President’s Message
Here we are, the second month of the year
already. Of course, with deadlines, editing and all
that goes with putting this newsletter together, I am
still in 2015.
All the Christmas decorations should be down (I
set a goal of mid-February for mine) and we look
forward to the season of mini conventions. The
Central Florida Fun Fest is over, and The Great Get
Together is just days away in Southern California.
March brings us Tex Fest in the Dallas area and
our largest mini convention is always Springtime in
Atlanta which will be at the end of March. All of
these events provide opportunities to connect with
other collectors, and perhaps find that Coca-Cola
item that has eluded you.
In the past we had talked about having a national
convention in Atlanta. Unfortunately, none of
the hotels in the area were willing to provide the
necessary complimentary rooms and meeting space
the board requires during the selection process. We
have turned west and will be visiting a hotel in the
Kansas City area that has been actively pursuing our
event. The board will be meeting at the hotel this
spring to inspect and decide if this is a good fit for
the club.
Some of you have expressed interest in our site
selection and have made suggestions for hotels and
venues you would like to see us investigate. At first
it would seem that there would be an almost endless
number of hotels and places to hold the convention.
Each year we send out requests for proposals to the
major hotel chains and several independent hotels
that have requested to bid on our event. We also
have convention and visitors bureaus who want us
to have the convention in their city.
We list our specifications and many are
eliminated because of cost, meeting space, parking
or other obstacles. By the time we come down to
selection time, we only have a few hotels that meet
our specifications and have the availability during

our time frame.
We have learned from past
experience that overflow hotels are
not desirable. Because of this, we
have to eliminate any hotel that
does not have at least 325 rooms
available for the convention. Please
keep this in mind while investigating hotels. We
are certainly open to looking at any place that
meets our specifications.
One of our members sent a suggestion
regarding offering a discount for multiple year
memberships. This was done at least once in
the past and I think it is something the board
needs to review again. I just reviewed the recent
membership renewals and found that only about 5%
of our members opt for renewing their membership
past one year. Perhaps the discount will encourage
more multiple year renewals and reduce some of
the paperwork involved.

Coca-Cola travels first class

I am writing this on Dec. 21 in the midst of
packing for my move from Northern California
to Southern California. I have just accepted a new
occupation that I am very excited about, however,
the first thing that always comes to mind when I am
beginning move preparations is how well my
Coca-Cola collection will fare during the trip.
I have completed two major moves so far in my
life: Arizona to Idaho and Idaho to NorCal. By now,
I have devised my own system for safe transport of
my beloved collection. So far, this move is requiring
roughly four boxes just to pack the items that will
fit in boxes; the rest will be carefully wrapped in
blankets with pillows shoved all around them.
My Coke collection is the very first thing I pack
out of everything I own because it gives me the
most anxiety. If one of my collectibles is packed
incorrectly, a bottle cap could come loose and
destroy everything in its box. Thus, my bottles and
cans are packed in their own boxes, while the tins,
glassware, trinkets and cars reside together in others.
Working at newspapers has also benefited me for
these moves. I have been able to acquired newspaper
press end roll
paper to wrap all
my Coke ware
in. It’s much
cleaner to use
than regular
newspaper, since
the end rolls
don’t have the
nasty black ink
on it yet.
My next
requirement
is that my
collection always
rides in my car
with my kitty
Tesla and me as we drive to our new home. My fish
Pemberton will also accompany us in the car this
year. No box containing Coca-Cola memorabilia
is permitted within the vicinity of a moving truck
where larger items could fall and crush them. It is
just something I do not allow.

Once I arrive in SoCal, I will set up my curio
cabinets and unload my Coke boxes from my car
first thing. I just cross my fingers the entire time
I open each box with the hope that I successfully
avoided disaster.
My process hasn’t failed me so far, it’s just
a pain to pack and unpack everything. But it’s
definitely worth it in the end when my display is
complete. Wish me luck!

Club Collects More Than Just Coke Memorabilia

Seaford, DE – Memorabilia is not the only thing being collected by the MD-DC-VA Chapter of
the Coca-Cola Collector’s Club; several of its members recently collected multiple bags of brand
new toys which they donated to Toys for Tots. While attending the club’s annual Christmas
Party, Treasurer, Wayne Obermire, and his wife Lois, along with their grandson Corporal Tyler
Elzey of the Woodbridge Marine Corps Junior ROTC, volunteered to deliver the toys to Sussex
County Federal Credit Union in Seaford, which functions as a Toys for Tots drop-off location.
Also on hand for the donation was Harold C. Dew who served with the First & Second Marine
Corp Air Wing.
Sussex County FCU’s CEO, Pamela Fleuette, was extremely moved by the club’s gesture and
explained, “We are so appreciative of the generosity displayed by this chapter of the Coca-Cola
Collector’s Club and to all of our credit union members, like Wayne and Lois, who never seem
to forget that the true spirit of Christmas is in the giving. It was especially kind of Corporal Elzey
to accompany his grandparents and to proudly represent the Woodbridge Marine Corps Junior
ROTC. This level of caring and generosity can only be rewarded by the smiles that will appear
on many children’s faces this Christmas when they see a special gift under their tree. I thank
everyone who contributed!”

registrations received after this will be on-site. No
refunds will be issued after this date.

REGISTRATION
Adult Registration – The registration packets will contain
the convention bottle. Packets are limited to 450. Adult
registrations exceeding the limit will be converted to a
“No Packet” registration. If a credit card is declined or not
legible, the member will not be registered until the
problem is resolved.
No Packet Registration – The “No Packet” adult
registration is for members who would like to attend
the convention but do not want the gifts.
Child Registration – Child registration packets are for
children twelve and under. Children under the age of
three do not need to register, and will not receive a
packet.
Registration Changes and Cancellations – All changes to
your registration or any cancellation requests must be in
writing by letter, fax, or email to Hilda King. Any convention
merchandise NOT claimed by the end of the convention will
revert to Club property. There will be no refunds after June
1, 2016.
THE CONVENTION HOTEL
To reserve your room you will need to contact the Hyatt
Regency Reston Hotel. The Hotels address is 1800
Presidents Street, Reston, VA. 20190. Reservations can
be made by calling 888-421-1442 and reference The
Coca-Cola Collectors Club. The convention rate is $99
plus tax for 1-4 people, which includes parking.

SELLING ROOMS
There will be five selling rooms available this year. They
are three large rooms with 475 sq. ft. that will rent for
$350 and are Hunters Woods, Tall Oaks and North
Point. Two small rooms with 364 sq. ft. are available for
$300 and are South Lakes and Town Center. Each room
will come furnished with four tables.
To reserve one of these rooms, you must already be
registered for the convention and send a fax to Hilda at
407-358-8362 on Monday, Feb. 1, 2016 at 1:00 p.m.
Eastern Standard Time.
Those requesting a selling room will be given a choice
of the available rooms in the order the requests are
received. Additional tables may be reserved for $25
each. Upon receipt of notification that you have been
awarded the room, payment must be made by credit
card within 24 hours by faxing it to 407-358-8362 along
with the selling room agreement form. If payment is not
made within this time frame, the room will be offered
to the next person requesting a room.
THE CLUB STORE
The Club Store will be stocked with items on every
Coca-Cola Collectors wish list. On Monday, there will be a
drawing for members who make a purchase in the store.
On Tuesday, the store will have another drawing for
members that make purchases. New and old items as well
as limited edition items will be offered for sale. Be sure to
return on Friday for the Final Closeout Sale on all
merchandise. Remember, no packet or event items will be
sold in the store. They are only available by purchasing the
full packet registration or through attending the events.
CHAPTER HOSPITALITY ROOM
If your chapter would like to hold a meeting or get
together, a room will be available from Wednesday to
Friday for two hour time slots on a first come first served
basis. Please contact Hilda King to reserve this space.

The Lincoln Memorial
The Lincoln Memorial is an American national
monument to honor the 16th President of the
United States, since the 1930s has been a symbolic
center focused on race relations. It has been the site
of countless major historic and cultural moments
— from Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have a Dream”
speech to the popular movie “Forrest Gump.” It
contains inscriptions of two well-known speeches
by Lincoln, The Gettysburg Address and his
Second Inaugural Address.
Vietnam Veterans Memorial
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a 2-acre
national memorial in Washington, DC. It honors
U.S. service members of the U.S. armed forces who
fought in the Vietnam War, service members who

died in service in Vietnam/South East Asia, and
those service members who were unaccounted for
(Missing In Action) during the War.
Its construction and related issues have been the
source of controversies, some of which have
resulted in additions to the memorial complex.
The memorial currently consists of three separate

Women's Memorial, and the Vietnam Veterans
Memorial Wall, which is the best-known part of the
memorial.
Korean War Memorial
The Korean War Memorial was dedicated on
July 27, 1995. The main memorial is a form of
a triangle intersecting a circle. The walls exhibit
more than 2,500 images of soldiers, equipment,
and people which represent the land, sea, and air
troops who supported those who fought in the war.
When reflected on the wall, there appears to be
38 soldiers, 38 months, and it also represents the
38th parallel the separates North and South Korea.
There are 19 stainless steel statues within the
walled triangle which represent a squad on patrol.
They represent all 4 branches of the armed forcesU.S. Army, Marine Corps, Air Force and Navy.
There is a United Nations wall which lists the 22
nations that contributed troops, or medical support.
One further wall bears the message, “Freedom Is Not Free.”
Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial
The national memorial dedicated to Franklin
Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd president of the United
States, lies about half way between the Lincoln
Memorial and the Thomas Jefferson Memorial
in Washington, DC. Its four open-air rooms
represent each of the four terms of office to which
he was elected. A meandering pathway leads past
waterfalls, bronze sculptures, and FDR’s own
powerful words carved on the granite walls. The
memorial honors the memory of one of America’s
great leaders and the optimism and courage that he
shared with his fellow citizens through the ordeals

of the Great Depression and World War II. A statue
of Roosevelt sitting in a wheelchair greets visitors
and reminds them of the man who refused to let
disability stop him.
The White House and surrounding area
This tour will not allow you inside the White
House but will give you a view of the outside and
surrounding buildings.
Next door to the White House is the Eisenhower
Executive Office Building. This now houses many
offices for the current White House staff such
as Secretary of State, Secretaries of the Navy,
Secretaries of War, Office of the Vice President,
even some Presidents have held offices in this
building at times.
To the east of the White House is the U.S. Treasury
building. It is the third oldest federal building in
Washington, D.C. behind the Capitol and the White
House.

The Thomas Jefferson Building
The Library of Congress was established by
an act of Congress in 1800 when President John
Adams signed a bill providing for the transfer of
the seat of government from Philadelphia to the
new capital city of Washington. The legislation
described a reference library for Congress only,
containing “such books as may be necessary for
the use of Congress—and for putting up a suitable
apartment for containing them therein…”
Established with $5,000 appropriated by the
legislation, it was housed in the new Capitol until
August 1814, when invading British troops set fire
to the Capitol Building, burning and pillaging the
contents of the small library.
Within a month, retired President Thomas
Jefferson offered his personal library as a
replacement. Jefferson had spent 50 years
accumulating books, “putting by everything which
related to America, and indeed whatever was rare
and valuable in every science”; his library was
considered to be one of the finest in the United
States.

The Alamo Chapter in San Antonio, TX was founded in 1991. They
meet on the third Wed. of every month at 7 pm, unless there is a
holiday or special event that month. You are welcome to join them
at Denny’s on 1H-10W just south of Wurzbach Rd. There are
usually 18-25 members at each meeting.
The members are a diverse group of collectors who collect old and new Coca-Cola
items. It is like the city, made up of different individuals who collect and decorate in
different ways. This makes a great chapter.
Before and after the meeting there is time for selling or trading. Many times every
attendee takes home a prize. There is one large prize at the end of the evening. Dinner
and Cokes can be purchased with members bringing dessert.
In October they celebrate their anniversary with a party. They go to a restaurant and the
celebration starts at Noon. There is food, fun, and everyone brings two Bingo prizes for
rousing games of Bingo.
The Christmas Party is in Dec. at a member’s house where their collection is on display.
There is a pot luck and gift exchange. It is so much fun when the numbers are drawn
and a member gets to pick a gift.

Export Bottle

Think back to the beginning years of Coca-Cola.
Coca-Cola is becoming more popular in the U.S.
How should they introduce the drink phenomenon
to the world? The new packaging of Coke in a root
bottle takes the country by storm. To introduce
Coca-Cola to the markets outside the U.S., they
developed an “export bottle.” This is the first bottle
created to be sold outside the U.S.
The export bottles were green bottles with
elegant labels and gold foil wrapped tops to look
like champagne bottles which were served on
luxury ocean liners crossing
the Atlantic Ocean. These
were bottles used from 1926
to 1934. Because they were
used for a very short time only
on the ships, very few of them
survived and thus they are
highly collectible. There have
been reproductions so be careful
if you find one. The original
bottle will likely have damage
to the foil or the label. There
is an original at the World of
Coke in Atlanta, GA. so be sure
to look it up next time you visit
WOC. Springtime in Atlanta is
just around the corner!

bottle.
Countries where bottling began in the 1920’s
include Colombia, Belgium, Bermuda, Haiti, Italy,
Germany, Spain, Mexico and
the Netherlands.
In my research, I found
there was a Spanish label
bottle along with the English
version. The label with the
text in English was designed
for European and Far Eastern
ports; the label with the text
in Spanish was designed
primarily for Latin-American
ports.
