Wellfleet Bay
Natural History Day Camp
Our camp is designed to promote a child’s lasting curiosity and excitement about nature. Our goal is to instill
awareness and appreciation of the natural world, to teach responsibility for the environment, and to promote an
understanding of our place in nature. Camp activities are carefully planned to meet these goals and, at the same
time, create a fun and memorable experience.
about MASS AUDUBON
Mass Audubon works to protect the nature of Massachusetts for people and wildlife.
Together with more than 100,000 members, we care for 35,000 acres of conservation
land; provide school, camp, and other educational programs for 225,000 children
and adults annually; and advocate for sound environmental policies at local, state,
and federal levels. Each year, our statewide network of wildlife sanctuaries welcomes
nearly half a million visitors of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds and serves as the
base for our work. To support these important efforts, call 800-AUDUBON (800-2838266) or visit massaudubon.org.
about WELLFLEET BAY
Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary serves more than 1,100 children through day
camp each year and welcomes more than 32,000 visitors annually. We protect
and conduct research on a number of Cape Cod’s endangered, threatened, or
at-risk species. Our robust science program allows us to bring actual research
into all of our education programs, including day camp. To support Wellfleet
Bay’s conservation and education work, call 508-349-2615, extension 109,
or visit massaudubon.org/wellfleetbay, click the Donate button, and select
“Wellfleet Bay.”
about CAMP
Camp Staff
Additional Camp Information
Our staff are chosen for their enthusiasm, experience, knowledge,
and ability to work with children in the outdoors. They are college
graduates or undergraduates currently enrolled in an environmental and/or educational field of study. Staff members participate in a
week long pre-camp training and are certified in First Aid and CPR.
Pick up Window: If your child’s camp ends at 12:30 pm,
you may pick him/her up anytime from 12:15 to 12:45 pm.
If your child’s camp ends at 2:30 pm, you may pick him/her
up anytime from 2:15 to 2:45 pm. This will help to alleviate
congestion in the parking lot.
Our Expectations of Campers
Family Hikes: Check out some of the cool places that
your camper has been talking about, from the coyote den
to the “painted turtle bridge.” Wednesday mornings from
8 to 8:45 am. Preregistration is not required and the hike is
open to all family members.
Due to the outdoor and exploratory nature of our camp program,
campers must be able to move about on uneven terrain. Campers
are expected to meaningfully participate in age-appropriate
activities, including nature study. All campers must follow stated
behavior expectations and safety rules. The camp director reserves
the right to dismiss a camper when, in his/her judgement, the
camper’s behavior interferes with the rights of others or the smooth
functioning of the group or activity, or violates the camp’s behavior
policy. In such cases no refunds will be provided. If you have any
questions regarding your child’s ability to participate in our camp
program, please contact the Camp Director.

6/20–6/24 Exploring Wellfleet Bay (see page 3)
6/27–7/1 Endangered Species
Includes a Nauset Marsh cruise. Cape Cod is home to a number
of threatened and endangered species: piping plovers, ospreys,
diamondback terrapins, and humpback whales are a few
that are making a comeback. Learn how you can help these
creatures survive.
7/4–7/8 Coastal Encounters
Includes a trip to the dunes and an ocean-side beach. Cape
Cod is the perfect place to encounter coastal life. Observe
shorebirds on barrier beaches, dig for clams and worms on tidal
flats, muck for about for crabs and eels in salt marshes, and
follow coyote tracks in dunes!
8/8–8/12 Nature of Cape Cod
Includes a hike along Cape Cod’s Outer Beach. What makes
Cape Cod unique? Is it the fact that it’s the meeting point
of southern and northern currents, or is it its glacial origin?
Investigate the Cape’s unique habitats, from kettle ponds to
sand dunes to clay cliffs.
8/15–8/19 Wildlife Watchers
Includes a trip to the Beech Forest. Become a true wildlife
watcher by developing your observation skills. Spend extra
time watching birds in the forest or observing fiddler crabs
interacting with each other. Travel across the sanctuary
investigating animal behaviors and identifying their special
characteristics.
7/11–7/15 Spineless Wonders
Includes a trip to a rocky beach and tide pools. Over 80% of
the animal world is made up of animals without backbones—
such as insects, worms, slugs, jellyfish, squid, clams, and crabs!
Uncover crabs and sea anemones, dissect a squid, dig for clams
and worms, and hunt (with nets) for dragonflies and butterflies.
8/22–8/26 Marine Life Mania
Includes a trip to Chatham’s piers to observe birds,
invertebrates, and possibly seals. From salt marshes to
harbors, discover the connections between the biomes of the
marine environment. Survey the invertebrates of the tidal flats
by seining, dipping, and digging. Check out fish, crabs, seals,
and other animals during our trip to Chatham.
7/18–7/22 Ocean Odyssey
Includes a marine life cruise aboard the Albatross. Explore
Cape Cod’s marine communities, including the ocean, bay,
marsh, and beach. Discover invertebrates such as shrimp, crabs,
and clams by seining, dipping, and digging. Learn about marine
species including whales, seals, and lobsters. We may also
discover spider crabs, sea stars, and skates on our cruise.
8/29–9/2 The Hunters and the Hunted
Includes a trip to the Provincetown breakwater. Marine
animals have a range of ways they hunt and consume food.
Imagine an animal with a beak inside its mouth or one that
can regurgitate its own insides! It’s not science fiction; it’s life
on Cape Cod. Whether it’s sharks in the bay or fish in the pond,
discover how animals hunt or keep from being hunted.
7/25–7/29 Wildlife Tracks and Traces
Includes a dune hike in Provincetown or Truro. In the heat of
summer, some of the Cape’s wildlife bury underground, while
other native animals are nocturnal. We’ll look for animal tracks
and traces, such as mammal tracks, birds’ nests, clam holes, and
turtle signs.
8/1–8/5 Cape Cod Cold-Bloods
Includes a trip to Gull and Higgins Pond sluiceway. What do
fish, turtles, and snakes have in common? They are all coldblooded! This week seine for fish, hunt for turtles, and search for
frogs and salamanders.
6 There’s more to explore at Wildwood, Mass Audubon’s overnight
camp in Rindge, New Hampshire. Campers ages 9–17 enjoy
hands-on, nature-focused, outdoor activities with well-trained staff
in a beautiful natural setting. Choose from one-week and twoweek overnight sessions, Teen Treks, Leaders-in-Training Sessions,
and Family Camp. Call 866-627-2267 (toll-free) or visit
massaudubon.org/wildwood to learn more.

and animals threaten our native wildlife. Learn to recognize the
“most wanted” aquatic invaders, from crabs to seaweeds, as we
snorkel ponds, creeks, and bays to document unwanted pests
above and below the water. Search for native fish and plants
and develop ideas to slow the alien invaders.
7/18–7/22 Carnivores of the Cape
Includes a seal cruise and a whale watch. Eat or be eaten is the
rule in the world of wildlife. Observe the ways animals attract,
capture, and eat their prey—from snails that spit acid, to sharks
that rule the seas. See what scientists learn from examining the
stomach contents of sharks and seals.
7/25–7/29 Fishing for Compliments
Includes a marine life cruise aboard the Albatross.
Learn about various fishing techniques and how they have
changed throughout the years. Experiment with seine netting
and take a look at fishing from the perspective of fishermen
and the fish. Discover what is being done to make fishing more
sustainable.
8/1–8/5 In the Field
Includes a kayak and a snorkeling trip. Have you ever
wondered what biologists do in the field? Come participate
in sanctuary projects that involve diamondback terrapins,
horseshoe crabs, shorebirds, and more. Try out different field
study techniques such as population censusing and
transect studies.
8/8–8/12 World of Water

From salt, to brackish, to fresh, investigate the inhabitants and
importance of water. Go “ponding” to collect information on
the health of Wellfleet’s Silver Spring Pond. Kayak and explore
a saltmarsh and its aquatic inhabitants and beachcomb for
intertidal creatures.
8/15–8/19 Animal Behavior!
Includes a whale watch and a snorkeling trip. Take some time
to observe behaviors of different animals in the wild. Do fiddler
crabs always go back into the same hole? How far do box
turtles travel to get food? Set up some simple experiments to
find out the answers to these and other questions!
8/22–8/26 Herp Search
Includes a paddleboarding trip and a trip to a swamp.
Turtles, snakes, frogs, and salamanders are everywhere,
especially at Wellfleet Bay! Track box turtles, search for
threatened diamondback terrapins, monitor elusive woodland
salamanders, and keep a lookout for black racers or hognose
snakes.
8/29–9/2 Magnificent Migrators
Includes a kayak trip and a dune hike. The end of summer
marks the middle of the shorebird fall migration season and
the beginning of the whale and butterfly migrations. Some
species go as far as South America! How do they know when
to leave and where to go? Visit Nauset Marsh to discover what
these animals endure to survive.
Please note: participants must be able to demonstrate strong
swimming skills in order to snorkel. Please call the camp director
with any questions or concerns.
