?” The cost of the
luncheon is $14.00 per person. Reservations are required and can be made by contacting the Chamber
office no later than Tuesday, September 16th. DID

YOU at the next meeting!
BIG CHANGES IN GROUP-RATING
This year there are big changes in group-rating.
Groups now have to be filed by Monday, November
24, 2014. You no longer have until the end of February
to made a decision.
Prospective Billing becomes effective July 1, 2015
for private employers and January 1, 2016 for public employers. This means that employers will be
required to pay workers’ comp premiums before
receiving coverage from BWC. This will be similar
to your insurance premiums you pay before you
receive coverage.
BWC will provide an eight month premium credit to
Ohio employers for the first Prospective Billing
year, meaning that Ohio employers will only be required to pay four months of premiums in 2015.
Ohio employers will receive a 2 percent reduction
in base rates for private employer and a 4 percent
reduction for public employer in 2015.
The deadline for filing group-retrospective rating
applications, individual retro, and the deductible
Program and One Claim Program applications is
now the last business day of January, 2015.
Employer’s evidence for denying a claim should include a company accident report and investigation,
witness statements, defense medical exam (IME),
drug test results, medical history information,
safety disciplinary reports, company safety policies
and witness testimony at the hearings. The cost of
the investigation is much less than the claims cost.
It pays to compare. All companies should annually review their group rating eligibility. For a free, no obligation evaluation of your company’s eligibility to participate in the group rating program, simply contact,
Benefit Management Service of Ohio @ 330-8569213 or Careworks Consultants @ 1-800-837-3200.

DOLIV PUBLISHING ANNOUNCES
BOOK RELEASE OF
WISDOM FROM THE WOODS, SEASONS
Salem Chamber Member DoLiv Publishing is excited to announce a new book release by local author Sheila Bachmeier.
Life lessons presented through the voice
of nature have a profound impact when
we listen with the heart. Wisdom from the Woods, Seasons—the first in Bachmeier’s series of Tree Wisdom
Books, explores the magic and splendor of what life
offers if we just take the time to receive these gifts.
The book is a beautifully handcrafted tale, with fullcolor illustrations by award-winning, local Salem artist, Kristina Danklef of Sourballpython Studios. This is
a message both adults and children will cherish reading over and over again. Wisdom from the Woods, Seasons can be purchased during Family Fall Fun Day on
September 13th, where Sheila will be available for
book signings.
On October 9th both the author and the illustrator
will be doing a book signing together at the Look Nook
Gift Shop at the Salem Regional Medical Center from
10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. And, purchases can also be
made online @ www.dolivpublishing.com, and Quaker
Corner Flowers, or stop by DoLiv’s office located at
328 East State Street, Salem from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Bachmeier also heads up her own company, DoLiv
Publishing LLC, an artisan publishing house that operates independently and also collaborates with other
publishers, most recently North Atlantic Books, Berkeley, California. DoLiv works with writers interested in
the self-publishing process, including proofing, editing,
layout and design, print, and marketing.
