Mansur-Wentworth joined the Roadrunner staff in 2013 as the Director of Track and Field, adding cross country responsibilities in the summer of 2013. The veteran coach replaced longtime CSUB Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Alan Collatz, who retired after 30 years with the Roadrunners in 2012. In Mansur-Wentworth’s first three seasons at CSUB, the ‘Runners have made impressive strides both in competition and in the classroom. Since she joined the staff, the track and field and cross country teams have earned 54 Academic AllConference honors. In competition, the Roadrunner throwers have continued to excel. The 2014 season saw Bryan Wilmert become CSU Bakersfield’s first ever WAC Champion when he claimed the men’s hammer throw title. Wilmert went on to place 28th at the NCAA West Regional Qualifier in the event in a season which saw him move up to seventh all-time on CSUB’s Top 20 list. Wilmert went on to repeat as WAC hammer throw champion in 2015 while Karnell Grimes won a WAC title in the men’s javelin. Both Grimes and Wilmert represented CSUB at the NCAA Division I Regional Championships and both also left the program with Top 10 all-time performances in their respective events. Mansur-Wentworth has added a total of 24 AllConference honorees between indoor and outdoor track and field teams since coming to Bakersfield. Her 2014 relay teams proved to be outstanding as the women’s 4 x 100m team recorded the fastest CSUB time since 1982 and the 4 x 400m team was the fastest since 1996 with the 10th best CSUB mark all-time. The men’s 4 x 400m squad posted the fastest CSUB mark in over eight years as well. 3 In 2013, Thomas Judge repeated as Great West Conference champion in the hammer throw and qualified for the NCAA Division I Regional Championships in the event. Seven Roadrunners were awarded with All-GWC honors while Bakersfield earned 11 Academic All-GWC honors. Mansur-Wentworth brings a wealth of experience to the program as she guided the University of Central Florida (UCF) to 10 Atlantic Sun Conference (ASC) Championships before the Knights moved to the Conference USA. She won 10 ASC Coach of the Year awards during her 12-year tenure with the Knights. During that time, she also coached six conference athletes of the year, 50 individual conference champions and saw her studentathletes win 194 all-conference honors before stepping down in 2007. Mansur-Wentworth, who grew up in Colts Neck, N.J., was an eight-sport athlete at Marlboro High School, where she was the first female to run for the MHS cross country team. She then went to the University of South Carolina and played volleyball for one year. Since the Gamecocks didn’t have women’s track and field or cross country teams until 1988, she competed for the Carolina Track Club until she completed her degree in political science and philosophy. After college, MansurWentworth continued her competitive running career as a member of Team Adidas from 1985-89 and the Reebok Racing Club from 1990-95 as a distance runner. Her coaching resume includes being an assistant coach at the University of South Florida as well as for Brooks Johnson’s Training Group for postcollegiate athletes. She’s also worked with USA Track and Field as the executive director of the Florida division of the organization. Also, MansurWentworth served as the director of administration and co-owner of Steeple Timing and Event Management, a company started up by her husband that helped organize, promote and run 300 events a year including cross country and track meets. GORUNNERS.COM 2014 In Review The 2014 season featured a drastic improvement by the Roadrunner cross country team. One of the biggest evidences of that progress was the 2014 edition of the Western Athletic Conference Championships. In 2013, CSU Bakersfield put together an average finish of 21:35.70 as a team. The second time around at the WAC Championships, the ‘Runners finished with an average time of 20:09.20. The 2013 squad had no individual place in the Top 40 while three CSUB women accomplished that feat in 2014. LaShya Morgan has been a standout leader in each of her first two seasons at CSUB. Now headed into her junior campaign, the Bakersfield native looks to continue her streak of consecutive meets leading the ‘Runners. After pacing CSUB again at the 2014 WAC Championships, Morgan has now finished first for Bakersfield in all 11 of her collegiate meets. Morgan, a graduate of Ridgeview High School in Bakersfield, set personal records in both the 5k and 6k races this season. The junior’s time of 23:41.8 at the Pomona-Pitzer invitational 6k boosted Morgan into the CSUB Top 10 Division I times list. One month after making herself the seventh-fastest ‘Runner in 6k races, Morgan peaked in the WAC Championships 5k with another PR of 19:22.0. She is now just four seconds outside of the CSUB Top 10 for the 5k race. The ‘Runners got a pleasant surprise in another underclassman, Angel Valdez. In her freshman season, Valdez finished either second or third for CSUB in each meet while being one of only three ‘Runners to crack the 20-minute barrier in a 5k race. The sophomore will play an important role as Bakersfield’s No. 2 runner in 2015. Ariana Mariscal enjoyed an impressive sophomore campaign despite the crossover from being a mid-distance runner on the track and field team. A two-time All-WAC performer in the 800m, Mariscal managed the tricky path from converting her success in track to success in cross country. The junior set her personal best at the Mustang Challenge 5k in September with a time of 19:51.1. The time helped her to finish second for CSUB at the meet, her top finish of the season. 2015 Preview With the loss of redshirt senior Megan Thompson to graduation, the Roadrunners will look to a new group of upperclassmen to lead the way on the courses during the 2015 season. LaShya Morgan, Ariana Mariscal, and Tori Blackmon all return to the team for their third season with the ‘Runners while senior Kaylee Moyer will conclude her career in 2015. These four veterans will pave the way for a CSUB team which is ripe with potential. Also returning for Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Marcia Mansur-Wentworth is sophomore Angel Valdez. The Bakersfield native and East High School alumna will be a youthful sparkplug for the ‘Runners after a standout freshman campaign. Morgan, a graduate of West High School in Bakersfield, will look to continue her streak of pacing the Roadrunners. The junior has finished first for CSUB in all 11 of her collegiate races and the combination of Morgan and Valdez is expected to pack a powerful punch. “LaShya returns as our top runner the past two years and has led every workout during the preseason,” MansurWentworth said. “She is a strong and consistent performer. Angel was never out of the top four last year as a freshman. She also had the fastest 3000-meter of the entire team last spring in track season. Excellent racer!” CSUB’s head coach also looks to Mariscal, who is still learning to translate success on the track to success on the course, to continue to show her great range. Marina Emhoff, a fellow mid-distance runner from the CSUB track and field team, will take her first shot at cross country since high school, according to Mansur-Wentworth: “Marina is showing great strength in training so far. She had breakthrough performances last year in track to earn All-Conference in the 400-meter. I expect her to be a valuable asset to both teams this year.” The Roadrunners welcome four more newcomers to the squad: sophomores Victoria Larios, Edith Duran, and Erika Nathaly Gutierrez. The latter two join the cross country team from track and field, like Emhoff, and each will add depth for the ‘Runners. The Roadrunners open their season Tues., Sept. 1 at the Pepperdine Invitational in Malibu, Calif. CSUB traditionally opens its season at the Mark Covert Classic put on by Cal State Fullerton, but Mansur-Wentworth decided to shake things up: “We are opening with a smaller, but still very competitive meet at Pepperdine this season. In the past, our team has not competed well at the Fullerton meet. I decided to make a change and try something different this year.” From Malibu, the ‘Runners will head to Fresno Sept. 11 for the Bulldog Invitational. The following weekend, CSUB will tackle the Mustang Challenge but on by Master’s College Sept. 19. The ‘Runners will tackle two meets in October to prepare for the WAC Championships. The 2015 WAC Cross Country Championships is slated for Halloween morning and will be hosted by Utah Valley in Orem, Utah. The ‘Runners will send its top squad to battle it out with the rest of the WAC. 11CSU BAKERSFIELD CROSS COUNTRY GORUNNERS.COM 2014 CSU Bakersfield Cross Country Results Time CSUB Overall Finish Finish Date Meet Tori Blackmon (5k PR - 20:25.3 - 10/19/13) 21:51.8 5th 84th 8/30/14 Mark Covert 5k 17:05.8 6th 42nd 9/5/14 Fresno State 4.2k 21:11.2 6th 90th 9/20/14 Mustang Challenge 5k 26:04.4 5th 118th 10/4/14 Pomona-Pitzer 6k 21:18.8 5th 12th 10/18/14 Cal Poly 5k 21:56.0 6th 56th 11/1/14 WAC 5k Jorey Braughton (5k PR - 20:02.2 - 10/13/12) 17:45.5 8th 52nd 9/5/14 Fresno State 4.2k Ariana Mariscal (5k PR - 19:51.1 - 9/20/14) 21:11.9 4th 77th 8/30/14 Mark Covert 5k 16:45.3 4th 37th 9/5/14 Fresno State 4.2k 19:51.1 2nd 62nd 9/20/14 Mustang Challenge 5k 26:28.0 6th 127th 10/4/14 Pomona-Pitzer 6k 21:15.8 4th 11th 10/18/14 Cal Poly 5k 20:05.0 3rd 41st 11/1/14 WAC 5k LaShya Morgan (5k PR - 19:22 - 11/1/14) 19:54.2 1st 40th 8/30/14 Mark Covert 5k 16:02.8 1st 27th 9/5/14 Fresno State 4.2k 19:24.3 1st 39th 9/20/14 Mustang Challenge 5k 23:41.8 1st 39th 10/4/14 Pomona-Pitzer 6k 19:47.4 1st 5th 10/18/14 Cal Poly 5k 19:22.0 1st 30th 11/1/14 WAC 5k Kaylee Moyer (5k PR - 21:31.0 - 10/19/13) 22:43.6 7th 89th 8/30/14 Mark Covert 5k 17:42.0 7th 51st 9/5/14 Fresno State 4.2k 28:34.7 7th 161st 10/4/14 Pomona-Pitzer 6k 22:55.2 7th 15th 10/18/14 Cal Poly 5k Megan Thompson (5k PR - 19:27.2 - 9/24/11) 20:36.0 2nd 64th 8/30/14 Mark Covert 5k 16:28.6 3rd 34th 9/5/14 Fresno State 4.2k 20:43.5 4th 81st 9/20/14 Mustang Challenge 5k 25:31.0 4th 103rd 10/4/14 Pomona-Pitzer 6k 20:43.1 3rd 10th 10/18/14 Cal Poly 5k 20:28.0 4th 47th 11/1/14 WAC 5k Angel Valdez (5k PR - 19:56.5 - 9/20/14) 21:10.2 3rd 75th 8/30/14 Mark Covert 5k 16:22.2 2nd 32nd 9/5/14 Fresno State 4.2k 19:56.5 3rd 64th 9/20/14 Mustang Challenge 5k 24:07.9 2nd 56th 10/4/14 Pomona-Pitzer 6k 20:16.4 2nd 7th 10/18/14 Cal Poly 5k 19:58.0 2nd 38th 11/1/14 WAC 5k 2014 CSU Bakersfield Cross Country Results August 30 at Mark Covert Classic 5k Avg. Siegfried had been placed in the interim athletics director role in July of the previous year and led the department to the best year in its Division I history through a commitment to excellence. This commitment has created successes in the areas of academics, competition, and student-athlete well-being. Academic achievement has soared under Siegfried’s leadership. In 2014, CSUB student-athletes reached their highest ever cumulative GPA of 2.97 compared to 2.87 the year prior. Additionally, in the winter quarter, a record term GPA of 3.02 was achieved with 164 student-athletes achieving a 3.0 GPA or above compared to 112 student-athletes the winter before. In the fall, Siegfried created a new position and hired the first ever full-time life skills coordinator and established the Runner Ready program. The purpose of this new program is is to prepare student-athletes for success in life during and after college athletics.
